Back in 2006 when our son was born he arrived in the world with his esophagus not connected to his stomach and needed several emergency surgeries and over a month stay in the hospital. The webcomic community rallied when they heard about the $10k billed we had after what insurance would pay and managed to more than cover that. I've been forever grateful, and try my best to help others when I can financially, or by boosting awareness to those in need.

<div>Recently, our son had been experiencing an fatigue and troubling feeling like he couldn't drink enough. One morning, he could barely get up, and we noticed that his eyes were sunken in and his skin color was very pale. We rushed him to the emergency room where after much testing, we were told that he has type 1 diabetes. This was a major shock, and gut punch to say the least. He had to spend several days in the hospital while they monitored him, poked and prodded, all the while he had to wrap his head around this new life he had been saddled with.

<div>Now we have been informed that after what insurance will cover for all the testing, hospital stay, etc., we again have around $10k that is our responsibility. And thanks to the way insurance has our maximum out of pocket set up, all three of our family would have to meet the maximum out of pocket to count.

<div>In 2016, I began to experience the symptoms of what would later be diagnosed as fibromyalgia: a chronic pain condition that causes widespread pain, brain fog, and chronic fatigue, and is intimately linked to complex trauma. Over the last six months, as my mental health has been in a prolonged state of crisis, my physical health has declined dramatically. I honestly haven't had pain flares of this intensity and duration since I was first ill.

<div>With so many weeks spent in bed, I’ve now also entered a season of financial crisis. In order to gain financial stability, and a life, perhaps, with less or even no pain, I must hustle. The reality is: I need time to rest, recover, and re-stabilize so that I do not reach a state of total debilitation.

<div>What's also become clear is that even on my best days, I have a limited capacity for work, and must allocate all of my time to creating content for my Instagram, as that is how I make my living. This leaves me with little time to work on projects that would bring greater financial stability into my life, including a YA novel I've been working on.

<div>And so I find myself here, turning to the magic of mutual aid and community care. <div>In October of 2025, I – along with my field director and friend Andre Martin and four other individuals – was indicted for my advocacy and protest against ICE and this administration. Our case, United States v. Rabbitt, is set to go to trial in Chicago federal court on May 26 and the result could determine the future of our constitutional right to free association. These charges are bogus, but regardless of the outcome, the stress, public scrutiny, and financial burdens of this ordeal have forever changed our lives.

<div>Currently, we are facing up to $250,000 in legal debt. Our lawyers are fantastic and we expect to win our case, which the government argued is a “spontaneous conspiracy” – that conspiracy being peacefully protesting outside of the Broadview ICE facility.

<div>As we and our legal team have said from the beginning, dissent and protest is not a conspiracy. After lengthy legal battles, the government dismissed the felony conspiracy charge just weeks before trial. But they did not dismiss all the charges, and we still have trial on the misdemeanor counts for intimidating, interfering, and impeding an ICE agent.

<div>If you are not familiar with myself or my case, I am a 27-year-old researcher and journalist who covers the far-right and ran for Congress in Illinois. Throughout my campaign, I was not just vocal against Donald Trump's secret police, but put my body and reputation on the line during protests. Even if you don’t know my face, you probably saw <a href="https://bsky.app/profile/katmabu.bsky.social/post/3lz6sxfky3s2t" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">this video</a> of an ICE agent throwing me to the ground last September. That is not what we were charged for, but it shows what the conditions at Broadview were often like for protestors.

<div>Andre is 27 as well, worked on my campaign, and has devoted his life to helping others through progressive advocacy, particularly surrounding the unhoused. We both love science fiction, petting cats, and cooking increasingly difficult recipes. We’ve worked in the nonprofit sector and progressive politics our entire adult lives – which is largely why we don’t have hundreds of thousands (much less mere thousands) of dollars to spare. We’re people with lives and futures and loved ones.

<div>Even if – or rather, when – we win our trial, our lives and futures will be left in disarray. The administration is using prosecution as a cudgel to ruin dissenting Americans’ lives through the financial and psychological burdens of our legal system. Times are unbelievably difficult right now, so I tried to avoid asking others for money, especially after many donated to our campaign after the indictment for our legal defense. That was a lifeline, but the costs have mounted beyond our expectations.

Support Silver Sprocket Shop Staff After Sudden Layoffs

<div>I’m Georgia, a queer disabled comics artist and teacher. I have struggled my whole life with chronic health issues, and undiagnosed disability (until the age of 35), making my work and finances incredibly unstable.

<div>On February 1st, I emailed my employer asking for an HR process to resolve issues with his behaviour. On February 4th, my employer responded by heaping intense and inappropriate praise onto me, and cancelling my contract citing incompatibility.

<div>With one email and no notice, I lost 50% of my income for the year.

<div>The communication between us that followed is disturbing, confusing, and ultimately a massive manipulation and abuse of power.

<div>Until this happened, I considered my employer to be a friend and trusted collaborator, as he has supported me through work and friendship as I experienced massive fluctuations in my health over the last 5 years. That relationship is irreparably broken, and so I am forced to prematurely end my other contract with him, which represents the other 50% of my income for the year.

<div>He has not faced a single consequence for his actions, while I have had my life brought to the brink of collapse.

Things Are Kinda Falling Apart

<div>"In April of 2022 Pete and I went to the emergency room in hopes of getting migraine medication for a relentless headache he'd been having. It had been a month of pain, nothing was working, and the health insurance from his new job still hadn't kicked in. Instead of a migraine, it turned out Peter had a large tumor in his frontal lobe. A craniotomy was performed to remove the mass, and he was diagnosed with grade four Glioblastoma Multiforme, a particularly aggressive and terminal brain cancer. Ever since, we've been navigating all of the changes and treatments as privately as possible. This might be the first time many of you are hearing, but if you know Pete, you know he is strong and stubborn and deeply uncomfortable with the idea of people bringing over a casserole or asking whether he needs anything. It's been isolating. Most people were beginning to relax their covid protocols as we were intensifying ours, separating us from our community. After radiation, months of chemo, and a trial drug through UCSF, the tumor came back in February. Another brain surgery and many more medications followed, but the tumors have continued to progress. Pete and I got married May 20th after more than ten years together. It was a beautiful day I will never forget. In the last year we took a few small trips, we had some hard conversations, we treated each other sweetly. Now things have changed again.

<div>Two weeks ago, July 27th, he had a large seizure that took the time I hoped we had left. He is in a stage that is a lot like dementia, here but not here. This is such a heartbreaking loss on so many levels as Pete's analytical mind, pragmatism, and sweetness kept everything blooming around us. I can't stop thinking about his recipes, his wines, his art, he was the keeper of so much of our history. He remembered every place we ever went, restaurants, freeways, and

<div>dates. The world suddenly feels like a much smaller place without the wisdom of this man I love so much. I'm not the only person reeling from change at the end stage of this disease. Pete is so well loved by his big family and many friends, having played in bands for years, operating his record label, working with Maximum Rocknroll for more than twenty years, etc., we've been lucky enough to have people rallying to offer the around the clock care he needs to stay comfortable now.
