They place immigrant and refugee voices at the forefront to advocate for their rights and integration.

<div>In January, Gabe returned from Costa Rica with an alarmingly high fever, excruciating pain, blinding headaches, and additional symptoms that left a full panel of doctors scrambling for the cause. After two agonizing weeks
</div>
<div>fighting for his life, tolerating countless tests, and leaving the hospital without a diagnosis, Gabe’s condition was finally identified as Neuro-Leptospirosis: a bacterial disease, which, if not treated quickly, can be fatal. Due to the delayed diagnosis, and his body's extended elevated temperatures, this unusual and rare infection left him debilitated and riddled with lingering, treatment-resistant symptoms, including brain damage, visual dysfunction (sensitivity to light and focus desynchronization), and hyperacusis (extreme sensitivity to sound to the point of physical pain). Our Gabe is now unable to function in the world, capable of only leaving home for doctor appointments.

<div>Gabe’s family has worked tirelessly to ensure that Gabe is afforded the best care, specialized medical teams, targeted supplements, and herbal support available. He makes frequent visits to an osteopath, chiropractor, neurologist, optometrist, acupuncturist, Chinese herbalist, brain specialist, and otoneurologist in hopes of recovery. So far, their collective efforts have shown some improvements in his condition.

<div>Gabe’s journey is a long and difficult one in which he is forced to wear sunglasses indoors and sometimes must ask for help walking due to dizziness. Only now, after four months, has begun to regain his ability to, if only briefly, read. Any attempt at mental exertion, such as simple arithmetic or problem-solving, results in immediate and excruciating headaches. It is the hyperacusis, however, causing one of his greatest difficulties. The most minute sounds cause electric shocks to wrack Gabe’s body, temporarily immobilizing him. At the end of a ‘good day’, he is exhausted. On other days he’s left feeling as though he has been gripping an electric fence all day long. Socializing with more than one person at a time is out of the question and has resulted in nearly complete isolation. A simple grocery store visit, driving his car, listening to music, cooking, and such activities are impossible; even bathing can be a challenge because the very sound of running water causes pain. It’s well-known that Gabe’s life force, mental wellness, and his very joy for life rely on the ability to move vigorously, prepare meals, make music, laugh, and share in the company of friends. This disease has robbed him of what he holds dear.

<div>Daily hyperbaric oxygen treatments have provided some improvements in Gabe’s cognitive function and visual issues, allowing him to attempt basic activities. While his doctors strongly recommend continuing these hyperbaric sessions to maintain his progress, the insurance company has refused to approve further treatments. Each two-hour hyperbaric treatment costs $350. Gabe will need them five days a week for a minimum of four months. The additional cost of hyperacusis therapies and supportive equipment will be close to $10,000. While the doctors claim that, with uninterrupted treatment, his hearing, vision, and full cognitive ability may return to normal in twelve to eighteen months, we can only hope these therapies will support accelerated progress and better results than predicted. Even still, Gabe is fiercely determined to regain his health and get back to living his life.

Help Gabe Cover Essential Medical Expenses

On the morning of Saturday, April 27, a fire broke out at <a href="http://moringaconnect.com/">MoringaConnect's</a>  processing factory in New Longoro in a very rural area of Ghana. The fire started in the dryer room, and smoke filled the room too quickly for the team to put the fire out with fire extinguishers, and the fire burned through the rest of the building before the fire service could get there. <br /><br />Unfortunately, the fire caused over $200k in damage, destroying the factory building, machinery, and $60k worth of moringa leaf powder that MoringaConnect was planning to move to Accra for export to the USA. Pictures and videos of the fire and its aftermath can be seen <a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipODOoZo8Bo6dHVz6B0g3PojwqIj6Pdi91CLXOuz8lghbHpMS5T6sQMguJzkMbmcyg?key=TmY4S1VVbnYybWNPbGtweUc5MV9XZkptckY1d0R3">here</a>.<br /><br />This campaign is to raise funds to help the MoringaConnect team rebuild their factory building and replace the machinery that is critical to their operations.  As of December 31, 2018, MoringaConnect employed a total of 155 people — 97 permanent employees and 58 temporary employees. Many of those people were working at the factory or the nearby farm and are dependent on the income generated from the factory's production, so we want to help MoringaConnect get back on its feet quickly!<br /><br />In 2018 alone, MoringaConnect sourced from 859 suppliers. In addition, 1,822 smallholder farmers, 44% of whom were women, received training in sustainable agricultural practices, advice on how to incorporate moringa into their everyday meals for a healthier diet, and financial literacy training through Village Savings and Loans Associations (VSLAs) that Moringa Connect helped to form. Since the company was founded in 2013, MoringaConnect has reached over 5,400 farmers and trained over 2,100 farmers. <br /><br />MoringaConnect's senior leadership and the Chief of the New Longoro community are all committed to rebuilding the factory and are trying to stay positive, but they cannot do it alone and need financial support. The BREATHE 2017 Fundraiser

Everyone smiles in the same language.<br />~Author Unknown<br /><br />"Skunk" is one of the most generous guys I have ever met. He’s also a talented welder and artist - he's often found creating intricate sculptures out of scrap metal at the Artisan’s Asylum.  As you can see in the photo, his teeth could use a lot of help. Due to all the work needed, we hope to pool funds to lend him a hand.<br /><br />As a doctor, dental school graduate, and owner of <a href="http://www.zzzdmd.com/" target="_blank">McCarty Anesthesiology</a> , I have a great appreciation for the appearance of people’s teeth. (I am a dental anesthesiologist, so I work to improve people’s dental health everyday.) However, appearance is not Skunk’s concern. The factors that matter much more to him are relief from chronic pain and improvement in his overall health. These are the reasons we want to help.<br /><br />My name is Patrick McCarty and I was introduced to Skunk when I was looking for a custom anesthesiology cart for my mobile practice. I need to be able to move my anesthesia equipment out of my van many times a day, as I treat patients at different clinics around Massachusetts. Unfortunately, when I went to have a cart made, I miscalculated the size I needed and I asked to have one built that wouldn’t fit into my van! We were bewildered by how to fix one that was nearly finished and much too tall. Thankfully, Skunk saved the day with his awe-inspiring welding skills and his great sense of humor. I was so thankful for Skunk's help and ultimately the great friendship that came out of the process.<br /><br />After we finished the cart, I asked Skunk about his teeth and he said they are something that have been a struggle for him. Skunk’s dental troubles started when his family moved after he got braces as a teenager. His orthodontic treatment was not continued, so his teeth became crowded and difficult to clean properly. This resulted in significant bone loss. Moreover, his jaw is small which makes dental work quite difficult. Unfortunately, Skunk’s dental health has been more complex than what can be resolved by the daily care and routine check-ups needed by most people. <br /><br />Skunk told me he would be grateful for any help I could offer. Since then, I have worked with a number of colleagues who have helped with his dental care. Skunk has often contributed by building their professional websites and giving them artwork in return. Even with their generosity, his teeth pose a number of challenges for an experienced dentist. Many of my colleagues have been hesitant to take on his potentially very complicated and expensive restoration work.  A strong bone structure is key to having a solid foundation, and working to improve it is not covered by most dental insurance plans. Outside of a dentist's fees, even when given pro bono, there are substantial materials and lab fees. We believe the costs may be more than $30,000 - even with the continued generosity of discounted and free dental care.<br /><br />Without your help, Skunk will lose his teeth sooner than a young person should. As a man in his early 40s with the energy of a 20 year old, Skunk has a bright future. He is one of the last guys who would ask for your help, so we decided we would ask for him. <strong>Kelsey Cannot Afford to Fight Fibromyalgia After Valentine's Day: Her 26th Birthday</strong><br /><br /><br />I will not be able to afford critical medical care for my chronic, incurable neurological condition after my insurance coverage ends on my birthday. My quality of life and ability to find work that will sustain my future medical needs depends on your help today. Reaching this goal will provide up to two months of medical care while I work to overcome unexpected obstacles and delays to accessing state insurance.<br /><br /><br /><br /><strong>How fibromyalgia decimates my life, <br />my daily fight to truly live, <br />and why your help decides whether I walk or crawl:</strong><br /><br /><br /><br />Cold winter light filters through your icy window as your morning alarm jingles, much too loud. You hit snooze, and tendrils of pain and chill clutch your joints. You're so tired; your eyes can barely focus on the screen of your phone as you text your boss that you clearly have the flu, so you'll be staying home. You fall back asleep, believing that if you just sleep it off, you'll be better in a few days. If only that were true.<br /><br />By the time the frost has melted from the air, the only time you leave your house is in passenger seat of the car that you used to drive, as your partner shuttles you from specialist to specialist. None have had an answer yet, just suggestions for more painkillers and yet another referral. You can't stay awake, and frankly, you don't want to be awake, because every joint, muscle, and body part that you can't identify hurts. Your skin feels like it is crawling with beetles or on fire, sometimes both. You can't remember conversations your roommates say that you had an hour ago. When you can think, you wonder how long it will be before you lose your job. Well, you can't even command your body to get up to make food, let alone contribute to a team. <br /><br />The world is grey and full of triggers to new symptoms. Honking cars and other loud noises that you once brushed off now make you jump; the world is an overwhelming cacophony of sudden movements. You keep looking for the reason behind your crumbling existence, even just a hint, just a pill to make it better, but it has been months. Everything you'd put your years in to has fallen to bits because you can't even read your email. You have begun to wonder if it's worth anyone's time to keep looking because there might not be an answer. Maybe they should just let you sleep.<br /><br /><strong>In June, you find out that you have fibromyalgia, a neurological condition not yet fully understood by medical science. It can be partially managed with medication. There is no cure.</strong><br /><br /><br /><br />This was my experience from January through June 2014. In less than six months, I went from organizing music events, volunteering, working as an executive assistant, and running my own graphic design and photography business to alternately asleep or dizzily stumbling in increasing pain and confusion. Once I received my diagnosis, my doctor prescribed medication to begin to mitigate my symptoms. Because fibromyalgia is still not understood, there is no single medication to treat all of its effects. It takes five different daily prescription drugs to bring me back to a passable level of functionality. Several of my prescriptions cannot be automatically refilled, so I must return to my doctor's office monthly to maintain my supply and have medication levels adjusted as my body builds up resistance. <br /><br />Most days, I appear to live a normal life despite the ambient pain and bizarre neurological phenomena that break through the medications, which I have been able to reduce through dietary supplements as well as mental and physical conditioning. I still have days when I wonder if I should go to the ER, but losing one day in a month due to a flare-up is better than having only one functional day in a month. Occasionally walking with a cane is better than crawling through my apartment because I'm too dizzy to stand up. <strong>Due to the daily medical support required, my restored life comes at a high price, which up until now, was mostly covered by my family's insurance. That life-sustaining coverage is about to end.</strong><br /><br />In August, my partner and I moved from Boston to California, in large part because the wet, cold climate of the Northeast aggravates my symptoms. For five months, we lived in a teardrop trailer the size of a large SUV with no bathroom while looking for work. During that time, I was able to succeed at a short-term job and regain confidence that I could be a reliable employee. Finally, we acquired a CA address and thereby the theoretical ability to access state services when my partner landed a better-paying job.<br /><br />Since moving out of the trailer in January, I have been looking for work and watching the days count down to my birthday, when I will lose my family's health insurance coverage. <strong>It has become increasingly clear that there will be a significant gap during which I will be uninsured due to unexpected obstacles and delays related to accessing state health insurance. I will not be able to afford any of my critical medical needs during that gap.</strong> Without medical care and medications, I will once again be reduced to an existence of bed-ridden pain and confusion, a condition that will prevent me from finding work that can sustain my medical costs and thereby perpetuate itself indefinitely.<br /><br />Since I was a child, my medical needs have been covered by TriCare, the US military's health insurance provider, but that coverage will end abruptly at midnight on my birthday. My late father was a veteran fighter pilot in the US Air Force, and it was through his service that his family received military insurance benefits. He paid a lifelong price beyond measure for those benefits, but they will not cover his daughter for life, no matter how critical her need nor the consequences of withdrawing those benefits.<br /><br /><strong>I will be financially blocked from receiving the medical care I need during the inevitable gap in insurance coverage, unless you can help me. I have no ability to pay out-of-pocket for even one of my medications or a single doctor's appointment. My GoFundMe goal of $7,200 will cover up to two months of my medical needs without insurance.</strong> Without your help, without medical care, my life will rapidly degenerate to endless days in widespread pain, unable to get out of bed and without the ability to even think whilst lying there. I will not be able to find a job to return my situation to financial sustainability if I cannot stand up to make it to a job interview.<br /><br />I'm about to lose everything that I have dragged back from the clutches of fibromyalgia: my mind, my ability to step outside and smell the air, the freedom from pain that allows me to conceive of calling friends and family members or just ask my partner how his day is going. It has all come down to the cost of sustaining my quality of life, which I will be able to carry on my own once I have a consistent job, but only if you can help to carry me through these next two months. Fibromyalgia Care

<p><img unselectable="on" src="http://3b4efb995be6c5c64252-c03f075f8191fb4e60e74b907071aee8.r12.cf1.rackcdn.com/926104_1389479640.9228_multi.jpg" width="100%" alt="" class="not-resizeable"><br><br>Rob and Libby Masek lost their home when the Hollis, N.H., house they partially rented was&nbsp;<a href="http://www.nashuatelegraph.com/news/1025619-469/two-adults-escape-early-morning-fire-in.html">destroyed by fire early Wednesday, January 8</a>. While they (and their landlord's one-eyed cat) made it out safely at about 3 a.m., most of their possessions are irrecoverable due to fire, smoke, or water damage. They are staying with family until they decide their next steps.  <br><br>For those of you who don't know, Libby and Rob eloped in October and this was their first home together. They never bothered with a wedding registry, and were pretty content with family hand-me-downs and the items they'd acquired independently over the years. Now more or less everything is gone. <br><br>So, if you ever thought about getting them a wedding gift, now would really be a lovely and very meaningful time to do so. <br><br>Please consider giving any amount to help them out as they start over.
