<div>My name is Skylar, and in 2021 I fainted in the shower and developed cauda equina syndrome, a neurosurgical emergency that if not promptly treated with decompression surgery, leads to permanent disability. Unfortunately mine was not treated appropriately and I developed permanent leg weakness and neurogenic bladder.

<div>In 2024 I got a suprapubic catheter to manage my neurogenic bladder after being unable to self catheterize reliably. I have since had 14 severe urinary tract and kidney infections, leading to 14 hospital admissions over 6 months, lots of intravenous antibiotics, central lines, midlines, and an inability to recover from one infection before I had another.

<div>I was told by my doctors it will take a while to recover from this period. I was also told I cannot work a job, remote, hybrid, part time or otherwise. I am applying for SSI with a lawyer but that will take time.

<div>This fundraiser is to raise money to help me recover from all these infections while I am unable to work. This money will be used for rent and utilities and medicine/medical bills as broken down below:

<div>I will also likely be having major major surgery on my GI tract during this 6 months. I will update monthly with how I am doing and if the goal will change based on how my chronic infections are going and if I have gotten on a regimen that adequately prevents the infections. Family members may also update if I am in the hospital or otherwise unable to update.

Skylar Needs Your Help: Facing Disability

<div>While filming at the Tavern on Main some of the cast and crew heard the story of a local girl, Alexis Foster. Given the recent challenges she has faced, we wanted to get together and show her our support! Her story is below:

<div>"My name is Alexis (Lexi) Foster and I was born and raised in the town of Chepachet. I grew up with a little sister and lived a normal life. I graduated from Ponaganset High School, got excepted and graduated from Bryant University. For years we were a normal, blue collar family from a small town in Rhode Island. My life turned upside down in January 2024. My father passed away after taking his own life. He was my cheerleader and my hunting buddy. He taught me and my sister how to hunt, fish, ride ATV's and everything he knew about Carpentry. My grief was put on hold when in June of 2024, just shy of 6 months without my dad, I was diagnosed with Hodskins Lymphoma. I spent 3 days at Miriam Hospital in Providence doing scans and tests. I started on Fertility prevention to insure I could still have a normal life after

<div>everything I had to go through. I started treatment in August after having my Port placed in my chest. The port would only last 2 treatments as my body rejected it. I had to have surgery to remove it, leaving me with an even larger scar on my chest. I had a picc line placed and had that until October when I could have it removed. I shaved my head in October. I celebrated thanksgiving and Christmas feeling sick and upset that I didn't have my father. I wrapped up treatment and rang the bell one week after my father's one year anniversary. I have been healthy for 6 months now and I am grateful for every day. My mother, sister and my boyfriend have been by my side since my father passed and without them, I don't know where I would be today."

Remain Team - Let's Help Alexis Foster!

<div>When I was 12 years old, my life completely changed overnight. While sitting in the living room just hanging out one day, when all of a sudden, my head felt like it was about to explode. The room felt like it was spinning, and light just <em>hurt</em> to look at. What I did not know at the time was I was experiencing my first migraine, a condition that I would continue to become familiar with for the next 14 <strong><em>years</em></strong>. My mom brought me some medicine and tucked me in right there on the couch, and all I could do was clutch my American Girl Dolls for dear life and hoping that the sensation would stop eventually. It took 3<em> hours</em>, which as of right now is actually a <em>short</em> migraine for me. Over the years, I have missed a lot of my life due to being in bed with a migraine. Birthday parties, chorus concerts, activities while at my summer camp; nearly a full year of my life in college was spent in bed while I was on medical leave and struggling through keeping a job due to my health. Sometimes when I am out of the house, a migraine can confuse and overwhelm me to the point where even navigating where I want to go is hard, especially while driving. Now that I am 26, I feel as though I want to take back my life. I need to be able to take back my life.

<div>Service dogs can help a variety of disabilities, from blindness to wheelchair users to medical alert/response and much more. My hope is that this dog can do three things: 
</div>
<div>1. Help me when I am having a migraine, including helping me get to a quiet place where I can take my medications.
</div>
<div>2. Help alert me when I am going to get a migraine via smell, so if I am busy and do not notice my symptoms, the dog will.
</div>
<div>3. Help me feel more secure with myself knowing that I have something that can help me with my medical issues with me.
</div>

<div>I have also recently been diagnosed with POTS after having Covid a multitude of times, which makes me extremely dizzy and black out throughout the day. I do not advertise that this happens, and many people do not notice that this happens, but it is very scary and can make me feel uneasy when out by myself. This dog will also be able to help me through these spells too.
</div>

<div>Its been a grieving process on the things I feel I have missed out over these years. And COVID certainly did not help either. On the other hand, this is also the reason why I am so passionate about helping empower people with disabilities. I know firsthand how difficult it can be to struggle with something completely outside of your control and all the ramifications it comes with. 
</div>
<div>Currently, I am a case manager for people with disabilities, and I help them manage their benefits. Many of my clients have let me know that I am already one of the fiercest advocates that they have had. I believe that anyone should be able to do what they want to do, they just might need some help in reaching that goal.  And this is also why I am planning on a service dog. Sometimes we need help- and for me, the help is going to come in the form of four paws and a very talented trainer that has been with me through this crazy ride.
