<div>My name is Hani Almadhoun, and my family and friends live in the North of Gaza, Palestine. Most aid is being blocked at the border, and there isn’t nearly enough to fight back the famine or save my loved ones. So we decided to do something about it.

<div>My brother, Mahmoud Almadhoun, and his friends volunteered to start a soup kitchen in Bait Lahia, to provide hot meals to friends and neighbors. They bought four large pots, purchased wood for the fire, and risked their lives to dig up potatoes. They also purchased tomato paste and cooking oil, and three hours later, 120 families had food for the day. The next day 150 starved families ate from the kitchen.

<div>Word spread rapidly, and the next day, even more neighbors arrived. Mahmoud sprang into action, venturing out to procure ingredients for a fresh meal. He returned with leafy greens, onions, and mushrooms, crafting a new dish that was as delightful as it was nourishing. The kitchen's capacity has now expanded to accommodate meals for up to 3000 people daily, and the numbers continue to grow. For many, this was their first substantial meal in days, and the departure from canned food was a welcomed change that filled hearts with gratitude.

</li>
<li>Additionally, they are located in the heart of the market, so they can easily spot any of these veggies and cooking essentials arriving at the market.

<li>They have also visited farms close to the Green Line to find veggies and have been lucky a few times. Once, they purchased overgrown zucchinis that should have been picked weeks ago.
</li>
<li>Mom and my sisters lovingly wake up early to peel and prep the food for the day's meals.

<div><strong>"I'll never give up!"</strong> That was Noah Kenneth Bush's favorite thing to say. Only now, it is Noah's family that is living by that motto, without him. He was a vibrant young man, full of life not yet lived. Noah's death is still under investigation, as it should be. Most of the investigation so far has been conducted by his family and people in the community who care. It all just doesn't make sense. Not yet.

Help Noah's Family to Never Give Up

<div>It is with heavy hearts that we share that Dr. Yoko DeRose passed away on February 14, 2024 after a battle with cancer, the very disease she researched for the last 15+ years. Yoko joined Dr. Alana Welm's lab at Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI) in 2008 and was a pioneer in developing breast cancer patient-derived xenograft (PDX) models, which are now used throughout the world to advance breast cancer research. Through that work, she also helped initiate the Comparative Oncology Resource at HCI, which eventually became the Preclinical Research Shared Resource. In 2019 Yoko transitioned to Dr. Siwen Hu-Lieskovan’s lab, where she was eager to apply her considerable talents in immunostaining tissues to important clinical trials in immunotherapy for melanoma and other cancers. She became an expert at creating multiplex staining panels and also contributed her skills to advance the research immunohistochemistry services within the HCI Biorepository and Molecular Pathology Shared Resource. Yoko was a committed scientist who had considerable impact on cancer research at HCI and far beyond. She was also an active member of the community and often organized the ‘giving trees’ during the holiday season to help those in need. Her calm energy was comforting to so many, and she will be greatly missed. She leaves behind her husband, Paul, and 11-year old daughter, Kiara. Our thoughts and condolences go out to Yoko’s family, colleagues, and friends. Yoko's work was the family's main source of income and we are seeking support to help her family with expenses during this difficult time.

My name is Merb Jones and I am raising money to help my daughter, <b>Lili Huettlinger</b>, with medical bills and cost of living related to her recent diagnosis of <b>Malignant Melanoma</b>. A diagnosis with a 10-year survival rate of merely 24%. <i>She herself is only 24.</i> As her mother I am having a hard time saying "cancer" but that's what it is. My baby girl has cancer, and I need your help.<br /><br />Lili received her diagnosis on 9/20/21 after having a <i>mole removed</i> from behind her right ear. We were hopeful the cancer would be contained regionally, but following surgery on October 15th, we learned the <i>cancer had taken over the lymph nodes</i> in her head and neck. Lili was given the advanced diagnosis of <b>Stage 3D Metastatic Melanoma</b>.<i><b> </b></i>In that moment, this went beyond the seemingly innocuous diagnosis of skin cancer, to a <i>life-long battle.<br /><br /></i>She has since undergone 2 additional <i>surgeries</i>, a <i>plastic surgery</i> reconstruction, 3 more <i>biopsies</i>, 20 <i>radiation</i> treatments, 4 <i>infusions</i>, fought off 5 <i>infections</i>, and has had countless appointments, scans, tests, labs, <i>acute care visits</i>, and <i>hospital admissions</i>. She is currently in the year-long treatment process of <b>immunotherapy</b>, IV infusions similar to chemotherapy that she will receive <i>once every 6 weeks until January of 2023</i>, and after every infusion, we hold our breath.<br /><br />The drug used for the <b>immunotherapy (</b><i>pembrolizumab [Keytruda])</i> has a <i>laundry list of side effects</i> that Lili is all too familiar with. They are intense and miserable, and appear (and disappear) randomly and suddenly, without any notice. These <i>sporadic illnesses </i>in combination with the daily <i>fatigue, muscle weakness, poor appetite, and insomnia</i> Lili experiences have made it <i>impossible for her to work.</i><br /><br /><span>Lili is a </span><b>fiercely passionate ICU nurse</b><span>, and due to the intensity of treatment and severity of side effects, she has been unable to practice since October of last year. </span><b>Every day Lili is inside the hospital walls as a patient and not as a nurse is tremendously difficult for her.</b><br /><br />Please support Lili in any way you can and GET YOUR MOLES CHECKED! <i>If you want Lili to receive 100% of your donation</i> please Venmo her @Lili518

Walter Enslin Greer

<div>Three months ago, our brother Spencer, his wife Denise, and their one-year-old daughter Hazel, left Salt Lake for Washington state to start a dream job he’d been preparing for since high school. Two months into training, he fell down four times at work with crippling back pain. The searing and continuous pain was the result of a broken back that kept him confined to a recliner and then a hospital bed. Ultimately the cause of the fracture was found to be multiple myeloma, a bone marrow cancer.

<div>Spencer begins his cancer treatment journey in early October. We’re hoping for the best but are aware of the many unknowns. In the meantime, he can’t work, and the time frame for his return to employment is uncertain. He is so grateful to have health insurance. However, mounting medical bills, a deluge of expenses and Pacific Northwest rent have helped him understand that his diminished financial resources will not stretch to meet all the family’s increasing needs.

<div>Paysley and their family in their time of need. Paysley is our strong, beautiful 13-year old that is going through so much right now. Being born with a congenital heart defect, we knew her journey would be challenging. At the beginning 2021 we were given the worst news any parent or child could hear Cancer. After treatment, we thought we could get back to the new normal for Paysley, but it has been an uphill battle. Through the last 6 months, we have spent every other week in the hospital. January 5th, we were admitted to the hospital for extreme oxygen needs and electrolyte replacement. We didn’t know that we were slowly losing grip on what was truly wrong. Her belly was filling like a balloon, and they found a hole in her intestines. January 15th, they took her back for emergency surgery and removed a large portion of her intestines. Leaving her with an ileostomy. Her body is fighting so hard to heal that she is now highly malnourished and needs tube feeds for supplemental feeding. Her fight is not over, and it is going to be hard, but she is a fighter. In the last few days, we have received the worst news yet. Paysley has been diagnosed with a new form of cancer. It is called Large B cell non Hodgkin’s lymphoma. It has spread throughout her tiny, frail body. The doctors have informed the family that there is not much left that they can do. We are heartbroken and doing our best to be close as a family and praying for a miracle.

Paysley In Her Time of Need

<div>As Kasson explained in his story, he is fighting a lot of internal battles during his recovery from last year's attack. In addition to the mental trauma, he is now blind in both eyes with no light perception. One of the biggest tragedies of Kasson's story is how underserved he has been, both by society and the justice system. Both he and his family are now facing significant financial challenges, which have been made much more dire by Kasson's inability to work at the moment. <br /><strong><br /></strong>Kasson worked as a bartender and server for over a decade and has over 15 years in the food service industry. But due to his blindess, he is unable to work in the field where he has gained this experience. He'll need school and vocational training. We want to give him time, space, and security as he rethinks his future steps and develops an entirely new skillset. We'd like to find him new housing. Currently Kasson's family lives in one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in NYC. We want him to be in a place that he feels safe being outside, so that he can explore and integrate into the community. We think this will be a huge step toward rebuilding his mental health.  <br /><br />In addition to these pressing needs, it would be nice to give Kasson a few years of security as he recovers from a total loss of income. Let's Help Kasson Get On His Feet

<p><strong>We are fundraising to help Paul build Dikan-- the first photo library in Ghana. </strong>This is no daydream. Paul is a man on a mission.  He's collected 30,000 books. (A process currently on hold because he threw out his back while loading the last batch on a truck.) He's registered his nonprofit in Ghana. He's formed a Board Directors consisting of Ghanaian educators and business people. He's met ministers and government officials. And he's also networked with publishers, executives, and administrators in America. There are plenty of people willing to help by donating resources and expertise.  Everyone is currently in a holding pattern while they wait to see if Paul can raise the funds. He's carried the ball as far as possible without money. There will be no stopping him once he's able to purchase some land and begin construction. This is where we come in.  <br /><br /><strong>Paul's first priority is to purchase land in Accra-- the capital of Ghana. </strong>He has surveyed and researched several properties. The plots that are most suitable to his vision will cost about $500,000. Once the land is purchased, the library will officially have a home and Paul's ability to secure partners and marshal resources will greatly increase. I've been watching him work obsessively on this project for the past several months. I am constantly being amazed by the meetings he has taken and the network he has built. I'm fully convinced that even with the land alone, nothing will stop Paul from completing the project. But....<br /><br /><strong>Next comes the construction of the building itself. </strong>Paul has been consulting heavily with architects and contractors. Numerous plans and sketches have been drafted.  The current vision involves a modern library, courtyard, photo and film studios, theatre, gallery, events space, outdoor exhibition yard, archival rooms, storage, classrooms, centre for kids and teens, media centre, and offices. The contractors are telling him that an iteration of this can be built for $1,000,000, and can be completed in two to three years. <br /><br />We have the opportunity to enable Paul to build West Africa's premiere learning center for photography. These funds will allow him to make his current vision real.  But knowing Paul, my sneaking suspicion is this: the more real this becomes, the more people will want to get involved. More resources will become available. <font color="#333333">Hi everyone, I’m fundraising for my 2 kids needs. They are in critical conditions from a vehicle accident. Friday afternoon I found out my son Hugo and Ruby where at John C Lincoln hospital. My husband quickly grabbed our newborn and I followed to the our vehicle to look for our kids. We saw the vehicle totaled and I became very afraid. I knew instantly something was not right. We get to the hospital and the nurses put me and my baby in a private room. Everything made me even more nervous. Time went slow and I still couldn’t see my kids. Finally they allowed me to have an opportunity to see my daughter Ruby she was stable enough to fly her over to Phoenix Children Hospital where they would treat her head trauma and injuries. My son Hugo was even more complicated they couldn’t get him stable. They still gave me the opportunity to see him before he went into surgery. His stomach was bleeding, also had head trauma, and broken leg. Still so much more wrong but the doctors dealt with what was critical to his survival. He had his spline removed his kidneys are damaged and has fractures 13 ribs and pelvic. All I could do is pray and have faith that my son and daughter would be ok. It’s been almost a week now and they still are stable with small improvements but all good signs towards there recovery. I’m having to go from one hospital to another and finding time to take care of my newborn baby May 7, 2021. My husband had to take time away from his new job at Amazon.com just to watch over our little one while I cared for my 17yr old son and 14 year old daughter Ruby her birthday is also June 13,  2021. Ruby has been more reactive my son wasn’t woken up. Medicine have decreased so that we can see them start to react on there own. So far so good. <strong>As you share this post and memories of Laura, please use the hashtag #LauraLou  so we can all enjoy those memories together. </strong><br /><br /><br />After an emotionally and physically taxing battle with ovarian cancer, our cherished Laura Lou has passed away - leaving Bryce and Lula behind to find a new type of normal without their wife and mom.<br /><br />This story is not new, but the pain and loss in these situations with a young family never cease to cause heartache and vibrations of sorrow among all of us.<br /><br />As friends of Laura and Bryce, asking for and receiving their help is a pattern we know well. They were a team constantly willing to give help yet likely to shy away from receiving it. Their dream team lost a key player this week, so we are now reaching out and asking for your help as a Dad and his little girl attempt to move forward.<br /><br />These funds will go directly to Bryce and Lula so they can have time and space to heal and find joy together. <p><a href="https://www.ksl.com/article/46772969/police-investigating-driver-that-crashed-into-home-pinned-child-with-truck" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">child hospitalized after a truck crashed into home</a> <br /><br />Zahid (10yrs old) and his siblings were the victims of a reckless driver in Salt Lake City, Utah. The driver crashed into their home and Zahid was hit. He is doing well but will have several surgeries that will be on his face, femur, and possibly brain due to a hematoma. Until now he has responded very well, Katia (Zahid’s mom) is a single mother of 3 and will need help from anyone who is able to give.

We are not a bunch of redneck, racist, bigots. Most of us are dads, moms, friends, hard-workers, kind-hearted, do right by each other, help our fellow man, good neighbors and welcoming to all. <br /><br />I have been a Utah Jazz fan my entire life. Luis Gustavo Lopez, 18, had been tinkering around on a couple of projects while they waited. Jose, 51, had gone in to get warm and eat breakfast.<br />Microwave ajar, he set down the plastic bowl and ran to the front door.<br /><br /><br />A man was standing in the courtyard of the Salt Lake City mechanic shop with a metal bar in his hand that looked like it had been plied off a stop sign. He was yelling slurs at Luis and threatening him.<br />“I hate Mexicans,” he spat. “I f---ing hate Mexicans.”<br />“Are you part of the Mexican mafia?”<br />“I’m here to kill a Mexican.”<br />Jose stepped in front of his son, and the man began swinging the five-foot pole. Luis grabbed a bar from a tool chest and tried to defend his dad. The man slugged the teen in the face, knocking him unconscious, and then started to beat him.<br /><br /><br />Trying again to shield Luis, Jose got hit in the arm and the back. His brother rounded the corner, coming to check on the noise, and scared the man. He bolted. And they called police.<br />“They’re very shaken up,” said Veronica Lopez, Jose’s daughter, who recounted the events for her father and uncle two days later from the hospital, where her brother is still being treated. “My family feels targeted.”<br />The attack at Lopez Tires happened Tuesday about 9 a.m. Salt Lake City police say it’s too soon to know if the case will be handled as a hate crime. But they’ve arrested the alleged attacker, Alan Dale Covington, 50, on suspicion of two counts of aggravated assault.”<br /><br /><br />So...this is for Luis and his father, Jose. Let’s show them that there are WAY more good and kind people out there than the evil man that attacked them. All donations will help go to their medical bills and financial support while Luis is unable to work in the shop with his father.<br /><br /><br />I don’t know any of them personally- but I personally feel like this is our community, and we must do better.

Carmen was diagnosed with stage III breast cancer in August 2017. Since then she underwent two different chemotherapy treatments, as well as a surgical treatment. The treatments intensively affected her ability to go to work at the cafeteria at Huntsman Cancer Institute. Since August, she has used all of her annual sick and vacation days while receiving treatment and attempting to recover. She has to work every day in order to be able to pay her bills despite being tired from treatment. She had to move out of her apartment near campus due to financial barriers, and a friend hosts her now. <br /><br />Carmen's beautiful smile and her positive energy reflect exactly what we are trying to provide at Huntsman Cancer Institute every day: Hope. Hope that we are moving faster than cancer and eventually will be able to cure this terrible disease.<br /><br />The aim of this fundraiser is to help Carmen with the expenses of medical treatment and the ability to take an unpaid day off when needed on her way to being cancer free.<br /><br /><br /><br />About the fundraiser: <br /><br />I am Caroline Himbert, 25 from Germany. I am a PhD student in Population Health Sciences at the University of Utah and Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI). I joined HCI in October 2015 after studying medicine in Germany.<br /><br />I know Carmen since she started working at the cafeteria at HCI. No matter how hard school, work, and in general life is treating me, she would make me smile every time I walk in the cafeteria. She motivates everybody of us at HCI to keep fighting against this terrible disease. As soon as I heard about her financial situation I knew that I want to help! Together with Dr. Cornelia Ulrich, I started this GoFundMe page to help Carmen paying her medical bills. Further, with the additional funds she will be able to take unpaid days off on days when she undergoes radiation therapy and still be able to pay her bills. Financial toxicity is becoming more and more a problem for cancer patients, specifically in the United States. This December we will be giving Christmas to the El Sauzal Orphanage in Ensenada, Mexico!  We will also be planting an orchard at the orphanage and giving out hygiene kits to twenty families in the community. We serve 25 children from ages 2-18. Donations will be used for the orchard, Christmas for the kids, and hygiene kits. Any donation large or small will make a difference in the lives of these children and families! Thank you for your support!
