My name is Dusty Lee Nelson and I am an Oglala Lakota teacher from the Pine Ridge Reservation, in South Dakota and I have 3 children. I have been involved in Lakota language and cultural immersion efforts on my reservation for over 13 years as an immersion teacher, language advocate and practicing culture bearer.  As I accumulate knowledge and skills I share them with my family and the youth I work with across Oceti Sakowin territory.  <br /><br />Back in May 2024, my job ended in an abrupt manner and my roommate moved out of my rental.  I have been out of work for 3 months picking up contracts for Lakota Language events and such. Now that the summer is winding down and school will be starting, I am in the process of  immediately transitioning back to St. Paul to start a new teaching position in a Montessori school. <font color="#333333"><br /><br /></font> My son also has a unique opportunity to go to the same Montessori school that has offered me this position.  The Montessori Center of Minnesota community has warmly extended an invitation for me and my familly to learn about what it means to be part of a Montessori community. In addition to the job I will also have the opportunity to complete my college degree. <br /><br />This once in a lifetime opportunity will allow me to obtain experience that will lend to the making of a future D/Lakota Childrens House and create access for children of pine ridge reservation in Montessori education.I hope to raise enough money so that I can focus on my education and my children’s education.  <br /><br />I generally have 2-3 jobs and a roommate to make ends meet, however with the help of this gofundme I hope to focus on growing my skills in teaching and <font color="#333333">continuing to learn the Montessori method, teach and </font>speaking Lakota throughout the year with my children and community.<br /><br />1/2 of rental bills: $<font color="#333333">15,000<br /></font>Relocation Travel expenses: $5,000<br /><br />I have been able to continue to build myself as a future fluent speaker and educator for my community by the support of both the outer world and my friends and family on reservations.  I am always grateful for the help I receive when I am in need.  I hope to one day repay the support by giving back to the children through language , culture, learning and all through the love I have for my people. <br /><br />Pilamayayapi. Healing With Horses Camp 2024

<div>Hello family and friends. I am seeking help for my mother and step-father Gene. He is currently in an aggressive battle with oncology but has recently had other numerous health issues complicating his healing journey. My mother, Cindy, has been battling her own health issues and took some time off from work too address both of their health issues at the end of October.

<div>Her plan for a 30-day leave of absense in October quickly turned into something much longer. The day after Thanksgiving my step-father was lifeflighted to Billings Montana with septic shock. After being stabilized there, he was informed he needed to have his gallbladder removed when he arrived back in South Dakota. 
</div>
<div>They had hoped the healing would begin after being released, however, after some follow-up blood work and a checkup, Gene was lifeflighted to Casper WY with another infection. It was suspected that the infection was a carryover of the sepsis. More lab work was done, and although they repeatedly requested the gallbladder removed, the attending doctor refused, offering hospice care instead.

<div>My mothet refused to give up because the oncologist never spoke of "end of life" arrangements. She wasn't ready to say goodbye. 
</div>
<div>They both returned to South Dakota before the blizzard and my mother got a hotel room with her Christmas bonus "just in case" infection set in again. She fought to secure an appointment with oncology, where his bilirubin numbers were through the roof. The oncologist reassured them both that this was not an issue with his battle but something completely separate. 
</div>
<div>He was admitted, and ENDC was performed to find his bile duct was clogged with stones. This was cleared and the following day hereceived a gallbladder removal surgery. 
</div>
<div>They were released on Monday and made it home before the storm to find their refrigerator died during the blizzard. Food was limited during the storm, and my step-father began to vomit anything he ate. My sister thought it was because of the processed food he was eating. He began to not be able to keep any food down. 
</div>
<div>Monday morning came and oncology called to schedule his immunotherapy for Tuesday.  On Tuesday his blood work was off again. High white bloodcell count and low hemoglobin.  He had infection and was losing blood somewhere. 
</div>
<div>Now he is in the hospital with an almost complete obstruction keeping his food from reaching his stomach and awaiting news on what happens now.
</div>
<div>My mother, the main source of income, has ran out of leave. She took out a personal loan in December to help keep them afloat but that all went in to the cost of hotel, travel and necessities while supporting her husband. 
</div>
<div>4 hospital stays in 3 separate states and going on 16 days in the hospital and 20 days away from home is very expensive. Being in the hospital has limited my mom to do her crafts, her second form of income, so things are very tough for both of them.
</div>
<div>I am asking for help to keep them going as they work through all of these health issues. They are a very caring family that are always their for everyone else's. Please join me in supporting them through this tough time. Every little bit helps.

Customers and people complained to the employer that they don’t feel comfortable with me working at the cafe due to not supporting Kristi Noem, feel that I would spit in their food etc….since I am no longer a cook at the cafe I’ll be job searching in the meantime.

Recently, my mother, Una Yellow Bull Nelson, had suffered the loss of her significant other and her sister in the same year. These 2 deaths have impacted her life severely emotionally and financially . However, she was able to move her house back to the place where she grew up and finally begin to find her footing.<br /><br />Because there wasn’t any infrastructure in place my mom has spent her entire savings setting up here home in a place where she planned to retire. A septic system, electrical, foundation and water have all taken a huge amount of time, effort and money to make her house livable and comfortable. <br /><br />Just as she thought she finally made her house a home, she has suffered another great loss. This evening she was a victim of domestic violence and suspected arson. Currently the case will be under investigation, but my mom will never be able to recover her house or the money she poured into it. Unfortunately, she could not afford insurance. <br /><br />She only has the clothes on her back and will need a lot of support to recover from this tragedy. In a place where it is already difficult to secure housing, my mom is currently homeless and will need to begin to figure out what she will do next. <br /><br />Me and my brothers kindly ask for a donation so she can buy clothes and begin to search for temporary housing. My moms house burned down

On January 31, 2017, our son lost the love of his life. She passed from this world quickly and unexpectedly.  Mahpiya Wamniomni Win, Blake Sisk, was a beautiful soul that blessed my sons life and everyone that she touched. <br /><br />Many of our relatives and friends have asked us what they can do to help. My son in his only humble way asks that all of our family and friends help her family with her funeral expenses. Today four Osage Warriors came to take "Baby" home.  My son and our family will quickly follow. <br />Pine Ridge Girls School<br /><br />"The Pine Ridge Girls' School seeks, through an academically rigorous program grounded in Lakota culture, language, and values, to empower the young women of Pine Ridge, and to foster in them self-respect, a love of learning, and qualities of leadership to serve and shape their world."<br /><br />My name is Dusty Nelson and I am a life long resident of Pine Ridge, SD.   I am a graduate of Oglala Lakota College and an active Lakota Language learner.  I have a passion for learning and teaching the lakota lanuage and have worked as an immersion teacher for the past five years.  Presently, I  I have the honor of being the Language Arts teacher at the brand new all girls school on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation called, Aŋpo Wičaȟpi Owayawa or Pine Ridge Girls' School.  This will be the first year of operation, the doors will open to the students on August 30th, 2016.  I believe this school is essential in helping our young lakota women fulfill their roles as the future back bone of the Oglala Lakota Nation in the 21st century.  I take the role as their teacher and mentor very seriously and would like to be able to meet their needs as future college students and productive members of our community. <br /><br />As a new school we are aquiring the things we need through generous donations and volunteer work from community members. However, there are still a few needs that remain unmet.  The students of Pine Ridge Girls school work hard towards academic success as well as Wolakota.  They would be able to work more efficiently if we had access to certain materials,  So,  I am raising money for a computer, a printer, a projector,Lakota language materials, and age appropriate books.<br /><br />The computer will be used by to create lesson plans, keep up date on professional developement and conduct research for content.  The projector will be used in the classroom to add a technology component for presentations and demonstrations.  The books will go into our classroom library.<br />  <br /> The school would like to provide an environment that is comortable and well equipped in order to foster their learning.  In order for the girls to excel, they need to have the tools neccesary to be successful in their education. <br /><br />Your financial support will empower me as a teacher to <br />provide quality teaching and instruction to the students.  If we can meet our financial goal and secure the items we need it will allow me to focus on creating lessons and making sure that the content I teach is of high quality.  <br /><br />I am deeply appreciative of any and all contributions that will be made.  Not only will the students and I benefit from your generosity but also, eventually, the community in which we live.
