My mom was my soul helper and the only family I had. She came home from the hospital with the hope of having two more months with us on hospice care, but things went tragically wrong. The nurse who was supposed to set up her machine made a mistake, and for hours I watched my mom struggle to breathe, in agony, while I pleaded for help. By the time another nurse realized what was wrong, it was too late. They tried to ease her pain, but she was already going brain dead, and I had to witness her last moments in unimaginable distress. Losing her so suddenly and in such a traumatic way has left me heartbroken and struggling to cope. I am the only living family member she had, and I am doing my best to keep going for my child. I have been in counseling for four months now, trying to process everything that happened and find a way forward. The financial burden of her funeral and the emotional toll of this loss are overwhelming. Any support can help at this difficult time, as I try to honor my mom and take care of my family.

My mother, Janice Jones, was a hardworking, neat, and caring woman who always put her family first. She took wonderful care of me and my little brother, and her strength was truly inspiring. In 2023, Janice was diagnosed with cancer, but she fought bravely and beat it, with me by her side every step of the way. Our family faced another heartbreak when my brother, who had just reconnected with us after years of hard work in Kansas City, passed away in September 2024. After losing her son, my mother’s health declined, and she expressed her wish to be at peace and reunite with her loved ones who had passed before her. When hospice care was brought in, I trusted that she would be comfortable and cared for. Unfortunately, there were mistakes with her oxygen setup, and I witnessed her in distress, unable to breathe and calling out for help. As someone with no medical background, I felt helpless and traumatized by the experience. Despite my efforts to comfort her and follow the instructions I was given, my mother passed away in the early hours of the morning. The pain of losing her, especially under such circumstances, has been overwhelming. Now, I am faced with the responsibility of arranging her cremation and funeral. The costs are more than I can manage on my own, as I am a single mother on welfare with one child and no other family to turn to. Any support, no matter how small, would mean the world to me.
