<div>This is an uncomfortable ask for me, but I’m reaching out because I could really use some help. On May 18th, I’m scheduled for spinal surgery on my neck after a roller derby injury last August left me with multiple herniated discs, severe nerve pain, and a long road to recovery.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>After months of rest, physical therapy, and pain management, my symptoms only got worse—loss of strength and dexterity in my hands, numbness, and pain that made daily life nearly impossible. It took months to get an MRI, which revealed four herniated discs, degenerative disc disease, and bone spurs compressing my spinal cord. My neurosurgeon has recommended a three-level spinal fusion, which is a major surgery that will take up to a year for a full recovery. I will be out of work for at least three months after the surgery. I’m grateful I’ll eventually be able to skate again, but I have to say goodbye to playing roller derby—a loss that’s been really hard to process.

<div>Financially, it’s been a rough stretch. Because it’s still early in the year, we haven’t hit our out-of-pocket maximum yet, so the bills are already piling up—and anyone who’s dealt with hospital stays knows there are always extra charges and surprises. My partner lost their job in December, so we’re already skating by on my income alone, and the last year has brought its own big expenses—braces for both kids, car repairs, even more medical bills, and just the general chaos of parenting teenagers while the world’s on fire. Our savings are pretty much depleted at this point. I’m grateful we had a cushion, but you can only prepare for so many storms at once, and I think we’ve hit our threshold. I’m anxious about the bills, the recovery, and all the unexpected things that come with major surgery.

<div>Jose Luis' family’s life changed in an instant when he was unexpectedly kidnapped by ICE in January while riding his bike. For nearly 20 years, he has built a life in this country centered around his family — living honestly, maintaining a clean record, and doing everything he could to provide stability and security for his wife and children.

<div>He and his wife are raising two children, ages 13 and 8, who depend on their father every single day. Jose Luis is a humble, kind, and deeply devoted father and husband. He is the type of person who shows up for others — always willing to help friends, neighbors, and anyone in need without hesitation. His family is his entire world.

<div>Recently, his children were able to visit their father for the first time since his detention at Adelanto. It was heartbreaking. His 8-year-old daughter kept asking when he was coming home and whether she could stay there with him. No parent should have to explain to a child why their father cannot come home. His 13-year-old is also struggling, trying to be strong while carrying confusion, fear, and pain.

<div>Hi everyone, we’re Red Stick Roller Derby, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit roller derby league based in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

<div>After 10 years in the same practice space, we unexpectedly lost our home in December 2025, when the building was purchased by a new owner. The new owner wanted to raise our monthly rent from $2,800 to almost double that amount, which simply wasn’t sustainable for our league.  We were forced to vacate the space over the holidays with only a few days' notice, which involved our members relocating 10 years' worth of league equipment, gear, seating and more to temporary storage.

<div>The good news is that we were fortunate to find a new space so we can continue practicing, training, and building our derby community. The challenge is that our new rent is $3,500 per month, which is about 25% more than our previous rent.  In addition, moving into a new facility comes with significant upfront costs, depleting league resources.

<div>Hi all, my name is Liz (or Frida, if we’ve met through the roller derby world) and I’m reaching out to ask for help on behalf of my teammate, my good friend, my jammer buddy and just an overall shining ray of light, Alexis (who you may know as Punkie Pie).

<div>On March 16th, Punk suffered a broken finger during a game. It was immediately apparent that something was really wrong, but she put on a brave face and finished the game for the sake of the team. After seeking medical attention, x-rays showed that her finger was broken in such a way that will require surgery. With the cost of the surgery itself, Punk will need to take time off work to recover. Punk is a talented musician, performer and teacher. A broken finger and surgery would be difficult for anyone to manage, but to a musician, it’s devastating. If you’ve met Punk, you know she is a compassionate friend, a supportive teammate, generous with her good vibes and has been there for myself and many others. Let’s help her get back to the things she loves doing most - music and skating.

<div>Quindes Volcanicos started in 2018, when our coaches Sant and Vic moved to Quito from Argentina. Even though previous attempts by others to create and sustain a derby team here had mostly failed within a few years, Sant and Vic were determined to bring the sport they’d both come to love, here to Ecuador and build a lasting team that could be welcoming, competitive and fun.

They immediately ran up against many challenges, challenges that come with the territory of trying to start a roller derby team from scratch in a place where most people had never even heard of the sport. Everything from not being able to find specialized derby gear and having to constantly finagle ways to bring it from Colombia or the US, to jumping from park to park/parking lot to parking lot trying to find somewhere that would let us practice without getting rained on and without getting chased out for scratching up the floors. With no league to support us and no one (yet) willing to sponsor us, we’ve had to sustain our efforts entirely through our membership fees and our collective fundraising efforts. Which, in a country where minimum salary is $450 a month and less than half the population has formal employment, has presented a hefty challenge.

<div>Still, as with most derby teams around the world, our biggest challenge came in March 2020, with the strike of the pandemic. In Ecuador, all outdoor gatherings were banned for almost a year, and many of our members who were from other countries returned home to weather the pandemic from there. Our team stuck it through with regular zoom workouts for months, and little by little began to go back to in person training as the situation allowed. By the time the ban on gatherings was entirely lifted, we were down to less than a third of the people we’d had before.

<div>But still, we persevered! Fueled by nothing more than our love for the game and our hopes and dreams for what this team could become, we pushed through. Thanks to our efforts, we’ve been able to grow from hosting practices with 3-5 people, to now consistently having more than a dozen (up to 20+!) at our main practices, plus a waiting list of another ten people excited to try out the sport. (We can unfortunately only intake a few new people at a time because of equipment limitations.)

<div>Despite not having the opportunity to play against teams other than ourselves, we’ve been able to really sharpen our skills both individually as players and together as a team. Thanks to our consistent practice; our coaches’ experience and unwavering support and guidance; our initiative to host regular games against ourselves, study international roller derby league games on Youtube, attend referee workshops online… we’ve gone from struggling to form a wall at the start to now practicing advanced strategies.

<div>On the evening of Sunday, October 16th, Vivian Dorzweiler died by suicide at her home in Gunnison, Colorado, after what can only be concluded was a long-term battle with untreated depression. Her three daughters, Hillary, Erika, and Kate, have not only been blindsided by this tragic and unexpected event, but are now facing crushing familial and financial responsibilities. Their father, John Buscovick, was under Viv’s advanced eldercare at the time of her passing. This has added a layer of complexity to an already devastating situation.

<div>The sisters are scrambling to ensure their dad gets the care he requires in the short term. They are already buckling under the pressure of covering expenses, including cremation services, food, utilities, travel expenses, the looming trickle effect of lost wages, and forthcoming attorney fees. There are likely to be a slew of other unforeseen expenses that will threaten to take them down in their efforts to handle this crisis. They need an immediate safety net while they work towards finding long-term solutions. The potential for losing the family home has become a present-day reality. We hope three months of mortgage coverage will give the grieving family a small window to make sound decisions.

Buscovick Bereavement Fund

Hi friends. Alaric and Jake were involved in a car accident in the early hours of Monday, April 19th. They were four minutes away from their home in Castle Rock, CO when Jake’s Jeep rolled over after both men fell asleep. Alaric and Jake are currently in the ICU at SkyRidge Medical Center. Both are badly injured and require surgery. Alaric has a broken sternum, a broken knee, bruised ribs, and has floating bone fragments in his back. Jake has broken his vertebrae and I’m assuming also has other injuries that are unknown to me at this time. Their medical bills are going to be exorbitant. Please consider donating if you can. On March 22, 2021 our friend Joel Giltner was at King Soopers performing his usual essential worker tasks when a terrible tragedy struck. Joel was witness to the mass shooting that killed ten people, including three coworkers. We are so thankful that Joel survived this terrible event and want to support him as much as possible during this difficult time. Survivors of mass shootings carry that horrible memory forever. Hello everyone! I am helping my dear friend Queen Milaje (aka Tracey Jones) raise money for her Auntie. We are Team Indigenous Rising, currently of Turtle Island and Hawai'i. We are the First Nations, Pacific Islanders, and Indigenous people of our Ancestral Lands and Nations, linked globally through the sport of roller derby. We are Indigenous roller derby athletes, coaching staff, and volunteers. Hi, we're Team Osom (2x4 Roller Derby), we're a team from Buenos Aires, Argentina. Since our first trip to USA we've been going up the rankings until we achieved the great honor of reaching number 12 worldwide. But this road doesn't end there: today our goals are bigger than ever since we want to get to the top 10 and make it to championships, but to accomplish this thing we need your help. 2x4 International Tour 2019

My dear friend Ottilie needs our help. A lot of people know Ottilie loves to participate in roller derby as referee Attitude &amp; Pointe and loves to dance just as much. <br /><br />What a lot of people don’t know is that Ottilie started volunteering in Emergency Medical Services at the age of 16, became a EMT at 19, and has logged over 50,000 volunteer hours in the last 20 years.<br /><br />A lot of people also don’t know that Ottilie has been fighting Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder for nearly her entire life.  <br /><br />She has been working with medical professionals to treat it for decades, but some treatments simply cannot be done with medication or therapy—but they can be done by PTSD service dogs. After careful research and discussion with both medical and service dog professionals, Ottilie opted to take on a puppy that will be reared and trained into a CGC-certified PTSD service dog for her. <br /><br />As fate would have it, Ottilie found a double-registered family kennel nearby (Pack of Pitts, based out of Buffalo, NY) that had one female puppy left from its fall litter. Even more incredibly, the puppy connected to Ottilie within minutes.  Her name is now Nasira, which means “helper, guardian” in Arabic.<br /><br />I’m sure all of you who know Ottilie have experienced her generosity and her kindness. She has been there for me at my worst moments, but her kindness extends even to those she doesn’t know—over 50,000 hours dedicated solely to helping anyone who needed help—from a hand to hold to lifesaving techniques.<br /><br />It’s our chance to help Ottilie. While puppy-rearing and training a PTSD service dog at home is less expensive and carries a much higher chance of success due to strong bonding than a “pre-trained” service dog, it still costs money and insurance does not cover service dogs.<br /><br />She and her service dog-in-training need to take obedience classes and work one-on-one with professionals. Each class costs roughly $100-$200 per session, and the one-on-one trainer costs up to $2500. The obedience classes will train the Nasira to be a good dog and Ottilie to be a good handler. Advanced training that will require a one-on-one trainer will teach the Nasira how to perform specific tasks for Ottilie such as interrupting “freeze” behavior, performing crowd control, and deep pressure therapy for flashbacks. Other costs include specialized equipment for training and working.<br /><br />Ottilie needs our help to rise up and roll out, to overcome the symptoms of PTSD that are holding her back. The funds raised from this campaign will help Nasira to become the wonderful service dog she is destined to be.
