<div>Less than a month to go before A Python on the Prom unveils Terry’s statue on the beach in his home town of Colwyn Bay.  Why not join us on Saturday 25th April from 12 - 4pm for an afternoon of Pythonesque silliness. 
</div>
<div>We are delighted to announce that Michael Palin and Terry Gilliam will be joining us for the day and will be on hand to conduct a suitably anarchic unveiling of the statue. The photo above shows Michael and Terry with Nick Elphick, Sculptor of the statue. 
</div>
<div>The event kicks off at midday, with marauding Vikings, Knights and their coconut-clopping Squires, a recreation of the ‘Spam Cafe’ set, and even a ‘Silly Olympics’ for fans to compete in. Visitors are encouraged to dress as anything Terry or Python, with official merch, donated by Monty Python themselves, for the most imaginative costumes.

<div>Terry Jones’ statue in north Wales, celebrating him as the Nude Organist from Monty Python’s Flying Circus, will be unveiled on 25th April 2026 by his family and friends from the comedy world.
</div>
<div>Michael Palin, Terry’s lifelong friend, remarked: “Terry always insisted on doing his own stunts, and I think that sitting stark naked (apart from a tie) on Colwyn Bay promenade, in all weathers, is the ultimate tribute to the lengths he was always prepared to go to for comedy. I hope his wonderfully generous bottom will become an emblem of the town he loved so much.”

<div>The statue presents Terry as the organist, nude apart from a flapping tie and ‘exploded’ hair, grinning as he strikes the classic pose. In sculpting the organ, Nick Elphick takes artistic license and morphs the instrument with Terry’s writing desk, bringing to life aspects of his multi-faceted career to reflect the man as a whole, beyond Python.

<div>Throughout the next few months, Nick will oversee the casting process; bringing everything together, to fully immortalize him in bronze.
</div>
<div>Funded entirely by donations, the statue will be gifted to Conwy County Borough Council. The team behind the campaign, Terry’s family and the Conwy Arts Trust, plan to make the unveiling of the statue a big community event, to which you are all invited to join us on Saturday, 25th April next year!

<div>The campaign is being run by the Conwy Arts Trust (CAT), in partnership with Terry’s family. The Trust, which was founded in 2013, believes in the power of the arts to change lives. Its mission is to promote, maintain and advance education and an appreciation of the arts across the county borough of Conwy. The Trust supports Theatr Colwyn and Oriel Colwyn in Colwyn Bay and runs a range of arts projects across the county in conjunction with the Conwy County Borough Council culture service, Venue Cymru and a number of other organisations. CAT projects have a particular focus on wellbeing initiatives and on supporting young people.

<div>The National Brain Appeal funds a pioneering service called Rare Dementia Support, and they helped Terry and his family through his dementia diagnosis and progression. Around 150,000 people in the UK are affected by rare forms of dementia that can strike at a young age, may be directly inherited, and often affect skills other than memory, such as vision, language, behaviour and movement. With support groups all around the UK and more than 7,000 members, Rare Dementia Support is a lifeline for those affected, and their families - empowering, guiding and informing them, as well as providing opportunities to meet other people living with similar conditions. The charity has also funded the world’s first Rare Dementia Support.

<div>‘The Life of Terry’ a fascinating exhibition of Terry’s personal archives, is now open at Oriel Colwyn gallery, Colwyn Bay. Terry’s family and Monty Python have lent over 100 photos and other items to Curator Paul Sampson, with the exhibition including rarely seen pages of Terry’s original notebooks, including alternative lyrics to Always Look on the Bright Side of Life, his own hand drawn storyboards for Monty Python’s 1981’ film The Meaning of Life, as well as original posters and other memorabilia. <div><strong>A bit about Terry and his love of Colwyn Bay</strong>
</div>
<div>Terry needs no introduction…but just in case - he was the Welsh one in Monty Python, that comedy collective who were famous for having their film, Life of Brian, banned in Aberystwyth. Born in Colwyn Bay, Terry was a proud Welshman, forever proclaiming his Welshness in an accent straight out of Surrey. The idea for a statue came from Terry’s friends at Theatr Colwyn. Terry was their very first Patron and he’d often come to Colwyn Bay for screenings or fundraising events. After his death due to dementia in January 2020, Theatr Colwyn contacted Sally and Bill, Terry’s children, and asked if they thought a statue of Terry might be a good idea. They both thought it would be wonderful and so this campaign was born.

<div><strong>About the statue</strong>
</div>
<div>Terry would’ve been the first to think a statue of himself was a silly notion, but secretly he would’ve been immensely proud that his hometown truly accepts him as a Welshman. The plan is for a life-size statue to sit on the Promenade, not on a plinth, but on the ground, amongst the beach goers, who can shake his hand or put an arm round him for a chat and a photo. Terry was always an approachable, affable man, so we think he would be happiest next to his beloved beach, back once again in his home town.

<div>Just 5 miles up the coast from Colwyn Bay, local artist Nick Elphick will bring Terry’s likeness to life. Nick is a passionate visionary who’s spent the better part of his career studying the human form. He’s gained countless headlines, and global recognition, for his beautifully crafted bronzes. Much like Terry, Nick boldly takes on the traditionalist and sticks two fingers up! We think, to best reflect a life spent in silliness, it would be fitting for Terry to be represented in character. We’ll be working with Nick to design something really special that celebrates Terry’s life in comedy.

As well as supporting Theatr Colwyn and other arts venues the Trust also runs a range of arts projects, including educational workshops and outreach projects - as well as working with partner organisations supporting arts projects across Conwy county. They believe in the power of the arts to change lives.

<div>It is our hope that this statue will bring people who loved Terry from around the world to visit Colwyn Bay; and that when they come and maybe take a cheeky photo with him, they also make a donation. The statue will feature a QR code so any visitor can use their phone to easily make a donation. All donations will go to support the arts in North Wales through the Conwy Arts Trust, as well as supporting research and care for those with dementia through the National Brain Appeal, they fund the Rare Dementia Support Service and the world's first Rare Dementia Support Centre.

<div>We lost Terry to dementia in 2020 and it is our sincere hope that through this campaign we can help raise awareness of dementia and support research into finding a cure.

<div>Nothing about how the Kyiv Independent started was normal. When you imagine yourself launching a new venture, you must imagine months of careful planning, pitching to investors, putting together a team, and picking out a location for an office.

<div>Well, we had four days. You read that right.
</div>

<div>Three years ago, we were fired from a newspaper for standing up to censorship attempts. It was gutting. We were a bunch of young journalists, standing up against a rich owner who thought that he showed us how the world runs — and who runs it.

Miracle's Mission are a non-profit charity dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating sick, injured and disabled animals form around the world. Working predominantly in the UK, Borneo &amp; Egypt; Miracle’s Mission is ever expanding to help animals in need wherever they can.<br /><br />Miracle's Mission offer a full rehabilitation programme right through from assessment to surgery to rehabilitation, recovery and re-homing. This is again why education is so important, so that people become open to adopting disabled dogs.<br /><br />Miracle’s Mission was founded by Victoria Bryceson in 2015, after a trip to Borneo made her aware of the severity of the street dog population. Working with animal shelters over there, it became apparent that whilst these shelters were caring for the animals, the root cause was yet to be addressed. Allowing un-neutered cats and dogs to roam the streets meant that puppies and kittens were being born onto the streets at an alarming rate, with a grim life ahead of them. Therefore, Miracle’s Mission came into existence with the main aim to neuter stray animals on the streets of Borneo and decrease the population of dogs and cats suffering.<br /><br />Miracle’s Story<br /><br />Miracle is the namesake of the charity, and her story is similar to many others around the world. However, not all of these animals end up being as lucky as she was and finding a loving home where she is spoilt rotten!<br /><br />Miracle was rescued from the streets of Borneo at 1 week old before her tiny eyes were even open. She was found with her siblings in a very remote area, where they were likely abandoned and were very unwell. The puppies were full of maggots, with ringworm and blood parasites. Unfortunately, Miracle’s siblings did not make it.<br /><br />Miracle was cared for by Victoria and she had a very long road of recovery ahead of her. She had several injuries and was very weak, but she made a miraculous recovery and is now strong, happy and healthy living with her adopted sisters Star and Tess, who were also rescued from Borneo. Her aim is to aid in saving many more animals in need around the world.<br /><br />Crediting Ella with all she now knows Victoria said: “It took about three months to get Ella back from Egypt and it was the hardest three months of my life.<br /><br />“I spent the time converting my garage and garden to make them safe for her. As soon as she arrived, and I got her into some wheels she was a different dog. She inspired me to do more. Every vet said with her injuries she should be put to sleep but once they met her, they changed their minds.”<br /><br />“When she first got into her wheels she just took off, she ran and ran with no hesitation it was like she got her life back.”<br /><br />Hoping to encourage people to adopt pets with special needs the charity boss said: “People think it would be too difficult to look after a dog with wheels, but they adapt really well. If you have a house with stairs, they live downstairs or you can take them upstairs and put a baby gate at the top. It really is not difficult. They tend to connect with you more.”<br /><br />Miracle’s Mission were proud to be recently named 2021 Rescue of the Year by Walkin’ Pets who said “the rescue focuses on the hardest to adopt pets, believing that “adopting a special needs pet will change your life, your world, your outlook, your priorities and all for the better.”<br /><br />The charity is currently fundraising to build the FIRST centre in the UK DEDICATED to treating injured and disabled animals.<br /><br /> <br />Please help them to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome many more animals in need by donating any amount, large or small.

Help  Miracle's Mission Enable Disabled Animals

<p>I’m Activities Co-ordinator at Sydmar Lodge Care Home where the Residents have been in Lockdown for 4 months and it’s been my job and privilege to keep them entertained during the COVID crisis with no outside entertainers or family. 
</p>

<p>As this situation is on-going it could be months before the situation changes for them and the need to keep them happy entertained and full of spirit has never been more crucial. 
</p>

<p>Elderly people will remain in lockdown for a long time, and I want to make their time as happy and full of enjoyment and interest as possible.

<p>Further to the overwhelming response, I have spoken with the Residents involved with this project and we would like the funds raised to go to charity.<br />We have decided this will be split between DementiaFriends.org.uk, Alzheimers.org.uk and AgeUK.org.uk.

<p>Dementia Friends UK provides information sessions to learn more about what it is like to live with dementia and turn that understanding into action.<br /><br />Alzheimer’s Society is the UK’s leading dementia charity. They campaign for change, fund research to find a cure and support people living with dementia today.<br /><br />Age UK is the UK's leading charity dedicated to helping everyone make the most of later life. They provide companionship, advice and support for older people who need it most.

The Show Must Go On

Under Article 50, by law, the United Kingdom will formally leave the European Union at 11pm GMT on Friday 31 January. This means that those who wish to celebrate this historic moment will need to look to a clock to mark the time (exactly as on New Year's Eve). The natural choice for this would be Big Ben but because it is currently undergoing refurbishment, special measures would have to be put in place, which could cost up to £500,000. The Big Ben must bong for Brexit campaign

Last night, investigative journalist Lyra McKee was shot dead in a terrorist incident on the streets of Derry. A gunman shot her in the head as she attempted to cover riots on the Creggan area of the city. <br /><br />I had the pleasure to know Lyra, who was one of the nicest, smartest nad most decent people I have ever met. Lyra was part of a new generation of Northern Irish journalists (and young people) who had moved past sectarian identities and wanted to build a more progressive, more peaceful Northern Ireland. Lyra was a powerful advocate for LGBTi rights, civil liberties and human rights. <br /><br />Lyra was also an incredible investigative journalist. She was in Forbes 30 Under 30 List, had a growing international reputation and was working on her second book. <br /><br />I had the pleasure to get to know Lyra through her working on the grassroots campaign to reform the law of libel in Northern Ireland. Lyra was a passionate defender of press freedom and exposing the truth.<br /><br />You don't expect journalists to be killed anywhere. For it to happen to a friend, in a (troubled) democracy, is just unbelievable. I feel so sad for Lyra's family. In the final days of January 2019, a tragic fire occurred in Nick Civitello's apartment while he was at work that gutted his room and left him without a home. He lost everything and was left with only the clothes on his back. Although Nick has a place to stay while he is figuring out his next move, being completely uprooted in one of the coldest winter on record is one of the cruelest fates imaginable to such a stand-up human being. Nick is one of the most selfless and incredible people I know and has always given the most of himself while asking nothing in return. <strong>Playing In The Key Of Love</strong><br /><br />Mike Garson is our friend. He is an amazing pianist and composer who has had an enormous impact on jazz, classical and rock music along with being a lifelong humanitarian who has helped countless people, performers and charity organizations around the world at the drop of a hat with the expectation of nothing in return. Mike’s musical career includes a decades long collaboration with David Bowie on more than 1,000 live performances and dozens of blockbuster albums along with albums and performances with greats like Nine Inch Nails, The Smashing Pumpkins and so many more. Mike has been the soundtrack to so many of our lives and it’s time for us to give back.<br /><br />Mike’s home and studio have tragically burned to the ground - a place of magic where he composed and played on thousands of pieces of music, taught and consoled musicians and friends from around the world, and shared music and stories about his time with David Bowie to fans after Bowie’s passing. Mike’s pianos, keyboards, recording equipment, historical mementos, photographs and much more were lost to the tragic fires in Southern California on November 9. We must help him rebuild his studio, get back on the piano and continue to spread his gift to us all once more.<br /><br />We’ve seen Mike receiving thousand of communications, each sincere and heartwarming with one body of thought asking if there’s anything they can do to help.
