<div>Around 9 PM, we pulled up to a self-service car wash. We stepped out to feed quarters into the machine. In the few seconds we were out of the car, Harper jumped on the armrest and accidentally <strong>locked the doors</strong> — with the engine running, our phones and keys still inside.

<div>We were locked out.<strong> Harper was inside the running car</strong>. And we had no way to get back in.
</div>

<div>Our only option was to break the window and with me being unemployed I had to think of a better option.

<div>Unfortunately, we were also locked out of our apartment since our keys were in the car.
</div>

<div>Maintenance was gone for the night. We remembered that our second-floor <strong>balcony door was unlocked</strong>, and with no other choice, I accepted a ride from a kind stranger back to our complex while my girlfriend stayed with the car.

<div>To get in, I had to scale a <strong>10-foot fence</strong> and jump toward the balcony. But as I reached for the railing, I slipped. My <strong>hand got caught between the bars</strong>, and the weight of my body<strong> crushed the bones in my index finger</strong>. I also dislocated my right shoulder as I hung there, in searing pain.

<div>I somehow managed to pull myself up and stumble into the apartment, barely conscious and in excruciating pain. Using my uninjured hand, I grabbed my iPad and <strong>used the Hyundai Blue app to unlock the car remotely</strong>, so my girlfriend could safely get to Harper and drive back to me.

<div>Then, I texted her from the Ipad to let her know what had happened.<strong> She immediately called 911.</strong>
</div>

</div>
<div><strong>The fire department arrived, got to me inside the apartment, and I was rushed by ambulance to the nearest hospital.</strong>

</div>
<div><strong> What This Has Cost Me</strong>

<div>This accident didn’t just leave me with crushed bones and a dislocated shoulder.
</div>
<div>It left me<strong> jobless, without health insurance,</strong> and u<strong>nable to support my children </strong>during a time they need me most.
