 On August 10, a strong earthquake devastated a large region of Colombia. Amongst the most affected cities was Cali, my hometown.
</div>

 Most of my family members live in Cali, and though we are so grateful that none of them were injured, three families on my mother's side (The Cuartas Family) lost their homes:

 My Aunt Olga and cousin Ana Maria had to leave their apartment after their building was deemed uninhabitable. They moved into the first floor of a house that is owned by all the Cuartas siblings, where my Aunt Alexandra and my cousin Juan Manuel (and his family) lived in two apartments that were on the second floor of that house.

 However, the roof completely collapsed, leaving the two upper apartments uninhabitable and exposed to the elements. Additionally, as the days have passed and the rain and aftershocks have continued, the damage has since spread into the first floor. Walls are showing stress cracks; there is rubble, and the living conditions are far from safe. They have nowhere else to go, so all six of them are currently sharing the first floor of the house, despite its current conditions, but this is neither safe nor sustainable long-term.

 This has been devastating and stressful for our family, and the other siblings, spread out around the world, have been coming together to send money and help as much as they can. However, the damage far exceeds what we’ve been able to cover, and that is why I am creating this campaign.

 The damage is substantial and has only gotten worse The rain has not stopped, and aftershocks from the earthquake are still being felt. Repairing the house will require: -a technical and structural evaluation
</div>

 -safe removal of debris and rubble

 -construction materials
</div>

 -a full rebuild of the collapsed ceiling, with professional, specialized labor to make the house safe again
</div>

 The quote we've received for these repairs in Colombia amounts to more than $40,000 USD. Our hope is that anything we raise will go toward these repair costs, as well as any additional basic needs for all three affected families.

 The funds will be collected by my Aunt Adriana in Texas and transferred directly to one of the Cuartas siblings’ bank accounts in Colombia and dispersed amongst repair costs and the three affected families..

 Repairing this house will not give our family members back their own homes filled with all their personal belongings and memories. But a safe, dry, sturdy roof over their heads would be a major blessing to them. Their lives have been forever changed, and though it will not be comfortable or easy for them to all live in one house, after having their own individual homes, we are all grateful that there is at least a home left to fix, when so many have lost so much more.

It has been tremendously difficult to be so far away and to feel so helpless and powerless throughout this. In the midst of all the chaos, we have seen people from all over the world turn their hearts towards Colombia, and this has meant so much to us.

Repair the Cuartas Home After Colombia's Earthquake

<div>My name is Liliana (Lily) Ramirez, and I am reaching out with a broken heart to ask for your help supporting my brother's family. My sweet 2-year-old nephew, Antonio, was recently diagnosed with Leukemia. Antonio is the son of my only brother, Julián Fernando Ramos, and his wife, Alexandra Valencia. They also have an 8-year-old son, Emilio, who is very worried about his little brother. Aside from my youngest daughter - Andrea, my husband - Luis, and myself, they have no other family here to lean on during this difficult time. I hope that each of you will help me give them the support they deserve.

Although there is little comfort I can provide emotionally, I’m hoping that this fundraiser can help lighten at least a part of the overwhelming financial strain. Antonio will need a minimum of 2.5 years of chemotherapy treatments, as well as his mom's full-time care -- drastically reducing their income.

<div>Although they are experiencing daunting changes in their lives, this money will not only help get Antonio the treatments he needs, but help keep their family living in the same apartment, allow Emilio to attend the same school, and, overall, maintain some stability during these difficult times.

<div>My mom, Thaissa dos Santos, is the light of our family: a single mother who somehow juggled five kids, multiple jobs, and a million whispered prayers without a hint of self-pity. She’s the woman who stayed up all night helping us finish our projects that we forgot to mention the day before they were due, who worked until 3am just to rush us all to school for 6am, just for her to clock back in again at 8am. She is the one who taught me that I can do anything in this world. She’s always believed in miracles. Now she needs one.

<div>On February 8th, 2025, doctors found an aggressive Stage 4 breast cancer that has already spread to her lymph nodes, bones, and brain. Local hospitals, including Moffitt here in Florida, have done all they can, but the disease keeps pushing forward. We are desperately seeking other options and are looking first to Texas. MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston (the place where experimental trials and cutting-edge precision medicine happen every day) has accepted her as a potential patient. The very first evaluation, the key that unlocks those life-saving options, costs more than our entire annual income, and that’s only the beginning. They need the money upfront for treatment, and it is money that we do not have. We cannot continue to put this on hold. The longer we wait, the fewer options my mom has.

<div>The world is brighter with her in it, and her five children still need her light. We’re asking for help covering the avalanche of medical costs so my Mom can have the opportunity to live a longer life. Every dollar is oxygen: moments of rest between chemo sessions, a seat on the plane to Houston, another day my baby brother gets to fall asleep listening to Mom tell a bedtime story. I need my mom in my life. I need her light in my life.

<p>My name is Scott and I want to tell you about my wife Laura. She is a true superhero and survivor who has been through more than I can possibly put into words. Most of her adult life, she has been fighting with asthma.  Back in 2013, she was diagnosed with cancer (Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma) which was devastating to her both mentally and physically. She cried many times that she just wants to “see my grandkids grow up”, so she fought. After six months of chemotherapy, she was clear of all tumors…SHE BEAT CANCER!!!!!

<p>But, because of the high doses of chemo, she now has glaucoma, which is affecting her eyesight. She has gone through five eye surgeries to reduce the pressure in her eyes and still has to go for one more surgery. A couple of years after chemo, she complained of pain in her hips, so she went to the doctor. It turned out that the chemo deteriorated her right hip to the point that she had to have a full hip replacement. I have never seen someone in such pain as she was after the surgery, my heart was broken. But again, Laura fought, and after months of rehabilitation, she was able to walk without so much pain. She concurred a hip replacement…

<p>Then, we were all faced with the COVID virus. She was very careful because of her compromised immune system. As soon as she could, she received both vaccine shots. But COVID was too strong. On Mother’s Day, 2021, she went to the hospital because she was having trouble breathing, thinking it was the asthma. Unfortunately it wasn’t, she had the COVID virus, which turned into pneumonia. She was on such high amounts of oxygen, they moved her into the ICU a couple weeks after arriving at the hospital. The doctor said that the virus had done so much damage to her lungs, he referred to them as”Swiss cheese”. They had pretty much written her off, just trying to make her comfortable, when I asked if she would be a candidate for a lung transplant? The doctor said that she wouldn’t last long enough for that. I didn’t agree with him, so I started pushing the hospital to get her on the transplant  list. After a few weeks, we got a call from Northwestern Memorial Hospital! They said that they reviewed her case and they were going to put a team together to see what they can do for her. After a long interview with myself and Laura, we got the call!! She was accepted for a lung transplant!!! And was transferred to Northwestern Hospital. Laura was both happy and very scared, a double lung transplant..

<p>on August 1, 2021, a set of lungs became available and they took her down for the surgery. 





</p>





<p>Today, she is recovering, the surgery was a success, LAURA SURVIVED A DOUBLE- LUNG TRANSPLANT!!!!!


</p>





<p><span> After being in residential rehab for six weeks, Laura is now home, gone since Mother’s Day. She still has a long way to go with physical therapy, but she is determined to get her body back to the way it was before all of this. This is when we really need your help,</span><span> I will have to take two months off of work because she will need 24/7 care. Laura will also need special equipment at home until she fully recovers. And then there is the medication, some of which is lifelong.</span>

<p>Laura, our superhero, beat cancer and COVID and she deserves to live a somewhat “normal” life for the first time in a long time. We are asking for your help to cover some of the costs so far and future costs.
