But to keep this annual festival going strong and safe, the organizers are required by the City of Vancouver to cover costly security expenses — including barricades, security patrols, dump trucks and more.

<div>On June 8, 2025, we’re hosting a full-day community haircut fundraiser. Every participating artist is donating their time and skill, and 100% of proceeds will go directly toward helping Filipino BC pay for security measures to ensure that next year’s Lapu-Lapu Day is not only successful — but safe and protected for all who attend.

<div>Conheci Kira (elu/delu) na escola: estudamos juntes no Colégio São Vicente de Paulo, no Brasil. Quase 20 anos depois, nos reaproximamos depois que me mudei para o Canadá em 2022, começamos a conversar sobre imigração e viramos amigues novamente desde então.

<div>I met Kira (they/them) in school: we studied together at Colégio São Vicente de Paulo in Brazil. Almost 20 years later, we reconnected after I moved to Canada in 2022, and we started talking about immigration and became friends again.

<div>On April 26th, during the Lapu-Lapu Festival in Vancouver, Kira left us in a tragic and sudden way. Kira was one of the 11 victims of the accident that claimed so many lives that day, leaving behind their partner Kim, their little dog Zoe, and their five cats: Monina, Haku, Tobi, Goda, and Gamba.

<div>Kira was a person full of light, joy, and deeply loved by friends, family, and colleagues. Their departure leaves an immense void — especially for Kim, who now faces the painful reality of moving forward without their life partner.

<div>In this moment of grief and rebuilding, we want to come together to support Kim. The donations collected will help him cover immediate expenses and provide some financial relief as he navigates this very difficult period.

Support Kim in Memory of Kira Salim

<div>Hi, my name is Amanda. My good friend Christi Watkins and her son, Nox (11) were both hit and injured at the Lapu Lapu day festival. They are both still in hospital and stable, but Christi does have a significant amount of injuries including 2 fractured vertebrae, broken ribs, a punctured lung and kidney damage.
</div>
<div>Christi had organized a breakdancing battle at the festival that my kids and I had attended in which she had put months of thought and effort into. Her smile at the event said everything, and the way the day ended is absolutely devastating.
</div>
<div>I can’t begin to imagine what her and Nox witnessed and the physical and mental recovery that lays ahead. Christi will need to take significant time off of work, with which she helps support her family of 4.
</div>
<div>Please consider donating to lessen the financial burden on the family so they can focus on healing. All the proceeds will be going directly to Christi to help with living expenses while the family is recovering. Anything is appreciated.

Help Christi and Nox recover from the Lapu Lapu tragedy

<div>I’m Linda, and in 2021 after initially being misdiagnosed by a BC family doctor, I learned through a specialist that I had two forms of aggressive cancer. A panel of ten doctors from across Canada met to plan my treatment protocol. I went through surgery, chemo, and radiation only to receive a grim prognosis this past fall. Through radical lifestyle changes and the care of an amazing naturopath who specializes in oncology, the cancer has been contained using Germany technology. Treatment (a combination of hypertherapy and Helixor) costs $8,600 per month, so we’re hoping to raise enough funds to cover two years worth of treatment (and not go crazy worrying about finances in the process). If you’d like to help, we’d love to have you on board!
