She was riding her EUC on the Santa Ana River trail and missed a turn that sent her down a rocky cement embankment that has injured her to the point that we have concerns about her pulling through. <div>He'd left his house just over an hour before what came next: a tragedy unfolding, in real time, in Gerlach- the place where people wait for October, because that's when things return to the quiet stolen over the course of Summer. He was at the office, around the corner from his home as dinner time neared when a concerned, local friend called him on the phone to inform him that his house was on fire. The first thing he did after arriving to his house was an attempt to go inside (before emergency personnel arrived) hoping to save his decades-long cat companion.

<div>Shortly thereafter, the town heard explosions as (presumed) propane tanks gave way to the heat. By the time most of us in town arrived, the fire department was already on site and the damage was immeasurable. At least two hours after the fire had been spotted, it still was incapable of being fully extinguished. Community members sat with Taz as he watched all of his earthly belongings turn to ash.

<div>Hi everyone!!! My name is David Miles Jr. but on the playa at Burning Man I'm known as "The GodFather". In San Francisco, I'm known as the "GodFather of Skate". I love roller skating. I have been bringing the roller rink to Burning Man for 20 years now. From its humble beginnings in 1999 to now in 2023, we have worked to make the rink better, to bring better roller skates, improve the rink floor and lighting and present a fun, exciting skating experience on the playa just like the experience we present in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park.

<div>As Burning Man has evolved over the years, the Black Rock Roller Disco has evolved as well. We have a wood floor that we maintain and upgrade every year. Each year we have to replace some of the boards and bring in more skates. As we approach Burning Man 2023, we want to make the rink bigger and we want to have the rink floor shaded for daytime roller skating.

<div>This year we plan to bring in a truss system where we can put shade over the entire rink floor area. This will make what is a fantastic night time possible in the daytime. We tried this before and it was successful, but for the past three years we've built roller rinks with shade at Liberation Park in Oakland Ca. (in the photo above) and at the Electric Daisy Carnival (EDC) in Las Vegas. We've learned to build this to withstand the winds and make it so people can skate even in 100 degree weather. However, making this happen will cost money so I am appealing to you to help me.

Throwing Shade on the Black Rock Roller Disco

<p><img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/51042684_159952426728931_r.jpeg" alt="51042684_159952426728931_r.jpeg" width="100%" media_type="3" /><br /><br />On the night of August 19th, the CZU Lightning Complex fires overran the tower site that my wife and I own and operate on Empire Grade. This tower was host to the Alertwildfire.org tower camera, a second fire detection camera accessible to Cal Fire and the Bonny Doon Fire Team, three ham radio repeaters (WB6ECE, W6DXW, and W6WLS), an ADS-B plane tracking receiver, an AIS ship tracking receiver, six of the scanrad.io (formerly firescan.net) receivers, and a wireless ISP (Ridge Wireless).
</p>

<p>The tower was originally built in 1971, and withstood numerous storms, at least one lightning strike, and the Loma Prieta earthquake, but the guy anchors were melted in the fire and it had to be dropped to the ground a few days after the fire for safety.
</p>

<p>Due to its age, it wasn't feasible to insure the tower itself or the building at the base housing the equipment, which is now a cinder-block shell with no roof... all the electrical wiring and racks and radio equipment and standby generator have burned.<br /><br />Each of the organizations with equipment on the tower and in the shelter at the base will be raising funds to replace that equipment... but none of that matters unless I can rebuild the tower and shelter for them to use.<br /><br />Our estimate is that the replacement tower will be on the order of $20,000 and installation will cost about as much. There will be cleanup costs, permit fees, cost to rebuild the roof and electrical system in the shelter, and we've already spent $5000 for the emergency work to drop the damaged tower safely.<br /><br />I will provide regular updates on the cleanup process, planning/permitting, and construction - assuming we raise enough funds to get that far.<br /><br />For financial transparency: The radio tower property address is 125 Patrick Road in Bonny Doon, CA - APN 080-041-03 and is owned by Matthew Kaufman (myself) and J. Rebecca Jacobs (my wife). Our home and outbuildings were burned to the ground just a few miles away, and then a few hours later the tower site burned over in the same fire. All funds raised in this fundraiser will be used exclusively to rebuild the radio tower, shelter and shared site infrastructure (generator, racks, shared antennas) and not for any of our other losses. The funds will not be used to replace any of my hobby equipment that was at the site, nor will they be used by any of the ham radio groups for their equipment replacement. If we successfully replace the tower, we will continue to allow select ham radio groups and the Alertwildfire camera network to use the tower at no charge.

<div>This launch is big enough for Intermediate and above Paragliders with solid launch skills. But, it has gotten so bad, it is now no longer safe. Only a few locals are flying here. They do not have funds to rebuild this. Materials will be purchased, and the entire launch ramp will be redesigned and rebuilt.

<div>The soaring is fantastic, and you can land on Los Muertes Beach, nearby. From just 200 meters above the launch, flights past the downtown, landing on less crowded sand beaches. Only a few tourist pilots know about this amazing spot. I came up with the idea that we could get the funds and work with my friend Dan Dimov, a local, to rebuild and make it even better than before. Dan will help facilitate the rebuild when funds are there.

Mussel Rock webcam

<div>On Thursday, October 14, 2021, Lev Yashin Villalobos was electrocuted and killed, while helping to rescue a young paraglider who had crashed into high-tension power lines in the municipality of El Cerrito, Valle del Cauca, Colombia.
</div>

<div>Lev had climbed the 30-foot structure, and secured the young man with a rope, allowing him to be lowered to the rescue party below. The rescue attempt succeeded, and the young paraglider survived with injuries, expected to make a full recovery. Lev, however, died in the attempt, while his family watched on.
