Ahmed's Hope: Aiding a New Start in Egypt

<p>Update: Kim has recently been diagnosed with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD), a rare, devastating, and rapidly progressive brain disease. CJD affects approximately one person per million each year and causes a rapid decline in brain function.
</p><br />
<p>This disease can lead to severe confusion, memory loss, changes in behavior and personality, difficulty walking and maintaining balance, vision problems, and the loss of the ability to perform everyday tasks independently. Unfortunately, there is currently no cure or effective treatment for CJD, and the disease progresses very quickly.
</p><br />
<p>As Kim's condition advances, our family is focused on ensuring she receives the comfort, care, and support she needs while cherishing every precious moment together. The emotional and financial burden of this diagnosis is overwhelming, and we are asking for help to assist with medical expenses, caregiving needs, hospice care, and allowing our family to spend as much meaningful time with Kim as possible.

<p>6/28:Our family is walking through an incredibly difficult and uncertain time, and we’re asking for help. Our mom, Kim Wilson, is currently receiving care at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center as doctors work to determine what is causing her sudden and serious health decline. She has been experiencing ataxia, significant vision issues, dizziness, confusion, and severe imbalance, making even simple daily tasks extremely difficult. Watching someone you love struggle with symptoms that affect their ability to walk, see clearly, and think clearly is heartbreaking. Right now, we are facing more questions than answers, and the uncertainty has been overwhelming.

<p>As we focus on getting Kim the care she needs, the financial burden continues to grow. Between hospital stays, testing, specialist visits, medical bills, transportation, hotel stays, and time away from work to provide care, the expenses are adding up quickly. <div>The International Solidarity Movement (ISM) is a Palestinian-led movement committed to resisting the long-entrenched and systematic oppression and dispossession of the Palestinian population, using non-violent, direct-action methods and principles. Founded in August 2001, ISM aims to support and strengthen the Palestinian popular resistance by working immediately alongside Palestinians in olive groves, on school runs, at demonstrations, within villages being attacked, by houses being demolished or where Palestinians are subject to consistent harassment or attacks from soldiers and settlers as well as numerous other situations.

DOCUMENTATION: documenting and reporting to local and international media about the daily life under apartheid and countless human rights and international law violations by the Israeli military and settlers. The need for documentation is not just to show that there are illegal and unjust actions going on, but also to provide a real means of evidence for accountability to the police and courts, case by case. ISMers are also committed to sharing their experiences when they return to their home countries, through interviews and talks.

<div>Since Israel began its current onslaught on Gaza in October 2023, occupation forces have been taking advantage of the state of emergency to escalate their violence and displacement of Palestinians in the West Bank. Soldiers and settlers have systematically bulldozed homes, carried out night raids, attacked and killed Palestinians across the region.

<div>There is almost no international media coverage on the ground in the West Bank because of the situation in Gaza, and many human rights organisations have had to leave the area. ISM activists on the ground continue their vital work in solidarity with Palestinians, reporting their eyewitness accounts of the daily atrocities committed by Israeli soldiers and settlers, amplifying the voices of Palestinians and answering local Palestinian-led calls to action.

<div>As a resident of Masafer Yatta told an ISM volunteer, “What is happening is unlike anything before; nobody can predict what tomorrow may bring. It begs the question: How much longer must Palestinians endure before the world takes notice and acts?”

Support Tad's Family Rebuild After Tragedy

Virginia still relies heavily on a system of money bail. Because bail amounts are often out of reach, many people who are arrested but not convicted of a crime are either forced to go through for-profit bail bondsmen (a practice that is illegal in almost every other country) or sit in jail as they await trial. <br /><br />A bail fund does not solve the deep-rooted problems of the criminal legal system, but it can help to ensure that those who have not been convicted of a crime do not sit in jail for months as they await trial simply because they lack the resources needed to post bail. <br /><br />Because there is currently no revolving criminal bail fund in the area, we are setting one up to help those being held in the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail, the Middle River Regional Jail, the Central Virginia Regional Jail, as well as those facing charges in Nelson County, Staunton City, and the greater Shenandoah Valley. Before we can begin to take tax-deductible charitable donations, we need to file as a Virginia non-stock corporation and as a non-profit with the IRS. These filings will cost $775 in total. Any money we raise above this amount will go directly to bailing people out of Virginia jails. The doctor in Guam is now urgently insisting that Cohen visits the Children’s Hospital in Los Angeles for further evaluation and treatment.

<div>Cohen Reyes, currently living in Guam, is our youngest and sweet little nephew that brings so much love and joy to our family. The sudden and unexpected news of this discovery has left us all devastated. Even with all of our supports, Cohen’s parents are struggling to cover not only the medical bills but also the traveling cost of flying their little one to LA for his much needed treatment.

Support the Medical Emergency for Cohen Reyes

This past Saturday June 22nd, my sister Jada Louis passed away. It was unexpected and, honestly, I'm still shaking in disbelief even as I type this out. At only 24, everyone thought she had more time. She was recently hospitalized for diabetic ketoacidosis but was released after 10 days with her blood sugars stabilized and a plan of care in action. I learned that she hadn't been able to afford her insulin, so she hadn't been taking it for a few weeks prior to the hospital stay. Having no insurance , she felt she didn't have any other choice. Money was a thing we would address later, we were just happy she made it through such a physically and mentally taxing ordeal. She was finally home and we thought she was doing better.  But my sister would die a little over a week after finally being back home. Our family has been shaken to its very core by her passing. We are doing our best to stay strong long enough to plan her funeral, but we could use all the help we can get. Please help us give my sister a burial worthy of how special she was to all of us.

I will be taking these funds and giving them to my grandmother, who is helping to coordinate the funeral.
