I moved into my current home on March 1st, hoping for a fresh start for myself and my family. The house needed some TLC, and the property manager assured me that repairs would be made. Unfortunately, nothing was ever fixed, and new issues kept appearing. The lawn maintenance worker informed me that the yard was covered in poison ivy, which he contracted while working. Inside, sinks and showers leaked, something was wrong inside the walls, and the garage door was ajar, letting in wasps and bees—which is especially dangerous for me since I’m allergic. The property manager promised to pressure wash the house to remove nests and spider webs, but that never happened. I also noticed a strange water sound every time I used the kitchen sink, and the stove I rented wouldn’t work, even though it was brand new. After mentioning the possibility of legal action due to the lawn worker’s poison ivy, the owner finally responded, but still no repairs were made. I called code enforcement, and they found several violations. The owner retaliated by suing me for late fees, and after going to court, some issues were resolved, but many remained. We agreed to waive May rent and pay June by June 25th. Meanwhile, my health was declining. I have COPD and asthma from Long COVID, and the unsafe conditions made things worse. On June 12th, I discovered mold and mildew behind my dresser, and the wall was soft to the touch. I missed several days of work and had to take a leave of absence from school because my health was failing. On July 7th, the judge ruled to evict me because I couldn’t pay the settlement amount, and now I need to find safe housing for my family. My son is non-verbal autistic and my youngest daughter is also on the spectrum, which makes finding safe housing even more urgent for us.
