My oldest son, Lucca, is an incredible and resilient young man. He lives with autism, Tourette’s Syndrome, bipolar disorder, anxiety, sensory processing challenges, and features of schizophrenia—but those diagnoses don’t define him. At his core, Lucca is loving, affectionate, and full of light. He has a contagious laugh, a playful spirit, and a way of finding joy in the simplest moments—especially when he’s with the people who love him.

 For the past nine years, since the challenges of puberty began, Lucca has been in and out of group homes. While these settings provide structure and support, they have never truly felt like home. Too often, it feels like he’s surviving instead of living—his days shaped by systems rather than by what brings him comfort, connection, and happiness.

 So we are taking a leap of faith and following our hearts—we are bringing Lucca HOME. Lucca’s father, now retired, is ready to devote himself fully to caring for his son. Together, we want to create a safe, stable, and loving environment where Lucca can finally thrive—where his needs come first, where he is understood, and where his life is centered around dignity, comfort, and joy. This is more than a move—it’s the foundation for a completely new chapter in Lucca’s life.

<div>Due to the ongoing situation regarding Indianhead Biomass' biosolids operations causing the odor of human feces to impact the nearby resident's lives, welfare, and unreasonably interfere with the comfortable use and enjoyment of their lives and property, Sonya Fry has retained a lawyer, Mr. Ralph DeMeo with Adams &amp; Reese, LLP

<div>, to fight against this injustice. This is not a “If we get the funds, we will get a lawyer” situation - Sonya has already retained Mr. DeMeo and moving forward with giving us the only chance we have to fight against our situation through an Administrative Hearing.

<div>This should never have been a burden placed on any individual since it’s the facility who is at fault, but here we are, and we are requesting the community help in this fight for all of our lives, wellbeings, and property values by donating to this GoFundMe. Any donations to help alleviate the burden of the legal and other fees associated with this endeavor from being solely upon Sonya is appreciated beyond belief. The cost of this endeavor is three years of her salary as a paraprofessional at a St. Johns County Elementary School, and she is taking the money out of her retirement funds to fight this.

<div><strong>How did we come to this conclusion and what else have we tried first?</strong>

<div>We looked into the option of hiring a lawyer on a contingency (only gets paid if they win); however, since this is an Administrative Hearing, a contingency does not apply. Contingencies only apply when seeking monetary damages or personal injury. While people are free to pursue this route, it would result in paying the affected party, but not in the biosolid operations being stopped. We want this stopped for everyone. A class action lawsuit would seek monetary compensation for the damages that the odor caused, but it would not likely result in the revocation or non-renewal of Indianhead’s permit. The Administrative Hearing is where we have to fight the approval.

<div>In January 2025, we reached out for help from the St. John’s County Commissioners, Senator Leek, Representative Sapp, Representative Kim Kendall, Vice Mayor Barbara Blonder, FDEP Attorney General, EPA Headquarters, EPA Region 4, and Governor Ron DeSantis. We either heard nothing back from them or were told to handle the situation with the BOCC and the FDEP.
</div>

<div>On Jan. 21, 2025, our letter regarding our predicament was presented at the BOCC meeting in order to plead for aid from the county. After we met with various county officials March 13, 2025, we were informed that in 2023, there was a change in what the county could enforce of the Special Use Permit. Anything that had to do with biosolid operations became fully in the FDEP’s jurisdiction. Since odor is a byproduct of the biosolid processing, it therefore means the FDEP is the only entity who is allowed to monitor it or take action regarding it.
</div>

</div>
<div>The FDEP has told those of us pursuing this matter many things. Some examples are: “We don’t monitor odors”, “Odor is subjective”, “Well, it’s normal for a facility like this to have some odor,” etc. Indianhead’s permit from the FDEP states that no odor may affect the nearby communities. Odor is defined in Section 62 regarding biosolids as not being allowed to be objectionable. A three mile radius around a facility is not just ‘some’ odor.

</div>
<div>In March 2023, the FDEP and Indianhead came together to create an Odor Management Plan where Indianhead vowed to find a resolution if the odor was affecting the nearby communities. However, from March 2023 to Oct 2024, the FDEP has noted that no actions have been taken to address the odor problem. From Oct 2024 - March 2025, there have been no updates regarding any odor solutions.
</div>

</div>
<div>In fact, the FDEP just released the following as part of Indianhead’s permit renewal process: “Based upon the application and supplemental information, the Department has determined that the Applicant [Indianhead] has provided reasonable assurance that the above described wastewater project complies with the applicable provisions of Chapter 403, F.S., and Title 62 of the F.A.C.” (See the website for more details on Title 62 and its many clauses about odor violations.) And in the new permit, they state that Indianhead shall “continue to follow” the Odor Management Plan. This is after having documented that Indianhead has never followed the Odor Management Plan.
</div>

<div>With the FDEP seemingly content to allow Indianhead to continue as they are and believing that the odor isn’t enough of a problem to even enforce their own rules or the plans they’ve made, the county having their hands tied, and our voices being drowned out: we have come to the conclusion that hiring a lawyer is the only chance we have.
</div>

</div>
<div>Mr. DeMeo has an extensive background in Environmental Law, Government Enforcement and Investigations, and various other areas of practice. He was a former Chair and Executive Council Member for The Florida Bar Environmental and Land Use Law Section (ELULS), listed in Best Lawyers in America® in Environmental Law (2006 – 2022), listed in Who’s Who in Florida Environmental Law (2010 – 2022) and National Leader – Florida Environment (2020), and he has recently been selected to Lexology Index: Environment &amp; Climate Change 2025 which is an in-depth guide into the leading environmental lawyers around the world. He also represented a similar case in Putnam County regarding a wastewater facility and was able to have the permit blocked.

<div>We believe that Mr. DeMeo, and his expertise, is our only fighting chance to have our situation taken seriously and our only fighting chance in preventing Indianhead from continuing to impact our lives negatively until we either move out or resign ourselves to our fecal-mattered fate.

Honoring Joseph A Loving Father & Veteran

Our family is living through a tragedy that no one should ever experience. Samuel Alston was brutally murdered in our home in front of our two toddlers, ages 2 and 3. In an instant, our lives were forever changed.
 <br />Samuel was more than a husband and father. He was a loving son, brother, and a respected community leader who touched so many lives. To our children, he was their best friend and the person who made them feel safe in this world.
<br /><br />Because of the trauma that happened in our home, we are unable to return there. The place that once gave our children safety and stability is now filled with painful memories. Along with losing Samuel, we also lost the only home our children have ever known.
<br /><br />Our two youngest children are struggling deeply after witnessing this horrific event. They are experiencing night terrors, waking up screaming for their dad and begging for the man not to hurt them. <div>On Monday morning, August 4th, a beloved member of our community was detained by <strong>ICE</strong> and is at risk of being <strong>DEPORTED</strong>. Many of you know Ester Soliman or one of her three adult children (Sanjee, Sam and Sandra). All three children grew up in Lancaster, and graduated from McCaskey High. Their mother, Ester, is well-known and active in our community!

<div>The Soliman family came here legally 25 years ago. Tragically, Ester's husband died, leaving the whole family in limbo. Ester was able to start her green card application process last year, when her youngest daughter, who is a US citizen, turned 21 became eligible to sponsor her. They have been working through the long and tedious process when Ester received a notification from ICE to appear and register for an "Alternatives to Detention" program on August 4. When she showed up for this meeting in good faith, she was detained and immediately transferred to a detention facility in Clinton County, more than two hours away. <strong>She could be deported within weeks. </strong>

<div>This is a devastating situation on many levels, and the family needs all the support and assistance we can muster as they continue to navigate this heartbreaking and complex situation. The Soliman family are going to be working with a specialized immigration attorney to fight for Ester’s freedom.

There are only a few facilities, or sober living homes, in the state of Wisconsin that allow women to have their children live or stay on site with them.

On the night of Friday, March 21, 2025, this cherished family was involved in a devastating boating accident on St. John’s River, which claimed their lives far too soon.

Cristian was a devoted father, and his children, Victoria and Juan Camilo, were young souls full of promise and love. Nubia Romero, Cristian’s mother, had traveled from Colombia to visit her family and was tragically taken from them in this unexpected accident. This profound loss has left Paula Valderrama, Cristian’s wife and the mother of Victoria and Juan Camilo, facing unimaginable grief as she navigates the heartbreaking loss of her beloved family members.

In this incredibly difficult time, we are reaching out to the community to provide financial support for Paula and the family as they cope with these devastating losses. <div>Brother Frank Albrecht, pictured here with his walker, is an incredibly dynamic and inspiring person who has dedicated his life to serving others (if you've met him, you know that's how he greets everyone!). He is also my father. Frank was diagnosed with ALS (<a href="https://www.als.org/understanding-als/what-is-als" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">click here to learn more about ALS</a>) in June 2023, and has just subsequently become wheelchair dependent in November 2023. His first goal is to continue supporting students as a teacher at Lancaster city’s McCaskey high school through the end of the year, and his second is a summer road trip to see family one final time after the school year is finished next summer.

<div>Having supported his sister after her diagnosis of ALS in 2016, we can anticipate what is to come. We recognize that completing these goals while being in a wheelchair in an environment that is not accessible is a monumental task. We also recognize that out-of-pocket costs for individuals with ALS can easily surpass $250,000. With this fundraiser, we would like to provide an avenue for people who are able and interested in supporting Brother Frank, in small or large ways financially, as he continues to serve his community with the remaining time that he has.

<div>We've alluded to the fact that Brother Frank has dedicated his life to serving others. Here is a brief description of the way he has served others over the years:

<div>"In 1988 I noticed students congregating on our street corner of S. Ann and Dauphin (where we lived) and after the off-duty police officers captured a bunch of them one night for violence and gang involvement, I went down to the corner and asked them if they would like to get off the asphalt and into the mountains for a weekend camping. They said, “Yes!” So for the next 8 years we went on yearly trips. I now see these men in the community, and many of them have had students here at McCaskey, the high school where I teach, that they want me to look out for, and one of them is now my mailman! When I walk down the street, I often recognize my former and current students. They shout 'Brother Albrecht!' across the street and we catch up.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>In 1990 I also started a mediation program at McCaskey after a student was paralyzed by a being knifed over spilled soup. To date, I have trained 32 mediators every year for 25 years (except for the years I was in Colombia). They perform 350 peer mediations a year; we mediate between students, students and teachers, and teacher, administrators—everyone! My official role is that of student facilitator and it has been my honor to support generations of McCaskey students and Lancaster residents in this way for decades.
</div>

<div>I support my students inside and outside of the classroom. For decades, I have stood in front of the school and greeted hundreds of students, by name, every morning. Now, in my my wheelchair, I sit inside the high school lobby and continue to greet students on the daily. Here I am tossing my hat after McCaskey scores a touchdown during possibly my last homecoming game. I go to every single McCaskey game (football, basketball, powderpuff games) that I can, and I will continue to do so!

<div>During the first year of the pandemic, I was given a list of 25 students that would not graduate unless they finished a large number of online courses. I visited every student nearly every day, giving 45 minute pep talks from the sidewalk and guess what? All 25 seniors graduated on time!

<div>Every morning, I used to clean the streets in my neighborhood in an activity I call "plogging" (picking up trash while jogging). I stopped plogging in July because of my condition, and I'm sad to say, the streets have accumulated more trash than I have seen before.
</div>

<div>I am married to the wonderful Elizabeth Soto who has been a phenomenal lifetime companion. We were blessed with 2 daughters, Yentli Soto Albrecht and Sara Albrecht Soto. In addition to serving our community in Lancaster, we supported church and housing communities in Armenia and Bogotá, Colombia for 7 years while they were children. We have continued to support South American families financially and spiritually for decades. While in Colombia, I learned Spanish which I have used to communicate with my Puerto Rican in-laws and to record a weekly Spanish radio show on how to raise families in a non-violent, loving manner.

<div>I retired this year from being a youth leader at church, after 42 years of being an advisor. I have loved this responsibility because I get to work closely with families of youth who are struggling, and help encourage those who are doing well to strive even higher! I have performed many home visits every year during my career as a supporter of students—when there is a need, I am there.

<div>I can hardly believe I am telling people that this is my last year teaching! In the picture below, the School District of Lancaster recognized me for my years of service this August. Since I was diagnosed with ALS this summer, I do believe this is a sign that I need to be retiring at the end of this school year. I often said, “I want to work until I drop over!” This actually could happen, although I truly hope it does not! I will go as long as I can, as long as I am still effective in helping students make changes to improve the quality of their lives. As long as I can, I will support families in need at home and abroad. As long as I can, I will support members of my community that have given so much to me my entire life."

<div>ALS is a very expensive disease, in ways both figurative and literal. Because of its progressive nature, we are constantly readjusting our reality to new norms. Brother Frank has already used all his savings in making the first floor accommodations for his condition. We have reached out for donated equipment and been blessed with an electric wheelchair, and after an expensive deductible, the rest of his four ALS medications are covered for the remainder of the year. Our community even built us a ramp so I can get into our home, as seen below! Still, the demands are on-going now that he cannot stand or walk—how will we transport him between seats, prevent bed sores, make environments wheelchair accessible, and help him fulfill his final goals of life of finishing the school year and visiting his family?

<div>The ultimate goal is that Brother Frank live life to the fullest without prohibitive barriers. His ALS is quickly limiting him and his ability to help others—more than he (and we) alone can overcome. My family would welcome support in myriad ways, from meals, to helping Frank get around, driving on the summer 2024 road trip (June 10-July 13), accessible RV or wheelchair van loans, to helping with household activities. If you are willing and able to give financially, your contribution would go directly to the following items and breakdowns. Any specialized items that we acquire, we will donate forward to other individuals with ALS/neurodegenerative disease when Frank no longer needs them.

<div><strong><em>Medical/mobility: 80%</em></strong>
</div>
<div>●	A moveable mattress that allows my father to get out of bed and control his positioning ($2,800).
</div>
<div>●	An electronic Hoyer Lift (insurance only pays for a mechanical one; $2,500).
</div>
<div>●	Making a bathroom wheelchair accessible ($8,000—this is the only item already paid for).
</div>
<div>●	A wheelchair van ($20-40,000); we would very strongly prefer to borrow one instead and welcome any assistance or insight in acquiring one.
</div>
<div>●	And ICU bed that would autorotate Frank and prevent bed sores ($5,000 on eBay).
</div>
<div>●	Portable wheelchair ramps ($400).
</div>
<div>●	A ROHO air wheelchair seat to prevent sores since he is sitting for over 16 hours a day ($400).
</div>
<div>●	Home care ($30 per hour for as many hours per day/week/month/year we can muster). Many individuals with ALS rely on their partners to care for them when they can no longer care for themselves. However, my mom is unable to lift him, which is essential to support activities for daily living. 24/7 care would cost $18,000 per month; we will provide as much as we possibly can in the year(s) to come.

<div>●	A one-week beach wheelchair rental while we are in Puerto Rico for the holidays with family ($400).

<div>●	A road trip to visit friends and family June-July 2024 (up to $15,000 for 5-7 people); we could also use drivers, an ADA compliant RV, and helping hands if anyone wants to join for part of it.

<div>*Update:  Cisco is out of surgery, but not out of the woods yet. while removing his blocked urethra, they found evidence that it had ruptured and partially healed sometime prior to arriving at our sanctuary.  That partial healing led to an abscess that was draining into his abdomen. Luckily veterinarians at UF removed the necrotic tissue and are hoping it will heal. Because of the rupture to his urethra the surgery had to change partway through.  They had to redirect his urine because his urethra was no longer able to withstand the pressure.  He will have a port from his bladder, allowing him to urinate when needed. The veterinarians assured me he can still have a wonderful, normal goat life, where he’s able to climb and jump and run. The only caveat would be that he is prone to more bladder infections. (which we can  keep a close eye on here at the sanctuary).  The abscess will require lots of time to heal, and since his urine had to be rerouted, his recovery will be a little slower than normal.  The vets at UF are still very hopeful he will have a good recovery. He has to stay at the hospital for a couple extra days due to this more in-depth procedure but he’s getting great care from great veterinarians.

<div>Here at the sanctuary one of our staff is working hard and fast to build Cisco his own separate temporary enclosure that will meet his physical and medical needs until his recovery.

<div>From all of us here at Noah’s Ark Sanctuary in Hastings, Florida; we are in desperate need of funding for an emergency surgery for an animal case.
</div>

<div>We have a very young and adorable, nine month old, mini Nigerian dwarf goat that came into our possession recently. He began exhibiting signs of possible illness, and I have worked tirelessly to try and find help for him. From what several veterinarians have determined, he has a potential urethral blockage (think large kidney stone). Four goats, if not removed, this is a certain painful death sentence. My only options are emergency surgery, or euthanasia.

<div>Within the past week we paid over $5000 for emergency care for one of our other animals and our funds are desperately low. For the first time ever, we need to ask for help from the community to help the sweet boy.
</div>

<div>Our sanctuary takes in rescued and abandon animals from all over our community and neighboring communities. We receive no state funding and rely on donations (or my paycheck) to keep our facility going. We have always found a way, but we are so short on funds that we can’t cover this one on ourown and need help.

Cisco the baby goat needs surgery

<span style="color:#333333;">On June 19th, 2021, Gyovanny Arzuaga and Yasmin Perez were celebrating at the Puerto Rican Day Parade in Humboldt Park when they were both tragically shot. Gyo unfortunately passed away after arriving to the hospital and Yasmin is in critical condition after sustaining a gunshot wound to the neck. Please keep them, their children, and their families in your thoughts and prayers during this time. This fundraiser is to cover funeral service costs for Gyo’s family and medical bills for Yasmin’s family. <br /><br />My name is Isaly Schaffner and Yasmin was my cousin and Godsister. <br /></span>
