<div>Gretchen Ashbeck, an art teacher at Walter Johnson Academy of International Studies, recently experienced a devastating tragedy. On July 7, 2026, Gretchen’s home caught fire, resulting in second and third-degree burns to her face and arms. She is currently receiving outpatient treatment for her injuries. The fire not only destroyed all of Gretchen’s belongings but also took the life of her beloved dog. Currently, Gretchen and her two children are living out of a motel. Because her ID, cards, and payment methods were lost in the blaze, even basic daily transactions are an immense challenge.

<div> As a colleague and friend, we have witnessed firsthand how much Gretchen means to her students and the school community. She is a caring teacher, always encouraging creativity and kindness in her classroom. Gretchen has a son and daughter who are also affected by this sudden loss. Now, she needs our support to get back on her feet. Every dollar raised will go directly toward immediate emergency needs: food, temporary lodging costs, clothing, and essential toilet items; fees and support needed to replace critical IDs and documents; and rehousing costs such as security deposits, furniture, kitchen essentials, and bedding for a new permanent home.

<div>My name is Jessica, I was a special education teacher for 15 years and retired early due to medical disability. I’m reaching out with an urgent plea to help me save a sweet puppy named Gabe.

<div>Gabe was the last of seven puppies born to a beautiful mama dog who was euthanized after ending up at a high-kill shelter in California. Gabe was added to the euthanasia list and placed on a medical waiver due to a treatable respiratory infection. He is a sweet, gentle, loving little soul who deserves a chance at life — and with your help, he can finally have one.

<div>When I saw that he was added to the euthanasia list on 9/4/25, I scrambled to see if there was anything I could do to save him. I was ready to fly from Wisconsin to California to bring him here, but unfortunately I would not have made it in time.  I lost my job a couple of months ago after being hospitalized for yet another medical condition. I'm not the type of person who usually asks for things, and if I do, there's a reason and a need. I just couldn't let him die.

<div>I’ve found a wonderful rescue organization who was able to successfully pull Gabe from the shelter and will transport him across the country to me, where he’ll have a safe and loving forever home. But to make this rescue possible, I need help covering the costs associated with saving him.

Help Save Gabe – A Puppy’s Second Chance at Life

LETS DO THIS!***<br /><br />Milwaukee is the most segregated metropolitan area in the US, and COVID-19 is devastating communities of color in the city. One year ago Milwaukee County and the City of Milwaukee declared racism a public health crisis, and the COVID-19 pandemic reflects this reality. The 53215 ZIP code on Milwaukee's south side is one of three areas in the city with a disproportionate number of COVID-19 cases. The area has more Latinos than any other ZIP code in Wisconsin. By some estimates, Black residents make up 80% of COVID-19 related deaths in Milwaukee county where they only constitute 26% of the population. <br /><br />In light of this situation, <a href="https://helenwiththegoldteeth.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Helen with the Gold Teeth</a>  is partnering with the <a href="https://mccwi.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Milwaukee Christian Center</a>  and <a href="https://tandemmke.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Tandem</a>  to help feed those in need of food assistance. All money raised will be split evenly between these two organizations. <br /><br />The <a href="https://mccwi.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Milwaukee Christian Center</a>  believes that people also have a right to their dignity when seeking assistance. That’s why they operate as a Choice Pantry, meaning families can select culturally appropriate food that best meets their needs, which minimizes waste and contributes to a more compassionate atmosphere. MCC typically serves 1,000 people, but that figure has tripled during the pandemic. Funds will go towards additional staffing, purchasing supplemental food to add to other donations, purchasing accessible lunch foods for families to prepare for students at home and keeping the food pantry doors open.<br /><br /><a href="https://tandemmke.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Tandem</a> , a northside Milwaukee restaurant, has ceased their normal operations in order to serve 300-400 packaged meals per day to people in need.  Your donations will be used to continue serving these meals, each of which cost $5 on average to make. Many of their patrons previously relied on soup kitchens that have closed their doors due to COVID, they have also supported recently unemployed low wage workers, service workers and the elderly. <br /><br /><br />Your donation will help guarantee that these two organizations can continue to fight food insecurity and keep Milwaukee fed.
