PhD in Tibetan Buddhism and the Philosophy of Science.

Introduction. Dr Jared Jones has trained in the Gelug and Zen traditions for about twenty years, with instruction from Tibetan, Nepalese, and Western teachers. He is also a long-time practitioner of Tai Chi, Nei Gong, and Chi Gong. The long-term goal is for Dr Jones be sustained via community support, so that he can teach meditation, philosophy, and Buddhist practice full-time to the community as a whole. However, all teachings are offered free of charge. Dr Jones holds a Master’s degree that compares traditional models of Buddhist meditation with modern cognitive scientific research into meditation. His PhD from Roehampton University applies Middle Way philosophy (Prāsaṅgika) to Philosophy of Science. Thus, his approach combines modern scientific research, practical experience, and traditional lineages of Buddhist practice. How Your Contribution Helps. >Keeps teachings freely available to anyone who wants them >Improves software and tools for creating high-quality content >Funding charity projects across the Buddhist world >Covering the purchase of new books, retreats, and trainings courses If this vision resonates with you, we welcome your support. If not, everything is still freely offered.
Retreat: April 15-19, 2026 Dr Jared Jones is a long-time lay practioner of Gelug Tibetan Buddhism and Zen Buddhism, as well as Dragon Gate Daoism, with authorization to teach provided by his primary teachers. In addition to completing numerous retreats and training courses in traditional Buddhist religious settings, Jared also earned an MA focused on Buddhist meditation and cognitive science, and a PhD comparing Indo-Tibetan Middle Way philosophy and Western philosophy of science. The five meditative skills taught on this retreat will allow one to make rapid progress in meditation as a beginner or to deepen one's experience as an advanced practitioner. Each is specifically aimed at being effective for city-dwelling laypeople with limited time for formal seated practice. The retreat will be held online and the videos will be uploaded to YouTube so that those in different time zones can follow along in their own time zones. The recommended donation is $108, but no one will be turned away for lack of funds.
What are we doing? We are sponsoring a recitation of the complete Tibetan Buddhist canon at Sed Gyued Monastery. It will begin sometime between January 2026 - February 2026. Additional funds will support the monastery’s general welfare. What is the recitation of the Kangyur and Tengyur? Reciting the Kangyur means reciting all the Sutras, Tantras, Vinaya, Prajñaparamita, and other primary texts. Reciting the Tengyur means reciting the Abhidharma, Madhyamaka texts (Ven. Nagarjuna's works, etc.), Cittamatra texts (Ven. Asanga’s works, etc.), Jataka tales, logic and epistemology texts (Ven. Dharmakirti's works, etc.), medical treatises, and other early Buddhist commentarial works. What are the benefits? This a powerful purification practice that removes negative karma and accumulates incalculable positive karma: this has the potential to directly remove obstacles like poor health, loss, and conflict — and create both temporary and ultimate happiness. The results from 2024's & 2025's recitation were stunning. The benefits are explained in The Condensed Jewel Quality Sutra: "Consider the merit obtained from building a stupa of the sorrowless state, the one gone to bliss, making the stupa of the seven jewels, making as many of these to fill many thousands of ten-million worlds equalling the number of sand grains in the Ganges River, and making offerings to these stupas by many sentient beings—infinite sentient beings of all the existing worlds making offerings of lights, incense and flowers etc—three times a day, for aeons." "The merit created by reading, writing, keeping, making an offering to, and paying respect to the Mother Prajñaparamita and Kangyur taught by Buddha who possesses the Ten Powers is infinitely greater than the former." What does it cost? The actual prayer costs ~£909 (~$1,222 / ₹110,000). This amount includes feeding and offering tea to the monks for ~45 days and a grand lunch after the recitation is complete. Where will additional funding go? All additional funds will support the monastery. If we reach our goal, it will cover most of the monastery’s operating costs for one year. For reference, the total operating cost for the monastery, not including food, is about ~£4,155 (~$5,285) per year. To feed all the monks costs an additional ~£22,298 (~$28,312) per year. The operating costs allow the monastery to offer a Buddhist Sutra and Tantra curriculum, language classes, cover the monks’ annual medical expenses, to fund ritual activities, and to engage merit-making and purification activities. The more we raise, the greater our support for the monastery’s general welfare. See a detailed analysis on their website: http://www.sed-gyued.org/patronage.html
