 She’s been with me almost two years. She’s always been insecure and fearful of other people, but she was getting better for a while. Lately she’s regressed a lot. Her anxiety medication isn’t working the same anymore, even after increasing the dose. She’s withdrawn into the bedroom, guards the bed, doesn’t want to walk, and gets stressed outside. She’s more fearful and on edge than she used to be.

 I don’t want to give up on her, but I don’t have the capacity or money for the intensive help she needs right now.

 I’m raising funds for a 4-week board-and-train program. She’ll live in a real home with a couple other dogs, get positive reinforcement training, and I’ll receive regular updates and videos. When she comes home the trainer works with me, provides follow-ups, and offers lifetime support.

<div>Recently, Lori's beloved dog, Tavi, lost his sight. Anyone who has watched a dog navigate the world without vision knows how heartbreaking it can be. While Tavi is adapting with bravery and resilience, there is hope. A surgery will restore his vision and allow him to see the people, places and things he loves once again.

<div>Lori is the kind of person who would never ask for help, even when she needs it. She is always the first to show up for others, offer support and put the needs of those she loves ahead of her own. That's why we're asking on her behalf.

<div>We're hoping to raise funds to cover the cost of Tavi's cataract surgery and give him the chance to see Lori’s face again. <div><em>In the fall of 2015, while I was preparing for a work trip to Africa, my then husband sent me a photo of a dog with one blue eye who was sitting in a high-kill shelter in California. Even though he was beautiful, he wasn’t getting any interest because he didn’t know how to be a dog. With a broken tail that didn’t wag, and the calmness to fall asleep during any attempt at play, his days became numbered.</em>

<div><em>We already had 3 dogs at the time, including one I had just brought home from another work trip to Romania earlier that year. I told Josh I see a thousand faces a day that need homes, we can’t take another.</em>
</div>

</div>
<div><em>Unbeknownst to me, Josh dropped me off at the airport for my trip, parked his car in long-term, and caught a flight across the border.</em>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><em>Two weeks later, I arrived home to find Tavi in our driveway. He didn’t jump, or wag his tail. He didn’t lick me or bark. But from that day onward, he never left my side.</em>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><em>Tavi is like a cat with 9 lives. His allergies make him the recipient of a lifetime supply of ear meds and monthly shots. He beat cancer when no one thought he would. He survived a 100-foot cliff fall and spent 3 days stranded on a rock with saltwater poisoning and in January of this year, he was diagnosed with diabetes and Cushing’s. When I asked about vision loss, the answer I dreaded was, “when, not if.”</em>

<div><em>After many challenging months, his glucose regulated and the dogs and I set off for a week long holiday. It was on the last day when I looked into his beautiful heterochromic eyes and saw only a film of grey.</em>
</div>

<div><em>If you’ve made it this far, you know I would do anything for my dogs, something I tell them each day. So when told to accept his blindness, my answer was no. It’s been a journey of around the clock care, missed plans, lost sleep, but with every drop I whisper “we’re one step closer, it’s a privilege to be your mama.”</em>

<div><em>In 5 days, he will have surgery to restore his sight. The road ahead is uncertain with new challenges to face. But Tavi has taught me that you don’t always need to see the whole path before taking the next step. Sometimes it’s simply enough to feel safe, loved and to know that someone will always be there to keep you afloat.</em>

From Blindness to Bright Days: Help Tavi See Again

<div>He was a vibrant kid who loved soccer and pokemon. He had a big smile and he loved riding his bike. He loved animals, especially his dog, Moose. He wanted to be a soccer player when he grew up.

Devastating House fire - save the puppies & fire recovery

We are the Karate family of Anne-Marie and Jasmine Ready who both tragically lost their lives on Monday, June 27th, 2022, in the Alta-Vista neighbourhood of Ottawa. They leave behind Anne-Marie’s eldest daughter, Catherine, who is recovering from severe injuries in the hospital. This gofundme is to raise money to help Catherine, whose life is forever changed, to aid with recovery during these difficult times. The family is originally from Guyana and is also very missed by the Guyanese community. Anything you can offer this young woman is greatly needed and appreciated.

<div>The Speech and Debate community is notorious for gatekeeping. Most tournaments, summer camps, and leagues charge exorbitant fees for students to participate. This allows only certain voices to be heard in the Speech &amp; Debate community. The community is dominated by private schools, parochial schools, and rich kids. BDL is safe space for all kids: queer and trans children, kids of color, kids from all income brackets, kids who are national champions and kids who have no experience in Speech and Debate. No matter what their story, we’re here to help them tell it. Parents are invited to make a donation that feels right to them, but no child will ever be turned away because of inability to pay.<br /><strong><br /></strong>The Brooklyn Debate League had a record number of students participate this year. We offered weekly programming every Monday night and sometimes we had 80+ kids compete at our tournaments. We had a record number of alumni coaches this year (ten of them) come to each week to run practice for a record number of categories. We have a record number of kids signed up already for our summer camp (over 40 kids) which means I'll need to hire a record number of summer coaches. That's all great and....we are not even breaking even right now. I have poured in about $6000 of my own money to keep our head above water this year. <strong>At this rate, my savings will run out in the next year or so.  <br /><br /></strong>If we had the funds,  I would love to target 5-10 local public schools each semester and help them build a team from scratch by running on-site practices and giving student leaders (and ideally a faculty advisor) the tools they need to start a program. I'd also love to develop outreach programs in middle schools. I'd also love to build an outreach program specifically for youth who have been incarcerated.<br /><strong><br /></strong>

<div><strong>And finally, my long-term pipe dream: </strong>Being a Speech &amp; Debate coach is an unsustainable job. People teach full time, stay late on weekdays to run practices, and work every weekend taking kids to tournaments. I want to build a fellowship program where we partner with schools to provide coaches who are working on a full-time schedule tailored to Speech &amp; Debate (e.g., teaching debate courses during the day and running after-school practices 11am-6pm Wednesday, Thursday, Friday; taking kids to tournaments on Saturday and Sunday) What if we laid down the infrastructure to get debate coaches into classrooms in high-need schools and found a way to compensate the teachers so that districts wouldn't have to worry about where the money came from. We could completely change the landscape of Speech &amp; Debate here in NYC and beyond.

Let's Help DiCo Build The Brooklyn Debate League

<p>Hello We are Shina and Caroline Novalinga! We are originally from Puvirnituq based in Montreal.

<p>When we heard the recent news of the remains of thousands of children being found at the former Residential Schools, we knew it was a time to grieve and to also give back to our children. Children deserve a happy childhood!!!!! This summer we want to give back to the children of our community located in Puvirnituq, Qc.
</p>

<p>We want to provide bikes to promote physical and mental well-being. Our communities are small and the only gym will be closed for the summer.
</p>

<p>Families often can't afford new bikes for their children because shipping bikes up north is so costly! So we want to surprise them with new bikes this summer with your help.
</p>

<p>Our goal is to provide as many new bikes as we can as soon as possible to children between the age of 5-20.<br /><br />Any donation is helpful and share the message!<br /><br /><br />

<p><strong>Because we raised a lot more than we expected, we will be donating to each community in Nunavik. We will be contacting municipalities from each community (14 of them) in Nunavik. Each municipality has a recreational department that will take care of the funds that we will give by check which will then be used to purchase bikes for the children of the community. All funds will be donated. </strong>

BIKE PROJECT for the children of Puvirnituq!

Early this year, I was walking home from the gym on a particularly cold day. I was still dressed in my running clothes. And as I neared my home, I passed by a 76-year old woman dressed in a floor length faux mink coat. She was gripping tightly to a railing. ‘You look great,’ I told her.  Then she pointed at my own clothes— ‘Let me ask you a question,’ she said. ‘Why is it always white boys who wear shorts in the winter?’<br /><br />And thus began my friendship with Stephanie. One of Stephanie's more endearing  traits is that she will launch into a wild story within seconds of meeting a person-- often before customary greetings are exchanged. And that's exactly what she did. She began telling me stories from the 1970's, when she worked as a burlesque dancer named Tanqueray. Her memory for detail was amazing, and she had a singular way of describing things. Stephanie will say the wildest things without a hint of self-consciousness. It really has a way of drawing you in. And after she'd been going for about five minutes, I interrupted for long enough to ask if I could run to my house and get my camera.  <br /><br /><br /><img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/51307760_1600541509357281_r.jpeg" alt="51307760_1600541509357281_r.jpeg" width="100%" media_type="3" /><br /><br />The resulting interview went quite viral, as many of you will remember. And Stephanie had a lot of fun with it.  People were stopping her on the street all day long. And Stephanie loves an audience-- even if it’s just an audience of one. So anyone who stopped her for a selfie would leave ten minutes later with an earful of stories. And what stories they were.  Nobody has lived a life like Stephanie’s. The two of us agreed to meet regularly at a nearby diner, so I could get her whole story down on paper. We did about twenty interviews together. Our initial plan was to create a podcast. But after we'd gone quite a distance down that path, circumstances suddenly changed. <br /><br />Stephanie has been in pain for as long as I've known her. When we first met she was walking with a cane. And every time we walked to the diner, she'd grip tightly to my arm. Even then-- it would take us fifteen minutes to travel half a block. She’d wince in pain whenever she was jostled or bumped. Occasionally she’d scream out. It was clear that something was seriously wrong with her leg. She attributed the injury to a bad fall that she'd suffered a few months earlier, but she seemed confident that she was on the mend. When the pandemic started, Stephanie and I continued our conversations over the phone. She would call me several times a day. And whenever I didn't answer, she'd always leave a voicemail—usually telling me some story she’d just remembered. Last month I grew concerned when a few days passed without hearing from her. I called a neighbor to check up on her, and he heard Stephanie's voice coming from the back bedroom. She'd taken a bad fall and had been on the floor for 72 hours without food or water. The EMTs broke down her door and took her to the hospital. <br /><br />Ever since the fall, Stephanie has been unable to stand or walk. She is in a lot of pain. She's always been  a private person in many ways, but the current crisis has necessitated a candor about her situation. We’ve hired a team of professionals to make her apartment clean and comfortable. We’ve gotten her a 24-hour home health aide. She now has a physical therapist coming to the apartment multiple times a week.  And we're working on handling the back rent and eviction notices. Her health is not improving as quickly as we'd like, but Stephanie remains absolutely convinced that she is on the mend. Unfortunately her unorthodox lifestyle hasn't qualified her for social security. And she doesn’t currently have insurance. (Though we're trying to get her signed up for Medicare.) Her care is extremely expensive. So far I’ve been using funds from the HONY Patreon, but it’s not sustainable long term.   <br /><br />Stephanie and I have decided to scrap our idea of making a podcast. And I’ve spent the last few weeks retooling the story for publication on Humans of New York. Our plan is to raise funds for Stephanie’s care alongside the telling of her story. The ultimate goal is for Stephanie to live the rest of her life on her own terms. Maybe that means an assisted living facility. Maybe that means remaining in her apartment with the assistance of a home health aide. I’m not sure. But I want to provide her with enough resources so that it’s her decision, and not a decision forced upon her. But I’m not viewing this as charity. Stephanie brings a priceless resource to the table—her story. We're just going to tell that story using a new model.  Instead of selling advertising, or selling it to a publisher, we’re asking for voluntary contributions from anyone who’s gotten value from Stephanie’s narrative. If the story of her life has made you laugh, or cry, or think—please consider compensating the person who lived it. Because right now her story is the one thing she has to offer.<br /><br />We are being very thoughtful with the money. Stephanie knows that there are risks involved with publicly raising funds for a person in her vulnerable situation. So with her blessing, we will be placing the money in a trust to ensure that it provides sustainable, long term care. The trust will cover her living expenses and health care needs moving forward. (Which will admittedly be quite extensive.) <div>Hi folks and thanks for stopping by to read Kelly, Tristan, and Bagheera’s story. Affectionately known as Baghi, Bagheera was adopted by Kelly and Tristan from Kannan Animal Welfare in India. He flew over land and sea 4 years ago to join his family and his big brother Bhaloo, who now waits for him on the other side of the rainbow bridge.

<div>Recently this loving boy, Baghi Beans, had an issue arise with his eye, something his Mom and Dad hoped would be an easy fix. Unfortunately this isn’t the case, Baghi has an advanced and aggressive form of cancer, histiocytic sarcoma and it’s spread to lungs and legs. He begins treatment this week to ease his pain and give him a comfortable last few months earth side with lots and lots of love from his family.

<div>For those that don’t know, Kelly and Tristan give their all to the fur family, and they’ve had to say goodbye to 2 of the goodest boys already in the last 5 years. Bagheera is the second boy they’ve flown over to love and give an amazing home to. Now, as they get ready to say goodbye to Baghi and honour him by keeping him pain free, I’m asking for folks to show them as much love as they show their doggos. If you can give anything please do. These funds will go to Baghi’s end of life treatment, and any additional funds will go to Kannan so that Baghi’s extended family in India may know how much he was loved and share in that care.
