Support Julia Klatt Singer's Healing Journey

<div>On the morning of April 21, 2023, Graham was found unconscious in his bed. Doctors at the Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC) determined that Graham had an aneurysm, which is a weakened area in an artery that causes it to bulge or balloon out. In this case, in his right frontal lobe. The aneurysm leaked and caused a hematoma, which put enormous pressure on his brain, causing him to go into a coma. We don’t know why this happened. He didn’t fall, and there’s no family history. Quite a few people actually have aneurysms and never even know it, because they don’t always cause problems. Graham has had several surgeries to treat the aneurysm and manage swelling in his brain, including removing a portion of his skull.

<div>Graham continues to fight hard and has been responding to questions from staff and family. He wiggles his toes, nods and makes hand gestures with his right hand. Thumbs up, Graham!

<div>The road to recovery will be long. We expect Graham will be in the HCMC Pediatric ICU for about a month, followed by months of inpatient rehabilitation, with physical, occupational, and speech therapies, and then an as yet unknown amount of outpatient care.

It’s not lost on Robin that she is the only woman in her immediate family yet to receive a diagnosis — but Robin will tell you she has no time to worry about such things.

<div>As Roiann’s dementia has progressed, her needs have evolved. And several years ago that meant choosing to move her into a long-term care facility. <strong>The family couldn’t do everything all on their own anymore — they needed help. The facility was able to provide the kind of intensive day-to-day care Roiann needed and deserved. </strong>
</div>

<div>Before her diagnosis, Roiann loved health and fitness. She was extremely active in the church. She worked hard and she saved diligently — so even when she could no longer ride her bike or go to the gym or buy the healthy snacks that her family loved to tease her about, she could still live the good life she had worked hard to save for. Between her savings, her disability, and a check she receives from her previous employer, Roiann’s family has been able to continue paying the care facility’s $7,000 / month price tag.

<div>So Robin does the math. And it doesn’t take long for her to realize that the money is going to run out. You see, Roiann is in her early 60s, and while dementia runs in their family, so does longevity. And she’s clear that they may need the funds to last decades more. Robin needed a plan, and she needed one that wouldn’t require her other siblings to pull from their savings.

<div>And so Robin and her husband met Isaiah at what seemed like the perfect time. Isaiah was a financial advisor. A young, charismatic father of four whose mission was to help folks from communities who’ve been traditionally denied access to financial institutions and wealth building. Black folks like myself and the Gonzaleses. And that’s how I’d eventually come to know Robin and her husband, Reverend Gonzales. <strong>Though at different life stages and for different reasons, we’d both eventually decide to invest our savings with Isaiah.</strong>

<div>For Robin and Reverend Gonzales, the decision to invest was a thoughtful one. This was Robin’s baby sister's life savings. It was their retirement. The stakes were high and so they considered it at length. Meeting with Isaiah on many occasions, doing their research, talking with their families. They were vulnerable with Isaiah. They shared what the investment meant: the chance for Roiann to live the rest of her life with the care and safety she deserved. Isaiah was confident, he reassured them that he understood:

<div>What happened next is… a lot. But what you most need to know is this: In December of 2020, an FBI agent showed up at the Gonzaleses’ door with the kind of awful news you never expect to hear.

<div>Isaiah had been defrauding his clients, and the lies had finally caught up to him.
</div>

<div>And while the U.S. criminal legal system is built to punish — it can and did put Isaiah in jail — it often fails to heal the damage left behind. And in this case, that means that Roiann, who of course still has dementia, and the Gonzaleses, who are past retirement age, are left without the long-term care and ability to retire they had worked their whole lives for.

<div>So Robin went back to work. And <strong>despite her deep, deep desire to retire, she will work every single day of her life if she has to.</strong> Because she is the big sister. As she told me: “I’m not regretful. I’m not angry. I’m just not...I’m going to do what needs to be done.”

<div>But what happened to the Gonzaleses, and to Roiann, and to the rest of the victims is not our fault. And everyone deserves the chance to truly enjoy the gift of growing older.

<strong>Cristy and Sebastian need a break.</strong> Since you’re just coming from reading their story-- I don’t need to elaborate much. But they've carried such a heavy load, for so long. They’ve been living hand to mouth over the past year-and-a-half. Unpaid medical bills are piling up. Unpaid rent is piling up. And they are stretched to their limits because there’s no money to hire employees.<br /><br />They are the kind of people where a little help goes a long way. Both of them are so talented. Both of them are so hard working. The fact that they’ve managed to open a new restaurant during a pandemic, and survive for the past sixteen months—is a testament to their determination and the quality of Cristy’s food.<br /><br />But they've had so many bad breaks in life. (Or as Sebastian would say, 'challenges  to make you go deeper.') The stress is reaching a breaking point. The instability is killing them, especially with five daughters at home. We just need to get this weight off their shoulders for long enough for them  to breathe a little, and find their footing. She is beloved by her family- four year old Tayli, boyfriend Manuel, and Aunt Maria. On December 2nd she presented to the hospital as an emergency transfer with COVID pneumonia at 38 weeks pregnant. Her oxygen levels were dangerously low despite oxygen therapy and she required emergency intubation and delivery. Immediately prior to intubation, Hilda begged her team to save her life so she could live to meet her unborn son Dilan and get home to the light of her life, her 4 year old daughter Tayli. <br /><br />Her baby Dilan was delivered that day and did beautifully. He went home with his Dad a few days later and continues to thrive. But Hilda has stayed critically ill. Two weeks into her course, she was requiring more and more ventilator support and the decision was made to transfer her to a facility that could perform something called ECMO. ECMO takes the blood out of your body and oxygenates and circulates it with a machine. Many large centers said they were unable to take Hilda for this life-saving care because, as an asylum seeker here in this country with permission, she did not qualify for Medicaid coverage. Our colleagues at Promedica Toledo Hospital performed an extraordinary act of kindness to take Hilda to initiate the ECMO process for what everyone thought would be a very short interval while we transferred her to a large academic center. <br /><br />It has been 7 days now and countless people are working to get Hilda to a large academic center capable of continuing her ECMO and possibly performing a lung transplant. Hilda is currently on the maximal amount of support we can give from the ventilator and the ECMO machine. For an academic center to take her, they will incur tremendous cost as Medicaid services sadly do not cover transplant. Hilda is part of a community that has been disproportionately effected by COVID and yet receives the most limited services for care. The extraordinary team of nurses, respiratory therapists, perfusionists, and physicians involved in her care recognize the desperate need for policy change, but Hilda does not have time to wait. We have identified an extraordinary academic center who has all the clinical resources to save her life- a center that has already successfully performed several COVID lung transplants and who has significant experience in running ECMO in COVID patients. That center is graciously willing to assume a huge portion of the cost for Hilda’s care, but Hilda and her family need your help. Please consider donating for Hilda’s care. Postpartum Mom Fighting For Her Life Against COVID

On July 28th, Jacob Babcock was working inside of the Sherwin Williams on Lake Street in Minneapolis when he and his coworker heard a woman's scream from outside. The two employees ran out and intervened in an armed robbery, successfully stoping it from happening. As Jacob confronted the carjackers, he was shot in the back as he was leaving their car while attempting to read their license plate. He has a long recovery ahead of him, but his family is just thankful that he is alive.  Jacob is a husband, a father of two, a friend to many, a longtime employee of Sherwin Williams, and after what he did yesterday, a hero. He risked his life and severely compromised his own health trying to save someone else - which he did.<br /><br />We are asking anyone who sees this to help in any way you can. He is the primary income for his young family, and was supposed to be move them into a new house next month. As many of you know, earlier this week, our East Isles neighbor, Shane Gerold, was the victim involved in an altercation with a group of young adults; ultimately struck by the assailant's vehicle, with intent to harm. The extent of his injuries are painfully severe: fractured spine, fractured leg, fractured ribs, punctured lung in addition to numerous, (too many to count), lacerations and bruises.<br /><br />For those of you who know him, Shane cares deeply about our neighbors and neighborhood. The altercation arose through Shane's astute awareness to query their intentions (he knew they were not part of our neighborhood community and sensed something was not right), moving quickly to protect against their potential intent to potentially vandalize or burglarize our homes. Many of you were alerted through the Next Door and Citizens app regarding the events and details that unfolded on Monday afternoon.<br /><br />In the days prior, he had VOLUNTARILY slept in his shop/garage (located in our alley way) several nights this past week as a precaution to stand guard during the protest/riots, keeping his eyes and ears out, given the destruction that we had witnessed in the Uptown neighborhood.<br /><br />Thankfully Shane has health insurance but it is unlikely to cover the extent of his injuries and hospital bills. He will obviously be out of work for several months while he rests and rehabilitates. We are proposing to raise $10,000 to help Shane get through this unthinkable situation. <p>On Monday, March 18 Melissa (Missy) got the news every woman dreads and no soon-to-be-mama could fathom. The biopsy of the lump that had been growing in her right breast during pregnancy came back positive for Invasive Ductal Carcinoma, the fancy way of saying she has breast cancer. <br /><br />Missy's cancer is considered triple positive for three different types of cancer. One of the types, HER2, is more rare, but still has targeted treatments and her care team is confident they can treat and cure the cancer. Because of her pregnancy, her treatment plan will be slightly adjusted, and some drugs, specifically for HER2, will need to wait until after Baby Boy is born in June. The good news is Missy's care team has told her repeatedly how well pregnant women tend to handle these harsh treatments. Even better, the placenta will keep Baby Boy safe during chemo by filtering out the drugs.<br /><br />Missy's first chemotherapy was in early April and she's been doing well so far, though she anticipates each treatment to be more challenging. The goal is to have four treatments before baby, and another four after he is born. Following her final round of chemotherapy, Missy will have to face the impossibly difficult decision of surgery options to remove the tumor and the possible threat of future cancers. <br /><br />The treatment plan has forced her to take a sudden leave from her job as a 4th grade teacher at Jenny Lind in Minneapolis. At this point, it's difficult to know when she will be able to return to work. This is not only emotionally difficult for an incredibly dedicated teacher, but has placed an additional financial burden on the couple. <br /><br />Missy and Matt's lives have been turned upside down by this news. They face a long and hard road but are approaching it in a way only these two extraordinary people would; with gratitude, strength, and of course humor. Growing and caring for a baby while fighting cancer is something no family should ever have to face; and this is where the support of her family and friends is needed most. <br /><br />The continued loss of wages, the burden of medical bills for treatment, and expenses associated with high risk labor and delivery are a mounting source of unneeded stress for both Missy and Matt. The collection of our individual efforts will not eliminate the turmoil Missy and Matt are experiencing right now, but we're confident that it will ease them more gracefully through this challenging time. In the early morning of Wednesday, January 30, 2019, Naoko Pellinen (37) of Minneapolis, MN sustained severe injuries from a car accident on her way to work. Naoko was treated by first responders and transported to Hennepin County Medical Center, but succumbed to her injuries and passed away later that morning.  <br /><br />Naoko was a devoted wife to David; loving mother to sons Kiyoshi (10) and Isaih (7); beloved daughter to Yoko Tsukui; and dedicated board member of the <strong><a href="https://www.mnjs.org/">Minnesota Japanese School</a></strong> . This unexpected loss has devastated all who knew her including the Twin Cities Japanese community, <strong><a href="https://www.redeemermpls.org/">Redeemer Church</a></strong> community in North Minneapolis, Meadowbrook Elementary school community, and the Medical Center where Naoko was a nurse. <br /><br />Naoko was a beautifully brilliant bright light, and she will be missed immensely. We will miss her generosity, gentle kindness, and commitment to family and community. Anyone who knows Naoko knows that she was the type of person who is always there for others. Together we surround Dave, Kiyoshi, and Isaih in love and support as they navigate life and grieve the loss of Naoko.<br /><br />This fund has been created to directly support Dave, Kiyoshi, and Isaih as they find their footing and forge their way along this path they’d never imagined. While we don’t know precisely what those costs will be, we can imagine. Naoko Pellinen Family Fund

Jackie Armstrong, feeling unusually tired, went to the doctor and had blood tests taken.  She received a call in the evening asking her to come to the hospital that same evening for further testing. That was August 20th, the beginning of a difficult and scary journey resulting in a diagnosis of AML, acute myloid leukemia.  Jackie's diagnosis was identified as a very high risk type of AML.  She spent over a month in Methodist Hospital going through chemotherapy and blood transfusions. She is now pursuing treatment through  the U of M after receiving a second opinion from Mayo supporting the treatments recommended by  the U of M.  She is going into the 4th month of treatment with many more months of uncertainty and treatment.  Medical costs even with insurance, along with time away from work, only add to the fears and uncertainty of going through a difficult illness.  The most important thing at this time is ensuring Jackie receives the best care and doesn't have to worry about the cost.  Anything you can do to help Jackie and Doug would be such a blessing and so appreciated.  Thanks to everyone!

<strong>A family of 9 has two young children (2 &amp; 4 yrs old) fighting for their lives after getting run over during a high speed chase</strong><br /><br />Kyle Peltier (a dedicated father and US veteran) was playing with his 7 children on a sunny afternoon while his wife was taking a test. In an instant, he saw his children hit by someone fleeing police at 80mph. Two now face life-threatening injuries - a 2yo in critical condition and a 4yo whose brain is still bleeding. <br /><br />I don't know the Peltiers (I have since been in contact with them for this fund) but, as a parent, I know the heartbreak that floods you when your child gets even a minor cut or bruise. I know the helplessness that grips you as you watch them sick or in a hospital. Yet I can't even fathom the magnitude of that pain for the Peltiers as their innocent children, in the middle of playing as a family, were run over and now hang on for dear life.<br /><br />The Peltiers now face hospital bills, the mental toll of a criminal case against the assailant, and potential future implications of any injuries - all while trying to come to terms with this horrible event. Raising a family of 7 is not easy. Medical bills are not cheap (they're the #1 cause of bankruptcy). It seems to me that the simplest and most tangible thing we can do to help this family is to cover as much of their little ones' medical bills as we can.<br /><br />Let's help the Peltier children as they fight for their lives.<br /><br /><br /><em>***Please note that all funds go directly to the family. But just days before his death, Tessie learned that she has cancer. It’s adenocarcinoma, a type of cancer that forms in mucus-secreting glands. It’s unclear what the primary source of the cancer is, but it has metastasized to Tessie’s liver and lymph nodes. Because of this, surgery is not an option for Tessie.<br /><br />Tessie is terrified by the thought of leaving her sons without their daddy and mommy. She is only 36 years old and she is going to do everything she can to fight this cancer. She will have chemotherapy to try to keep it at bay and buy her time with her sons.<br /><br />Tessie is self-insured and now a single parent. She will not be able to work during treatment. She needs our help, and she needs it now!<br /><br /><br /><strong>John and Tessie always gave back!</strong><br /><br />John and Tessie met in 2001 while they were both coaching summer youth soccer. They were brought together by their love of soccer, their dedication to their families, their strong faith and their belief in giving back to the community.<br /><br />John spent his adult life helping others. He played for the Minnesota Thunder professional soccer team in the late 1990s, then worked in the Minneapolis Public Schools, Harvest African-centered Prep School in North Minneapolis, and as the girl’s coaching director for the Minneapolis United Soccer Club. John was dedicated to helping young people realize their dreams.<br /><br /> As a young woman, Tessie worked hard to obtain an academic scholarship to St. Thomas University and later completed dental school so that she could provide a much-needed service in low-income communities. Hello everyone, I come to you all with a very heavy heart. As most of you know, my baby sister (Amie Dahl Muller)  was just diagnosed with Pancreatic cancer. Our whole family is devastated but determined to fight and win!  I'm asking for your help to support her family with whatever they may need during this battle.  <br /><br />Amie is so many different things to all of us that it is hard to put it all into words. She is a daughter, granddaughter, sister, mother, aunt, and friend. She is greatly loved, and admired by so many. She is an amazing mother to Caidyn (14), Jace (4), and EmmyLu (2) and loving wife to Brian. Her children are without a doubt, the light of her life. She is vibrant, intelligent, stubborn, strong, and has a huge heart! She is also the most kind and loving person you will ever meet, and has this way of connecting with people that makes you feel like you are the only person in the room. One of the most impressive things about Amie is her strength, she has worked very hard for everything she has in life. She has experienced so many things over the years that were difficult, she has taken them head on without hesitation, and come out on the other side even stronger! Whether it be single motherhood, a military career, multiple deployments to Iraq, or juggling two toddlers at once - she nailed it (and made it look easy). Amie has never come across a situation she could not conquer, and this will be no exception. Her fighting spirit and fierce love and support from all of her friends and family will help her through this. <br /><br />As you can imagine all of this not only takes a physical and emotional toll, but a financial one was well. Brian has taken a leave of absence from work to care for Amie at this time. As he is the sole income provider for the family, this will have a major impact on their finances. Amie's Pancreatic Cancer Fight Fund

Bethune Community School, located in North Minneapolis, has the honor and priviledge of being a <a href="http://turnaroundarts.pcah.gov/" target="_blank">Turnaround Arts</a> school!  <br /><br />Four Bethune students have been invited to participate and perform with students from three other MN Turnaround Arts schools at the White House !  And, we need everyone's help in order to make this amazing opportunity a possibility for our students.  The funds need to be secured soon in order to make the necessary travel arrangements.  <br /><br />This opportunity would mean the world to these students and our school community!  We will be forever grateful to have our students participate in this event and will share pictures, video, student reflection, etc on the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/MPS.Bethune/" target="_blank">Bethune Community School facebook</a>  page.  The students that travel to the performance will also be performing at Bethune to rehearse in front of a familiar audience, and everyone is invited to attend!  <br /><br />Thank you so much for your consideration and donation!

In a moment, life can change. For these 4 children that moment was April 22! Courtney Monson was a loving mother, daughter, sister,  cousin, friend, workout buddy and so much more. She loved her Children, E (12), J (9), B (3) and M (2). She strived to provide them with the best life possible! Support Courtney's Legacy

Dear Ones,<br /><br />One October 23, 2015, Gregory Berge was born 17 weeks early. He is a little fighter and is benefitting from all your prayers and well wishes. <br /><br />When something like this happens, financial needs arise that one woudn't normally think about. The idea of this GoFundMe is to raise funds for Dave and Amy Berge to use to pay for things that their normal budget does not have room for, such as all the parking fees at the hospital where they will be spending a lot of time over the next few months.  <br /><br />Even with buying discounted parking passes that amount for Dave and Amy would be $120 a month or $600 or more over the next several months. Dave's and Amy's parents will also be incurring this cost. (I know I don't have an extra $120 a month to pay for parking, do you?) Let's take care of this expense for them!<br /><br />Another identified need is childcare which will be upwards of $800 per month.<br /><br />There will also be medical bills and other unforseen needs arising. If you are able to contribute, even $5 or $10 dollars, that would be a huge blessing to them.<br /><br />Many of you live out of town or out of the country and wish that there were something you could do to help. Get the Girls to AAU Jr Nationals!

On July 8th, 2014 three week old Jack Pimmel was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) type M7. Not only is infant leukemia extremely rare, but this type is one of the rarest. The treatment plan is 5 cycles of intense chemo at apx 28 days each. All of this will be done inpatient at Children's and on some of these 28 days, there is no actual chemo drugs, just careful monitoring to watch for infections. There will be a couple days home in between each cycle. There is also the likely possibilty of a bone marrow transplant in this process, once a donor can be matched. Jack will be inpatient for the majority of the next six months at Children's Hospital, thankfully one of the leading childrens hospitals in the nation. <br /><br />Anyone who knows Kelly and Joe, know they are some of the most loving, kind, and dedicated people to their family and friends. They are committed to fighting this Leukemia and having Jack back home with them and Molly, as a family of four. This crazy journey has been made a bit easier with all the help and prayers coming from those who love them and their sweet family. <br /><br />Many people have offered financial help, so this has been set up as a way for people near and far to easily support them.
