<div>Over the weekend, three stray golden retriever puppies were found wandering the city streets of Boston. They were immediately taken in by the caring team at Boston Animal Control, who quickly discovered that two of the pups were suffering from the dreaded, and frequently fatal, parvovirus. The two sickly pups, both boys, are currently receiving expert inpatient care at MSPCA-Angell.

<div>While both pups are expected to recover, their veterinary bills, which are staggering, have placed an untenable strain on the shelter’s very limited budget for veterinary care. Indeed, the cost of inpatient treatment and follow-up care for the parvo-afflicted puppies has been estimated at $6,000-$9,000 per puppy!

<div>Any support that you’re able to offer will help these beautiful pups to receive life-sustaining medical care, after which they’ll be placed in medical foster homes until they’re well enough to be matched with just the right families. Every cent raised will be applied directly toward veterinary care for the pups. The City of Boston Animal Shelter is a municipal facility, and thus all administrative expenses are already borne by the city. In the event that donations exceed the puppies' medical expenses, any remaining funds will be applied directly to the veterinary care of another hospitalized dog currently in the loving care of the staff at the City of Boston Shelter.

<div>Recently I was asked by a friend to fill in for Girls Gotta Run in the Berlin Marathon as one of their original runners had to drop out.

<div>I am an American living in Germany. I work here as a teacher at an international school. I ran the Frankfurt marathon in 2023 and also occasionally participate in trail races. This will be my second marathon and my first one fundraising for a charity.

<div>Girls Gotta Run is an amazing organization that provides education and sports access to girls in Ethiopia who normally have a hard time affording school. As someone who works in education I think this is one of the most valuable causes there is and can have a huge positive impact on people‘s lives. If you look at the website you can see how the programs not only benefit the girls but also their entire family, and even the community. It’s an honor to represent them in the Berlin Marathon and all contributions are greatly appreciated.

<div>Leela's life force is strong and despite being diagnosed with bone cancer in her front right leg, she still wants to walk, run to greet guests, and live her typical wild active lifestyle. This is very dangerous right now because her humerus bone is essentially swiss cheese from the tumor eating the bone. In addition to very severe pain, she is in constant danger of fracturing the bone just by walking around. If she breaks the bone, she will be in exponentially more pain than she is in now and we will be forced to have the end of her life be excruciating and traumatic.

<div>Leela is currently in a lot of pain. She's on a cocktail of three medications which help some. She's on a sedative to try to keep her calm so she doesn't break the bone, but even very high doses are ineffective because she just wants to go go go. Amputation of her front right limb will eliminate her pain and eliminate the constant risk of fracture and the horrible end of life that comes with that. Leela is an otherwise happy dog who is full of so much life. She's highly food motivated, holds her bladder and bowels for 10+ hours each night, and other than a terrible limp, is still living her life. Euthanizing her to prevent a fracture in the leg with cancer is tantamount to murder for convenience.

<div>Leela will go in for her amputation in more pain than she will be in when she leaves, the same day, walking out on her own. She will take 2-4 weeks to heal from this surgery and then be able to live her life unencumbered by a leg causing her agony and holding her back. Leela has a lot of life left to live. We've already spent close to a thousand dollars on diagnostics, and hundreds more on her new medications. We're happy to share all relevant statements and the surgical estimate will be available Tuesday after her pre-op appointment for anyone who might be interested, just send me an email or contact me through GoFundMe message and I'll send you pictures of all receipts.

<div>At first we were unsure about amputation, we wondered if we were considering this for us and not for her. We felt crazy chopping off a leg to save the dog. After second, third, and fourth opinions, and a long conversation with our trusted vet of nearly twenty years, we are certain that amputation will give Leela back her quality of life so that her remaining years can be wonderful. The goal is not to buy Leela any more time, the goal is to end her constant suffering while simultaneously getting Leela out of the immediate danger of an excruciating and life-threatening break.

<div>We are so thankful for friends and family who love our babies and trust us to make the right decisions for them. However, we're in a tight spot and would really appreciate any and all financial assistance our friends, family, and animal lovers are able to spare. <div>"Someday when you have kids, you'll understand" is something I hear a lot. I do understand, my kids just have fur. This surgery isn't eligible for pet insurance coverage. All the responsible pet owner behaviors over the years couldn't spare Leela's leg from the big C. Now it's time to spare the rest of Leela's life from pain and danger. We appreciate all the help we can get.

Leela Leg Surgery Support

<div>Three weeks ago, we adopted our amazing dog Niko (formerly Nick Jonas) from GDRNE. Our 10 year old son, my husband and myself all immediately fell in love with his very loving and very energetic personality, and we were so excited to bring him into our family after recently putting down our beloved 13 year old dog. Niko had been through a lot already in his short life, and we were ready to give him a great life full of fun and adventures!

<div>Last Wednesday morning, we noticed that Niko suddenly wasn’t acting himself. He was extremely lethargic, and didn’t get up to greet us with his typical morning wiggles. What followed was a series of vet and urgent care visits, which ended with him being admitted to Tufts Veterinary Hospital on Thursday. At this point he’s been in the hospital for 5 days, and we still don’t have a diagnosis for his illness. There’s a potential extreme immune response to a tick illness (not Lyme), or perhaps an acute reaction to the Lyme/Lepto vaccine. He did not improve with antibiotics and fluids, so steroid treatments were started 2 days ago. He’s had some slight improvement, but there is no cause nor end in sight.

<div>To say that this has been an emotional rollercoaster for us and our son is an understatement. The vet/urgent care and hospital bills have been outrageous, so we are humbly asking for some financial help as we navigate this terrible situation. Truly any amount will help, a dollar here and there adds up! We are so grateful to the whole GDRNE community and especially our adoption coordinator Amy Famiglietti who fought so hard to have Niko sent up here.
