English version underneath. Mijn verhaal – Steun voor een nieuwe start Mijn naam is Alber. Ik ben een Syrische tandarts en woon inmiddels drie jaar in Nederland als vluchteling. In Syrië heb ik tandheelkunde gestudeerd en mijn diploma behaald. In Nederland mag ik echter nog niet als tandarts werken. Hiervoor moet ik mijn diploma laten erkennen en het BIG-examen halen. De voorbereiding hierop is intensief, tijdrovend en kost veel inzet. Mijn examen staat gepland in december. Sinds meer dan twee jaar werk ik fulltime, vijf dagen per week, als tandartsassistent. Naast mijn werk heb ik de Nederlandse taal grotendeels zelfstandig geleerd. Ik heb lange uren gewerkt en gestudeerd om mezelf te blijven ontwikkelen, met één duidelijk doel: mijn beroep hier opnieuw mogen uitoefenen en een actieve bijdrage leveren aan de samenleving. Mijn vrouw is architecte, afgestudeerd in Syrië. Architectuur is haar grote droom. Sinds haar eerste dag in Nederland werkt zij hard aan haar toekomst. Net als ik destijds leert zij zelfstandig Nederlands, elke dag opnieuw, terwijl zij actief solliciteert naar kansen in haar vakgebied. Helaas is het zonder voldoende taalniveau en zonder lokaal netwerk erg moeilijk om werk te vinden als architect. Daarom overweegt zij nu om haar droom tijdelijk uit te stellen en ander werk te zoeken, wat emotioneel zwaar is. Ik herken dit gevoel. Jarenlang heb ik andere tandartsen patiënten zien helpen, terwijl ik zelf niets mocht doen, ondanks mijn opleiding en ervaring. Die machteloosheid is zwaar, en ik gun dit gevoel mijn vrouw absoluut niet. Onze financiële situatie is niet zomaar ontstaan. Door de oorlog en de onveilige situatie in Syrië heb ik twee bankleningen moeten afsluiten, samen ongeveer 15.000 euro. Met dit geld kon ik mijn vrouw in veiligheid brengen, ver weg van de gevolgen van de oorlog. Omdat ik geen paspoort heb en zij niet naar Europa kon reizen, was Georgië het enige land waar wij elkaar legaal konden ontmoeten. Daar zijn wij getrouwd, na bijna twee jaar elkaar niet te hebben gezien. Na het huwelijk ben ik teruggekeerd naar Nederland, waar ik werk en een vast inkomen heb. Ik heb vervolgens een aanvraag gedaan zodat mijn vrouw bij mij kon komen wonen, waarbij ik volledig financieel verantwoordelijk ben. Gelukkig woont mijn vrouw nu sinds ongeveer zes maanden bij mij in Nederland. Wij doen alles wat in onze macht ligt. Wij werken hard aan onszelf, aan de taal, aan integratie en aan onze toekomst. Maar soms is hard werken alleen niet genoeg. I graduated as a dentist in Syria, but in the Netherlands I am not yet allowed to work as a dentist. To do so, I must have my diploma recognized and pass the BIG exam, which is scheduled for December. Preparing for this exam is intensive, demanding, and requires full dedication. For more than two years, I have been working full-time, five days a week, as a dental assistant. Alongside my job, I have largely taught myself the Dutch language. I work long hours and study continuously, all with one clear goal: to practice my profession again and contribute meaningfully to society. My wife is an architect, graduated in Syria. Architecture is her lifelong dream. Since her first day in the Netherlands, she has been working hard on her future. Just as I once did, she is learning Dutch independently, day by day, while actively applying for opportunities in her field. Unfortunately, without sufficient language skills and without a local professional network, finding work as an architect is extremely difficult. She is now considering postponing her dream and looking for any kind of job, which is emotionally very challenging. I know this feeling well. For years, I watched other dentists treat and help patients while I was unable to do so myself, despite my education and experience. This sense of helplessness is heavy, and I do not want my wife to experience the same. Our financial situation did not arise without reason. Due to the war and unsafe conditions in Syria, I had to take out two bank loans, totaling approximately €15,000. This money was used to bring my wife to a safe place, far away from the consequences of the war. Because I do not have a passport and she could not travel to Europe, Georgia was the only country where we could legally meet. We got married there after nearly two years of not seeing each other. After the wedding, I returned to the Netherlands, where I work and have a stable income. I then applied for my wife to join me here, taking full financial responsibility. Fortunately, my wife has now been living with me in the Netherlands for about six months. We are doing everything we can. We work hard on ourselves, on language learning, integration, and building a future. But sometimes, hard work alone is not enough.
