It is with a broken heart we ask for funeral and family support for Micah Brave Deer Washington. Micah, son of Michael and Bettina (Malonson) Washington, died unexpectedly at the young age of 32. His parents were completely blindsided when they were notified on Wednesday night, December 21st. Micah was a member of the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head of Aquinnah and the grandson of the late Chief Donald Malonson and the nephew of the current Chief Ryan Malonson.

Micah cared very deeply for his tribal family and was passionate about the well-being of the youth and future generations. Micah loved being in his traditional homelands of Aquinnah and he could often be found camping out in the woods of his family homestead. Micah shared a deep brotherhood with many of the young men of the tribe. You could always find him involved in community projects like building the wetu, burning out the canoe, and helping out at pow-wows.

Like too many of our young people, Micah often struggled and was often frustrated by the many challenges tribal communities face. He wanted nothing more than to have a healthy engaged tribal community. He spoke often of standing together, inclusivity, mutual respect and accountability. Micah was taken from this world too early and he will be deeply missed.

Micah's Services will be held Thursday, January 5th at Chapman, Cole & Gleason in Bridgewater (10-12 Viewing and 12-1 Service; Repast: TBA). He will be brought home to Aquinnah on Friday, January 6th (Tribal Community Center: 10-12 Viewing and 12-1 Service Aquinnah Cemetary: 1:30-2:30 Graveside Services There will be a repast following at the Tribal Community Center)

We are asking for support to help pay for these unexpected funeral costs and to help the family during this very difficult time.

Micah Brave Deer Washington Funeral Support

We are raising money for our community member Tunji, who is formerly incarcerated and recently lost his job.

From Tunji: "It's been really difficult to find another job, especially in the field that I love to work in. Majority of the time, I stand in the fight for social justice and criminal justice reform. I am a member of DARE's Behind the Walls Committee and Black & Pink Providence. These orgs stand in the fight for our returning citizens to make sure they have a fair chance at employment and housing while holding a safe space for impacted people. I am the father of two boys, a partner and a friend. Please help me to catch up and get by another month of bills, rent, vehicle insurance, etc. to support my family while I continue looking for work."

It is extremely difficult for people with records to find work - no matter how much time has gone by, we still carry the stigma - and cost of living is skyrocketing. Please share and support however you can!

Help our community member get back on his feet

Hello, thank you for stopping by. My name is Jae. I’ve gone by the name of Jae for roughly 4 years, some know me by other names that no longer even register for a response. I remember clear as day when I chose to refer to myself as Jae. I was working at a restaurant called Cafeteria in NYC, 2 years into my transition. The most beautiful trans woman I’d ever seen smiled my way and when I told her I couldn’t help but stare— she was so beautiful—she asked my name. I told her and she said, “well you sure don’t look like a [redacted]! Give it some thought.”, smiled at me and we went back on our merry ways. That woman was right, I was denying myself something that brought me limitless joy and freedom. When I was going by my former name it created many roadblocks for people who knew me and were confused on how to address me. I also realized I put roadblocks on my own transition out of fear!

Roughly a year and a half ago I started my medical transition under the supervision of the impeccable staff at Callen-Lorde Community Health Center. Half a year indoors with no events, no reason to put make up on, or dress the part, made me sit with myself and have an honest conversation, “you’re depressed, you’re dysphoric, and you’re unhappy.” Dysphoria is the feeling Trans identifying people feel, much like anxiety, that is triggered by not relating with what they see before them. I was being revered as Jae but waking up looking like my old self was a terrifyingly triggering. I knew the next step had to be to see a medical professional.

In my first meeting with my Doctor at Callen-Lorde, he asked me about surgery. I paused, unsure of what my future would look like. I said, “As a non-binary person I’m not sure what surgery would entail… so maybe it’s not for me.” He smiled and said, “Be patient with yourself. Once we start this journey on HRT (hormone replacement therapy) you might find some of those opinions shifting in time. Let’s check in in a year.” He was right. Once I grew the first bit of breast tissue I was beaming. Being on HRT was like having a heavy fog lifted from my mind and spirit. When an individual undergoes HRT the brain begins to relax. You can begin unlocking certain childhood memories that were once packed away by your mind to keep you safe from your own survival trauma. This past year has been exactly that. I’ve started to connect the dots of my gender with my childhood. I’ve found better and more accurate language to describe these anxieties I’ve wrestled since coming into my adolescence.

Transitioning is an expensive feat, one that is a privilege and not in the grasp of every person transitioning. I’ve accepted there are things about my body I cannot change under diet and exercise alone, things that are just too far gone for me to be simply make do with. These things still trigger my dysphoria no matter how much make up, waist cinching, skyrocketing fashion I wear on any given day. Often, I’ve found myself constricting my body to create the ideal shape that will put my dysphoria at ease, but this very tool limits my mobility and ability to make it out of a potentially violent scenario alive. These small adjustments can be lifesaving, not just for my own mental health but in terms of how my body and face read in a space.

I thank you ahead of time for donating, sharing, or for simply acknowledging my struggle. This journey is far from over but with your help I can make my dreams come true for a happier, fulfilled, and safer life. Any donations made to me will be used to pay hospital related bills, post-operative care, and survival funds during the recovery period where I will be out of work for three-six weeks. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you.

Sincerely,

Seng Hak Oum was a loving husband of 32 years to my mom Noun, a caring and supportive father to myself and my two siblings Dara and Chanceny and playful grandfather to Nathaniel and Eliana. An expert fisherman and craftsman around the house, Hak was skilled wherever he directed his efforts. He frequently made my family laugh by cracking jokes at my mom and lightening dark situations with his smile.

Despite having the strength to overcome the toughest obstacles anyone could be asked to endure, he remained humble and accepting of everyone. Anyone that was close to my father knew he was always supportive and believed in them to accomplish their goals, no matter the circumstances.

No words can describe how unfair and painful his loss is. His sudden and unexpected passing has left my family in a difficult situation and any help would be greatly appreciated.

Venmo @Chandakhea
Cashapp $chanceny

The Salt Eaters Bookshop is an emerging independent, Black woman-owned bookstore based in Los Angeles prioritizing books by and about Black women and girls, femmes, and non-binary folks.

The Salt Eaters Bookshop aims to create a Black feminist literary hub and resting ground for dreamers, seekers of knowledge, creatives, writers, community archivists, artists, change agents, and those invested in a liberation practice that holds Black women, girls, femmes, and non-binary folks at the center.

Currently, we are in the process of securing our dream space in our dream location of Downtown Inglewood, located - fittingly - on Queen St.

We envision our shop lined with books, art, comfortable seating, a space available for co-working, and a printing press serving local Black writers and creatives.

We need your help to make the first bookstore of its kind possible.

According to the 2018 survey conducted by small business financing firm, Guidant Financial, 80% of Black entrepreneurs surveyed said lack of capital was the most challenging aspect of running a business. According to ProjectDiane, only 0.2% of all venture capital funding was allocated toward startups founded by Black women in 2016.

We are crowdfunding $65,000 of start-up costs to ensure our efforts to create a liberatory-based community space have a long lasting, and sustainable promising future.

Our start-up cost breakdown:

*Monthly rent: $1,800 x 12 months = $21, 600

Utilities + misc repairs x 12 months: $1,200

Renovation/build-out costs: $25,000

External/internal signs + furnishings: $7, 200

Operating expenses: $10,000

Total: $65,000

*Given our renovation costs, build-out timeline, COVID-19 restrictions, and our anticipated opening date of Jan 2021, monthly rental funds will be allocated to our first year open to the public for business.

In the words of ancestor Toni Cade Bambara, “The dream is real, my friends.” We hope you’ll join us in building the reality we need for the future we deserve.

Stay tuned to our instagram for updates on what we’ve got planned for 2020 and 2021 and additional ways you can support.

Thank you in advance for your non-monetary expressions of support via affirmation, good energies, and shares.
.
.
.
.
.
.
About the organizer:

My name is Asha Grant. I'm a Los Angeles native, freelance creative media consultant, bookworm, and director of The Free Black Women's Library - Los Angeles (a Black feminist traveling book swap).

Ever since I was a tiny, safehouses for me have been libraries and independent bookstores. In indie bookstores, I had the room as a Black girl to be brave with my curiosities, affirmed by characters in places I knew and wanted to know, and comfortable knowing I was surrounded by folks who, too, loved the community built around a good story.

Through my work in launching + sustaining @thefreeblackwomenslibrary_la, I’ve been able to create mini literary safehouses for us all throughout the city, lugging tubs of books in my car and cramming bags of craft supplies in my trunk to community centered businesses and museums who hosted us for little to nothing and loved on us more than I can express. It’s been a beautiful, humbling journey. It is far from over.

Last fall, I began looking for spaces. It marked my first step in claiming the vision - a loving and inviting bookshop dedicated to prioritizing books, comics, and zines by and about Black women, girls, femmes, and non-binary folks. A resting ground. A brave space. A Black place. A quiet nook to visit and read and print after school. Somewhere for the babies to have storytime. A place to nerd out in and be cool in and feel loved.

I been working on the vision - crunching the numbers, meeting with the realtor, planning with my contractor, designing mood boards, brainstorming programming, and praying. Nightly. Sometimes all throughout the day. It’s the dream I can’t shake and I’m rolling with it. It is sooo close.

The Salt Eaters, is derived from Toni Cade Bambara’s book THE SALT EATERS that provided my first in depth, and, admittedly, destabilizing look into the murky waters of mental health for folks that looked like me and expanded my understanding of wholeness (“no trifling matter”), interdependency, astrology, Black feminism, and beyond. Her unwavering principles and ethics guide both my personal and professional endeavors, leading me here.

Close Up is a civics-based, non-partisan field trip to Washington D.C, where students get a chance to see how our government works ‘close up’. This year there are a total of 19 students from Nathan Bishop Middle School, in Providence, R.I., attending the trip, on May 19th-22nd, 2019. Our students will meet their peers from around the country, visit important sites, learn how our government works, participate in Mock Congresses, and most importantly, learn the art of civil discourse!

Our school is diverse and we want that to be represented on this trip. Many of our students come from challenging socio-economic backgrounds and at $1,445 per student, several are not able to afford the cost of the trip on their own. In order to support every 8th grader who wants to attend, we have implemented an ambitious fundraising campaign. Every Friday morning at 7:15 am, the Close-Up students hold a “Cougar Café” selling hot chocolate and baked goods. A school dance is schedule for March and a yard sale is planned in April at Nathan Bishop. However, despite our best efforts, we may come up short of money necessary to make this experience a reality for our most needy students.

We know that our fundraising goal is ambitious, but with your help we know we can succeed and ensure that every student who wants to attend gets the opportunity to participate in this amazing program. A donation of any amount will get us closer to this goal!! If you feel that civics-based education is important and civil discourse is important to our democracy then DONATE NOW to the Nathan Bishop Close Up fund. Any and all donations will gladly be accepted until May 1st, 2019.

Today we lost a great friend in a motorcycle accident. I, as in many other went to school with him, he was always there when someone needed him. He had so many people that cared about him. I would like to help out his family and try to raise money to help with expenses.
