<div>It is with heavy hearts that we share the unexpected passing of Gustavo Barroso, a beloved member of the MiraCosta Police Department family, who tragically passed away in his sleep at just 29 years old. Gus was more than a dedicated police officer—he was a son, brother, and friend whose kindness and generosity touched everyone he met.

<div>Gus leaves behind his loving parents, Gustavo “Pops” Sr. and Martha, his brother Andy, his sisters Mayra and Mia, and his cherished dog, Apollo. His absence leaves an immeasurable void for his family, friends, and colleagues.

<div>Gus was passionate about his faith, his family, his career, and his community. He had a heart of gold, always ready to lend a hand or share a smile. Sundays were his favorite—playing volleyball after church and encouraging others to join in the fun. His laughter and warmth will be deeply missed.

<div>Gus’s journey to becoming a police officer was fueled by his love for MiraCosta College. He attended MiraCosta College and ultimately earned a bachelor’s degree in criminology and justice studies from Cal State University San Marcos.

<div>Determined to serve the community he cherished, Gus attended the Palomar College Police Academy and immediately applied to the MiraCosta College Police Department with the intention of dedicating his career to the college he loved so much. His commitment and pride in his role were evident every day he wore the badge.

<div>This fund has been created to support Gus’s family during this difficult time and help with funeral expenses. Any contribution, big or small, will make a difference as they navigate this unimaginable loss.

</div>Why Prevention is the Only Way:<br /><br /> As many of you know, I’ve been deep in the trenches of the teen mental health crisis. Over $4.7 billion has been spent in California alone, yet things are getting worse every year. Why? <br /><br />Because current programs are "reactive"—they wait for a student to hit a breaking point before intervening.  
My goal is to fireproof the building before the fire even starts.  
<br /><br />By putting a "playbook for life" into every student’s backpack, we do what traditional programs can't:<br />
• Remove the Label: When every student has the book, it’s just a tool like a calculator. No one is singled out as "at-risk" or "weak".  
<br />• Give Them Privacy: 85% of teens believe they should handle problems alone. This guide gives them a private way to find tools and habits on their own terms.  
• Shift the Culture: When friends realize they’re all looking at the same info, vulnerability becomes shared. They start supporting each other before things escalate.  
<br /><br /> I know some of you might be skeptical because you don't see it every day. But after thousands of conversations with parents and teens, I can tell you: the silence is what makes it dangerous.  
<br /><br />I totally get that things are tight and many of us live paycheck to paycheck. But if everyone just gave $1, this would work! Your $1 helps fund the first school, which then unlocks the district funding for all the others.
