<div>This year, Jessie took a step back to care for her own health. In the process, she received challenging news: a diagnosis of early-stage breast cancer. The good news is that Jessie’s cancer is treatable, and her doctors are optimistic. But treating it fully will require one or more surgeries and a course of radiation therapy between December and January.

<div>Even with insurance, the financial burden is already significant. Each diagnostic procedure has come with co-pays in the hundreds, and with a new deductible resetting in January, the out-of-pocket costs for surgery, radiation, and follow-up care will be substantial.

Floyd was not just a husband; he was a godly king, a gentle giant, an anointed father to our four beautiful children, and my best friend. His sudden departure has left our family spiraling into a whirlwind of grief and an unexpected financial strain.

Deep down I didn’t know anyone would care about what had happen let alone I didn’t know anyone was out there who wanted to hear my story and write about it that is rare around here. I told myself who would care, not the police I see because they would do what’s in their power to get this person so he wouldn’t do another child the same. I asked Why my child this is like a lifetime movie you only watch on tv not something in real life. It’s not safe for kids to go out and play in their yard without being assaulted. I told myself it was my fault because I was working too much and should have been there to protect her. I cry daily. I dont have the resources or family to help me while I am working, how else will I pay bills and make sure they have what they need without a job, the only option is to move where I know I have that support with my mom and other family who live a 1,000 miles away. Someone can watch them as I work and make this life better. I don’t have the funds to get there nor to secure a place of residence it is hard being a single poor mother in a below poverty town. As a mother and and now grandmother I will fight for a better life for them, maybe we can overcome this.

Help Army Vet beat hate crime against Mays family

<div>On Friday, April 1, unionized journalists from the Miami Herald, El Nuevo Herald and Bradenton Herald will refuse to work for one day to tell McClatchy, our parent company, that it is time for them to sign a fair union contract.

<div>After over two years of negotiations, the newspapers’ reporters, photographers, copy editors and page designers should be able to afford to live where they work. But McClatchy has refused to address pay disparities between English and Spanish-language journalists and continues to drastically underpay some of our colleagues who have worked at the Heralds for decades.

<div>The money collected will be used to cover any loss of salary that union members incur by participating in this walkout. Any additional money will be donated to the <a href="https://cpj.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Committee To Protect Journalist, </a>a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization.

The more we grow the grant's endowment, the more research that gets funded. Now, more than ever, we need to honor women like Dr. Blasey and others who study and educate people about violence against women, as well as women who bravely speak up about their own experiences to raise public awareness. <br /><br />One way to honor such women is to promote rising researchers themselves studying the problem of violence against women. If we raise at least $2500 in this round, we can fund a table at the gala and put at least an electronic announcement of the Christine Blasey Ford Grant and how it came to be in the gala's program (if we raise $5000, we may be in time to include the announcement in the print edition.)<br /><br />Small dollars add up, and donations in any amount are welcome. Below is the original "story" for the effort to raise money to endow an academic fund to honor Dr. Blasey Ford.<br /><br />*****<br /><br />On September 27th, 2018,  Dr. Christine Blasey Ford (who uses “Blasey” professionally) carried on her career as a scholar and educator, by providing lessons in civic responsibility, courage, and using one’s knowledge to speak truth to power. Since 1995, at least, when she published her dissertation, Dr. Blasey has been engaged in research and teaching. <br /><br />To honor her, particularly in her professional capacity, this is a campaign to raise funds to endow an academic chair (professorship) and/or scholarships, to be named so as to recognize Dr. Blasey.<br /><br />I do not know Dr. Blasey and I am doing this on my own initiative. I will attempt to confer with her about where to locate and how to title any endowment we raise. I began this campaign on September 27th,  so that all who  can donate or publicize could immediately  demonstrate the same commitment to education Dr. Blasey so clearly has and to show our appreciation for her commitment and integrity.<br /><br />I previously sponsored a capped fundraiser to assist Dr. Blasey with her security expenses. She has access to the funds and I understand she will draw upon them when she has the opportunity to do something other than hire security and prepare for hearings. Because I am not aware of her having need for further financial assistance at this time, I decided to fundraise to recognize her personal and professional accomplishments, to make sure she knows people see her as far more than "just" a victim or even survivor of sexual assault and as more than a witness in a Senate hearing. ...

Grow the Christine Blasey Ford Endowment

It is with profound sadness and a heavy heart that we inform you that our Brother, colleague, and friend, Fire Fighter Nathan Flynn, a member of the Howard County Professional Fire Fighters, Local 2000 of the International Association of Fire Fighters, died in the line of duty on Monday, July 23, 2018.<br /><br />Thank you to each and every one of you who have shared their condolences and offers of support. We are deeply humbled by the outpouring of love. Help Capital Gazette Journalists

For everyone that knows Leyanda, they know that she is the kindest and strongest woman with a huge heart. She has 3 beautiful children and is an avid member of the Quinnipiac University community, where she is loved by everyone. The students at QU look forward to seeing her every day!<br /><br />For those of you that don't know, in 2014 she was diagnosed with breast cancer, a battle she knew she had to fight. After strenuous rounds of chemotherapy and radiation, she became cancer free in 2016! Unfortunately, her battle was not over. Leyanda went in for a check-up a few weeks ago when they told her that her cancer has spread to her lymph nodes. She was diagnosed with Stage 4 breast cancer, which as many of you know, is the most aggressive. BUT, Leyanda is ready to fight again! <br /><br />With the rising cost of health insurance, treatment is going to be very expensive, which is why I am asking us to come together to help support Leyanda's journey to become a survivor again!
