On July 3, a tragic boating accident on Lake Geneva took Kate from us, along with her two cousins. Kate was an amazing girl with a bubbly personality, and she didn’t have a mean bone in her body. Whether you met her once or knew her well, she would brighten your life any time of day. She loved playing tennis and softball, spending time with animals, painting, and hanging out with her friends—whether it was on the court, at the pool, or just being with family. On July 3, Caleb (age 6) and Abigail (age 7) Oswald lost their lives in a tragic boating accident caused by an unprecedented severe storm on Lake Geneva, WI. Support for the Loss of Juan Mejia

<div>My name is Angela Lipps. I'm a 50 year old grandmother from Elizabethton, Tennessee. I have three grown children and five grandchildren. I have never been to North Dakota or even any of the surrounding states. I've never visited Minnesota, South Dakota, Iowa, or anywhere else near North Dakota.

<div>On July 14th, 2025 a team of U.S. Marshals showed up at my home while I was babysitting four young children. They arrested me at gunpoint and took me away. Until then I had never had a gun pointed at me. These poor children saw everything happen. It breaks my heart. They were so scared.
</div>

</div>
<div>What I later learned, after many days in jail is that police in Fargo, North Dakota had been investigating a bank fraud case. A woman used a fake military ID to steal tens of thousands of dollars from banks in Fargo. The cops ran surveillance footage through facial recognition software. That AI software said it was me. A detective looked at my Tennessee driver's license and my social media and agreed. Nobody called me. Nobody asked me a single question. They just got a warrant.

<div>I sat in a county jail in Tennessee for 108 days. They said I was fugitive from justice. I had no bail. No one interviewed me. I just sat and waited.

<div>On October 30th I was taken from the jail and flown to North Dakota. It was the first time I had ever been on an airplane. I was terrified. They put a restraint device around my waist and handcuffed me and walked me through the airport in front of everyone. Everyone was staring. I was terrified and exhausted and humiliated.

<div>I was given a lawyer in Fargo. The lawyer pulled my bank records and showed that I was in Tennessee the entire time. My bank records prove that I was at a gas station, ordering a pizza, and using Cash App at the very times they said I was 1,200 miles north in Fargo. I was taken by the U.S. Marshals on July 14th. It wasn't until December 19th that my lawyer and I finally sat down with a detective. It took five minutes for the whole thing to fall apart. Five minutes.

<div>On Christmas Eve, after more than five months in jail, the charges were dismissed.

<div>I was released into a North Dakota winter wearing summer clothes. I had no coat, no ride, no way home. Fargo police did nothing to help me. Local defense attorneys gave me money for a hotel room and food on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. A local nonprofit founder drove me to Chicago and from there I got back home to Tennessee.

<div>No one from the Fargo Police Department has apologized.

<div>I pleaded with the U.S. Marshals to get my dentures and take them to jail with me but they refused. For six months I had no dentures. Jail would not allow me to have them. You can see it in my mugshot. The one they put on the news. That photo was taken at the worst moment of my life and they published it for the world to see.

I lost tools, cables, a battery charger, a tire inflator. Everything.

I don't think I ever will be.

<div>It was 1984. I was 16 years old, and my first job was at a little store called American Science Center on Northwest Hwy in Chicago. The day I started, I was expectedly nervous. First job and all. One of the first tasks was to clean the showcase of our telescopes. Simple right? But pretty expensive stuff. While I was wiping the shelves, one of them gave way, sending two $500 scopes falling. I caught one in my right hand and one on top of my foot. Crisis averted, phew, until I saw my boss looking at me with complete shock and horror. Damn new kid!

<div>Fast forward 41 years to 2025. My name is Pat Meyer, and for the past 41 years of my life I have worked at American Science &amp; Surplus. In 2012, I loved it so much that I purchased the now 88-year old company. We have come a long way since that one store on Northwest Hwy (now in Park Ridge). We have a second store in Milwaukee, a third in Geneva, Ill., a mail order catalog and a website. Over these many years, you, our incredible community we call “Surpies,” have become more than just customers; you are family. Generations of family. Over these 88 years, we’ve shared in your passion for discovery, your ingenious inventions that have blown us away, and the electric energy of our in-store science nights. Rising operational costs, the increased pressure from online retail giants, software issues and soaring shipping rates have pushed our small business (and many others) to the brink of closure.</strong> We need to relocate our warehouse (about a $130,000 cost), update our software (about $25,000) purchase/pay vendors for depleated inventory levels ($50,000), and reorganize our small business and keep our people employeed. After nearly nine decades, the possibility of American Science &amp; Surplus disappearing is a heartbreak we can't imagine, and we hope many of you feel the same.

<div>We are reaching out to help a Connecticut man who endured unimaginable hardship. For 20 years, he was held captive in a room, subjected to abuse, starvation, and neglect. He was rescued last month after courageously setting a fire to gain his freedom.

<div>This brave individual, now at 32, is 5'9, 68 lbs., had been trapped in this horrific situation since he was just 11 years old. He had been deprived of basic medical and dental care, education, suffering both physically and mentally from the abuse he endured.

<div>With the help of first responders, he was rescued from the fire, treated for smoke inhalation, and began to regain his sense of hope. Now, he is facing the immense challenge of rebuilding his life after such a traumatic experience.

<div>She was shot in her own backyard, sustaining damage to her abdomen and hand. The shot to her stomach damaged her colon and spleen and shattered several ribs (which the surgeons removed). She had extensive surgery and is currently on a ventilator.

<div>She also will require reconstructive hand surgery. The bullet tore off quite a bit of her thumb and index finger. Ordinarily, they would amputate, but because the thumb is so important, the doctors will try to save it.

<div>We do not know what lies ahead, but we do know that, at the least, she will need months of rehabilitation and care. During that time, we want her to be able to focus on her recovery and family…not what’s bound to be staggering medical and household bills. And as for her kids, we want to make sure that they have everything they need, because that’s what she'll worry about most.

Support Melissa & Amar’s mental&physical recovery

<div>Hi, my name is Dena Street and my sisters Lori Russaw, Abby Macia, and my Mother Michelle Macia are all fundraising for my sister, Tori Macia. On March 21st 2024, she suffered a serious neck injury due to the actions of a new individual in her life. Since that day, she has been in inpatient medical care in Lincoln, Nebraska. After spending 3 weeks in a hospital bed, unable to walk, move her arms, and do even the basic things to care for herself, she underwent spinal surgery on April 11th.

<div>She regained some of her strength in her arms and movement to her left arm, but is still not able to move her left leg without assistance. That surgery created a new issue and she is now unable to swallow food of any kind. They placed a NG tube to give her much needed nutrition and have been doing swallow studies in hopes to get her back on a normal diet. She has unfortunately not passed these studies and can’t swallow even an ice cube at this point, but it’s still her favorite part of the day. She had a PEG tube surgically placed yesterday, that allows her to get nutrients directly to her stomach through the abdominal wall.

<div>She has been placed in a long term rehabilitation facility where she is expected to spend at least the next 8 weeks. The staff has been amazing and she is working tirelessly to get back to herself. Hopefully she will regain the ability to live a normal life, but we still do not know.

<div>It is so important to me to help my sister, because she never deserved this. I am running this fundraiser to help reduce the burden that she will face with medical bills in addition to the loss of income since she was hurt. She had just started a very promising new career, and just a few weeks later, her entire life is upside down. She is a single Mother of 5, and has had family rally around as much as possible, but it has not been easy from a distance.

In 2021, we erected a lifesize statue of Jackie at our baseball complex inside McAdams Park in Wichita, Kansas. Recently, that statue was cut off just above Jackie's shoe tops and stolen from its rightful place. It was found in disrepair and cannot be repaired As law enforcement searches for the culprits of this crime, we remain devoted to our mission of providing low-cost baseball and education opportunities for our 600 kids, ages 5-14. They are as heartbroken over this theft as any of us and we are determined to replace the statue. We also use donated funds to operate our facilities and education initiatives, which include Bright Lights, Passion Project, Bats and Badges and Full Count. We are devoted to helping our 600 kids in any way we can. We also are working to install better security around the statue area and new lights and artificial turf for two of our playing fields. Support League 42 Inspired by Jackie Robinson

<div>Hi, my name is Shannon and I'm fundraising for Jolene's daughters Kevina and Kaleia.

<div>On Monday January 16, 2024 Jolene passed away. She had finished work and was waiting for the bus, she slipped on some ice and fell face forward into the snow. She tried calling 911 but the call was dropped. They called back, but she had gone unconscious. She was found over an hour and half later. She died of hypothermia. Her girls have a long road ahead of them. They are still reeling from the loss of their dad 6 months ago.

<div>The funds that are raised will be used to cover the costs of funeral arrangements and things that will be needed for the girls. Kevina (21) will be taking guardianship over Kaleia (14). These kids have had to grow up much too fast. Let's help make this transition a little less stressful for them.

<div>Brittany Watts suffered an agonizing miscarriage in the bathroom of her home in Warren, Ohio on September 22, 2023.  As she was hemorrhaging and writhing in pain, she had no way of knowing that the miscarriage was only the beginning of her suffering.   She could not have possibly imagined that the most private situation of her life - the same private situation that thousands of women in this country experience every year - would leave her demonized and fighting for her freedom.

<div>Brittany did nothing to cause her miscarriage.  Her doctor had told her that her 21-week pregnancy could not survive, and she would miscarry.  When the bleeding and the pain from the impending miscarriage got severe, she did the same thing that many  women who miscarry at home do.  Brittany went into her bathroom, miscarried into her toilet, and flushed. What happened after that is something that should only happen in Margaret Atwood's Gilead, and certainly not in the United States of America.

<div>Within hours of Brittany's admission to the hospital for her life-threatening hemorrhaging, police removed the toilet from Brittany's home and destroyed it searching for fetal remains.  Brittany, a woman with no criminal history, was charged with felony gross abuse of a corpse, even though there is no Ohio law dictating the "proper" disposal method of the remains of a miscarriage.  On November 2, Brittany sobbed as she sat in a courtroom listening to police officers describe the details of the most intensely personal moments of her life and then vilify her to the world, all while being recorded by local news media.

<div>Hi, my name is Mindy and I am raising money for Sara Stone, an AMAZING woman who is going through a plethora of serious health issues that require expensive out of pocket treatments and medications. Sara has been recently diagnosed with Chronic Lyme disease with arthritis, Neurological Lyme disease and Epstein-Barr. Sara has had undiagnosed Lyme disease for 2 1/2 years. When she received her diagnosis last month she immediately began a 28 day treatment which had horrific side effects. On top of that, the treatment actually aggravated things further and caused additional co-infections. Because of the late stage Lyme disease Sara must now undergo liver and kidney detox treatment as well as treatment for Lyme disease, which has completely taken over her whole body. Her joints, bones, brain, and immune system have been affected and if it isn’t treated it could cause a stroke, or she could die. At this point it is unknown exactly how many months these treatments will be needed, but Sara will need to undergo several 3 hour treatments per week with a 1 hour commute each way for at least 3 months. Costing thousands of dollars out of pocket. Not to mention the financial burden of maintaining her home and caring for her daughter while she’s away from work to receive her treatments. If you don’t know her personally, she is a self employed small business owner, a mother &amp; a bride to be. She has organized many fundraisers including creating and fundraising for an All Ability Playground in the West Bend community. Sara is a strong, hardworking, proud and independent woman who would never ask for help even in a time of great need like she is in now. And anyone that knows her knows that she would help any of us if the situation was the other way around. So I’m asking please help me help my friend and at least help lighten the financial load so that she can focus on making a full recovery.

<div>We are starting a Go Fund Me for Courtney and Megan Pederson to help pay for medical and travel expenses for Megan, who is just 19. For the past 4 years, Megan has been struggling with the rare syndromes SMAS and MALS. It has caused her to be unable to get nutrition into her body in any form. In April of 2021 she underwent SMAS surgery and MALS surgery in November 2021. Unfortunately, the results were short-lived and now she is unable to get nutrition at all even through feeding tubes and TPN (Total Parenteral Nutrition), which is a last resort. The family has exhausted all options for doctors treating this rare condition in the Midwest. Luckily they have found Dr. Sherisa Warren, in Oklahoma City, who may be able to help Megan. We are hoping to help the family pay for any medical and travel expenses related to the care of Megan. Megan is hoping to spread awareness of these rare syndromes which many know little about. <div>Austin Mayfield was truly one in a million who blessed the lives of countless people during his time on Earth. He was a loving son and brother, he enjoyed the company of his many friends and was a loving husband &amp; father. It is with great sorrow to state he is no longer with us as of July 11th, 2023. <div>Austin was welcomed into this world on January 3rd, 1987 by Denise (Mother), Lewis (Father), and Shane (Brother) in Maquoketa, IA. He grew up in Davenport and attended primary school at Johnson Elementary as well as Holy Family. He was an outstanding athlete and a student. He enjoyed playing many different sports and studied a wide array of subjects. His talents were best seen on the football field where you would witness his incredible strength working in concert with his competitive intensity. After he graduated from Assumption High School, he attended Saint Ambrose, then went on to make contributions to the workforce. He met the love of his life Ali (Wife) in 2013, shortly after they were married. Austin and Ali's love blossomed and blessed this world with 3 children: Ava (Daughter), Ana (Daughter), and Apollo (Son). He enjoyed the company of his family and took pride in the care he provided. Their family was lovingly referred to as the A-Train, the reason can be seen by observing the first initial in their names. Austin continued to enjoy the thrill of competition by participating in various running events and frequently training with his partner Ali.

<div>On Thursday, April 13, 2023, my nephew Ralph P Yarl was on his way to pick up his twin younger brothers from their friend's house a few blocks away from his house. He didn't have his phone. He mistakenly went to the wrong house, one block away from the house where his siblings were. He pulled into the driveway and rang the doorbell. The man in the home opened the door, looked my nephew in the eye, and shot him in the head. My nephew fell to the ground, and the man shot him again. Ralph was then able to get up and run to the neighbor's house, looking for help.

Jazz and competition band. He is a section leader in the marching band; a scholar and one of the top bass clarinet players in Missouri. He recently earned Missouri All-State Band recognition with an honorable mention. He plays multiple instruments in the metropolitan youth orchestra. He is a 2022 Missouri scholar academy alumni. Ralph can often be found with a musical instrument. He loves them all.

<div>Last summer, Ralph attended Missouri Scholar’s Academy, where he got a full college life experience. His goal is to attend Texas A&amp;M to major in chemical Engineering. When asked how he plans to get into this university, he said, “Well, if they have a scholarship for music or academics, I know I can get it.”

<div>Ralph's teacher and friends describe him as “ a kind soul,” “quiet,” “friendly,” “well-mannered,” “always willing to help,” “super smart,” and a “musical genius.”

<div>Ralph was looking forward to graduating high school and finally getting the opportunity to visit West Africa before starting college.

<div>Life looks a lot different right now. Even though he is doing well physically, he has a long road ahead mentally and emotionally. The trauma that he has to endure and survive is unimaginable. He is our miracle. We have heard these types of stories many times, and unfortunately, most black boys are not alive to get another chance.

<div>2021. Officer Daricaud has always had the desire to serve. He started his law enforcement career as a Police Explorer for the North Miami Beach Police Department at the age of 15. Officer Daricaud then served in the U.S. Navy for 5 years and is currently in the U.S. Airforce National Guard.

<div>On March 26, 2023, Officer Daricaud was shot in the neck following up on a traffic stop. He is currently hospitalized due to his serious but stable condition. He is expected to make a full recovery but it will be a long and difficult journey. Officer Daricaud is supported by his wife and son. Jasmine his wife will not be returning to work for the foreseeable future to act as Malik’s caregiver, and Officer Daricaud will not be able to work overtime.
