Rebuilding our lives in Gaza

<div>My close friend of eight years, Maria Sharif turned 24 in January. Last month, she was diagnosed with clear cell cancer. We're all shaken by this news, but none of us are more shaken than her and her family. Aside from cancer being a scary diagnosis, the financial implications a diagnosis has for an individual are just as terrifying. While Maria has insurance, her insurance will only cover treatments and procedures within her insurance network. We're currently waiting to hear the stage of the cancer, but in the meantime, we're asking for your help to alleviate the financial strain and burden while Maria fights to beat this.

<div>If you’ve ever met Jet and Bip Roberts then you know they would stop at a moment's notice to help a family member, a friend or even a stranger. They represent what it truly means to be an integral part of a local community. If you shop or eat in downtown Salisbury then you know their familiar and friendly faces are always there to lend a hand, an ear or to make you laugh. They’re woven into the fabric of Salisbury and everyone that knows them, can’t help but love them. This love extends to their son Caden, who we’ve all watched grow into an amazing young man with a bright future.

<div>Caden Roberts takes after his parents, he’s loving, generous, incredibly smart (straight-A student!), funny and above all else, strong and resilient. He’s just 16 years old and should be doing what kids his age are doing, learning to drive, goofing off with friends, forming crushes, rebelling against his parents, etc…but instead, he’s in a fight for his life.

<div>After experiencing jaw pain and numerous subsequent tests, Caden was diagnosed with stage 3 lymphoma. Jet and Bip are doing everything they can to ensure Caden has the best medical care and the best chance at beating this disease. He’s currently undergoing a rigorous chemotherapy treatment plan at Children’s National Hospital in Washington, D.C. This requires him to travel the 3 hours (on a good day) to DC and be admitted for a week at a time, on and off, for the next 6 to 8 months.

<div>The emotional and mental anguish a parent experiences when their child is diagnosed with a deadly disease is beyond anything most of us can imagine. On top of all that, Jet and Bip are also carrying the burden of having to travel out of town, for weeks at a time, to receive the necessary medical care for Caden. To logistically and financially make this happen, Jet and Bip have to make a lot of difficult decisions.

<div>They would never ask for help themselves because they’re always the ones lending a hand, so we, as their friends are asking for them. Smith Island Tornado Damage - Recovery and Cleanup

<p>Many of you know Wes well, and are maybe fans of his music or knew him from his days as a pastor. Those of you that know him particularly well, know his heart and how amazing it is. Recently though, we found out it needs a major update. On Tuesday, August 10th, Wes will have a quintuple bypass. This has been quite the unexpected journey, especially in the midst of a fully booked summer for him. We also found out the recovery time could potentially be double what we originally anticipated. It's quite humbling to be in this position, but many have asked how they could support us, so we decided to do this GoFundMe campaign.

<p>Many of you also know how difficult last year was for gig workers and the live music industry. His season last summer was virtually non-existent. He came into this season invigorated and ready to get back to work and had a full calendar through September. To have that screech to a grinding halt, mid-season was not only unexpected, but will have a huge impact on our finances. Not that you can ever predict timing, but my daughter is moving out the end of this month so we'll have those additional expenses and three more rooms to furnish. We knew this of course, but didn't expect this sudden detour. In addition, he does have insurance but we have no idea how much of this medical expense we will be left with.

<p><strong><iframe media_type="0" media_id="Frgkb1PBIb8" class="youtube-replace" title="YouTube video player" style="margin-bottom:20px;width:560px;height:315px;" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/Frgkb1PBIb8/?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="1"></iframe><br /><br />Verónica Martínez Vargas</strong> is a tenacious young woman pursuing a dream: becoming a physician assistant so that she can provide medical care to the community which made her dream possible by providing her with a safe place to live and the gift of a first-rate education. Unfortunately, Verónica is facing a host of challenges in trying to secure her education.
</p>

<p>Verónica is not a stranger to overcoming obstacles. At the age of 10, she came to the United States from Mexico, ultimately settling in Maryland. Verónica is a DREAMer, one of the nearly 700,000 immigrants who came to the United States as children who are allowed to live and work in the United States but are not citizens. Verónica embodies the success of so many DREAMers. The first in her family to complete formalized schooling, Verónica distinguished herself upon graduation from high school by attending Salisbury University, graduating as a physics major with an outstanding grade point average. Verónica’s excellence in the classroom was matched by her sense of civic duty. She became a strong advocate for her community, spending countless hours of her free time while advocating for the passage of Maryland’s version of the DREAM Act.
</p>

<p>Even after the DREAM Act passed, Verónica refused to slow down. After graduation, Verónica obtained employment as a pharmacy tech and continued volunteering, this time helping other immigrants understand their rights. Most recently, she has been serving as a community health worker with Migrant Clinicians Network promoting COVID-19 prevention and vaccines.. She also continues to be a resource for her peers through a position of mentorship and support through a local wellness center. To borrow the words of one colleague, Verónica reflects the definition of integrity by virtue of being the kind of person who gives back, and yet rarely takes for herself.
</p>

<p>Verónica's personal character, and unrelenting dedication to the community, is why we are asking for the the public's assistance to help realize her dream of becoming a physician assistant. Her dream is already underway; Verónica has been accepted into Physician Assistant Program at The City College of New York's CUNY School of Medicine. The actual cost of her education will be $75,000 just for tuition for the two-year program, plus an additional $48,000 in living expenses. We are hopeful that we can raise a respectable start while Verónica continues to look into student loans, grants, and even potential co-signers. As a DREAMer, Verónica is not eligible for many programs such as loan pay back programs for caring for the underserved, the same population she is seeking to serve.
</p>

<p>Regardless, Verónica is determined to make her dream a reality and we are determined to help her. The benefit to the community of having a bilingual, bicultural provider cannot be overstated. The last year has demonstrated the utter importance of healthcare providers at a time when the field is plagued by burnout.
