<div>He is a cat from East Oakland doing the difficult, beautiful work of healing himself in the here and now, for generations before and after.

<div>He is a movement warrior who inspired the lives of so many young people.

<div>He is an avid learner. Like he ALWAYS got facts to drop.

<div>He is a burgeoning wine snob.

<div>He is funny AF and entirely loveable, even when he’s not.

<div>He is our brother by bond who we love and care for deeply. And who is facing an immense and intense journey and reckoning with 2 rare and severe cancers.

<div><strong>WHAT IS GOING ON WITH MIKE</strong>
</div>
<div>In November 2021 Mike went to see the doctor for what was thought to be pneumonia. That visit resulted in a 3 and half week hospital stay in which he endured open heart surgery, numerous blood transfusions, invasive tests, and an abrupt shift to life as he was living it.

</div>
<div>During his hospitalization, Mike was diagnosed with <a href="https://erdheim-chester.org/about-ecd" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Erdheim Chester Disease</a> , a rare blood cancer. After going through open heart surgery to remove a tumor, it was revealed to be malignant. Shortly thereafter, he was diagnosed with <a href="https://www.dovemed.com/diseases-conditions/intimal-sarcoma-of-artery/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Intimal Sarcoma</a>,

<div>The last few months have felt like running in slow motion. The ebbs and flows of shock, fear, anger, anxiety ensue, as do the jokes and roasting - coping in all the ways. We honor them all, including going into planning mode with lists, calendars, spreadsheets, and of course, COVID safety.

<div>Last week, Mike began chemotherapy to target the intimal sarcoma. It was in this time, the enormity and possibility of what is ahead for Mike and his family hit. That the necessity of community and resource became palpable, undeniable. That it is time to share, reach out, and ask for support. We are grateful Mike gave us permission to do so.

Michael Rubio Cancer Care Fund

He was a brilliant, sweet, compassionate, hilarious, good kid with an infectious laugh.  He had a heart of gold and was loved by those he met. Demetrius could captivate a whole room with his smile. To know he is no longer with us is deeply painful, and the best way we can honor him is to carry his bright spirit with us wherever we go. <br /><br />Demetrius, a loved son, grandson, brother, friend, mentor and student, was tragically killed on April 10th by an act of gun violence when he and his friends were driving and suddenly caught in the middle of a shootout and Demetrius was killed by a stray bullet. <br /><br />Demetrius was a devoted family member and community member, who truly cared for others. In addition to taking college courses at BCC and working at the Dollar Tree, he was also an intern at Berkeley Youth Alternatives and an involved member of his church, Acts Full Gospel. <br /><br /><br />Demetrius brought charm and laughter to each space he entered. Whether he was singing, dancing, or making jokes with his signature sly smile, Demetrius had a rare ability to lift people up and remind them of life's joy. <br /><br /><br />Thank you for your support of Demetrius' family during this difficult time. We will miss him dearly, and anything you can provide is greatly appreciated. <br /><br /><br />We owe a profound debt of gratitude to Demetrius for the beauty he shared with us each day. East Oakland's beloved resident and organizer, Ms. Sherry, has tragically lost her son, Simbarashe Sherry. He was 35 years old and a father of 5 beautiful children aged 10-14. He is now with the ancestors. 

Funds raised through here will help with travel expenses for Ms. Sherry and family, to bring him home to Oakland, with funeral services, and for additional support for his children and family. God bless.

Kevin Weston has transitioned after two years of living with a rare and aggressive leukemia. On Sunday June 15, 2014, Father's Day, he passed away in the loving arms of his wife Lateefah, in a moment of perfect love and peace. <br /><br />Kevin and Lateefah were blessed to be accompanied through the cancer years by a large and loving community that supported them every step of the way. That journey is not over. Kevin's family is left with tens of thousands of dollars in medical bills due in the coming quarter alone. Lateefah has a daughter beginning college and a little girl who needs her mother at her side in the coming months. In other words (though certainly not in hers), she needs our financial support--to pay the medical bills, give her time with her family and the means to support them, and to give Kevin the memorial he so very much deserves.<br /><br />Please give what you can, a little or a lot. Just as importantly, please circulate this message among your networks.
