<div>Sophie, my daughter, has been sick for 15 years. In March her memoir about her journey with chronic illness, The Body is a Doorway, will finally be in bookstores—but it is a story without a tidy ending. Unlike many chronicles of disease, it does not conclude with a treatment or a pill that makes her healthy again. Instead, Sophie asks hard, uncomfortable questions about how we live with disability and dysfunction and how we weave our own human story into the long story of the earth. Many people have found in Sophie’s talks and writing over the years a witnessing of their physical situations that in itself is a kind of healing—because they no longer feel alone.

<div>As Sophie’s mother I will say that I am daily astounded by her creativity, her literary output, and her resilience. She confronts rejection and she gives her writing away online. She receives a frightening diagnosis and she writes another book. She is always telling another story or writing another world into being. Unfortunately, that is often at the expense of her actual body, which is demanding at this moment that she focus all of her attention and resources on stabilizing what is currently happening. She is very sick right now.

<div>Sophie’s book and substack chronicle her illness—the misdiagnosis that leads to mistreatment that leads to so many complications, her eventual diagnosis with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, a complex collagen disorder, with at least 15 different variations and expressions, and a host of problems—with gi function, eyes, lungs, hearts, kidneys, joints, etc. There is no treatment and there is no cure. There is managing all of this and all of the various specialists it requires. In addition, Sophie developed a mast-cell activation disorder from an onslaught of antibiotics wrongly prescribed for Lyme disease (which she probably never had) that further ravaged her digestive system and made eating a minefield. This past year we have also found out that Sophie has the highest blood mercury levels ever recorded in New York state, which may be a complication of the EDS and another genetic disorder (recently found out) that affects how she metabolizes certain vitamins. She is very slowly beginning to treat the neurological problems these intersecting issues have caused, but it’s a long uncertain road. Her severe autoimmune issues have also now resulted in frightening masses in her lungs that will need to be biopsied this spring. We still do not have clear answers as to what the nature of these masses are and what treatment they may necessitate.

<div>After 15 years of somehow finding the resources to get her to specialists and healers of all kinds, after catapulting herself to financial independence through her extraordinary work, we her parents and Sophie herself are practically and emotionally exhausted—at the very moment we have found a treatment, not covered by insurance, that might actually make a difference, that while it is not a cure might provide a stronger foundation of daily well-being.

<div>For the first time, we are asking for financial help for Sophie’s treatment—to pay for Sophie to receive twice weekly infusions to reboot her immune system, to help her with detoxification, and to address her complex genetic vitamin deficiencies. The infusion treatments help Sophie experience an unexpected base of relief—but they are expensive and not covered by insurance. A year of such treatments might make a big difference to her day-to-day functioning. That’s our hope.

<div>Sophie, of course, imagined she’d write another book to pay for them—but as her mama I am saying, “Sophie needs to rest, rest, rest, and rest.” Sophie will imagine those books this year and when she is stronger and her eyes are better, and she has more energy she will write them for us and we will, in turn, be healed by her vision and her wisdom. But right now let’s see if we can help her find firmer, healthier ground upon which to sit, stand, dance, and write.

<div>A year of infusions, every four days at $425 a shot, will cost us $38,250 and perhaps more as we are able to expand what treatments she can receive. In addition, we want to get Sophie an elliptical so she can sweat (detox) without driving (she is experiencing serious visual problems and driving is very hard right now) or going, with her compromised immune system, to the petri dish of the local gym. We are also budgeting an extra $12,000 for her insurance deductibles for the coming year. We already know she has a biopsy on the schedule and we just don’t want financial anxiety on top of all the other worries.

<div>Because of her complex eye and neurological issues Sophie is really limiting time on social media and all screens in general so I ask that you not bombard her with messages.

What we hope they will do is lessen a lot of the other issues and problems that have arisen because of her collagen dysfunction. Sophie is beautiful, she always looks great, she has fabulous manners, but please don’t ask if she is “all better.” It kinda makes her, and anyone dealing with long term illness, crazy. Also bombarding people with questions about their illness can make them feel crazy. The best question, the question that promotes intimacy, is “how are you doing right now?”

Empower Black Women in Medicine: Tossie and Honeybee

<div>My name is Kai, and last November I had an opportunity to accompany Jens Jarvie, Sarai Shapiro and nine other (mostly) Californians to undertake a Dieta at Kushi Ayahuasca, a forest healing and educational retreat center, deep in the amazingly biodiverse Amazonian rainforest near the Sierra del Divisor National Park in Contamana, Perú. <div>Here we learned the healing techniques and methods of Shipibo-Konibo healers who are preserving the ancestral understandings and traditions. It turns out that 15 hectares of land adjacent to the Retreat Center is currently for sale at the price of 1000 soles/hectare (which is basically $110 per ACRE!) On this land are several Shiohuahuaco trees that are estimated to be over 1,000 years old. This land is home to jaguars, monkeys, macaws and countless species. What's special about this opportunity to protect the rainforest is that the people who can steward and tend the land are already on-site regularly. Maestro Wexa Metsa and his Harvard-educated wife Macarena and all of the rest of the support family are deeply dedicated to land stewardship and preserving the ancestral traditions for the Benefit of All Life. All money collected from this fundraiser will go to this indigenous family, earmarked to enable the procurement of this additional forested land.

<div>We come to you today with heavy hearts and a plea for support for Nasha and Manny, who are experiencing an unimaginable challenge with their precious 5 month old, Ishaan Rue.

<div>On January third, Nasha and Manny faced the inconceivable on their way back from a family vacation when their son Ishaan started vomiting blood. Rushing to the nearest ER, a Kaiser facility in Fontana (without Kaiser insurance), they witnessed their baby's health deteriorate. With persistence, Ishaan received fluids and was then diagnosed with a UTI. Then, unexpectedly Ishaan went into cardiac arrest and a swarm of doctors and nurses crowded into the room to resuscitate him, making it the longest 10 minutes of his parents' lives.

<div>Transferred to UCLA Children's Hospital after troubling incidents at Kaiser, Ishaan underwent extensive tests. Initially attributed to a UTI, Nasha and Manny insisted on exploring other possibilities, leading to a critical discovery by a pediatric GI surgeon.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>An exploratory surgery uncovered a congenital band of skin around a portion of his small intestine, causing it to twist and block blood supply, resulting in bowel ischemia. They removed 20cm of the small intestine, leaving some slightly damaged parts that seemed likely to heal. Two days later, the surgeon deemed the remaining part healthy and they chose to connect it. However, over the next few days Ishaan's white blood cell count continued to rise, and his abdomen remained firm. After a few more days, a third surgery became necessary to remove the deteriorating bowel section initially considered healthy.

<div>Ishaan endured three abdominal surgeries, resulting in a temporary ostomy bag.
</div>

<div>Ishaan is continuing to recover in the hospital and in 6-8 weeks will need an additional surgery to reconnect his intestine and remove the ostomy bag.

<div>He is on a path to recovery, but the financial burden weighs heavily on his parents. Sleeping at the hospital since January 3rd, Nasha paused her private practice, and Manny is on leave.

<div>The road ahead is long and filled with medical complexities that no parent should ever have to endure. We know Nasha and Manny are grateful for the support and love they've received so far, and that's why we're launching this GoFundMe campaign. <div>The 13th of November, our beloved sister Brianne Mckenzie (Bri Colibri) suffered a very unfortunate accident trekking through the mountains of Santa Rosa de Lima, Mexico. Large stones came down from a rock ledge and struck her in the head and neck knocking her unconscious, fracturing her skull, and damaging several vertebra of her spinal column from the impact.

<div>It was a nearly fatal craniocerebral trauma accident, with multiple fractures in the skull, 5th and linear fracture of the 6th cervical vertebra, with displacement of the 5th vertebra towards the spinal cord.

Doctors worked on her from 9pm to 6am so as to replace a cervical vertebrae and place a metal mesh plate prosthesis to reinforce the medulla.

<div>Fortunately, she was blessed by some of the best doctors and surgeons in the city of Guanajuato as well as the powerful prayers of friends and family to save her life and prevent full body immobility.

<div>Bri is currently stable, but in intensive care life support to ensure her recovery from this tragic accident.
</div>

Water Tower for Struggling families in Peru.

<div>I'm reaching out to all members of the community and anyone feeling called to assist in helping my soul brother Victor Gonzalez Barbaran and his family build a home for them to live in. 
</div>
<div>Victor is a Shipibo man from the Ucayali region in Peru. He is the son of Shipibo Maestro Francisco Vargas; together, they assist in the healing of many people with the traditional medicine Ayahuasca. I have been working with Victor for the past two years and have witnessed the fantastic work he does so selflessly. Aside from providing medicines, he is an active member of the San Francisco native Shipibo community. 
</div>
<div>He endlessly works to help those in need, sometimes even putting his and his family's needs to the side in the process. Victor currently is the caretaker of a piece of land in Yarinacocha, and he has been asked to leave by the end of the month. I've visited his humble home, which is in the beginning stages of building. There is an immediate need to finish floors for them to at least be able to move into some comfort. Ultimately, the goal is to help them complete their home where he lives with his wife Julie and their four wonderful children. Victor is an exemplary father and husband. He makes the most significant efforts to send all his children to school and works very hard to provide for his whole family, which is quite large. He and his family are so generous; although they don't have much, they never hesitate to offer their hearts and homes to the service of others. Below you will find some photos of their home in its current state. We trust in the generosity of the community to help us reach our goal by the end of this month. Anything helps. On behalf of his family and our organization, we thank all who feel called to offer any assistance in this endeavor.

I have shared with many friends—perhaps a good experience for some, and for others not so much. However, this is part of the process I have been undertaking for a long time. For some, it's about healing and learning, finding inner peace, discovering the light. All of this has been a long journey to share with you, the message of plants to others, and with a lot of love and dedication.

<div>And now, I need your help. Ten years ago, I had an accident while practicing sports. I fractured my collarbone and a part of my rib, affecting all my nerves from my head to my feet. At first, I underwent treatments with medicinal plants, which gradually helped me control the pain and the affected area. I continued working like this for the past ten years. When I was younger, I didn't feel these pains much. But now, at 46 years old, I feel greatly affected. When the pandemic and COVID arrived, the pain became stronger. When I contracted COVID, I felt a lot of pain in the fractured area. My whole body was in pain—my organs, kidneys, and my back. Thanks to God, I recovered. California Wildfire Relief Fund For Eric James <br /><br /> On August 20, 2020, our son Eric James DeAratanha’s home and the recording studio he built from scratch on the bottom level, burned to the ground as the CZU Lightening Complex Fires raged through the Santa Cruz Mountains. Most importantly he is safe, but he lost everything, except what he could grab as he evacuated. <div>On December 14th, 2022, the current Peruvian government declared a state of emergency and imposed curfews in some cities and suspended some civil liberties like the rights to assembly and free movement within the country as well as the right to  "personal freedom and security". At this point, there have been 69 civilian deaths and 1658 injuries.

<div>These actions have hit the indigenous communities particularly hard, limiting the inhabitants travel, and access to essentials such as food and utilities. For example, the entire southern region was without gas for a week, causing many people who do not have access to firewood to be without the ability to cook for their families. Getting basic staples has become increasingly difficult for Peruvians and travel between communities has been severely restricted if not impossible.

<div>The actions by the government have also limited the number of visitors seeking indigenous healing services, as well as arts and crafts. This is creating an economic crisis for the communities who so generously share with us their healing traditions.

Urgent Support for Indigenous Communities in Peru

<div>My name is Amy and I unexpectedly rescued 30 very sick tortoises from an illegally-run 'rescue' in December. These tortoises belonged to the Joshua Tree Tortoise Rescue, operating under tax exemption status for donations. I was unable to locate public information on the legality of the Joshua Tree Tortoise Rescue, or determine if they ever had any desert tortoise permits. I was also unable to obtain any proof that the rescue was legally allowed to possess desert tortoises. Upon speaking with officials responsible for desert tortoises, I was told they had been operating without the proper permits necessary for years. None of the desert tortoises I rescued had paperwork identifying where they had come from, let alone permits. This rescue, now finally dissolved, has been operating and collecting donations for two decades or more and had well over 100 desert tortoises and close to 20 large sulcata tortoises in their possession at one point.

<div>By the time I was notified that their tortoises were in danger, most of the tortoises were unaccounted for or had perished. All I was able to find and remove alive from the Joshua Tree Tortoise Rescue were 24 desert tortoises and 6 sulcata tortoises. The sulcata tortoises, which do not brumate/hibernate, had no proper housing or any source of heat, which is critical this time of year. The desert tortoises were contained in small pens without proper shelter. All tortoises had no access to fresh water or food. Many dead tortoises remained on the property that were in varying stages of decomposition. One of the women listed on the tax-exemption form, Nonnie Saunders, helped me remove the tortoises, seemingly unfazed by the death and sickness around us on the property. I'm still unsure if we were able to find all the live tortoises underground.

<div>I immediately began working with Dr. Barton Huber and his wonderful team at the Animal Medical Center of Corona who provided immediate veterinary care to the tortoises. Veterinary bills have exceeded $10,000 and continue to grow. Dr. Ann McDowell at Chaparral Pet Hospital has also been very instrumental in providing free care for several sick tortoises and still has a few at her hospital that aren't stable enough to be fostered or adopted. Since the rescue, 3 desert tortoises have died as a result of neglect and improper care. All 24 desert tortoises had respiratory illnesses, including pneumonia. All required multiple treatments with antibiotics. 4 tortoises required tubes in their necks through which they were given medication, food, and fluids. This was necessary to save their lives, as they were too sick and emaciated to eat on their own. Bone, shell, skin fragments and plastic bags were found within their excrement and seen upon CT scans. Dr. Huber believes some were eating other tortoises as no other food source was provided for them. These tortoises do not eat meat or plastic bags - they did this out of desperation to survive. A necropsy was performed on one of the desert tortoises that died immediately after the rescue. Dr. Huber said there was nothing inside of it when he opened it up and scanned it, showing that it died from total starvation and dehydration.

<div>Supplies that very quickly had to be obtained included bins to house them in, lamps and bulbs to bring all tortoises up to at least 80 degrees, food, medication refills, and syringes. My electricity bill for the first month after the rescue came to $699.25. About 2000 miles have been driven to and from the veterinary offices - over 70 gallons of gas.

<div>Some amazing people, including Danielle Wall, known for her community rattlesnake relocation service, have stepped in to help and have spent their own money to accommodate the tortoise they are fostering or adopting. Danielle has a 55 lb sulcata tortoise in her home that has required weekly bandage changes for shell rot, due to it sitting in decomposing matter and exposure to dampness and cold temperatures. Some adopters are having to build enclosures for tortoises that weigh up to 100 lbs,

<div>or pay for tortoise food and supplies like large heating pads that are necessary this time of year, especially for a very sick animal.
</div>

<div>Desert tortoises were placed on the Federal Endangered Species List in 1990 with a current status of "threatened". Their status is currently under review and may be elevated to "endangered" in April of this year. As a tortoise-lover, seeing the level of suffering of these animals has been unimaginable. Many have been fostered or adopted but almost 10 are still requiring close attention and care.

<div>Please contribute to the overwhelming cost of this rescue as it is still ongoing and to the placement and set-up of stable tortoises in appropriate homes. 21 of the 24 desert tortoises rescued are still alive and fighting. All 6 sulcatas rescued are still alive and getting stronger each day.

Terrible news has been received, and we need your urgent support to assist Don Jose in getting his freedom back.<br /><br />On March 9, 2022, Don Jose was detained at Mexico City International Airport with Ayahuasca in his luggage. He was traveling to share his music and healing knowledge at a spirituality festival, and to conduct a few private ceremonies with some trusted friends. Unfortunately, he was prosecuted for drug trafficking.<br /><br />The Mexican justice system has stringent drug trafficking laws to the extent that this felony does not allow any possibility for release on bond pending trial. The controlled substance in question is DMT, one active ingredient present in the Ayahuasca brew in negligible milligrams per liter. However, the law, by not distinguishing quantities, charges the defendant as if the entire weight of the Ayahuasca brew consists of DMT. If Don Jose is convicted, he could face a minimum of 10 years in a Mexican prison.<br /><br />A very courageous team has supported Don Jose since his detention in various ways. Above all, by maintaining daily communication with him, and visiting him often to keep his spirit afloat, ensuring he is in a safe zone within the prison, bringing him books, quality meals and maintaining communication with his family members in Peru. We are fortunate to have such a magnificent and loyal group of friends working non-stop to develop alternatives to the legal aspects of this tragedy.<br /><br />A team of lawyer friends has hired two important law firms to lead the legal defense of Don Jose. They attended the case's initial hearing before the assigned Judge and could not have the case dismissed. The case is set for trial, but it has not been scheduled yet. In a country where the justice system is overwhelmed, this is a slow process that most likely takes months to complete. Meanwhile, Don Jose shall suffer the poor quality of prison life, something he doesn’t deserve.<br /><br />The best estimate of Don Jose's support team is that the cost of legal defense will exceed $100,000. Therefore, we appeal to the good spirit of the worldwide Ayahuasca community to contribute to the best of your financial capacity to allow us to face the enormous challenge before us. Derek was diagnosed with dermatofibrosarcoma protuberons (DFSP) in May of 2019.  The diagnosis is good and the plan of action “just” called for surgery.  After a little bit of a run around and a lot of waiting Derek had his first surgery on September 27th.  The surgery was a lot more invasive and complicated than expected but he made it through like a champ.  That being said the weeks that have passed proved to be more challenging with A LOT OF PAIN, infection, frustrations and now two more surgeries within 5 days of each other.  <br /><br />Not only has this been extremely stressful mentally but Allyx now has no choice but to go back to work as she is out of vacation/sick time.  Derek also needs help at home as daily tasks prove to be much more difficult than anticipated. <br /><br />Please, if you have a little extra to<br />give or want to help but are just too far...here is your chance.  Any amount of stress that we can relieve from two of the best, most<br />genuine people out there is worth a million bucks.  If you don’t have that I am sure they would take $5, $10, $50...really anything!  Let’s help lift this weight off of them!

Her struggle with late stage uterine cancer has been ongoing for years and her health is now worse than it has ever been. <br /><br />I recently brought her a one month supply of <strong>Ayahuma, Came Renaco, and Tamamuri</strong>, which when taken in combination has been effective in treating serious illness for many patients.  This plant-based remedy will need time to take effect and that is where <strong>Western medical care can keep her stable in the interim</strong>.<br /><br />Last night, on May 30, 2019, she was rushed to the hospital  in a<strong> life-threatening emergency</strong> and saved only by the blood donations of her close family members.  She continues to be interned at <strong>San Cristobal Clinic in Pucallpa</strong> where she is receiving regular blood transfusions, fluids, oxygen and antibiotics.<br /><br />Her family has always depended on Luzmila Mori's work as a healer for their financial stability, and is in <strong>urgent need of help to cover Luzmila's immediate medical expenses, which is approximately 4000 soles or  1182 USD.</strong><br /><br />Anything beyond the immediate amount needed raised will be used for the purchase of further plant remedies (Ayahuma, Came Renaco, and Tamamuri) as well as cover additional medical expenses should she be hospitalized once again.<br /><br /><img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/39609504_155933816494848_r.jpeg" alt="39609504_155933816494848_r.jpeg" width="100%" media_type="3" /><br />No contribution is too small in this time of need as we continue to pray for her full recovery.  <br /><br />I hope all those who were <strong>touched by Luzmila's healing icaros and loving presence</strong>, as well as the <strong>greater medicine family that have benefited from this ancient tradition of healing</strong>, can come together to support Luzmila in her time of greatest need.<br /><br />Thank you.  Irake  Gracias.<br /><br />Michael

Save the Life of Shipiba Curandera Luzmila Mori!

Protecting our babies by all means necessary. Saveafox Rescue has many concerns with recent threats towards our furbabies. We have recording of such threats posted on our Instagram Mikdolittles_animals And we need help to up our security. We have the foxes protected with top quality kennels which they are put in at bedtime, protected with a perimeter fence. We also have some security cameras currently installed. We did all we could budget without further fundraising. But we need the whole property secure for the animals safety. That means a people proof fence around the whole property (that is almost 2000 lineal feet) along with the driveway gated. It is sad we need to protect the foxes from people. But with the threats i am scared they may posion them by throwing stuff in their area. I do not sleep because i am constantly checking on them. We need a fence with top angle to keep people uninvited OUT. We need more security cameras with audio because of recent accusations that our foxes are loud...they are not. We need to back up all these false accusations that can put the rescue in Jeopardy.

<p><br /><img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/28200318_1521606181.5379_funddescription.jpg" alt="28200318_1521606181.5379_funddescription" /><br /><img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/28200318_1521606132.5065_funddescription.jpg" alt="28200318_1521606132.5065_funddescription" />Q was a delightful golden Border Collie, who is a staff and volunteer favorite at Famous Fido Rescue.  He was a perfect gentleman and the sweetest, most loving creature who would lay his head on you and put his arms around your waist in a human-like hug.  He had been with us for almost two years.  His guardian was a homeless man who continued to be down on his luck and had failed to stabilize his life enough to find a home for him and the dog.<br /><br />Dearest Q has passed away in his sleep after having made it through cancer surgery. Ginger Rogers, our adorable 15-yr. old chihuahua also passed on the same day while hospitalized with Q.   She had multple age-related illnesses.  A tough one for all of us at Famous Fido, but we remain hopeful tbat we can give our other seniors a fighting chance to have as long of a life as possible in hospice, knowing that they are loved and safe. As such, this fund is now a Tribute and Memorial to dear, dear Q and sweetest Ginger.  They  will be looking down from the Rainbow Bridge and will be rooting for all of their fellow  seniors and those severely ill, that they can have a second chance at a longer life by getting critical veterinary care when needed. Please give as much as you can. Every bit helps.  We WILL save lives together!</p>

Our baby girl Aubrey was in a bike accident while training for this years AIDS Lifecycle. She is in a critical state right now and has a ton of support here for her speedy recovery. We'd like to raise some funds to help with travel expenses, food and accommodations for her family that is doing everything to get here. <div>The Shipibo are one of many Indigenous groups of the Amazon Rainforest in Peru. This fundraiser aims to support several schools of the Shipibo communities, and we are excited to continue to branch our in support of additional Shipibo schools throughout the region. Past fundraisers have supported the school of Axeti Nete located in the Panaillo community on the Uacayali River, and Bena Jema located in Pucallpa.

<div>These schools teach subjects including math, science, art, and language. As schools of an indigenous culture, they also incorporate teachings of their community, such as weaving, embroidery, making arrows, and other traditional handicrafts. The initial grades teach children ages from 3 years old to 5 years old. The primary grades teach children ages from 6 years old to 13 years old. After they turn 13, it is common for them to work with their family and in their community or farming, planting bananas and yucca.

<div>The Shipibo communities do not receive government assistance, and with many children from poverty-stricken families who cannot financially support their needs, many essential resources are scarce. Both schools infrastructure are also restricted by lack of finances. They have very few furnishings, such as chairs and tables, or even basic school supplies.
