<div>In March 2024, at the age of 35, I was diagnosed with stage IV rectal cancer with a metastasis in my liver. This was a shock: I had no family history, and none of the doctors suspected it. In fact, I'd had a negative occult blood test when I went to ER with severe digestive symptoms a few months before.

<div>I was treated with total neoadjuvant therapy at UCLA. I had 6 weeks of combination radiation and chemotherapy (Xeloda). The chemoradiation was followed by 6 rounds of combination chemotherapy: oxaliplatin infusions followed by two weeks of Xeloda. I tolerated this unusually well. During this period, I managed to hike up to over 11,000ft multiple times in the Sierras, and I wrote the main text of a 72 author meta-analysis paper and submitted it to Nature where it has passed first round reviews (currently working on revisions).

<div>I showed a good clinical response, and at the end of October I had surgery: I was under for 9 hours, and they cut out a large bit of my rectum, 1/3rd of my liver, and gave me a temporary ileostomy. Waking up from this was probably the strangest experience of my life: I felt more machine than man, and I had wild hallucinations form such a large dose of anesthesia.

<div>It took a while to feel OK after that surgery. However, I still had the ostomy. I had that reversed at the end of January in another surgery, which took a greater toll on me than I expected.
</div>

<div>There's a cumulative effect of having so many major medical interventions, and it reveals anything weak in body or mind. Surprisingly, my mind held up well during this process. This was thanks to the love and support I received from friends and family.
</div>

</div>
<div>I only just started to feel OK again and I got bad news: I got a positive circulating tumor DNA test (ctDNA), the signatera test from natera. Unfortunately, the ctDNA carried on rising, and in July 2025 a new lesion appeared in a lymph node near my liver (periportal).
</div>

</div>
<div>I was treated with irinotecan and panitumumab infusions, which showed a good response, followed by live MRI guided SBRT radiation treatment to the lesion. However, after finishing this treatment, the ctDNA remained positive and began rising again. I restarted irinotecan and panitumumab infusions, which brought ctDNA back to negative on signatera, although it was still positive on the more sensitive Personalis assay.

<div>During this period I had begun to develop stomach pain and digestive symptoms. Things took a turn for the worse when I collapsed vomiting blood in Santa Monica and was rushed to the ER. They found out I had a duodenal ulcer that had bled. I had some blood transfused, and I was sent home to complete an intensive course of antibiotics for H. Pylori infection.

<div>However, after about a week, I started to get very weak to the point that showering was a struggle, with my heart racing. I collapsed again went back to the ER in an ambulance. They found my hemoglobin was 5g/dL, a dangerously low level (normal is over 13.5). Multiple blood transfusions didn't bring it up and I collapsed again in the night after passing a large amount of blood. They took me to intensive care and performed an emergency endoscopy where they clipped and sprayed the ulcer. Thankfully this worked and I was discharged after another 3 nights in hospital.

<div>Unsurprisingly, nearly bleeding to death wasn't good for me, and my ctDNA began to spike rapidly. I had a PET-CT and it revealed 3 new disease sites in abdominal lymph nodes. I restarted irinotecan and panitumumab infusions after barely recovering from the ulcer incident. This showed an excellent response, with the sites resolving on imaging, although ctDNA remained positive.

<div>I've now started bot/bal immunotherapy, a not yet approved immunotherapy treatment that is the first of its kind to show strong results in my kind of cancer, micro-satellite stable colorectal cancer.
</div>

<div>Hopefully this treatment will be effective, but it is unlikely to be enough on its own to prevent future disease recurrence.
</div>

</div>
<div>I am asking for help to get a personalized neoantigen cancer vaccine, which could substantially increase my chances of surviving this deadly disease that is likely incurable under standard care.
</div>

<div>While cancer vaccines have shown promising results, they are not yet approved, meaning one has to pay for the design, manufacture, and administration of the vaccine. The total cost of which is $104,133, beyond my means or those of my family. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

<div>UK police arrested me and held me incommunicado after the Chinese Embassy in London reported me as a terrorist for peacefully protesting outside. I was handcuffed in a stress position and ultimately held in a cell for 23 hours with no access to lawyers or the Australian High Commission.

<div>Putin is carrying out a genocidal war of extermination in Ukraine right now. He's clearly told the world that he does not recognise Ukraine's right to exist as a sovereign nation-state and culture, and so he is now bombing hospitals, schools, and civilian areas indiscriminately to terrify the world into submission. With more than one million Ukrainian civilians forced to flee their homes already and UN projections putting future refugee numbers at up to five million, this is already shaping up as one of the worst humanitarian crises of our times.

<div>Like most other Australians, I've been deeply moved by the events in Ukraine and I want to do more than just Tweet about what's happening. Solidarity is important, but talk is cheap while Putin bombs playgrounds and kindergartens. Ukraine is now the new front line in the global battle for democracy against dictatorship. Having spent the past three years of my life campaigning against the Chinese dictatorship's human rights abuses and aggressive threats to invade neighbouring countries, I fear Putin's invasion of Ukraine confirms all our worst fears about the global march of autocracy and imperialism. This is where we must make a stand for democracy and justice, so I am travelling to Poland with a small team including Hong Konger Australian human rights activist Max Mok and a Ukrainian translator friend to support Ukrainian refugees in a humanitarian capacity.

<div>We've already reached out to both Caritas Internationalis in Austria and Poland as well as a group of dedicated drivers helping transport Ukrainian refugees to safety. We aim to volunteer for Caritas while also renting a car to drive Ukrainian refugees from the border into Poland and Germany. There are thousands of stranded Ukrainians right now so we think this can be a good concrete way to help on the ground. We will be staying at a monastery near the border and we will live as austerely as possible while over there so as to ensure the funds we raise go to those who need it. This GoFundMe will pay for medicine for Ukrainian refugees, our economy flight tickets to Poland, car-rental and fuel expenses while in Europe. We will not use funds in a personal capacity beyond that which is required to get to Europe and support ourselves in as basic conditions as possible while volunteering.

Australian Volunteers For Ukrainian Refugees

<div>When Chinese tennis star Peng Shuai publicly revealed she had been a victim of past sexual abuse,  the Chinese government should have immediately established a full, fair and transparent investigation, without censorship, into her allegations. Any victim and survivor deserves to be heard and deserves to have justice.

<div>Instead, the Chinese government decided to scrub Peng Shuai from the internet and placed her under what appears to be house arrest. No one knows to what extent she is actually free to speak because the few appearances she has made since making the initial allegation have appeared to be scripted and made under duress. With stars like Serena Williams and Naomi Osaka expressing grave concerns for her safety and well-being, the Women’s Tennis Association announced it would not be hosting tournaments in China until concerns about Peng Shuai’s safety were addressed.

<div>But sadly Tennis Australia has not taken such a firm stance in favor of human rights and basic standards of justice. In fact, Tennis Australia  called police on human rights activists at the 2022 Australian Open for simply wearing shirts asking the same question Naomi Osaka, Serena Williams and fans the world over have asked: “Where is Peng Shuai?”

<div>Given this disappointing turn of events, my idea is quite simple. How about we present major difficulties for Tennis Australia by printing off one thousand of these shirts and giving them out for free to spectators entering the Women’s Grand Final.

<div>I think if any of us were in Peng Shuai’s position, silenced and cut off from the world by an unaccountable government, we would hope that someone, somewhere would care.  I think most of us would hope that people across the world would not look the other way but instead raise as much noise and hell about it as possible. Help Corruption Crusader Fight for Your Rights

<p>When the University of Adelaide announced Peter Høj's appointment as Vice-Chancellor, I promised to lead a mission to link up with my friends in the Adelaide Uyghur community to oppose him over his history of close dealings with the Chinese dictatorship. After holding campus protests at UQ against the Chinese state's brutal treatment of Uyghurs, Tibetans and Hong Kongers, Peter Høj personally directed a stunningly intrusive, systematic surveillance campaign against me that would eventually produce more than 15,000 pages worth of internal UQ documents relating to my activities. He spent millions on international law firms to try and permanently bar me from my own university. Now he thinks he can just gallavant off to another leading Australian university for a new five year contract worth millions. The elite don't care - they know him through their cocktail parties where he undoubtedly provided great explanations as to why UQ courses funded by the Chinese government taught Uyghur Genocide apologia under his watch. But will we, the public, just sit idly by and put up with him being rewarded with new million dollar contracts after this terrible behaviour? We demand better.<br /><br />So this week, we will be travelling to Adelaide in style. We're hiring a minibus to make the 23 hour trip across 2,000 kilometers of desert outback road. It is absolutely bonkers but that's precisely the point - we will lead a convoy through the countryside, banners and streamers held aloft, touring across Australia to stand against t those who enable China's fascist dictatorship. We are proud to be owned and operated by our people and for our people and we need your help.<br /><br /><strong>Our work is grounded in justice, human rights, healing, and truth-telling.  It’s time to tell the truth. </strong><br /><br />The devastating effects of colonisation, family separation and racism, have pushed our people to be the most imprisoned people on earth which means we’re also more likely to die in police or prison custody. Aboriginal women are the fastest-growing prison population, and almost all of our people in prison are themselves victims of violence.<br /><br />Next year it will be 30 years since the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody handed down its findings. The Royal Commission was meant to put an end to Black deaths in custody but the Commission’s findings are still gathering dust, and 437 of us have died in police or prison cells since. <br /><br />We have been told by politicians, bureaucrats, and other decision-makers to wait for change, that justice and progress takes time, but how much more time do we need to wait? No one has been held accountable for our deaths in custody or for the daily police violence we endure.<br /><br /><strong>Waiting has taken the lives of 437 of us. We aren’t willing to wait anymore.</strong><br /><br />We need your help. We are a small (but mighty!) organisation. We do not have the funds for the extensive campaigning and advocacy that is needed to end Black deaths in custody in this country. <br /><br />We are asking for your financial support to continue the vital and critical work we do for our communities. In Australia, a handful of politicians have tried to distance us from what’s happening there. This is wrong, Australia is no better - we need to tell the truth.<br /><br /><strong>Currently, there are two police officers awaiting trial for the murder of Aboriginal people who have been fatally shot. But there has never been a conviction for a black death in custody. </strong><br /><br />With your financial support, we can tell the truth that needs to be told: that in Australia no police officer has ever been convicted for the death of our people in their custody. In fact, police are more likely to be promoted than charged.<br /><br />Together, we can advocate for accountability for Black deaths and for a justice system based on the strengths of our culture, of healing, and of truth-telling. Periods don’t stop for pandemics. For many who’ve either been unable to leave their homes or have been experiencing poverty recently, dealing with menstruation comfortably and safely has been difficult or impossible. That’s why our group Radical Democracy is starting a fundraising drive to supply students in need with pads and tampons. We want to fight the stigma around periods in order to make these products more accessible to everyone. We also believe that free market fundamentalism is the root cause of many conditions of human suffering, and that those in poverty shouldn’t have to suffer through their periods in silence. We aim to undermine this rigged system, using mutual aid as a strategy to level the playing field. We need your donations to facilitate this drive.
