<div>Long story short, our upstairs neighbor Robert W. Rzentkowski passed away a month ago and we were the only people on his hospital record. When he passed we were asked if we would cover his funeral costs since there was no known next of kin, so this embarked us on a journey of searching through his apartment to find information on possible family members, if he had any funerary services pre-paid for, and trying to understand what to do in this whole dilemma.

<div>Robert was 86, a lifelong Chicagoan, old school Polish, a devout Catholic, a genealogy and history researcher, a typewriter repairman, an active Boy Scouts member, a collector, and probably much more we'll never find out. We got to know most of this after his passing while going through his belongings.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>While trying to navigate the entire funeral/burial process, we found he had a pre-paid family plot at a cemetery and that just left the funeral services to be dealt with. I reached out to a customer at work who is a funeral director; he helped us with the last arrangements and donated the funeral at cost. We are so grateful to Milos at Caring Cremations, who was able to retrieve Robert from the hospital, prepare his body and transport him to the cemetery. We wouldn't had been able to do it without him.

<div>We already paid for it so now we're asking our great community to help us raise the funds so we can make back that money. I trust the people we know and I am completely sure we will be able to raise our goal amount, we can do this!

<div>On January 24th, the Holt-Carson family suffered a sudden tragedy. Our dear friend, Mark Holt, had a massive heart attack on January 15, which damaged his heart irreparably and caused a stroke a few days later. The family then found out he was an organ donor and had to wait three more days to let him go. He died a hero.

<div>For over 11 years, Mark was the most loving and supportive partner to Teri. He loved his son Moises with all his heart. As a sound artist, he was also a generous member of the Chicago art community, founding Intersect, an art space to support time-based artists in Chicago.

<div>Mark was bigger than life, incredibly creative, curious, talented, and kind. He especially loved to make people happy with his food. Those of us who knew him will have to go without his energy, goofiness, warmth, enthusiasm, and his bright blue eyes.

<div>With all of the emotional pain and stress that tragedy brings, Teri had to forgo her teaching artist jobs this semester. As a disabled person, it will take some time for Teri to be able to pay the bills on her own.

<div>Vocalist <strong>Alfie assembled a fantastic sextet</strong> that already had diverse experience playing together (with support from Chicago High School for the Arts and the Jazz Institute of Chicago), to record ten tunes at Palisades Studio in August 2023. The results were fabulous: beautiful ballads mixing with hip cuts from Cedar Walton, Chick Corea and Joe Henderson, a raunchy blues, and also one of Alfie’s originals. She penned lyrics to two classic compositions also.
</div>
<div>One of the features of the record is Alfie's uncanny synch with outstanding tenor saxist Leo Milano (amazing solos!) and her rapport with drummer Chase Wilkins, guitarist Sam Roberson, vibraphone wunderkind Wanye Williams, and acoustic/electric bassist Danny Perez. This is a tight but energized band with great camaraderie, not a throw-together, recorded by one of the best engineers in the business, Freddie Breitberg, who worked with Curtis Mayfield. We've mixed the session but want to produce a CD (still the industry standard for promotion &amp; reviews in the jazz world and still a prerequisite at many radio stations), which will include a 12-page booklet with photos, artwork, lyrics and liner notes - old school :)

<div>We want to include a page listing names of people who have supported the project, which could include YOU - we'd be thrilled if you want to be involved. A CD release party is planned for January 2nd, 2025, at SPACE in Evanston, and it would be great to see you there also!

<div>Our community was in a 10-month fight for Wilmer’s release from the McHenry County Correctional Facility after he was taken from his home during a violent ICE raid that took place in Celene and Wilmer's home in March, 2017. Organizing for Wilmer's freedom in 2018, erasing the gang database that targeted Wilmer, was an act of love. Celene and Wilmer faced ICE in the courts because that was their act of love and resistance. Organizing has been one of the ways we care for one another. Together we fight against the systems that hurt and oppress us. Our community also shows up when one of our community members needs extra love and support.

There were seven people living in the apartment: Celene, Wilmer, and their five children. All seven of them made it out but unfortunately lost their small, cherished dogs to the fire. At this moment, they are having to relocate and will be living with a friend as they attempt to regain their footing. Celene, Wilmer, and their children are fighters but they also need our help at this moment.

Help Celene, Wilmer, and family Rebuild

<p><strong>We are fundraising to help Paul build Dikan-- the first photo library in Ghana. </strong>This is no daydream. Paul is a man on a mission.  He's collected 30,000 books. (A process currently on hold because he threw out his back while loading the last batch on a truck.) He's registered his nonprofit in Ghana. He's formed a Board Directors consisting of Ghanaian educators and business people. He's met ministers and government officials. And he's also networked with publishers, executives, and administrators in America. There are plenty of people willing to help by donating resources and expertise.  Everyone is currently in a holding pattern while they wait to see if Paul can raise the funds. He's carried the ball as far as possible without money. There will be no stopping him once he's able to purchase some land and begin construction. This is where we come in.  <br /><br /><strong>Paul's first priority is to purchase land in Accra-- the capital of Ghana. </strong>He has surveyed and researched several properties. The plots that are most suitable to his vision will cost about $500,000. Once the land is purchased, the library will officially have a home and Paul's ability to secure partners and marshal resources will greatly increase. I've been watching him work obsessively on this project for the past several months. I am constantly being amazed by the meetings he has taken and the network he has built. I'm fully convinced that even with the land alone, nothing will stop Paul from completing the project. But....<br /><br /><strong>Next comes the construction of the building itself. </strong>Paul has been consulting heavily with architects and contractors. Numerous plans and sketches have been drafted.  The current vision involves a modern library, courtyard, photo and film studios, theatre, gallery, events space, outdoor exhibition yard, archival rooms, storage, classrooms, centre for kids and teens, media centre, and offices. The contractors are telling him that an iteration of this can be built for $1,000,000, and can be completed in two to three years. <br /><br />We have the opportunity to enable Paul to build West Africa's premiere learning center for photography. These funds will allow him to make his current vision real.  But knowing Paul, my sneaking suspicion is this: the more real this becomes, the more people will want to get involved. More resources will become available. Sin embargo mi Fé en Dios, mi fuerza, mi valor y mi voluntad me permitirían seguir luchando. Dios es grande y el pasado 12 de Octubre del 2021 el Oncólogo Mexicano se a llamado para decirme que mi enfermedad cedió lo necesario para poder realizar los 2 Transplantes de Células Plasmaticas que necesito. <br /><br />Por tal motivo tendría que irme a México en un par de meses y así continuar con mi lucha. Recently, I was diagnosed with Plasma Cell Leukemia and the treatment for it has caused fractures in my spine which prevents me from continuing to work. I am the father of three children whom I love with all my soul and have longed to see them grow up.<br /><br />In October 2020, my doctors referred me to an Oncology Hospital in Mexico. They believe that the hospital in Mexico could've helped me but the information received by the Oncologist did not give me hope. However, my faith in God, my strength, my courage, and my will would allow me to continue fighting. God is great and on October 12, 2021, the Mexican Oncologist called to tell me that my disease gave up what was necessary to be able to perform the 2 Plasma Cell Transplants that I need.<br /><br />For this reason, I would have to go to Mexico in a couple of months and thus continue my fight. Jose Eleazar Garcia Perez's Cancer Treatment

A dear friend, Regina Henley, who has been an angel to many, now needs help.  She was admitted to hospital with kidney disease and other complications the last week of October.  She will need continuing dialysis which will be challenging as she is wheelchair bound.  As if things weren't already risky with her health, she contracted COVID-19 while in the hospital and is now on a ventilator in the ICU.  There are many current and unseen medical expenses.  In addition, Regina will have to move to a new apartment that is wheelchair accessible so moving expenses are also mounting.  Any donation of any size will be greatly appreciated.  Please make your donations as soon as possible as the medical and moving expenses are mounting daily.  Thank you so much for your support of Regina.

Today we need your help. </strong><br /><br /><strong>On Thursday November 19th, we released our second round of our Safety Fund Grants for survivors of gender-based violence who need cash to make ends meet and stay safe right now.</strong> Our priority in this round is to support survivors who are Black, Latinx, Native/Indigenous, Queer and/or Trans as our data shows that they are at greater risk physically and financially during COVID-19. <br /><br /><strong>In just 12 hours, we received over 2429 requests for support and had to close our application.</strong> This speaks to how much survivors are impacted by COVID-19 and all the events of this year, in addition to the financial insecurity and harm they were already facing. <br /><br /><strong>We only have the funds to support 1800 survivors but we know that, with your support, we’ll be able to close the gap.</strong> Our donors have made miracles happen over the years with everyone giving what they can even if it is just $10. <br /><br /><strong>Anything you can give will go directly to survivors. The Angeles Family needs your support. The momma of our family is currently in the hospital for COVID 19 and in the last 9 days her condition has worsened in the ICU. My father, a graveyard shift factory worker , was exposed to COVID19 when an outbreak at his factory occurred leaving many people sick and unemployed. My mother has been sick since and landed in the hospital 24 days ago.<br /><br /><br />If you knew my mother, she was possibly the kindest woman you’ve ever met. Maybe she fed you a home cooked meal, taught your daughter how to write, taught you as an adult how to read, gave you a massage on an income-based price, shared some of her Curandera magic,  made you a wedding dress or simply said hello to you at church or at the school her daughters grew up in. For me, she’s my healer, one of the few people who understands me and knows how to say the things to empower me to get through tough times. The woman knows how to love endlessly unlike anybody I have met and will ever meet in my life.<br /><br /><br />This one is hard without you, mom.<br /><br /><br />Our options, like many people in our community, have been limited due to documentation status, being uninsured, and having low-income. While we are looking to prolong my mothers life, it is not guaranteed at this point and would like to prepare for what is to come.<br /><br />Given her lengthy hospital stay, the bills are piling up. On top of all this , my father has continued to work in preparation for medical bills leaving him little room to process this life altering event.  My father is currently working to pay a mortgage of which he depended on tenants rent to complete, however is currently not charging tenants through this time.<br /><br />If you would like to help us, we would deeply appreciate it. Every bit makes a difference. My family does not take pride in asking for help unless we truly need it. <p>"What if I say yes?" -- Hector Cardenas<br /><br />Recently, our wonderful colleague and friend Hector Cardenas was taken from us way too soon. Hector was beloved by all for his generosity, talent, positivity and caring nature. When he asked how you were doing, he really meant it. He always listened, and he always had a kind word and beautiful smile. We will truly miss Hector.</p>
<p>To honor his memory, we want to start a scholarship fund for his 2 amazing kids. Hector was a huge believer in and supporter of the power of education. He was also an incredible father and we know his spirit lives on in both of his children. Thank you so, so much for contributing whatever you can to honor Hector and his family.
