Gopal Biswas

I am Gopal, a student at the University of New Orleans, and the only Bangladeshi student in the US pursuing an MFA in Film Production. My journey as a filmmaker began when I was in 6th grade. I witnessed an alarming change in the young kids around me—many started engaging in eve teasing, snatching, and even acid throwing. These behaviors were influenced by the Bangladeshi movies they watched, which at the time were some of the worst in our country's history. Even as a child, I realized that if movies could have such a negative impact, they could also be a force for good. That realization inspired me to become a filmmaker, and I have been working toward that goal ever since, despite many struggles along the way. For my thesis project, I am creating a film that tackles the urgent issues of child marriage and child labor in Bangladesh. These problems are not limited to Bangladesh—they affect countless children in developing countries around the world. Through this film, I hope to raise awareness and inspire change in our society. The funds I raise will be used to buy and rent film gear in Bangladesh, and to pay the cast and crew who will help bring this story to life. In my country, filmmaking is not always appreciated, but I believe that powerful stories can make a real difference. If people connect with the characters and witness their tragic endings, maybe they will think twice about child marriage and its impact on children’s lives.
