It has been a while since my last update, so I wanted to let you know where things stand and thank everyone who has supported me and my family.
Since August, I have been having EC chemotherapy. I had hoped it would give me more time with the cancer under control, but I can only have a limited number of cycles because I received this treatment when I first had breast cancer, and this drug carries a lifetime limit. We also sought advice from the Royal Marsden about histotripsy. Sadly, it was not suitable for me because of the size and number of tumours in my liver.
I am now trying to access a drug called Enhertu. My cancer is HER2-low, and Enhertu could be an important option for me, if it works, it could add months, or even years to my life.
Enhurtu is available on the NHS in England for some people with HER2-low secondary breast cancer, I do not meet the current criteria for NHS funding because I have already had three different chemotherapy treatments since my cancer spread, and the cut off is two chemo therapies.
My oncology team is pursuing an Individual Funding Request, and we are waiting to hear the outcome. I have also asked about compassionate access, but that request has not yet been submitted while we await the funding decision.
If I cannot access Enhertu through the NHS, I have recently had a new quote of £4,358 every three weeks to receive it privately. That is why this fundraiser matters so much to us. Nothing has been decided yet, and I will update you as soon as I know more.
In the meantime, I have been speaking out about the access rules, including sharing my story with BBC South East and ITV Meridian. I hope it helps people understand what this decision means for patients and families like mine.
I’ve also started sharing my cancer journey and everyday life on TikTok. You can follow me here: @laura_stanford75
Thank you to everyone who has donated, shared the page, organised a fundraiser or sent a kind message. Your support is helping us prepare for whatever comes next, and it means a great deal to me and my family.
Love,
Laura xx
