 Through absolutely no doing of her own, LaShawna’s life was turned upside down when a suspect ran into her home, leading to a police standoff. What had been a peaceful home for LaShawna and her family was severely damaged during the incident. Walls were torn apart, windows were busted, and the damage left the home uninhabitable.

 In a matter of moments, she lost nearly everything she had worked so hard to rebuild her home, clothing, beds, couches, furniture, and many of the basic necessities a family needs just to live day to day.

 What makes this situation even more heartbreaking is everything LaShawna has already endured. Last year, she suffered the unimaginable loss of her daughter in the Missouri River. She tragically drowned. During that devastating time, she also lost her previous home. Since then, she has worked hard to put the pieces of her life back together, find stability, and create a home again for her family.

<div>On May 22, 2025, at just 19 years old, Janidi Ibrahim was shot and killed by a Douglas County Sheriff’s Deputy while seated in a parked car.

<div>He had just graduated high school one week prior. He was a husband, a father to an 11-month-old baby, a beloved son, and a brother. He leaves behind his young wife, who described him with tears in her eyes as “the love of my life.”

<div>According to the Sheriff’s own press release, Janidi was seated inside the vehicle when the deputy approached and made contact he did not flee, he was not armed, and yet he was fatally shot.

<div>His mother, Aunty Halima, was asleep at home after working a night shift having just shared that shift with her son. She asked him to take the trash out before going to bed. That was the last thing she would ever ask of him. She was not even woken as her son lay dying. She found out hours later.

<div>My cousin Brandon Bohn was a passenger in a serious off roading vehicle accident. He was taken to the MACC when they rushed him to ECMC Tuesday night. He went down for surgery on Wednesday morning and is still admitted at ECMC. He broke his clavicle, has broken ribs, a punctured lung and fracture in his neck.

<div>To start, she lost her caregiving job of 13 years last year due to her employer’s financial struggles, and has been waiting for disability approval for over 2 years. Jenn is living on extremely low income during this wait. Jenn has been without a vehicle for a year and a half. She had a car that her ex was supposed to fix during their marriage and they never did, and the repairs needed eventually made the car undriveable, unsafe, and more than the car was worth. Although Chicago has public transit, her health issues create significant barriers. As many of you know, Jenn walks with a cane, and has severe heat intolerance from MS. When it’s warm, many bus stops do not have shade, and she is forced to wait in the hot sun for up to an hour at times.

<div>Winter is coming and will present another set of obstacles generally but also aggravating MS issues.

<div>To make matters immensely worse, Jenn’s parenting time, world, have been flipped upside

<div>Her parenting time was cut back significantly, and she has completely lost child support for the forseeable couple of years. This was due to a court decision based on unknown factors, presumed fraud, her co-sleeping with her child, (which is absolutely healthy and normal,) and most disappointingly on her continuing support of her nonbinary child’s gender expression. This is something her ex takes extreme issue with, even though the child’s physicians and therapist have deemed it a nonissue. This was initiated maliciously by

<div>her ex husband, out of spite. He lives an hour away in the suburbs.

<div>The weekday time that Jenn has with her child involves 5.5 hours total of public transit time or

<div>more, walking amounts of time/distance that stretch beyond her capability and 5 hours of time at the library, park, or restaurants/shops to kill time, because she cannot simply take her child to her house and bring her back. There are also the added expenses of sometimes eating out or buying convenience items at the grocery store since travel time and circumstances don’t allow for bringing food easily, as well as rideshare charges to cover distances she simply cannot manage.

<div>How has she been doing this so far? Painstakingly, and with the great help of amazing friends. She has had an amazing person who has driven her back and forth at times, and others that have been so gracious as to lend their minivan for the day. The days she has to take public transit begin around 11:30am and she doesn’t often get home before 10pm.

<div>This has not only left her in physical pain and exhaustion, it’s exhausting what little finances she

<div>has, and severely limits the hours in a week that she can work or participate in the self care she needs to sustain her self and her illness. She is currently waiting on a disability hearing, which has been over a 2 year wait.

<div>On Thursday, April 13, 2023, my nephew Ralph P Yarl was on his way to pick up his twin younger brothers from their friend's house a few blocks away from his house. He didn't have his phone. He mistakenly went to the wrong house, one block away from the house where his siblings were. He pulled into the driveway and rang the doorbell. The man in the home opened the door, looked my nephew in the eye, and shot him in the head. My nephew fell to the ground, and the man shot him again. Ralph was then able to get up and run to the neighbor's house, looking for help.

Jazz and competition band. He is a section leader in the marching band; a scholar and one of the top bass clarinet players in Missouri. He recently earned Missouri All-State Band recognition with an honorable mention. He plays multiple instruments in the metropolitan youth orchestra. He is a 2022 Missouri scholar academy alumni. Ralph can often be found with a musical instrument. He loves them all.

<div>Anyone who knows Cait knows she is a talented artist, an avid bowler, a music lover, a deeply valued friend, and so much more. She’s also someone who has worked hard to build as much independence as possible while navigating life with a disability, supported by her family and community.

<div>Recently, Cait has faced a perfect storm of challenges. Her mom—who plays a major caregiving role—underwent spinal cord surgery and is still recovering, making day-to-day logistics more difficult for both of them. Around the same time, Cait needed several of her front teeth removed. While medically necessary, the cost of the dental bridge came as a shock, with Medicaid covering only a small portion of the expense.

<div>Like many families supporting a disabled adult, Cait’s family is already managing tight finances, unexpected car repairs, and ongoing cuts to disability benefits. The added dental bill has created significant stress at a time when they’re simply trying to keep things stable and plan for the future.

<div>This fundraiser is to help cover the remaining cost of Cait’s dental work so she can restore her smile—something that affects not just comfort and health, but confidence and daily life.
