<div>Equality for Flatbush (E4F) is a Black Lives Matter organization that has fought gentrification, displacement, and police violence in Brooklyn, NY since 2013. We have only two goals: to end NYPD murders and to stop the displacement of low-to-middle-income people from Brooklyn, NY. Led by Black and Brown lifelong and longtime New Yorkers, E4F believes in the abolition of the police, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and prisons.

EMERGENCY EVICTION RELIEF

<div>Earlier this month, Salvanita and Moses Foster got a phone call. Someone was changing the locks on the Bed Stuy home they purchased in 1999 and had lived in until a 2019 fire. Their possessions were being thrown from the windows into the trash, the neighbor said. They raced over to the house at 470 Willoughby Avenue on Monday, November 7 to find men discarding their most personal items, including passports and family photographs. “My stuff is gone, all my documents, all the important things, my furniture, everything is gone,” Salvanita said Thursday, November 10, as neighbors gathered outside the house in a show of support for the couple and their son, Vernon. “When we came and saw them throwing out the stuff we said what is this, nobody told us nothing, nobody said we had to come and get our stuff or the building was sold, nothing. We didn’t know what to do.”

<div>The house at 470 Willoughby Avenue has been boarded up since a 2019 fire. Although the family wasn’t living in the house at the time, Salvanita said, it is still their home. She and Moses said they called the police five times to report what was happening, but no one turned up. “We stayed here for hours. We were here from 2:30 p.m to 7:30 p.m. We went to vote and came back waiting still for the police,” Salvanita said. All they could do was watch.

<div>According to the Fosters, the men who were throwing out their belongings said they’d been directed by a person who claimed to be the owner of the house to clear out everything. But in the Fosters’ eyes, the house belongs to them. Foreclosure rescue schemeThe incident follows a twisting 14-year-long legal battle the Fosters have been in to reclaim their home after they were, according to the couple, victims of a foreclosure rescue scheme.

<div>It is a story all too common in predominantly Black neighborhoods such as Bed Stuy, especially for elderly homeowners and immigrant families. 
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>In 2006, the family was at risk of foreclosure after falling behind on mortgage payments and allegedly sought the help of a mortgage broker named Roy Pembroke who promised to help the family keep their home, according to an affidavit by Salvanita. “We moved from the Virgin Islands and as American citizens we wanted to get our own home. We did everything by the book,” Salvanita said.

</div>
<div>Over the years, she said, they fell behind on payments raising two sons and having some tenants in arrears. “The gentleman who came here he said he was going to do a refinance.”Instead, Pembroke had the deed transferred to “straw buyer” Jeanette Bowles, and immediately had Bowles take out two mortgages totaling $831,725 against the house. Bowles agreed to reconvey the house back to the Fosters after one year, Salvanita said. Salvanita alleges Bowles received a $10,000 check at the closing, and the Fosters were given $67,000 to do needed repairs on the house. But at the end of the year, or any of the years following, the house was not transferred back to the Fosters. “She never came to this house. She never paid a mortgage. She never pay a bill, never pay the taxes, she never pay the gas bill. We do everything, everything concerning the property,” Salvanita said.

<div>In 2008, the Fosters filed a lawsuit against Bowles, Pembroke, the mortgage holders and others accusing them of fraud. Meanwhile, that same year, Mortgage Electronic Registration Systems, which was servicing Bowles’ loan, filed a foreclosure lawsuit against Bowles for failing to make mortgage payments.
</div>

</div>
<div>The Fosters have been in court trying to reclaim ownership of the house since 2008Bowles claims in court filings it was not just the Fosters who were victims in the scheme; she alleges she too was duped by Pembroke. Bowles says in 2006 Pembroke held a series of meetings at her church in Poughkeepsie explaining how to help people save their homes from foreclosure, and she agreed to help a family by signing a loan application and closing with Pembroke’s guidance. Despite being a widow whose annual income was a limited pension through her deceased husband’s employer, social security benefits and some interest income, Bowles “somehow was approved for loans totaling $831,725.00 to purchase property in Brooklyn,” a court document reads. Bowles says in the filings she was told she would not have to make any payments on the loan, which the Fosters would be responsible for, and she would sell the property back to them a year later — helping them save their home. She also alleges that a lawyer for the lender made several payments from the loan to Pembroke International LLC for $20,000 and to Countrywide Holdings LLC for $81,700. (Now part of Bank of America, Countrywide played a prominent role in the 2008 subprime mortgage crisis.)
</div>

<div>Brownstoner reached out to Bowles and Pembroke for comment but did not get a response. A contract canceled in late 2013, after years litigating the fraud allegations — while the Fosters say they continued to live in the home, rent out apartments in it and make payments on the house — the Fosters and Bowles agreed to settle the lawsuit through a short sale process where the Fosters would buy the house back for $640,000.

</div>
<div>In 2014, Salvanita alleges, she and Moses got a call from an agent at Century 21 who said he heard they were struggling with getting a loan and that he knew someone who could help. He introduced the couple to Mendy Segal.Segal allegedly told the Fosters he could help them save money by getting a short sale approval for a cheaper price, but allegedly said they had to drop the fraud lawsuit against Bowles to get approved by the lender. “Moses and I foolishly, without the benefit of our counsel, signed a stipulation of discontinuance with prejudice,” she said. Bowles then fired her lawyer who had been working on the short sale and hired Moshe Mortner at the advice of Segal who abruptly terminated the contract of sale, Salvanita alleges. She alleges this was done so Segal could buy the property himself. Around the same time, one of Bowles’ mortgages on the house was paid off, records filed with the city only this week show.
</div>

<div>In legal filings, Segal said “providing a legal referral or having an intention to buy the subject property are not sufficient allegations of tortious interference in contract” and “the claim that Attorney Mortner was ‘under the direction’ of Segal is mere speculation.” Bowles claims she hired Mortner because her previous lawyer was not passing on required information, documents show.
</div>

<div>In 2018, Segal won a lawsuit in which the Fosters accused him of interfering with the contract, with Kings County Supreme Court Judge Karen Rothenberg writing the Fosters “failed to allege Segal intentionally procured Bowles’ breach of the contract.” She also ruled Bowles did not violate the contract of sale by cancelling it, as the Fosters did not secure a loan to take over the house. Segal told Brownstoner the Fosters had made numerous false allegations about him, and he hadn’t had anything to do with the property for years.470 willoughby avenue exterior. Meanwhile, Salvanita was also struggling to keep up with the mortgage on a second home at 670 Greene Avenue and Segal allegedly convinced her to transfer the deed to a friend to secure a loan modification, court documents say. Segal — who, according to affidavits from numerous people, goes by the names Mandy Segal, Mendi Segal, Menachem Segal, Joe Siegel, Mendy Siegel, Manny Freeman, Yosef Friedman, Joe Friedman and Mendy Friedman under companies Luba NY or TMax Realty — allegedly then got the friend to transfer the house to an LLC he set up for $4,900 under the guise of a refinance.

<div>City documents show the deed was transferred to 670 Greene Holdings LLC for $4,900 in May 2014. There is no name listed with the LLC in Acris, but company records say Menachem Segal is the CEO. Segal said he couldn’t comment on the situation due to ongoing litigation.Salvanita and Francis have been in a legal battle to reclaim the house from the LLC since, which has run side by side with the legal battles over 470 Willoughby.

<div>Salvanita said the fights have left her more than $100,000 out of pocket in legal fees and have drained her 401K, which she said she needed this year after having a stroke and becoming bed ridden.“I’ve been to so many people, I write letters, I do everything. I tried everything that I can to get assistance and to get help and never get no help. All we’re doing is spending. I’ve spent my whole savings, right down to my 401K that I should have now because I took sick and I had a stroke. And I spent right down to my last bit trying to get help,” Salvanita said through tears at the rally.Moses added: “I go to everybody. I go to the congressman, I go to everybody that you can talk to and I’m just crying out for help. I’m crying, I’m crying out for help.”

<div>On November 1, 470 Willoughby was transferred from Bowles to 470 WBY Realty LLC for $1.5 million, signed for by Herman Silberstein. Just 10 days later, the Fosters were standing outside the house calling the police as their belongings were being trashed, locks were being changed and a security camera was installed on the home.“This is what they do, go along and prey on people they think do not have a backbone or what have you, but it’s wrong it’s got to change and you got to stop and you got to stop now,” Moses said. “I work tirelessly like everyone else to have the American dreams, day and night I work, sweat, over time to achieve my goals. My kids grew up here in this house from babies. I raised them."

Rosa is doing better, however, because hospitals in Bangladesh are overwhelmed with new virus threats, she has been sent home to prevent risks of viral infection. Rosa needs a heart procedure that cannot be performed in Bangladesh. Kazi is making arrangements to visit the hospital in Kolkata where Rosa was treated when she was younger and where she can be seen by a pediatric heart specialist. As we wait for Rosa and her mom to be granted emergency medical visas to India, we are anticipating additional medical expenses. We have increased the goal of this fundraiser accordingly. We will continue to post updates to this fundraiser as we know more.

Friends and loved ones of Kazi, Rosa's grandmother, are organizing this fundraiser to support medical expenses and much-needed urgent support for Rosa while she is fighting for her life in the ICU. As many of you know, Kazi has been an organizer, fighting for social justice in NYC, and globally, whenever possible for two decades. Rosa is Kazi's youngest grandchild and only granddaughter and undoubtedly is the light of her life. Rosa brings immense happiness and a breath of life to Kazi, her family, and the community around her.

<div>Over the years, Rosa has seen the four walls of a hospital room more than many of us would in our entire lifetime. Eight-year-old Rosa, who lives in Bangladesh with her parents and her older brother was born with a heart defect. However, we know one thing for certain that, Rosa, is a fighter. A young person should not have to spend their childhood in a hospital bed, her doctors, and her family members are trying to make sure she gets well very soon. On March 7th, Rosa was hospitalized as she went into heart failure, fighting pneumonia. She is bouncing back and forth in the ICU.

<div>Unfortunately, her health condition is not the only thing that the family has to worry about right now. It is also the cost of ensuring that Rosa receives the care she needs to keep fighting. Her medical expenses are increasing every day. We as a community can support Rosa by contributing towards her medical expenses as much as we can, also allowing the family to be completely focused on giving her the care and support needed. Kazi has been supporting our communities for years, it is our time to show the same love and support for her.

<div>It is with a very heavy heart that the Flatbush Residents against Maxx Properties are gathering financial support for our neighbors impacted by a devastating fire at 3400 Snyder Ave on Sunday Janaury 22, 2023.

<div>Since 2022, The Flatbush Residents Against Maxx Properties has been demanding mold removal, repairs, heat along with fire safety for the residents of 282 E. 35th St., 285 E. 35th St., 3400 Snyder Ave., and 3500 Snyder Ave.

<div>We are especially grieving over the loss of 13-year-old, Dillon Waldren-Dickson who perished in the fire and send our deepest condolences to his mother, family and friends.
</div>

</div>

<li>Repair the fire escape at 282 East 35th street that does not slide down.

<strong>"Hoops for Justice” was founded in July 2013 in remembrance of Shantel Davis &amp; Kimani Gray, young lives that were taken by NYPD. </strong>Dozens of young men and their supporters will assemble to compete in a basketball tournament unlike any other in the neighborhood this summer. They compete not only for prizes and prestige but also to stand for a positive vision of their community. This tournament was brought together by tragedy and now we want to bring the community together in celebration of Shantel &amp; Kimani’s life. It is time to bring the residents of East Flatbush together to stand united against police brutality. This tournament is dedicated to the young people of East Flatbush and to all families who have lost a loved one to police brutality. <br /><br />Help us raise $3,500 to put this tournament on.  Your donations will help pay for basketball shirts,  the equipment,  the park and sound permits,  food, the referees,  the DJ and the trophies. The father-son duo, Clarence Hardy Jr. &amp; Omar Hardy have received unjust treatment by the courts and now we are calling the community to help them SAVE the historic site<br />Another cultural institution in our community is at risk of being stolen due to deed theft and deed fraud. A recent court proceeding improperly names Clarence and Omar Hardy as "tenants" and 750 Nostrand 123 LLC, an organization backed by Mendel Gold, as "landlord". "We never had any agreement, contract or lease with the opposing party," says Hardy regarding the Civil Court action brought out against him. According to the court's case summary on August 1, 2019, Judge Cenceria P. Edwards grants a motion for dismissal submitted by the Hardy family following a bench trial which occurred earlier that summer but nearly four months later, the court's order mysteriously disappears and the Judge moves to side with the opposing party, violating the Constitutional rights and protections of the Hardy team. <br /><br /><br /><br />The most recent development in this harrowing tale of judicial misconduct, is the alleged sale of The Black Lady Theatre.  According to sources, in January 2018, the 3-story building was purchased in a tax-lien foreclosure auction - a sale in which the Hardy’s were never notified.  A look into the case files, reveals that the Petitioning Party previously wrote a letter to Judge Mark I. Partnow, to withdraw and render the case moot. This apparent ‘sale’ of The Black Lady Theatre “adds insult to injury,” said one public official referencing back to the demolition of the theatre’s sister venue, The Slave One Theater, whose land was recently purchased by an international developer with plans to turn the historic site into yet another hi-rise housing complex.<br /><br /><strong>WHAT’S NEXT? </strong><br /><br /><br />Clarence Hardy and son, Omar Hardy continue to fight for justice at every turn. The duo has already been successful in restoring the theatre bringing affordable, high-quality classes and entertainment to the community and honoring the vision of Judge Phillips (founder) by providing a safe-space for discussion, exploration and discovery, in the heart of Brooklyn. My name is Ditta Biggs, and I have been a resident of East New York ever since I left Jamaica more than twenty years ago! I have always been so proud to be a part of this strong and loving community. As a pre-K and elementary school teacher in Brooklyn's public schools, I worked with families in our neighborhood and watched our children grow for eleven years. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and schools closing all over the city, I was fired from my job in March 2020. I have not been able to work since, and I have been unable to pay my rent.<br /><br /><br />I am asking with all my heart for support from my community and my city. In all my years here, people have watched out for one another, and in this time of need I am deeply grateful for whatever you are able to give. Every cent will go towards paying my rent and getting me back on my feet so I can remain a part of this amazing community. Thank you for your generosity and courage during these times.

Emergency Domestic Abuse Legal Fund Mother & Child

<br />Hello, <br /><br /><br /><br /><br />I am a senior citizen who has several medical problems and I need assistance.  I receive approximately $3000 of medical bills each month. I am HIV positive. I have emphysema and COPD as well. I’m a lung cancer survivor and also have mental health needs. I have arthritis and an enlarged prostate which runs in the family. I am 60 years old and am asking for this amount to cover a year’s worth of medical bills so I can pay for all of my medical bills through this year. This way I do not have to worry and do not have to make the decision between having medication I need to live or having enough money to eat.<br /><br /><br />I am not married, do not have children, and my support network is quite small. I will not be able to come up with these funds on my own and am hoping to receive help from others. I know these are difficult times for all of us, but if you are able to provide any sort of help so that I can continue to get the medication I need to live I would be extremely grateful.<br /><br /><br />Thank God for your help

My name Alam, and I live in Brooklyn with my brother and elderly mother. We love each other and our community. We are an Bangladeshi family. We have all been exposed to COVID-19 and so god that we have all recovered. Due to the pandemic, our family is facing unprecedented challenges. I lost my job as an Receptionist/EA, and my brother, who is self-employed has lost all of his gigs  and has been trying his best to build his network for his business. As our mother is not able to work, and my father is in Bangladesh due to COVID-19, it has been hard for him to come visit. We have been trying our best since March to meet our needs with all the savings we had. It is now up to us to come up with rent and utilities each month and ask for your help. <br /><br /><br />We are asking for the support of our amazing community to help us raise $7,500 to cover our rent and utilities so we can remain safe in our home, and with each other, as we navigate these difficult times. I’m a 23-year-old, non-binary, college graduate from St. John’s University, born and raised in Crown Heights, Brooklyn.  I recently became a community organizer with Equality for Flatbush, and spent four straight days in a blockade to prevent an eviction in my neighborhood.  I need support so I can move into my own place.<br /><br />I suffer from PTSD, and because of financial struggles I need funds in order to securely move out of my current living situation, acquire safe housing, and get an emotional support animal.
