Urgent Appeal: Rebuilding Lives After the 2025 Gilgit-Baltistan Floods Since late June 2025, Gilgit-Baltistan has been grappling with one of the most severe flood disasters in its history. Triggered by unprecedented monsoon rains and cloudbursts, these floods have wreaked havoc across the region, leading to significant loss of life and widespread destruction. The Human Cost As of August 18, 2025, the Gilgit-Baltistan Disaster Management Authority (GBDMA) reports that at least 45 individuals have lost their lives, with 42 others injured. The fatalities include 25 men, 11 women, and 9 children, highlighting the indiscriminate nature of this tragedy. The hardest-hit districts are Diamer, Ghizer, and Gilgit, where entire communities have been displaced, and essential infrastructure has been obliterated. Widespread Destruction The floods have left a trail of devastation: • 318 houses have been completely destroyed, and 674 houses have been partially damaged, leaving thousands without shelter. • Farmlands have been submerged, and livestock have been lost, jeopardizing the primary livelihoods of many families. • Roads and bridges have been washed away, isolating communities and hindering rescue and relief efforts. • Access to clean water and medical facilities has been severely limited, increasing the risk of disease outbreaks. The Need for Immediate Action In the face of this calamity, the GB government has declared a state of emergency and is coordinating with military and civilian agencies to provide relief. However, the scale of the disaster has overwhelmed local resources. Communities are in dire need of: • Emergency shelter (tents, blankets, and warm clothing) • Food and clean water supplies to sustain displaced families • Medical assistance for the injured and to prevent disease outbreaks • Reconstruction materials to rebuild homes and infrastructure How You Can Help Your generous contribution can make a tangible difference.
