<div>I’m sharing this on behalf of my sister and her family as my heart breaks for them. My sister is one of the kindest, warmest, most giving people I have ever known. She has spent her whole life putting everyone else first, and she would never ask for help herself. She and her family are going through something unimaginable right now, and I would do anything to help take some of the weight off her shoulders.

<div>My sister’s husband, David, is in hospice at only 61.
</div>

</div>
<div>About two years ago, everything began to change when David suffered a small stroke, followed by a series of transient ischemic attacks. This eventually led to his diagnosis of multiple myeloma, a rare and aggressive form of cancer. The cancer spread to his spine, causing excruciating pain and spasms, and sadly, it did not respond to treatment the way everyone had hoped. In just about two years, this terrible disease has taken David from being the strong, loving center of his family to being in the final stages of hospice.

<div>My sister, who has always poured herself into her career, stepped away so she could take care of David and be there for their family.
</div>
<div>David has always been the love of her life. They celebrated their 24th wedding anniversary on September 15th. He worked hard his whole career to provide for his family, and he was also the family’s glue, the one who kept everything clean, tidy, and running smoothly. Whenever life got hard, David was the one who showed up for my sister and their sons, Drew and Reece. He has been the rock of this family.

<div>Their family is incredibly close, and nothing means more to them than time together. Their favorite thing is movie night with pizza, or burritos, or really any food, as long as they’re all together. Those simple evenings are what they treasure most.

<div>Between work and raising their boys, David and my sister rarely had time for themselves. They talked for years about the trips they’d take and the life they’d enjoy once the boys were older and things slowed down. Sadly, life had different plans.
</div>

</div>
<div>It’s so easy to take family for granted until something like this happens. My sister is facing the unimaginable loss of the love of her life, while also worrying about overwhelming medical bills, funeral expenses, and how she will continue to support their family after losing David’s income.

<div>She is doing everything she can to keep their home, support their sons, and hold their family together through this devastating time.
</div>

</div>

<div>My mom, Carol Wood, passed away on September 4, 2026, after more than ten days in the hospital hooked up to machines that kept her alive but couldn't give her peace.

<div>When she was finally moved to <strong>Bruns House in Alamo, CA</strong>, everything changed. For the first time in weeks, she was unplugged and free from tubes and monitors. The nurses and staff gently bathed her, applied lotion, and positioned her just so, giving her a kind of comfort our whole family had been aching for her to have. It was the peace she deserved, and Bruns House gave it to her in her final days.

<div><strong>Bruns House is part of Hospice East Bay, and it exists to give people like my mom compassionate, dignified end-of-life care.</strong> Every gift, no matter the size, helps them keep doing that for other families facing what we just faced.

On that day, 1000s of men and women risked their lives to help save the 1000s of Americans who were trapped in the towers. Many of those souls were lost. While there are several great organizations who support our first responders and our Veterans, there are few that do it better with more pride and professionalism than The Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation (T2T).

Support Tunnel to Towers on the 25th Anniversary of Sept 11

<div>I started swimming when I was around 3 years old. I joined my first summer league team at 5. And began swimming year-round with club teams by the time I was 8.

<div>My Dad never missed a swim meet my entire career.
</div>

<div>Even as I got faster and we traveled farther. Even when I went to college out of state and competed every weekend from fall through spring. Even when I made Nationals - my parents packed up my little brothers and drove 20 hours to watch me swim two races that lasted a total of 1 minute 15 sections - combined - two years in a row.

<div>This persisted even into adulthood, with him (thankfully) flying out to see my brothers and I swim in the Catalina sprint triathlon, and later when we also 'Escaped' from Alcatraz.
</div>

<div>He was always there. Until one day, he couldn't be.

</div>
<div>Nearly 15 years ago, my Dad lost his battle with Multiple Myeloma, a blood cancer that attacks the bone marrow. He passed away just nine months after his diagnosis.

<div>He was my best friend.

<div>For some reason, over the past year, I've found it nearly impossible to get myself back into the water. I'll go to the gym with my suit on...and walk. Or lift weights. Or stretch. I'll do almost anything else. But swimming - the sport that was such a huge part of our lives - has been the one thing I can't seem to do.

<p>Lillian has been battling Cancer since 11/15/2022.

<p>She has Stage 4 Colerectal Cancer that has mestasized to her liver and abdomen.

<p>Good news is after 4 rounds of chemo it has shrunk by 50%.

<p>Doctors have said it is not curable.However she is hopeful that she will beat it.

<div>We are actively working with UCSB to consolidate the requirements, logistics, timing, and selection procedures for Mahsa Amini's scholarship.

<div>Ideally, the Mahsa Amini scholarship is aimed to be hosted indefinitely. Yet, the overall lifetime of this scholarship depends on several legal and financial factors that will be clarified soon.

<div>Many of us- Iranian students, immigrants, and hyphenated Iranians- cannot appreciate enough the life-changing opportunity the UCSB family and campus provided us. Located on the Pacific coastline, UCSB has become a second home to many current and past students of Iranian heritage.

As of December 2022]</strong>, the <a href="https://giving.ucsb.edu/ucsb-foundation" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UCSB Foundation</a> publicly recognized the Mahsa Amini scholarship. <li><a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/salva-salmani-rezaie-254121207/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Salva Salmani-Rezaie</em></a>, is currently a Kavli postdoctoral fellow at Cornell University and will soon join Ohio State University as an Assistant Professor. Salva holds a Ph.D. degree from the Materials science department at UCSB.

<li><a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/mazadani/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Mohamad M. Nasr-Azadani</em></a><em>,</em> is a principal data scientist at Accenture in San Francisco. Mohamad holds a Ph.D. degree from the Mechanical Engineering Department at UCSB and is passionate about education.

<div><strong>No. </strong>This grassroots movement's sole mission is to empower women through graduate-level education. We do not support any political message or campaign.

Mahsa Amini Scholarship Fund

<p>During this crisis of COVID-19, it's more important than ever that we come together as a community to fight for one another. This challenge has proven itself to be something much bigger than us individually. With public schools closing and our healthcare system nearing its capacity, people with the least will suffer the most from this pandemic. I hope to encourage you all to lend a helping hand to those who need it most. <br /><br />The Coalition for Kindness is rooted in the belief that there's a light at the end of this tunnel if we put humanity first. <br /><br />Every dollar donated will provide direct relief to those who need it most. Coalition for Kindness: COVID-19 Response Fund
