Mike Rubio is a father who loves his kids relentlessly, with realness, with tenderness, with humility, with humor.

He is a son who makes sure his mom feels seen, loved, cherished.

He is our rideor die homie, who will also clown the shit out of us all day.

He is a cat from East Oakland doing the difficult, beautiful work of healing himself in the here and now, for generations before and after.

He is a movement warrior who inspired the lives of so many young people.

He is a risk taker who changed careers to keep gentrification at bay so peeps are not pushed out of the Bay ( Check out Own In the Bay ).

He is an avid learner. Like he ALWAYS got facts to drop.

He is a burgeoning wine snob.

He is funny AF and entirely loveable, even when he’s not.

He is our brother by bond who we love and care for deeply. And who is facing an immense and intense journey and reckoning with 2 rare and severe cancers.

WHAT IS GOING ON WITH MIKE

In November 2021 Mike went to see the doctor for what was thought to be pneumonia. That visit resulted in a 3 and half week hospital stay in which he endured open heart surgery, numerous blood transfusions, invasive tests, and an abrupt shift to life as he was living it.

During his hospitalization, Mike was diagnosed with Erdheim Chester Disease , a rare blood cancer. After going through open heart surgery to remove a tumor, it was revealed to be malignant. Shortly thereafter, he was diagnosed with Intimal Sarcoma,

The last few months have felt like running in slow motion. The ebbs and flows of shock, fear, anger, anxiety ensue, as do the jokes and roasting - coping in all the ways. We honor them all, including going into planning mode with lists, calendars, spreadsheets, and of course, COVID safety.

Last week, Mike began chemotherapy to target the intimal sarcoma. It was in this time, the enormity and possibility of what is ahead for Mike and his family hit. That the necessity of community and resource became palpable, undeniable. That it is time to share, reach out, and ask for support. We are grateful Mike gave us permission to do so.

WHERE YOU COME IN

Mike has shared with us that what will help him access the hope and fortitude he has, wants, and needs to face a challenging prognosis and intense treatment is connection.

There is no immunity like community, and no medicine like relation. So we ask that you connect with Mike to:

Send well-wishes, blessings, jokes, memes, gifs

Share your journey with illness, cancer, chemo, the medical industrial complex

Share holistic, healing, spiritual work that has helped you in your journeys

Share how you allow(ed) or surrender(ed) to let those who love you take care of you

Bear witness and be in the moment with him.

Our aim is to provide as much ease as we can so Mike can focus on his health and his family. Living with cancers is expensive AF. So we are also asking that you consider a donation in any amount that you are able.

We are grateful to be Mike’s care crew and for his trust in us. We are grateful to have such broad and beloved communities to share, invite, and ask for connection and contribution.

If you have have other ways to connect or contribute, feel free to reach out to Mike directly or send Kanwarpal a message on this page.

With love, tenderness, and jokes,

He was a brilliant, sweet, compassionate, hilarious, good kid with an infectious laugh. He had a heart of gold and was loved by those he met. Demetrius could captivate a whole room with his smile. To know he is no longer with us is deeply painful, and the best way we can honor him is to carry his bright spirit with us wherever we go.

Demetrius, a loved son, grandson, brother, friend, mentor and student, was tragically killed on April 10th by an act of gun violence when he and his friends were driving and suddenly caught in the middle of a shootout and Demetrius was killed by a stray bullet.

Demetrius was a devoted family member and community member, who truly cared for others. In addition to taking college courses at BCC and working at the Dollar Tree, he was also an intern at Berkeley Youth Alternatives and an involved member of his church, Acts Full Gospel.

Demetrius brought charm and laughter to each space he entered. Whether he was singing, dancing, or making jokes with his signature sly smile, Demetrius had a rare ability to lift people up and remind them of life's joy.

Thank you for your support of Demetrius' family during this difficult time. We will miss him dearly, and anything you can provide is greatly appreciated.

We owe a profound debt of gratitude to Demetrius for the beauty he shared with us each day. We love you, Demetrius, and may you rest in peace.

We are starting a GoFundMe to help the family with any expenses that come up (any expenses outside of the funeral/burial costs) so that they can take the time they need to grieve, without worrying about raising any money or taking time off to grieve.

Funds will go to Demetrius' mom Angela Davis and the fundraiser is being coordinated by Briahn Badelle, former REALM High School staff who worked with Demetrius..

In Memorial of Demetrius Fleming-Davis

Kevin Weston has transitioned after two years of living with a rare and aggressive leukemia. On Sunday June 15, 2014, Father's Day, he passed away in the loving arms of his wife Lateefah, in a moment of perfect love and peace.

Kevin and Lateefah were blessed to be accompanied through the cancer years by a large and loving community that supported them every step of the way. That journey is not over. Kevin's family is left with tens of thousands of dollars in medical bills due in the coming quarter alone. Lateefah has a daughter beginning college and a little girl who needs her mother at her side in the coming months. In other words (though certainly not in hers), she needs our financial support--to pay the medical bills, give her time with her family and the means to support them, and to give Kevin the memorial he so very much deserves.

Please give what you can, a little or a lot. Just as importantly, please circulate this message among your networks. Now is the time to turn the remarkable community Kevin and Lateefah created and lived within into the cash the family needs to make it through this passage.

If you would like to mail a contribution, please send it to: Lateefah Simon c/o Rosenberg Foundation, 131 Steuart Street, Suite 650, San Francisco, CA 94105. Friends of Kevin's family also plan to establish a scholarship fund for making tax-deductible donations in the near future, so please stay tuned.

Thank you for helping honor Kevin's legacy!
