Hello, my name is Bekki, and I'm reaching out for your support as I navigate one of the most challenging times in my life. I am attempting to rebuild my life after enduring years of devastating emotional, psychological, financial, and legal abuse at the hands of my ex-husband, a malignant narcissist. This has left me not only with deep psychological scars and disabled, but also in a precarious financial situation. Here’s a bit about my journey: Abandonment: My ex-husband left without warning or explanation, leaving me with the burden of trying to pay all of our bills on my own. He went out to get a Bloody Mary before we were supposed to go to a family BBQ at HIS parents' home and never came back. Financial Devastation: I was unable to keep up with payments on all of our household bills with my salary alone. I did my best, sometimes having to choose between feeding myself or paying the electricity. In addition to the bills I was already struggling to pay, my ex-husband canceled my cell phone and car insurance and hired an attorney to represent him. I was now faced with the additional costs of starting a new cell phone plan, car insurance, and legal fees. Job Loss: The ongoing psychological trauma took a toll on my mental and physical health. Between medical appointments and court-related appointments, I was not able to maintain my previous level of work, leading to the loss of my job. Pro-Se: I had to make the difficult decision to fire my attorney as I could not afford to pay him and he was unwilling to work with my financial situation. I applied and was approved for a pro bono attorney; however, the average wait time to have an attorney assigned was 6-8 months. The judge overseeing my divorce was unwilling to postpone the proceedings to allow for representation. Homelessness: My ex and his attorney, through lies and manipulation, were able to get the judge to order the sale of our home prior to the divorce being finalized, with any proceeds to be held by my ex's attorney until after the final decree. With no job, no savings, and my credit score shot by this point, I had no way of obtaining housing. From March 5th to April 29th, I slept in my car, borrowed money for budget motels when the weather was bad, and worse, I was forced to find temporary fosters for my dogs. Trailer: After my divorce was finalized and I was able to access a portion of what I was awarded, I purchased a used travel trailer 3 hours north of where our home was. It was my only option to get my dogs back ASAP, 2 of whom are service dogs. This was only meant to be a temporary solution for the summer as the trailer is not insulated and relies on an outside water spigot for running water. In MN, this means I do not currently have running water and am relying on bottles of water for myself and my dogs. Ongoing Harassment: My ex-husband continues to use the legal system to his benefit. He has failed to pay his half of the now defaulted bills, he has yet to sign over the title to my 2009 Camry so that I am able to sell it, and his lawyer has threatened to withhold my monthly spousal maintenance if I attempt to address these issues, as well as a clerical mistake on the decree, with the court. My ex-husband has also driven past my trailer on more than one occasion. I live 3 hours north of him, in a remote, wooded area. I do not feel safe! I have been taking steps toward restoring my independence. I am in therapy and exploring more intensive treatments to address my C-PTSD. However, I am unable to make progress if I don't feel safe leaving my trailer. With this in mind, my therapist and I have come up with an achievable plan to ensure my safety that will allow me to continue healing and is sustainable. This plan involves me moving across the country to an area that is more affordable long term, has access to great mental health and medical facilities, and has rental homes willing to work with my credit and are suitable for my dogs. I just need a helping hand to afford the upfront costs associated with the move.
