Dear friends, family, and sierra leone community, It is with a heavy heart that I am announcing the death of Fatima Kamara. For those of you that knew her, you knew that she was loved by anyone who came across her. Maybe many months ago we thought it could never happen to us, to someone we loved. She lived for helping others and for enriching the lives of everyone she came across. This mentality isn’t innate for all, but for Fatima it was. So why am I writing to you, dear strangers, about my loved one? As you can likely imagine, these times have not been friendly to my family in terms of finances. We would love nothing more than to give Fatima a sensible funeral service, but we cannot do so alone. Every donation will get us closer to putting Fatima to rest peacefully where she belongs. Here is a link to the donation page we have started [link]. As you will see our goal is $25,000 and we hope to raise this amount by Sunday, September 27th. I want to thank you deeply for taking the time to read about Fatima and for your thoughts. Blessings, Alhaji Summah.

Today we are reaching out to family and friends for your financial help in support of Maceo Young Jr, our oldest brother, best friend, and loving husband. On February 7th he suffered a second stroke in a span of a week. The 2nd event ended up leaving him in critical condition; paralyzed from the neck down and unable to perform basic life functions. In the last three months Maceo has gone from being unable to talk and using a feeding tube to swallowing, eating solid foods, and being able to carry on a conversation. Unfortunately, he has only regained full movement in his right forearm and hand. Currently Maceo has very little mobility and requires one to one care throughout the day. With Maceo coming home from the hospital now is the time he needs your help. The funds raised will be put towards medical bills that are not covered by insurance, mobility equipment, caretaker support and various modifications to enable Mace to live a fulfilling life on his long road to recovery. We would like to thank everyone for their time and support and ask that you keep our big brother, best friend and loving husband in your prayers. Please consider sharing Maceo’s story with your friends and family via email or social media.

On June 8, 2017, our beloved Akua Akyaa Nkrumah passed away suddenly. Our hearts are heavy from the loss. Akua cannot be described in just a few words. Simultaneously firey and sweet, strong-willed, compassionate, caring -- from the smallest creatures to the world at-large, conscientious, smart, bright, motivated, and passionate. She handled life's challenges with perserverance and grace that inspired others. As a U.S.-born Ghanaian, Akua called Ghana her home. She loved the people and the land and served both as an environmentalist. Accordingly, she will be laid to rest in Ghana, amongst her friends and family. We humbly ask for your assistance in giving Akua a proper burial. Any support you can provide is sincerely appreciated. We will provide information about ceremonies in Ghana and Washington, D.C., when arrangements are final.

***Please read the latest update!! I'm overwhelmed by this response. This is unbelievable!!*** You can also: Follow Jessie Grady on Facebook For Updates On the night before Thanksgiving, I witnessed a white woman engage in a 30 minute racist rant (complete with yelling and cursing and repeated references to the fact that employees were African American) against the employees at a Chicago Michaels store - because she did not like that they offered her the option to purchase a re-usable shopping bag for her larger items. I was directly in front of this customer in line, I stopped at the exit to show my 2 year old a Christmas ornament and witnessed first-hand that the Michaels’ employees did nothing to provoke this verbal attack, and in fact treated all customers with professionalism and courtesy. I was so shocked by this unprovoked attack that I captured 17 minutes of it on video on my phone. I am starting this gofundme because I’d like to do something to try to make it up to the employee who was the main target of this racist attack. I’d like to show her that many people are horrified by how this woman treated her, and that we stand with her and appreciate her hard work. She inspired me because despite the hateful words that were being hurled in her direction, she stood in that entranceway calm and unmoving to protect her staff and customers. Her calmness calmed me and I saw a true leader, which in today’s world, is something to be rewarded. All proceeds from this gofundme will be given to this employee, who has three children, to try to make her busy holiday season brighter. In the current climate I believe it’s very important that we go out of our way to treat each other with dignity, kindness and politeness, and that we stand up for each other when we see people being mistreated. ***Thank you so much for everyone's kindness and generosity, I want to reiterate that the police were called, bystanders, including myself, were actively involved and the staff handled this flawlessly. There is so much you don't see in this video. Atleast ten customers stood next to the manager and waited for the police. That is what shocked the manager and myself the most, that people actually spoke up. You had to be there to see how the people were united. Thank you so much for helping me with this small gesture to thank this employee. Over 48,000 people have seen this video, if that many people gifted $1 this could be life-changing. I saw a hero and a leader in this manager. I was inspired by her. This incident started over a $1 re-usuable bag, but it's not new for African Americans and other POC. We have to stand up, if you can't speak up, at least be a witness and share your story.

PLEASE NOTE: that in order to reduce our costs we have moved our fundraising to campaign to: https://www.youcaring.com/sierraleoneaction About Sierra Leone Action Sierra Leone Action (SLA) is an organization comprising a global team of Sierra Leonean physicians and other professionals who have developed a coordinated approach to implement Convalescent Serum Therapy (CST) using international guidelines and best practices in Sierra Leone. The organization, which was formed in August 2014, is an implementing partner working with the Government of Sierra Leone in CST study and treatment. Our Vision To end the Ebola epidemic in Sierra Leone. Our Mission We will leverage Sierra Leonean expertise to design and implement solutions that improve the outcomes for Ebola victims while preventing future epidemics. SLA is poised to implement CST in partnership with the Government of Sierra Leone As an implementing partner of the Government of Sierra Leone, Sierra Leone Action is poised to begin a detailed course of treatment which will ensure lives are saved. All regulatory approvals have been granted for CST trials and therapy in Sierra Leone. US company Fresenius Kabi has donated nine Fenwal Autopheresis-C® instruments, all required related supplies and training for the operation and service of the equipment. The Autopheresis-C® system is a fully automated plasmapheresis instrument. It is used to collect only the plasma from a donor while returning back to the donor the other blood components, including red cells and platelets. Furthermore, two Abaxis Piccolo blood analysers valued at a total of $16,000 have been donated to SLA, along with $2,500 worth of consumables for this equipment. Through our local partners, Women in National Development (WIND), we have identified and prescreened Ebola survivors who are willing to donate their blood for the study and therapy. SLA has developed detailed protocols and procedures in line with international standards for the collection, storage and administering of blood to ensure safe and disease-free transfusion of blood to Ebola patients. In effect, SLA has put in place all the regulatory and operational modalities for the collection of the survivors’ (convalescent) blood and stand ready to commence execution of CST as the front-line treatment for Ebola infection in Sierra Leone. The organization’s fundraising efforts continue SLA has raised a total of $13,986 to date (26 November 2014). Approximately$10,000 of these funds have been used to: (1) Train Outreach Workers in the prescreening and recruitment of Survivors as blood donors; (2) Pay for a Pilot Project to engage and recruit the first batch of donors; (3) Pay for the training of four qualified individuals as Trainers in the Operation and Service of the Fenwal Autopheresis-C®; (4) Purchase two automated blood pressure monitoring devices (Dinamaps); (5) Purchase of 200 Abaxis biochemistry reagent discs; (6) Pay for shipping and clearance of devices; (7) Cover administrative charges such as crowd-funding platform fees, wire transfer fees and bank fees. We have adjusted our fundraising amount to take account of the donations received (equipment and cash). We estimate needing another $55,000 to meet our project goals. Donations recieved will be used to: > purchase the remaining equipment (e.g. portable plasma freezers, suction machines, additional blood pressure machines, pulse oximeters, etc) necessary for the study and treatment; > purchase protective gear to ensure the strictest safety guidelines are adhered to; > conduct training of the lab staff and bio-medic engineers on the ground for the operation and service of the Autopheresis-C® machines; > identify and prescreen additional blood donors; > Communication devices for data collection and analysis; > Research and lab staff fees; > and pay for logistical support i.e. transportation and accommodation for outreach workers and survivors; transportation of equipment; and fuel costs. Please note that funds are being collected by our fundraising partner Sawaneh Charity Foundation, a registered non-profit organization in the USA. Funds raised on this platform are transferred directly to our team in Sierra Leone to cover costs as detailed above. To learn more about Sierra Leone Action (SLA), visit our website at www.saloneaction.com .

Ebola Cure: Survivor's Blood

Lumley Aberdeen Beach was once a place of pride for families and children in Sierra Leone.

Today, trash and poor waste management threatens that legacy. We are taking action to restore it.

For over 50 consecutive days, our team has carried out daily cleanups at Lumley Aberdeen Beach.

Even as high tides bring in new trash, we show every day that a clean beach is possible with consistent effort.

Funds from this GoFundMe are being used right now to pay local workers, complete a locally built beach-cleaning system and purchase a tricycle so trash can be removed directly from the beach.

This is hands-on impact. Real work. Real change.

Your support turns action into impact.

Help us keep Lumley Aberdeen Beach clean.
