<div>Our family is facing an overwhelming crisis. My husband, Tim, a devoted father to one child and our primary provider, was involved in a catastrophic car accident on his way to work last week. He has been in the ICU in a minimally conscious state since, and was recently diagnosed with extensive diffuse axonal injury via MRI. Diffuse axonal injury is the most severe form of traumatic brain injury, where brain tissue shifts and nerve fibers (axons) are sheared across widespread areas of the brain, and is akin to shaken baby syndrome. He also has a fractured vertebra in his neck.

<div>There is no cure for diffuse axonal injury. Damaged axons cannot regenerate; the hope for recovery lies in the brain’s neuroplasticity—the ability to create new pathways—through intensive, long-term rehabilitation.

<div>The recovery process can be long and arduous, taking 1 to 2+ years of physical, occupational, speech, and cognitive therapies. It can result in a persistent vegetative state in the worst-case scenario, or severe cognitive, physical, and emotional challenges, including memory loss and loss of motor function. Though Tim will unfortunately never fully recover to 100% of who he was before his injury, we’re hopeful his “new baseline” is as close to it as possible.

<div>On May 26, 2025, Mark’s life changed in an instant. A tragic fall while working as a self-employed house painter left him with devastating injuries: a fractured vertebrae, a concussion, a skull fracture, multiple broken bones, and damage that required thoracic spinal fusion surgery to stabilize and protect his spine with metal rods and screws. His recovery will be long, painful, and uncertain.

<div>Now, after surgery, Mark faces months of painful rehabilitation, over a year of healing, and a future that looks far different from the one he imagined. His future, once filled with plans and purpose, has been turned upside down.

<div>Since he was just 10 years old, Mark has always worked. He started with a shoeshine kit his father gave him, shining shoes on busy sidewalks in his neighborhood. He spent his life providing for his family with his own hands, painting houses, climbing ladders, and working hard. But now, the same hands that built his career must adjust to a new reality. With limited mobility in his upper back, Mark can no longer do the work that sustained his livelihood. His ability to provide for his family has been taken away in a matter of seconds.

<div>But Mark isn’t just a hardworking man; he is the heart of his family. He is the love of Kim’s life, a devoted father to his daughter, two sons, and his bonus son. He is a proud grandfather to Zeke, Ender, Alissa, Caius, Naomi, Amirah, and Inara, seven little lights of his life who adore their grandpa.

<div>We are asking for your help, for your kindness, for your generosity. Mark will need support with medical bills, rehabilitation, and day-to-day expenses as he navigates this painful journey. We are praying that he won’t suffer long-term complications like chronic pain, arthritis, or hardware failure. He will have to reimagine his future, find work that suits his new limitations, and change the way he lives. Even the simple things he took pride in doing, like gardening and trimming his own trees, are no longer possible.

Help Mark Rebuild After Tragic Fall

On October 3rd, we unfortunately received bad news. The PET scan and bone marrow biopsy results came back that the cancer is still there (but is responding to treatment) and Mark will have to start chemotherapy again, this time with a new chemo regime and a referral for a bone marrow transplant. Mark will be off of work for over a year this go around. We are scared but hopeful.  <br /><br /><br />We became new parents 2 weeks ago to a beautiful baby boy. I am off work recovering and working to finish my Respiratory Therapy program and receive my license hopefully in the next month.  We've had to use our entire savings, and have had family members  help us. I thought we'd be ok and that Mark would be fine. But we are truly needing help now, and it is really humbling to have to set up a go fund me page, but we need help to make it through the next year of chemo and treatment. <br /><br />Anything would help us! Donations would be used towards our medical bills, rent, utilities, groceries, and baby needs.<br /><br /><br /><br /> Please read our story below...<br /><br />Earlier this year my husband Mark was diagnosed with stage 4 Lymphoma. What we thought were flu like symptoms turned out to be cancer. It completely flipped our world upside down. We had just found out we were expecting our first baby when we got the news. So we had to put our excitement on hold and gear up for the fight of our lifes. <br /><br />A bone marrow biopsy confirmed that mark had two forms of lymphoma. And 70% of his bone marrow had been affected. The doctor advised we start chemo ASAP. So the following Monday (April 3, 2018) Mark was started on a chemo regime called R-CHOP.  It was an aggressive form of chemotherapy that he would get every 3 weeks for a total of 6 chemo sessions and then be re-evaluated to see if it worked. Each cycle he received this chemo via an IV and into his brain and spinal column via a lumbar puncture which took a toll with each subsequent treatment.  <br /><br />We were scared, sad, angry, and frustrated. But with nothing to do but fight, pray, and trust our medical team, that’s what we did. We said our prayers and gave it to GOD! Some days were easier than others. And some days it felt like the world was caving in on us. We spent many days and nights at the hospital for chemo treatments, lumbar puncture appointments, lab tests, surgery, and baby appointments, it felt like we lived there. On July 26th, Mark received what we thought was his last chemotherapy session. We were excited to finally start getting our life back on track. Mark's fight to beat Lymphoma

Change is coming! We’ve had nearly ten years in our original Redlands location. Sadly, we are being evicted at the end of the month without cause or proper notice. The landlord has big plans for our little red building, and after a year of nearly no communication, we recently found out that we will be forced to leave by the end of the month. We’ve had such great memories and experiences over the years, and we’re only looking forward to making more in the future. We are working very hard at the moment on a new location in downtown, while also working very hard on our locations in the Sprouts shopping center in Redlands and the Food Lab in Riverside.  We need your support to make these unexpected changes go as smoothly as possible. It’s always warmed our hearts to see so many people drinking Augie’s coffee and enjoying the spaces that we try so hard to make enjoyable.
