<div>On the Fourth of July, what started as a severe storm turned into a nightmare for one of my closest friends, Becca, and her family.

<div>A tree fell onto a power line, causing a transformer to explode and ignite a fire in the basement while no one was home. Thankfully, firefighters rushed over and were able to put it out before their entire house was engulfed.

<div>While the fire was contained to the basement, the damage was not. Toxic smoke and soot spread throughout the entire home, contaminating and destroying nearly everything they own. Their house is no longer safe to live in and must be completely gutted and rebuilt, a process expected to take at least a year.

<div>This is a heartbreaking reminder that you don’t have to lose your entire house to lose your home. Even a “contained” fire can take away a family’s livelihood in an instant.

Support for the Walker Family After Devastating Fire

<div>Hello! Although my dad, Troy Boyer aka The Cuse Candyman, might give me some flack for making this account, I feel a little help may alleviate a lot of stress that comes with the very scary diagnosis he received.

<div>My dad is a hard worker and has always put everyone else above himself, from his immediate family to his extended Cuse family to his OCWA family. My dad suffered from a heart attack which caused irreversible damage. The doctors aren't sure what led to what, but we do know he has CHF, also known as chronic heart failure. The scarier diagnosis, though, is kidney failure. He originally was told he would have to start dialysis within the year, but after his last appointment, they informed him that he will need to start dialysis immediately. Today, 1/11/25 he had his two dialysis catheters put in! He is home currently and recovering. He is a candidate for a kidney transplant, but we know he could be on the list for a while. The goal is for him to get a new kidney, whether that be from family or another donor. However, his recovery is going to be a LONG recovery. It’s a possibility he will have to medically retire. He is currently as I type this getting two separate ports put in for dialysis. He is very worried and I certainly appreciate all the support he has received!

Support Cusecandymans fight against CHF and kidney failure!

<div>On early Sunday morning, May 15th, a shooting occurred outside one of the most popular student bars in Syracuse; Orange Crate Brewing Co. With it being graduation weekend, the scene was packed with students, recent graduates, family, and friends all celebrating their achievements. Shane Manley was working security and his selfless actions prevented what could have been a much worse situation after a dispute between two individuals erupted outside of the main entrance. Shane intervened and kept these individuals from entering the facility with a handgun. He was shot once in the stomach and was rushed to the hospital<span style="font-size:1.0625rem;"> where he underwent emergency surgery. He is currently waiting on a second surgery, and we are hopeful that he will be okay.</span>

<div>Shane is a coach, friend, mentor, talented MMA fighter, and jiu-jitsu practitioner. He provides training for underprivileged youth in the Syracuse community. Shane works security at Upstate University Hospital and Orange Crate Brewing Co.

<div>Shane grew up in Upstate NY and continues to give back to his community in every way possible. He is always willing to lend a hand and asks for nothing in return. On Sunday, April 10th, a large house fire took place within the 900 block of Ackerman Avenue, an inferno which could be seen from blocks away and resulted in 50 firefighters reporting to the scene. Our close friend from college, Andrew Mark, known by his friends as “Zee,” lived in the attic of this building, and was the main victim of the fire. As a result of the fire, he lost almost all of his personal belongings, and even more tragically so, the life of his dog, Louis.<br /><br />Andrew is a recent Fall 2021 ESF graduate who is preparing to enter the job market following the conclusion of his lease. He was a member of the ESF soccer team during his time as a student, and is regarded by his friends as a kind, generous, and loving person. This love he had was extended to everyone he’s crossed paths with in life, but none more than his dog Louis. Originally from Trinidad and Tobago, Zee has many times regarded Louis as the closest thing he has to family in the country, as his family still resides in Trinidad and Tobago. <br /><br />Louis, a bulldog, was a kind and zany dog, well-known for his active personality and affinity for making friends wherever he went. In this time of need, Zee has found himself in a situation of immeasurable loss, having lost his best friend in life, along with clothes, electronics, sentimental items, and his home. In this overwhelmingly sad time, we’re asking members in and outside of the Syracuse community to open their hearts and help Zee begin to put it all back together in the face of tragedy. With your contributions, we can help Zee find a new place to live, a new set of clothes to wear, essential items for future employment such as a laptop, household essentials such as pillows, towels, and bed sheets, and most importantly of all, provide a reminder that his friends and family have his back.

**Trigger warning -- sexual assault**<br /><br />For many sexual assault survivors, the road to justice is not fair.<br /><br />My little sister Catherine, who most of us know as Katie, was assaulted after a fraternity party.<br /><br />They tried to silence her.<br /><br />My little sister went to the police.<br /><br />They didn’t listen to her.<br /><br />My little sister went to the Onondaga County District Attorney’s office to seek help.<br /><br />They disregarded her.<br /><br />My little sister shared her story on social media.<br /><br />They tried to silence her.<br /><br />A chemical engineering student, Katie’s dream was to embark upon a profession to advocate for safe consumer products; my little sister has always looked to support others. Now, locked in a legal battle with her assailant, my little sister needs your help to make sure her story is heard and that she is not penalized for speaking out about her experiences.<br /><br />After Katie was assaulted, she followed every step to achieve justice through our criminal justice system but was disregarded and dismissed. Although she was told by law enforcement that there was an “absence of physical evidence” and her criminal case would not proceed, it turns out that the torn and bloody clothing she submitted with her rape kit was never fully tested or examined.   When the legal system failed her, Katie turned to the University Title IX process, and after a full investigation, the University expelled Katie’s assailant. Inspired by the #MeToo movement, Katie then spoke out against her attacker on Facebook. Her story immediately gained traction, shared by hundreds and "liked" by thousands.<br /><br />Her story gave voice to those who had yet to find it. Still, it also sparked worldwide condemnation – petitions from strangers to expel her from school, death and physical threats, and ultimately a $6 million lawsuit in the federal court system for "defamation" brought by her abuser.<br /><br />My little sister’s sexual assault, as well as the retaliatory lawsuit against her merely for speaking her truth, has come at a profound cost to her and our family. Katie only wanted to tell her story, shed light on the systemic injustice for sexual assault victims that she experienced, and empower other survivors while helping herself heal. But now, our family finds itself at this juncture – having incurred hundreds of thousands of dollars of legal bills, we now must ask for<span style="font-size:1.0625rem;"> your support to defend our little sister in her fight for justice.  And we hope and believe justice will come.  In fact, discovery in this lawsuit has revealed that there was male DNA on Katie’s underwear, and further private testing that our family has pursued has identified sperm and male DNA on the other clothing she was wearing when she was assaulted.  As painful as it is to revisit and re-litigate the brutal assault she experienced, we are hopeful that Katie not only will be able to defeat the meritless defamation and other claims brought by her abuser, but also that she will obtain the validation and justice that she has been seeking and deserves.</span>

Justice for Katie

My name is Morgan and I am a full time college student and a part time worker at saratoga olive oil. I just recently lost everything in a house fire that completely destroyed my house and everything that I had. I’m looking to raise some money to help with getting back everything I need to be able to work and continue school.

<p>On August 9th, while my brother Daniel was on a weekend trip in Lake Sunapee with his friends from Syracuse University, he suffered a tragic injury to his dominant right hand after a wake boarding accident. He was quickly airlifted to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Hospital where he underwent emergency surgery on his hand. Fortunately, the surgeons were able to save his thumb and protect his wound on his palm from becoming infected, however Daniel is left without his four fingers on his right hand. He underwent a second surgery before being discharged and transferred to the Hospital of Special Surgery in New York City. There he will undergo two to three more surgeries to rebuild part of his palm that he lost. After these surgeries, Daniel will have to undergo various therapies to help him adapt to this injury. In addition, Daniel will explore the options of further surgeries for the reconstruction of the hand and fingers and/or prosthesis. <br /><br /><br />Daniel is a 20 year old Syracuse University Student in the Visual Performing Arts department studying acting. Daniel is from Sea Cliff, NY on Long Island and has always had an active life growing up. He has played many sports, performed in plays at his local theater group, and has been involved in various charity events on Long Island. Daniel attended the Waldorf School of Garden City growing up, and afterwards the Long Island Lutheran High School. At Syracuse, he is a apart of the fraternity Psi Upsilon where he’s involved with various philanthropic events.<br /><br /><br />Daniel has always been an inclusive, helpful and well-liked human being. He’s always made a positive impact on anyone he meets. He has always been very determined with any task that’s been set before him including this difficult situation he has been faced with. <br /><br />Everyone who knows Daniel knows that he will without a doubt be able to push himself through this injury, but unfortunately he will not be able to do so without incurring numerous medical expenses. Daniel has always cared deeply for his family and has been worried about the medical costs for rehabilitation since his tragic injury. To help Daniel not be mentally burdened with the thought of paying for his medical bills, we are asking the public for their support.
