I never imagined I would be in this position, but a few days ago, a tree fell on our house, leaving my family and me suddenly homeless. The damage was so severe that the insurance company had to bring in a crane to remove the tree and tarp what was left of the roof. Now, we’re waiting for a structural engineer and the fire department to determine if it’s even safe to reenter the house. If it is, it will only be to pack up our belongings and move everything into storage while we figure out our next steps. We’re being told it could be six months to a year or longer before we can return—if repairs are even possible. Our household includes my 70-year-old disabled mother, myself, two cats, and two dogs. Right now, my mother and one of our dogs are staying at the family farm, while I’m in a hotel for the night with one dog and two cats. We’re separated, and I’m doing my best to keep everyone safe and cared for, but it’s overwhelming. I need help with short-term fostering for my animals while I try to find temporary housing, and we’re in need of supplies like cat and dog food, cat litter, non-perishable food, and essentials for daily living. Any help with moving, storage, gas cards, food cards, or hotel stays would be a lifeline for us. I am so grateful that no one—human or fur baby—was hurt, but we have a long road ahead.
