<div>I am so blessed to be surrounded by an incredible circle of friends. Since my recent breast cancer diagnosis, I have felt a village gather around me with such care, love, and support. It has been profoundly beautiful.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Some of these dear friends suggested setting up a fundraiser and encouraged me to share a little of my story with the wider family and community. This sits at an uncomfortable edge for me - speaking about something so raw and personal, and asking for help. And at the same time, I deeply trust the strength and medicine that comes from community.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>If you’ve ever danced with me, you’ll know how much I love the song Together We Are Better. I truly believe that our togetherness - in vulnerability, strength, and shared humanity - is powerful medicine.
</div>

</div>
<div>Some time ago, I had a check-up, and no further investigation was recommended. During a moment of deep surrender while holding a dance space this Autumn though, I felt a clear message to go back to the doctor. What followed were weeks of biopsies, scans, and meetings. For one week, there was a very real possibility that the cancer had spread, and I sat waiting for the results in a quiet, intimate relationship with death - meeting just how precious each moment of life truly is. And in the dance, I felt my life force and a strong, clear call: I want to live.

<div>I am deeply grateful to share that it had not spread. Leaving the hospital that day, my sisters and I found ourselves dancing in an empty corridor - celebrating life in the simplest, most honest way we could.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>If you were with us at the recent Winter Gathering, you may now understand more fully the moment in the dance where we acknowledged death and then rose into the full expression of our aliveness together. That was a powerful moment.
</div>

</div>
<div>Now, I am standing at the beginning of what feels like the biggest ceremony of my life so far. There are many unknowns and important decisions ahead. I am gathering a supportive team, working alongside a wonderful NHS team, and exploring integrative approaches to healing as I listen carefully for the path that is right for me.
</div>

<div>Many of you have asked how you can help. If you feel called to hold me in your prayers, that means more than I can say. And if you have the capacity to contribute financially, I receive that with deep gratitude. I’m very aware that finances can be tight, and I want to say clearly: prayers, love, and kind thoughts are more than enough and gratefully received.

A Circle of Support for Mira Khanya

<div><strong>School of Traditional Knowledge and Essential Care Clinic for the Yawanawa.</strong>

<div>This campaign is to support the Yawanawa people of the Brazilian Amazon in the creation of <strong>two new centres, </strong>both focused on healing. One is a school to teach and share Yawanawa knowledge of the use of traditional plant medicines. The second is a clinic where Western medicine, in the form of essential first aid can be provided. The balance of these two knowledge systems is at the heart of the EDGE OF LIFE film.

<div>Muka Yawanawa’s hope is to build the <strong>YUKUNAHU NII VIMI</strong> school for the study of medicinal plant knowledge where students will learn, share wisdom and exchange knowledge. These medicines can help with illnesses in today’s world, including mental health issues, which the Yawanawa call NISÛ. The school to be built in Muka's village of Matrinxã will provide a space for Yawanawa young people to continue their education of sacred Yawanawa knowledge so they do not lose their identity and it will also allow visitors from other places an opportunity to respectfully come to learn and carry this knowledge back with them. The <strong>Yukunahu Nii Vimi school</strong> is a seed. “Ní” is the forest, “Vimi” is the seed, so the seed needs to be germinated across all faces of the earth. In this way, we will be responsible for valuing biodiversity, sharing knowledge widely and ensuring that Yawanawa knowledge is passed on from generation to generation.

<div>In addition the Yawanawa are in need of a clinic for essential first aid so that they do not have to leave their forest home in the event of accidents and injury. The <strong>Yawanawa</strong> <strong>Essential Care Clinic</strong> will provide for care that Yawanawa medicines do not cover, for example, the means to treat deep cuts, provide treatment in the case of burns and assist with casts and bandages for injuries such as broken bones. The <strong>Yawanawa Essential Care Clinic</strong> will be built in the village of Mutum, accessible to all the Yawanawa from the surrounding 7 villages. It will mean Yawanawa who suffer such injuries will not have to leave by canoe to travel the long distance to the nearest hospital. They will be able to care for these injuries in their forest home.

<div>The Port Kembla community group Our Community Project ran a fundraising campaign similar to this one on the back of the release of Lynette Wallworth’s previous film, Tender which enabled them to purchase the old Port Kembla fire station. They have now managed 100's of life-affirming funerals through Australia's first Not For Profit funeral Company, Tender Funerals Illawarra. Now the same group are acting in support of this Gofundme campaign following the release of the Edge of Life film. Both communities are now connected through films that reveal their incredible community spirit, a spirit still going strong.

<div>Hi, my name is Nikki, and I’m here to share the story of my amazing friend Lea &amp; help raise funds to help save her life and improve the quality of her life.

<div>Lea isn't thrilled to be in a position to reach out for support, nor would many of us be - but her ongoing quality of life &amp; survival comes with hefty costs and we are therefore asking for your help in <strong>sharing</strong>, <strong>fundraising </strong>or <strong>directly donating </strong>for Lea's cause.

<div><strong>LEA'S BACK STORY</strong>

<div>In 2018, Lea was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer after more than two years of being misdiagnosed. Doctors told her she was too young, with no family history. By the time they gave a diagnosis, the cancer had already spread to her bones and liver.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Lea has been through four different cancer treatments over the last six years, and has been on hormone therapy the entire time. Some treatments were manageable, others brought horrible side effects, and one even saw her in hospital, fighting for her life.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Every treatment has left permanent side effects and changed Lea’s quality of life, but she has always managed her healing holistically, as best she can. I know that her integrative approach is why she is still here, and still doing ‘well.’
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>For the first few years, Lea’s cancer stayed stable, or even shrank.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><strong>THEN IN 2023...</strong>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>In 2023, her primary tumour started growing again, and she bravely chose to have a mastectomy. Later that year, she ended up in hospital again, needing radiotherapy on her pelvis due to progression in her bones and severe hypercalcaemia. She then began a targeted therapy, which came with a new wave of awful side effects. Eventually, she was hospitalised with chronic anaemia, needing blood transfusions and dealing with a week full of complications and infections.
</div>

<div>Lea started chemo as an inpatient and continued for 10 gruelling months.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>By May 2024, she was stable. Her scans were good, so her doctors took her off treatment, and she was monitored with regular scans... until August 2024.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><strong>AUGUST 2024...</strong>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>In August, a routine scan showed new signs of cancer progression in Lea’s liver. Her doctors recommended a clinical trial, but before she could be accepted, she needed further tests.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>That’s when things took a turn for the worse.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>A full-body CT scan picked up cancer in her brain.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Because of where the tumour is located, the most effective treatments—targeted radiotherapies—aren’t an option.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Lea’s only option now is whole-brain radiotherapy, which carries harsh side effects and lifelong complications.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Lea needs funds to seek therapies &amp; treatments quickly, as much as she needs funds to help her rehabilitate from the very same life saving treatments that keep her alive.
</div>

</div>
<div><strong>THERE IS NO TIME TO LOSE</strong>

<div>We need to support Lea, and the time to act is <strong>now</strong>.

<div>For the last six years, Lea has done everything she can to learn, adapt, and manage her illness.

<div>She has pieced together her own healing, accessing what she could, when she could, always making the best of what was available. But now, after six years, it’s clear she needs more help, and more access to the treatments that can really make a difference.

<div>There are tests, therapies, and treatments that could make a huge difference in Lea’s life. New options have emerged, and different approaches that Lea is eager to try. But without the necessary funds, she can’t access them. Her options are shrinking, and the NHS can no longer offer the hope it once did.

<div><strong>HOW YOUR DONATIONS WILL BE USED</strong>

<div>Lea needs access to alternative therapies, advanced testing, and international clinics that have been on her radar for years. Here’s how your support can help:

<li><strong>Private High-Res Brain MRI</strong> (£500 - £1,500) – for a more detailed understanding of her brain tumour

<li><strong>Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy</strong> (HBOT) (£300 to start) – for reducing inflammation and improving healing
</li>
<li><strong>Consultations and Testing </strong>(£300+) – with specialists who can guide her next steps
</li>
<li><strong>Dr. Vogel Radiotherapy </strong>(£3,400) – targeting her brain or liver
</li>
<li><strong>Hydrogen Oxygen Inhalation Machine:</strong> Approx. £2,000 - £4,000. This machine helps with brain metastases and aids in recovery from radiotherapy by reducing oxidative stress and inflammation.

<li><strong>Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS): </strong>This device uses magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells and is shown to be effective for brain metastases and can be bought for home use for around £700.
</li>
<li><strong>Supplements and Integrative Therapies</strong> (£50 - £150 monthly)
</li>
<li>IV Therapies such as..
</li>
<li><strong>IV Mistletoe Therapy:</strong> £100 - £150 per session (Typically requires multiple sessions, often weekly or bi-weekly, depending on the protocol)
</li>
<li><strong>IV Vitamin C Therapy: </strong>£200 - £400 per session (This also usually requires multiple sessions, sometimes 2-3 times per week, depending on the treatment plan)
</li>
<li>There are also more intensive treatments like<strong> Hope for Cancer (Mexico)</strong>, which could cost up to £50,000,
</li>
<li><strong>Advanced chemotherapy options like Enhurtu</strong>, which can run over £10,000 per cycle.

<div>That last option (Enhurtu) is worth a special mention...

<div>Among the treatment options that could greatly benefit Lea, Enhurtu (Trastuzumab Deruxtecan) has shown promising results, particularly for patients with brain metastases. Lea’s doctor has recommended Enhurtu as a potentially effective treatment to support her brain, either before or after radiotherapy.
</div>

<div>The data surrounding this drug shows that it can be effective in targeting cancer that has spread to the brain, offering hope for improving Lea's prognosis.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Unfortunately, accessing Enhurtu is a significant challenge due to its cost, which can reach upwards of £10,000 per cycle. This makes it an out-of-reach option without financial support.
</div>

</div>
