<p>My kids and their mom have built a greenhouse farm in Avra Valley and are beloved at local farmers markets for their amazing tomatoes and greens. <b>Yesterday, severe storms nearly completely wiped them out.</b> Both greenhouses are destroyed, as well as most of the chicken coops. Fortunately, insurance will cover some of the damage, but the age of the greenhouses prevented coverage of the structures, there are expenses in the cleanup, and temporary housing as their RV they were using to live on site was also destroyed. Help us rebuild so that we can continue providing fresh local produce to the community!

Small local producer Veggie Joy Farms Hit by Severe Storm

<div>This is a fundraiser for our good friend, Marco Garcia, his five-year-old son, and wonderful wife.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>On Saturday, May 2nd, Marco was in an accident while riding his scooter home from a construction side job, and shattered his femur, requiring surgery and multiple hospital stays.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>He is back home and recovering, but unable to work his regular job until it is healed, which may be several weeks. Additionally, the injury is not covered by insurance at this time.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Marco has helped me many times. Besides being a loyal friend, he is without a doubt the hardest worker I've ever known. He's probably helped you out, too!
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Right now, he and his family could use our help and support until he is back on his feet. Please consider sending some love his way.
</div>

Marco and his family need our help

<div>We are reaching out to you with a heavy heart to share the story of our dear friend, Hernan Castro, who is currently facing serious immigration charges that threaten his future in the United States. Hernan is being accused of immigration fraud, despite being a lawful permanent resident of the United States for over 20 years. His lawyer does not believe that he has committed any crime and is prepared to fight this case, but it will take some time. He was taken into custody with no warning and has been held in custody since May 31. His friends and family are doing everything possible to get him back home, but we need some help.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Hernan is being unjustly punished despite going through all the legal avenues of citizenship - he has been a green card holder for over 20 years and was trying to apply for full citizenship. This case highlights a significant issue in our current immigration system, in which individuals can be unfairly torn from their families and lives even when they go through all the proper legal process of immigration, and even after living in this country legally for decades.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Hernan is not just an individual facing legal challenges, he is a vital part of our Tucson community. He is deeply passionate about mushroom cultivation, identification, education and ethical harvesting. When not researching mushrooms, Hernan contributes his time and knowledge to promote eco-friendly practices and educate others about the importance of cleaning and preserving our environment. His commitment to the community makes him an invaluable asset, and he deserves the chance to continue his important work and community building here in Arizona.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>To contest the immigration fraud charges and advocate for Hernan, we need the assistance of a skilled immigration attorney who understands the complexities of this case and can help navigate the legal system. The costs associated with legal representation can be overwhelming, often exceeding tens of thousands of dollars, and we are asking for your help.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Our goal is to raise funds to help cover attorney fees, court costs, and additional expenses related to his defense and detention. Every donation, no matter how small, will make a significant difference in his fight for justice. With your generosity, we can help Hernan return home to his family as soon as possible.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Please consider donating to our campaign and sharing Hernan’s story with your network. Together, we can stand up for justice and uphold the values of compassion and community that we cherish. Thank you for your kindness and support during this challenging time.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>This fundraiser is set up and managed by myself, Casiana Omick, Hernan Castro's partner. The funds will be used by me to pay for the needs listed above related to his detention and defense.
</div>

Help Hernan Fight Unjust Immigration Charges

<div>Hello, my name is Aurelio and my partner in life and in this journey is Morgan, and we are Muncheez. We started this dream 2.5 years ago. It has been amazing cooking and meeting so many beautiful people. We are not here because we want to but because <strong>we need help and support from the community</strong>. When we first opened our pop-up food stand, we were allowed to do many local events such as trivia’s, bingo, book club, game nights, movie nights, live music, etc., all at our favorite tap rooms, breweries, and Tucson local spots.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>In the last two months, Pima County Health have had an issue with what they consider an event. After many questions, they are now telling us we are ONLY allowed to do trivia with our events permit at these local places. One of the big issues with this is that the rules are enforced for some vendors but not others with our same permit. We feel like we are being treated unfairly and targeted. This has also <strong>caused us to get behind on opening up our mobile food unit</strong>. As you may know, there's only so many trivia’s days available for us to do. And has definitely affected us as a small local business. The impact of these rule changes mid-summer has put us in a pickle.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>By supporting us and helping us get to this goal, this will allow us to operate more consistently without the worries of it being an event or not. It would help us with the weather and being able to provide the best quality that we can offer.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><strong>Right now, our only option to keep Muncheez dream going is to get the trailer finished</strong>. With such little time and notice, we weren’t able to save up to finish the trailer ourselves. We were able to buy a lot of the stuff we needed for the mobile unit but we still need more for the trailer to be finished such as a generator, cold prep table, 3 compartment sink, deep fryer, electrical, and new permit. If anyone is able to help and or donate, that would be greatly appreciated. We have been trying so hard to get this going, but with Pima County changing the rules to only trivia it has really put us in a tough spot. Anyone that donates will get the name or Business name put on our trailer for supporting Muncheez.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Thank you guys so much.
</div>
<div>Sincerely, The Muncheez Family
</div>

Keep the Muncheez dream going, help us Fund Our Mobile Truck

<div>Hi everyone! I set up this go fund me to help out our Ry guy. This past weekend Ryan was in a pretty bad car accident and is going to be recovering for a little bit. He was t-boned by someone running a red light and pushed into a bus stop (thankfully no one was waiting there!). He’s doing ok, but with a broken collar bone and rib, he’s going to be out of commission for the next 4-6 weeks at least while he’s healing. This is going to make it difficult for him to repair all of those musical machines until he has use of both arms again. We’re hopeful insurance is going to help replace his car, but we’re pretty sure it’s totaled. We’re looking to help him out the next month or so to ease the stress of no work so he can focus on getting back to being a sick a$$ drummer. Anything helps and we appreciate everyone checking in!
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Love you all,
</div>

<div>Our hearts are heavy as we have learned that Blue Sky Organic Farms was hit by a hailstorm this week. The storm wreaked havoc on their fields, leaving them with a devastating 75% loss of their crops - a market loss of around $250,000. This isn't just a setback for them —it's a blow to the entire community that relies on Blue Sky’s farm for fresh, organic produce.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>They are in dire need of your support now more than ever. The future of their farm hangs in the balance. Your contribution now, as well as every purchase, every share, every sale could be the lifeline that keeps them afloat during this challenging time.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Coming together as a community, we can overcome this crisis and keep the spirit of Blue Sky Organic Farms alive. Please, stand with them and show your support as they navigate after this storm. Our community's strength is our greatest asset. #SupportLocal
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>We are aiming to raise $10,000, to help cover the ongoing costs of keeping the farm going over the next couple of months, while they have less product to sell. Please give generously. And please feel free to share this!
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>The hard work, perseverance, and care this family-run farm puts into nurturing the land, the produce it grows, and the community of all of us and beyond that benefit from its existence, make it an irreplaceable local treasure.

Blue Sky Organic Farm Hit Hard by Hailstorm

<div>Ray Dettlaff, Lead Driver for Sun Produce Co-op, has lost the love of his life to a lingering illness that took a sudden turn for the worse. Ray’s fiancée, Nancy Nispel, passed away late Monday night, May 29. Ray and Nancy’s love story is one of a kind: they dated each other in high school and then went their separate ways, only to meet up again two years ago. Thrilled at coming back into each other’s lives, Ray and Nancy were busy planning a future together, including their blended family of beloved children, grandchildren, and dogs, when her life was cut short.
</div>
<div>
</div>
<div>Many of you have met Ray, picking up local food at your farm, or delivering it to your door. We would like to invite you to show your caring support for Ray and his family in their time of profound grief. Aiming to raise $5,000 to cover expenses for laying Nancy to her rest, and also to help with moving and living expenses as Ray and his youngest daughter move out of the home they shared with Nancy, we have started a GoFundMe Page to support our co-worker, Ray.

Circle of Support in a Time of Grief

<div>Hey Tucson,
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>This week Parker &amp; Freddy's truck was stolen while they walked Tumamoc. What whomever stole it didn't know was that Suuzi the Isuzu doesn't leave Tucson. So the next day it was found on the sholder of I-19/Irvington with Sonora plates clearly on its way to the border.
</div>
<div><br />
</div><img class="m-text-editor-image" alt="" media_type="3" src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/72730543_1683313223511042_r." width="100%" />
<div><br />
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Whomever took the truck had no respect for Suuzi and
</div>
<div>"fried out the clutch, pressure plate, fly wheel, and transmission too. Drilled holes in both door and blew the starter."
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Breath Easy Automotive quoted them $2,200 for repairs.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>We are asking for your help in getting Freddy, Parker and Suuzi back on the road!
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>If you have been in Tucson longer than a few minutes Freddy and Parker have likely served you many hot/cold coffee/alcoholic beverages. They have packed the veggies into your Pivot Direct bags. They have been your dungeoun master/dance partner/drinking buddy.

Fix Freddy & Parkers Stolen Truck

<div>“Our Story”
</div>
<div>Cherilyn Yazzie spent 13 years working as a social worker, managing nutrition services for a public health organization for Navajo County. Yazzie realized, however, that recommending people eat healthy foods like vegetables and fresh foods doesn’t have much impact when those foods aren’t readily available on the reservation. After experiencing and realizing the inequity of healthy food sources on the Navajo Nation, Cherilyn and her husband Mike left the traditional 8-5 work week to, instead, revitalize traditional and agricultural kinships with the land and help their tribal communities tackle food access issues. So in 2018, Cherilyn and Mike created Coffee Pot Farms.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Quote: “It just came down to me thinking that maybe I should learn how to grow food myself, because if I'm educating, and we don't have food access, I need to know what the process just to grow a vegetable is, and then I can understand and put myself in that situation,” Yazzie explains. “And so that's kind of where it started, just wanting to grow something.”
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>“Disparities on the Navajo Reservation”:
</div>
<div>In an over 27,000 square mile reservation, there are only 13 grocery stores to serve over 150,000+ Navajo Nation citizens that live within the nation’s boundaries! There are also unusually high incidents of chronic diseases, like type-2 diabetes, because a lot of families have to drive very far to get fresh produce. Many households can’t even afford to drive anywhere because they are very low income and most are actually sitting below the national poverty line.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Like many households on the Navajo Nation, the owners of Coffee Pot Farms also struggle with inequitable access to fresh water and electricity for their house, and especially their farm! Mike drives 16 hours every single week to haul water from over 25+ miles away in order for the farm to have water to grow their veggies and use in their house. Coffee Pot Farms has had to adapt to life without running water by implementing different growing techniques like using a greenhouse, drip irrigation, and careful soil management. Although they deal with inequitable access to water, Yazzie hopes Coffee Pot Farms inspires others within the reservations to start farming their own healthy, fresh foods so that future generations will continue to be healthy, live long, and continue to share their traditions and culture.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>“Community impact”:
</div>
<div>Currently, Coffee Pot Farms is a 1-acre farm that is in yearly production, with a 35-acre plot that they plan to revitalize in the next five years in order to meet the growing need for fresh food from surrounding communities. Coffee Pot Farms continues to be Native American and woman-owned and located on the Navajo Reservation in Dilkon, Arizona. Cherilyn has served as the proud owner and Principal Farm Operator for the past five years. Coffee Pot Farms was founded on the belief that food sovereignty is the critical first step to creating healthy communities and healthy families. As a healthy food business enterprise, Coffee Pot Farms retails through regional farmers markets, CSA home-delivery systems, and as a local food supplier for other institutional and retail outlets, both on and off the Navajo Reservation. Some of their local community organizing tactics involve free local gardening workshops and joining coalitions to write and define food policies that work towards access to a culturally appropriate and healthy food system.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>“Production for community”:
</div>
<div>Average produce each month for Coffee Pot Farms is a whopping 1,500 lbs of food from January - October! Produce mostly goes to local families but they also service a restaurant in Winslow called Turquoise Room, a local Native chef from AlterNativEats restaurant, Winslow Council of Aging (a local senior center), Winslow Farmers Market, Hopi Community Supported Agriculture and they also feed themselves with the vegetables they grow, too. In addition to these community programs, they also are able to accept SNAP EBT and partnered with Pinnacle Prevention to do a “double-up bucks” food program so people using SNAP EBT can buy one, get one free!
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>“How we will use these funds”:
</div>
<div>$35,000 goes to a driller to drill a 600ft water well to the aquifer below the farm. With three different quotes for drilling done, they found this tol be the average price to drill a water well.
</div>
<div>$10,000 goes to purchasing a water pump that will either be a gas powered generator or a solar water pump; it depends on how deep the well goes to get to the water
</div>
<div>$5,000 goes to getting a stock tank to hold the water.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>“The goal and end results”:
</div>
<div>Donating towards this cause will help create access to water for their household and farm so they can grow more food for the communities they help. It will also help increase the capacity of communities they can help! Coffee Pot Farms would also like to grow produce year round and also are planning to increase the number of CSA memberships to 50 boxes! They have recently added a restaurant account in Winslow, The Turquoise Room.
</div>
<div>In the first-year after access to water well: “We will be able to grow more food so that our community and families can have access to nutrient dense produce.” - Cherilyn Yazzie
</div>
<div>In the first five-years after access to water well: “We want to increase the amount of producible acres at our farm. We also want to begin utilizing the old corn field which is 35 acres.” - Cherilyn Yazzie

<p>Marr’s truck needs some expensive work done to it in order for it to be safe and reliable.
</p>

<p>As a black, femme trans person, safe transportation is extra crucial for Marr to access their seasonal work in remote areas that require a dependable 4WD vehicle. It's also important for them to have a reliable vehicle to get around town.
</p>

<p>Due to the state of AZ no longer offering pandemic unemployment assistance Marr no longer has a consistent source of income and needs support to get their truck up and running safely!
</p>

<p>A general breakdown of some things that need to be done are:
</p>

<p>-Replacement of the upper control arms
</p>

<p>-The lower control arms
</p>

<p>-Rack and pinion
</p>

<p>-Upper ball joints
</p>

<p>-Getting an alignment
</p>

<p>Due to the rust that comes with a vehicle from the PNW, the charge for labor is estimated to be higher than normal.
</p>

<p>Marr is a sweet and loving member of our community who constantly shows up for their friends and loved ones. Let’s help this guy out!
</p>

<p>** Any additional funds raised will go towards additional less time sensitive truck work and mutual aid for other QT Black and Indigenous people. **

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed, citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”<br /><br />― Margaret Mead <br /><br />After 170 years, the 64-acre Voit Farm across from Woodman's east will soon be changing hands.  It could turn into a strip mall, a Walmart, or a sub-division; or it could remain as a natural area--maintained by the local community, in perpetuity.  Five months ago a thoughtful group of concerned citizens formed the grassroots organization 'Voitlandia'.  We are 204 people strong and growing, and we believe that control of this land should remain with the people, who will honor and preserve it as a natural gem of Madison's east side for generations to come.  We envision regenerative land use, net-zero affordable housing, Community Supported Agriculture, and wetland preservation.  There is power in numbers and this GoFundMe campaign will be used to expand our membership 10-fold, so we can collectively purchase this property.  Change happens locally, please consider even a small donation to help support this land preservation initiative.  More information can be found at voitlandia.org, we are so grateful for your support!

<p><strong><br /><br /><br /><br /> Help save La Indita of the Historic 4th Avenue ❤️<br /><br />Help us preserve the food of our Elders, and keep legacy alive so that we may pass it on to our children. With a deep belief that natural food is the key to a healthy life and should be accessible to all, Maria Garcia opened La Indita Restaurant downtown Tucson in 1983. Combining her ancestral Tarascan recipes from Michoacan and those she learned on the Tohono O’Odham Reservation, the restaurant was a success. A couple years later the restaurant relocated in 1985 to the historic 4th Ave where it has been family owned and operated to this day. Just as the bright and traditional indigenous artwork covering on the walls of La Indita are a testament to Maria’s love of her heritage, so are the numerous articles highlighted not only the success of the restaurant but Maria’s strong activism. La Indita Restaurant has become a community resource for progressives, not only in Tucson, but internationally. Hosting countless community events and fundraisers, Maria‘s passion to provide for others in need continues by support of the restaurant.<br /><br /> When you walk through our old wooden door, the food you smell is a gift from our Grandmothers to you. For almost four decades, we have been honored to share the soul of Tucson Cuisine on the Historic 4th Avenue Strip. <br /><br /> In August, we found out that our neighbors will be expanding. In two months, we are being pushed out of our building by this expansion. Due to the pandemic, we have not been able to save funds to move to a new building, and our legacy is at great risk from being destroyed. We want our children, and their children to be able to give the gift of true Tucson Elders cuisine.  Our food and restaurant is the food of this land’s Elders-Tohono O’odham and Mexican. It has lasted through tough times before, and we humbly ask that you help save it for the future generations to come. </strong>

</p>

<p><strong><br /><br /> How funds will be used:<br /><br />Our funds will initially be used to be able to secure a new location and move our restaurant to this new location. As a family run restaurant, most employees are family and or close friends, who have sacrificed much of their own time, energy and money to get us through this last year. Again, this is our Parents/Grandparents restaurant. We will use part of the funds to ensure that our family can exist while we quickly move La Indita and rebuild at a new location, opening up as quickly as possible.<br /><br /> We hope to one day own our building, so that we can continue serving our community into the future with safety and security <br /><br />While the restaurant was being established, Maria’s work towards social Justice never ceased. In the early 1990’s her husband Joseph Garcia was elected Governor of the Tohono O’Odham People of Sonora, Mexico a tittle that still holds to this day although he is retired governor. With the aid of Maria by his side the two played a vital role in empowering indigenous population in Sonora and bringing the 8 tribes of Sonora together forming the “consejo traditional” Traditional Counsel fighting for recognition and justice. This group went on to directly pressure the state of Sonora for Economic equity for First Nations by means of direct action, street protest, and grassroots organizing. Their efforts eventually led to the creation of a fund council specifically designated for Sonora tribes, still operation to this day.<br /><br /> At La Indita, we would like to honor the many groups that have been able to have space and community at our table.. We thank you for your love, energy, compassion, and appetite. We are the Southwest Black Ranchers and our mission is to produce and distribute healthy food to the community. We are here to combat the current food shortage created by the COVID-19 Crisis. Our purpose is to deliver grass fed chicken, turkey, beef, eggs and natural vegetables directly from the farm to your table. Our proteins will be grazed in the Southwestern State of Arizona in the USA. We will combat COVID-19 by ensuring your food will touch less hands, prevent trips to the grocery store, maintain social distancing, and most important, keep you healthy. Support us building our farm, to bring you natural meat and veggies; allowing you to Eat Fresh, Stay Healthy and Be Strong. If 20,000 people donate at least $20 together we can build the only black operated protein ranch in Arizona! Please Share!

When researching the Covid-19 Crisis and the effect on the food system, we found close to 90% of our beef supply comes from 10% of the farms (4). Covid-19 has created a crisis in the food industry, closing plants, and disrupting our current system. Smaller American farms make up 90% of the beef industry and only provide 10% of our beef. By increasing the number of small to medium sized farms we will bring diversity, helping ensure the availability of  food. The food shortage is also making people rely heavily on processed foods, which is not good for our health. We need fresh food to stay healthy and fight Covid-19. This is the reason we need people to support this farm and all other small farmers at this time.

From the peak of black farming in 1920 to present day, the number of black farms dropped from 925,000 to 45,000 (1). Over that time the biggest hit came with the abolition of the Civil Rights Department of Agriculture in the 1980’s. During this time lending to black farmers was only 51 cents to every dollar lent to white farmers. The effect created a 30% decrease in black farmers from 1982 - 1987 bringing the total down to 1.5%  of total US farms(2). We must acknowledge and learn from past discriminate practices and institutions which locked black farmers out of the markets, took their land and even their lives (3). The state of Arizona makes $431 Million from cattle each year and there are currently no black owned producer protein farms(5). We will be currently building the ONLY black owner/operator farm/ranch in the state of Arizona; distributing fresh protein, while opening the door,  paving the way and creating opportunities for future farmers.

Our vision is to inspire others to grow in the farming, ranching and agricultural community while providing additional sources for our current food shortage. We will bridge the gap from our past when successful black farmers were plentiful and make that our future. This ranch will be a positive place to foster peace, learning, development and growth. We already have 4 other families who are excited to come down to periodically visit, learn and work on the ranch throughout the year. We know there will be many more.

To ensure the future of fresh food we must look to the children of today. The children have become very disconnected from nature, our food and where it all comes from. This ranch will be constantly involving and educating youth about all aspects of the farm and animals. By educating the youth we will help develop the concept of farming to them, which also protects against future food shortages for generations to come. From our Family Farm, directly to your family table, Eating Fresh, Staying Healthy and Being Strong.  Let's fight this food crisis, change the future of food, build diversity,  and educate the youth; by Supporting this Ranch.

Only with your love and support can we make this happen.

The donations will go towards a well, pond, animals, structures, seed, fencing, refrigeration systems, butchering training, delivery vehicles, trailers, equipment, additional pasture, solar panels, a green house, an education center and more. We are building this as soon as possible, with these 12 pairs of hands and your support!

We will also update you on the status of our ranch on our
Instagram page <a href="https://www.instagram.com/southwestblackranchers/" target="_blank" class="" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">https://www.instagram.com/southwestblackranchers/</a> and
Facebook page <a href="https://www.facebook.com/4Southwestblackranchers/" target="_blank" class="" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">https://www.facebook.com/4Southwestblackranchers/</a>
So you to see what your donations are building!

Remember please share! If 20,000 people donate at least $20 together we will build the only Black Operating Farm and Ranch in Arizona.

Any and all donations are appreciated!

For a $500 donation a box a fresh vegetables will be donated and delivered to a family in need in your name, family name, organization, company, church or in the name of your choice!

Please raise awareness by sharing  our message of hope and diversity for the future of food and farming on your social media, to your friends and family!

We need your support!

We are the TransCaravana Collective, a small group of queer people in southern Arizona responding in solidarity with trans women and other LGBTQ folks in ICE detention.</strong> <br /><br /><strong>We run a small grassroots volunteer-led commissary fund in partnership with Trans Queer Pueblo, an LGBTQ migrant of color and formerly incarcerated-led community group based in Phoenix, AZ.</strong> We are continuing to raise money for a second year after a successful first to fund our ongoing efforts!<br /> <br /><strong><a href="../f/zyb568-support-trans-asylum-seekers" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The money we raised last year</a> has enabled us </strong><strong>to sustainably support over 82 LGBTQ asylum seekers with monthly commissary support, letters, and books, as well as emergency housing, medical, and food costs pre- and post-detention as needed.</strong> Before COVID-19, we covered gas expenses to visit LGBTQ folks in ICE detention up to four times a month, but visits to detention centers have been banned since March 2020.<br /><br /><strong>In just this past year, over 66 individuals have been liberated from ICE detention due to the leadership and organizing of Trans Queer Pueblo.</strong> With Trans Queer Pueblo's partnership and oversight, we have been able to fill a huge gap – economically supporting the trans and queer asylum seekers that Trans Queer Pueblo is led by and advocates for in their fight for freedom and dignity for all LGBTQ migrants of color.<br /><br /><strong>Commissary is a literal lifeline for incarcerated trans women and LGBTQ people.</strong> This was true before the COVID-19 pandemic and it is even more true now. The majority of folks we support are detained at Eloy Detention Center and La Palma Correctional Facility, two facilities with some of the largest outbreaks of COVID-19 in the country and a history of egregious medical neglect. Visitation has been banned at all ICE facilities, including Eloy and La Palma, since March 2020. The ban has completely isolated those detained from support networks outside. This is particularly dangerous for the queer and trans community, who are at heightened risk for sexual and physical assault and at higher risk for being put in solitary confinement – <a href="https://www.ohchr.org/EN/NewsEvents/Pages/DisplayNews.aspx?NewsID=25633" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">a practice the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights has labeled as torture</a> . In a hostile environment that does not affirm their gender and sexual identities, without a way to connect with community support, trans and queer individuals are in serious danger.<br /><br /><strong>The commissary funds we send to individuals each month are vital to their survival.</strong> Having money in their commissary accounts means that individuals can access better food and purchase medication and hygiene supplies that detention centers do not supply (such as adequate soap, lotion, toothbrushes, etc). Commissary funds are also the only way in which individuals can communicate with loved ones and legal advocates during the coronavirus pandemic, as folks in detention must pay per minute for phone calls. Commissary funds help ensure that individuals are not cut off from the outside world and can advocate for themselves in perpetually harsher and more isolated concentration camp-like conditions.<br /><br /><strong>This is a grassroots volunteer-led initiative so there are no overhead costs. Everything we raise goes directly towards Trans Queer Pueblo’s detained membership base. </strong>On average, we send letters and commissary funds to roughly 30 people each month, and each person we support receives a total of $40 per month. With this in mind, we have set our initial fundraising goal at $15,000 – enough money to send $40 in commissary to 30 LGBTQ folks in detention every month of 2021, plus a $600 buffer to cover mailing costs. Anything we raise past that will allow us to send people books, pay for gas if &amp; when in-person visits are allowed again, and cover basic emergency funding needs for trans and queer migrants pre- and post-detention as needed.<br /><br /><strong>These efforts are acute and emergent, covering basic necessities for safety and survival.</strong> <br /><br />For anyone interested in learning more about how to get involved or support the TransCaravana Collective with letter writing and sending commissary, please feel free to reach out directly at: [email redacted] [dot] com.<br /><br />For more information on how to support the comprehensive and badass work of Trans Queer Pueblo, <a href="https://www.tqpueblo.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">check out their website</a>!<br /><br />~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~<br /><br /><strong>¡Hola!

Freedom Summer '18

<p>Who we are!<br /><br />Arevalos Farm is a third generation Mexican American family located in Double Adobe, Arizona, a small rural community in the Sulphur Springs Valley of Cochise County.  In this area that is dominated by farming, the farm is one of the few farms that produces vegetables for local consumption.  <br /><br /> History!<br /><br />The farm was established in the late 1950’s by Gilbert Arevalos and was a pillar of the local community until Gilbert’s death in the 1990’s.  The farm laid dormant for a number of years until grandson Aaron returned home 4 years ago to breath life back into the farm.  Aaron had the belief that building the farm back to the days of old would be the start of the revival of his beloved community.  With the knowledge and help of his wife Marla, mom Joan, father Art, Uncle Don and Aunt Sandy, the farm has started to do that.  <br /><br /> What we do now!<br /><br />Since Aaron’s return, he has sought to bring back some of the old time varieties that his grandpa grew like Mexican June White Corn and Yellow Meat Watermelon, zoned in on what he calls the best green chile variety around, AZ 1904, brought greenhouses into the growing cycle and created his own hybrid of bean called Frijol Mechudo.  <br /><br /><br />The farm continues to be a part of the community through it’s school field trips, Fall Festival and farm tours, as well as expands its audience beyond the borders of its small community as one of the few existing family farms producing the highest quality vegetables around.<br /><br /><br /> The Problem!<br /><br /> Farming is not easy.  There are many factors that are beyond your control that can cripple a farm.  Aside from pests and natural disasters, the lifeline of the farm is the irrigation well.  The well has slowly been going downhill every year since it’s resurrection 4 years ago and after a consultation with a well company, it has been confirmed that the well is failing and soon it will cease to function at all.  So we are faced with coming up with the money to fix our well or kiss the dream of farming goodbye.<br /><br /> We need your help! <br /><br /> Well work needs to be done immediately if we are to have the well up and running to plant and get a growing season out this year!  Your contribution will go towards the complete rehabilitation of the farm’s main irrigation well.  Well work is not cheap and most times one cannot truly know how big their well problems are until it is pulled.  Given the age of the well, the likelihood that almost everything will have to be replaced is high.  However, this complete rebuild will ensure the future of Arevalos Farm for years to come.<br /><br />Help stop the trend!<br /><br /> Small farms like Arevalos Farm have and continue to die all over the country.  As the farms disappear, rural people move away and those who want to enjoy the country life move in and wash away their memory.  This cycle of migration changes the social fabric of the communities and contributes to this epidemic, which is running fiercely across the country.<br /><br /><br />That's why it is important for those who believe in small farms to support those in need.  Your donation means that our farm will continue to live on for another fifty plus years and be passed down to the next generation of our family. <br /><br /><br />Lots of people come to the country with dreams of starting their own farm, but they die off. Money needs to be invested in the farms that have done it for decades.<br /><br /><br />So please contribute to the Arevalos Farm Legacy.<br /><br />Check us out on facebook at <br /><a href="https://www.facebook.com/Arevalos-Farm-131938283621073/"><a href="https://www.facebook.com/Arevalos-Farm-131938283621073/" target="_blank" class="" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">https://www.facebook.com/Arevalos-Farm-131938283621073/</a></a><br /><br />Article by Edible Baja Arizona<br /><a href="http://ediblebajaarizona.com/growing-arevalos"><a href="http://ediblebajaarizona.com/growing-arevalos" target="_blank" class="" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">http://ediblebajaarizona.com/growing-arevalos</a></a><br /><br /><br />Hardships of farming<br /><a href="http://tucson.com/news/local/grasshoppers-feasting-on-southeast-arizona-crops-gardens/article_354e769d-072d-5972-a4d4-847b3f952ff2.html"><a href="http://tucson.com/news/local/grasshoppers-feasting-on-southeast-arizona-crops-gardens/article_354e769d-072d-5972-a4d4-847b3f952ff2.html" target="_blank" class="" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">http://tucson.com/news/local/grasshoppers-feasting-on-southeast-arizona-crops-gardens/article_354e769d-072d-5972-a4d4-847b3f952ff2.html</a></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /> <br /><br /> </p>

<p>The border is a strange paradox which extends <strong>1989 miles</strong> from South Padre Island, Texas to San Diego. We are going to have a look the border paradox, and we want you to join us on the ride. <br /><br />American Babylon is going to travel all <strong>1989 miles</strong> of the United States border with Mexico trying to open up dialogues about la frontera that are not always visible.</p>
<p>We’ll talk to ranchers and migrants and activists and dreamers and lawyers and border patrol agents and detainees. We want to search out the images and backstories and alleyways that aren’t being jammed into our newsfeed. <br /><br />The border is a place and no place at all, it’s whereabouts constantly shifting and morphing and flexing and breaking along human fault lines. The border is a problem and no problem at all, depending on who you are, and where you are. Information deprived politics are driving the roadmap of what to do along our border with Mexico. <br /><br />What we desperately need right now is more and better information, perspective, images, and dialogues about what is actually happening along those <strong>1989 miles</strong> on the southern border. We need these things right now because massive decisions are being made by the Trump administration about whether and how to go forward with plans to erect a "border wall." <br /><br />American Babyon will be podcasting and posting a constant stream of brand new photographs and videos and interviews. We’ll be shooting videos and recording audio landscapes and doing FB and Periscope live videos.<br /><br /><strong>We need your help planning this trip</strong>! 1989 Miles of People & Change

<p><strong>We are ready to grow. Please stand with us.</strong><br /><br />We started Flowers &amp; Bullets in early 2012 to build a movement that relates to the lives we've lived and the places we come from. We felt it was important to share our skills in farming, community organizing and art with each other. We are from Barrio Centro, which we see as one neighborhood that the city divided into two: Julia Keen &amp; Barrio Centro neighborhoods.<br /><br />Flowers &amp; Bullets blossomed into a sustainability and art collective that includes 23 families in the neighborhood. A few of our artists channeled their graffiti backgrounds into creating t-shirts to express themselves without the danger of being arrested. Then we expanded our sustainability component. We taught our community how to build backyard gardens, grow their own food, sell at farmers markets and eat healthier.<br /><br /><strong>In four short years, some of our achievements include:</strong><br />-Designing and running a successful t-shirt line.  <br />-Installing and maintaining 12 gardens in the neighborhood. <br />-Helping at the annual neighborhood fiesta 2 years in a row.<br />-Running an annual prickly pear harvest where we show community members how to harvest from the desert and generate and income.<br />-Hosting a yearly art show.<br />- a neighborhood run where we support ceremonial community Calpolli Teoxicalli. <br />-Building countless relationships with community members and business owners. <br /><br />We are ready to expand and continue to serve people in the neighborhood.<br /><br /><strong>Help support us realize our dream of creating the Midtown Farm!</strong><br /><br />Last year we came together with fellow neighbors to dispute a proposed sale of the only school in our neighborhood, Julia Keen Elementary School (closed in 2004). Penske trucking company sought use of the school for the parking lot. Julia Keen Elementary school was the heart and soul of our community and also the first school to be closed down by Tucson Unifies School District (TUSD) because of proximity to the flight path of Davis Monthan Airforce Base. At a TUSD meeting held on October 7th, 2015, we voiced our concerns that Julia Keen Elementary School represents much more to us than tar and asphalt. We were grateful when those plans were halted by TUSD and that the district was willing to consider an alternative solution in the form of a regenerative community space at Julia Keen. <br /><br /><strong>After many months of community outreach, engaging stakeholders, and working on a proposal we are proud to announce that the community as a whole took a stance. On December 13th, 2016 the Tucson Unified School District unanimously voted to lease the former Julia Keen Elementary School to the Flowers &amp; Bullets Collective and the neighborhood! </strong>Your contributions will support the revitalization of this space. Our plan is to work, in phases, the rehabilitation of the property (earth works, native/desert adapted plants, trees, murals, etc.) We will continue to work on our programs on a larger scale (now that we have a space!).<br /><br /><strong>Your donation will help us build our capacity to realize our dream of having a space to grow fresh food, educate and heal our community, create and share art, and support ourselves economically. </strong></p>
<p><strong>Thank you again!<br /></strong></p>
