<div><strong>The Hardest Race of My Life</strong>
</div>
<div>I am an athlete. For the past 16 years, endurance sports have been a major part of my life.

<div>In October of 2024, I competed at the Triathlon World Championships and placed 15th in the world in my age group.

<div>There were delays waiting for appointments, pathology, scans, and treatment plans. When immunotherapy finally began, there was hope it might be working — until my immune system severely attacked my liver, forcing treatment to pause.

<div><strong>The Treatment Exists — But Time Is Running Out</strong>
</div>
<div>My care has been transferred to Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH), I’m receiving the absolute best care possible available here in Canada. I whole-heartedly trust my medical oncologist is doing everything he possibly can for me. He believes I am a strong candidate for an advanced treatment called TIL Therapy (Tumour-Infiltrating Lymphocyte Therapy). He was involved in the trials at PMH before they closed, he knows this therapy well.
</div>
<div>This groundbreaking treatment uses a patient’s own immune cells to attack cancer. It has produced remarkable outcomes in some advanced melanoma patients — including patients who had already exhausted other options.
</div>
<div>This treatment is real.
</div>
<div>It exists.
</div>
<div>It has been approved in the United States.
</div>
<div>It has also received conditional approval by Health Canada.
</div>
<div>But access in Canada is not yet available. The Ontario funding pathways are not moving at the speed my cancer requires.
</div>
<div>My doctors have been clear:
</div>
<div>TIL Therapy is the best next step for me. My window for TIL therapy is now.
</div>
<div>I have an urgent consultation scheduled at the renowned Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa Bay Florida on June 3rd to explore TIL Therapy. My oncologist has advised the medical team at Moffitt that TIL therapy is my best treatment option.
</div>
<div>I’m working with Moffitt’s International Patient Coordinator and already received the treatment quote. For TIL therapy at Moffitt Cancer Centre, for a self-funded Canadian patient, the total upfront funds needed is $1.7 million CAD.
</div>
<div>Cancer does not wait for paperwork.
</div>
<div>Cancer does not wait for funding approvals.
</div>
<div>Cancer does not wait for bureaucracy.
</div>
<div>Every day matters and I need to secure this funding in the coming weeks. If on June 3rd, the medical team at Moffitt confirms the same as my medical oncologist at PMH – that I am a strong candidate for TIL Therapy – the next step will be payment in full, before treatment can be scheduled and begin.

<li>OHIP Out of Country: My oncologist has submitted an application for OHIP out-of-country funding. My hope is that the province of Ontario will come through for me and my family and that I will be able to refund donations nor accept any pledge payments.

<li>Iovance Biotherapeutics Compassionate Care Use: This is the provider of the TIL therapy - I am currently inquiring about compassionate access which would help reduce the overall cost to me significantly.

As safety standards have evolved, both slides have had to be removed, and the structure can no longer safely serve our children.

Help Us Build a New Playground for Waverley’s Kids!

<div>Azeza never imagined she would have to walk this road twice.

<div>Years ago, her family lost their son named Hiatham to Lafora Disease, a rare and devastating neurological condition that causes relentless seizures and slowly takes away a child’s ability to move, speak, and live independently. Just weeks after that loss, her son Gigi was diagnosed with the same disease.

</div>
<div>Today, Gigi is 16 years old and in the late stages of Lafora. His 17th birthday is coming soon, and Azeza is doing everything she can to make the time he has left filled with comfort, dignity, and love.
</div>

<div>We spent the day with Azeza and her family and saw firsthand what strength looks like.
</div>

</div>
<div>Gigi lives at home with his parents and his younger brothers, Thayer (9) and Abdul (2). Their father, Elayyan, has faced serious health challenges of his own, including cancer, a heart attack, and ongoing medical complications that have made it impossible for him to work. For years, Azeza has carried much of the weight of supporting the family financially, often working long hospital shifts while also caring for Gigi. As Gigi’s condition progressed, and Azeza’s own medical complications, she had no choice but to step away from work so she could be by his side full-time.

<div>Now the family is struggling to keep up with bills, including their mortgage, while navigating one of the most difficult seasons of their lives.

<div>Their home is not accessible for Gigi’s needs. Because he cannot be safely carried upstairs, he sleeps on the main floor, and Azeza currently bathes him in the garage using heated water because the shower is inaccessible. A wheelchair-accessible van and home modifications would dramatically improve his comfort and allow the family to move through daily life with more dignity and safety.

<div>What stood out most to us was Azeza’s heart. Even through exhaustion and grief, she continues to fight every day for her children. Her greatest wish right now is simple: to spend meaningful, peaceful time with Gigi without the constant pressure of financial stress.

<div>Lafora Disease has no cure. Most children affected do not live past early adulthood. While we cannot change the diagnosis, we can come together as a community to make sure this family does not face this chapter alone.

Their father passed away, and their mother has now run away to a different city; abandoning them completely. <div>Right now, <a href="https://www.thestar.com/news/gta/2023/07/05/we-are-afraid-asylum-seekers-sleeping-on-the-street-amid-tug-of-war-between-city-and-feds.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">refugee claimants and asylum seekers are stranded</a> and sleeping on the sidewalk outside of 129 Peter Street, a City of Toronto building that refers unhoused people into shelter space. These folks are not seeing workers, and are <a href="https://twitter.com/lorrainelamchop/status/1676939063075454977" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">not being provided with basic necessities</a> like water or food.

<div>Last May, the City of Toronto announced that it would begin the process of referring <a href="https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/toronto-shelters-rising-demand-homelessness-refugees-1.6860782" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">refugee claimants outside of its shelter system</a> — a high-risk strategy to secure shelter funding for refugees from the federal government. As it stands, the Liberal federal government is not providing money to Toronto to ensure that refugee claimants — a federal responsibility — are provided with shelter and supports. In fact, $157 million in funds for this very purpose were promised by the federal government; however, none of this money has materialized. This is shameful, and it has created a human rights disaster where human lives are being used as a political football, with those ultimately responsible — the feds — turning a blind eye. All of Toronto's federal ridings currently have a Liberal MP. While the City's actions are unacceptable, ultimately the federal government must step up.

Our dear friend, Alex, is enduring an unimaginable tragedy. On July 5th, her beautiful and vibrant six-year-old daughter, Charlotte, was involved in a tragic accident and sadly has since passed away. The sudden loss of such a young, energetic, and joyful soul has left Alex and her older daughter, Izabelle, devastated.

As you can imagine this tragedy has left them distraught. <div>On 4-15-23, two year old Hailey Summer died unexpectedly in her sleep. She had Tuberous Sclerosis Complex and epilepsy but was doing wonderfully and was seizure free for over a year. They are waiting for confirmation but at this time it is believed she died from SUDEP (sudden unexpected death in epilepsy).

This tragic accident with a fire has left Allison with severe 2nd and 3rd degree burns to her face, neck, shoulders, and chest. <p><strong>Resilient. Courageous. Tenacious.</strong><br /><br />That’s how we’d all describe my sister, Sarah Pinto, in her continued battle against Lyme Disease since 2016.<br /><br />For those of you that don’t know Sarah, she began to experience her symptoms shortly after a graduation trip to Western Canada (British Columbia &amp; Alberta). Leading up to her return to Toronto she started to feel a number of concerning ailments, which included: body-weakening sensations (tingling, burning, numbness) as well as severe migraines.<br /><br />These symptoms unfortunately did not pass or subside and in fact, only continued to worsen – which brought Sarah to the Emergency Room on a number of occasions and did little to improve her worsening condition.<br /><br />In an effort to understand her symptoms – for the next 3 years Sarah would undergo:<br /><br />1.       Multiple trips to Doctors/Specialists, Physiotherapists, Neurologists – all of which were unable to properly diagnose her condition<br /><br />2.       Multiple MRIs, Cat Scans, Treatments – all of which turned up no new information<br /><br />3.       As well as extensive research in understanding what support mechanisms exist in Canada that are not cost prohibitive<br /><br />It was only after enduring the cost of private testing overseas in both the United States &amp; Germany, was Sarah diagnosed for Lyme Disease &amp; Co-Infections  (albeit, 3-years later). Her struggle for a diagnosis was in large part due to the limited resources available across Canada that can properly diagnose this disease early, which often leads many (like Sarah) to be misdiagnosed. Because of the many years of misdiagnosis and in the absence of a formalized treatment plan, Sarah has and continues to endure much physical strain &amp; pain.<br /><br />Over the last 2-years Sarah has left no stone unturned and has sought a number of treatment plans ranging from: antibiotics, Bee-Venom therapy, dietary changes to everything in between.<br /><br />To support Sarah’s journey toward a healthy future, she’s looking to begin treatment at the Hoffman Centre for Integrative &amp; Functional Medicine to deal with Mast Cell Activation Syndrome and Mold Illness brought on by Lyme disease.

Support Sarah’s Lyme Disease Treatment Journey

<p>Hi my name is Khaleel Seivwright, I am a carpenter and I've raised money to rent a garage and buy materials for building durable insulated tiny shelters for homeless people across Toronto who might be living outside this winter. These tiny shelters are designed to be mainly heated by body heat and because of their size and the insulation value of the walls ceiling and floor just body heat alone should be enough to keep the shelter around 16 degrees Celsius in -20 temperatures. This will also depend on the quality of construction. <br /><br />I am also accepting donations of building materials such as:<br /><br />Insulation<br />Plywood<br />small double or triple glazed windows <br />2x4 and 2x6 <br />6mm poly<br />tyvek or other house wrap<br />door hinges and latches<br />tuck tape<br />siding materials<br />roofing materials<br /><br /><br />This first shelter which does not have completed siding yet cost about $1000 dollars to build with brand new material. I plan on using the the possible 20,000 to pay for this space which is $450 a month to store material and build in a controlled environment. The rest of the money would be used on building supplies. If there is enough interest in this project I will work on these structures full time.<br /><br />I'm excited to do this because I know it can work, I love designing and building different interesting ideas and I know it might help atleast a few people get through this winter who might not and others in the future as well. As shelters are usually at capacity at some point in the winter in Toronto and also because of this coronavirus, making space to allow for social distancing will put even more strain on Toronto's capacity.  For some its more difficult to find a shelter that can accommodate them and their pets or belongings and others refuse to be in shelters for other reasons. I am building these shelters for those that will live outside this winter.<br /><br />I will be posting updates of progress and the building of each shelter as this goes on. Toronto Tiny Shelters

It is with great sadness and regret that we must share with you the reason we started this fundraiser. With absolute heartache, IBEW Local 1620 member, Tyler Pardy of Grand -Le-Pierre, yesterday lost his partner - the love of his life, Siobbhan Nancy Sheppard. <br /><br />Tyler and Siobbhan have been together for 10 plus years and only just welcomed twin baby boys, TJ and Kobe, on April 1, 2020. The journey to welcoming these twins was a long and hard one. Siobbhan went into early labour on March 21st and was taken to the Health Science Centre in St. John’s. With success, the doctors were able to delay the labour - until April 1st - just in time for Daddy Tyler to finish his self-imposed Covid-19 quarantine, after being laid off from his job in Ontario.<br /><br />Tyler and Siobbhan could not have been happier! They were about to embark on the next journey in their lives. The journey would not be an easy one, as the twins were born early at 29 weeks, leaving them extremely premature that will require care at the NIC Unit in the Janeway Hospital in St. John’s. This is almost 250 km from their home. <br /><br />In the days since the baby’s birth, the twins have proven that the will to live is strong and with the care they are receiving, they have been growing wonderfully. However, they will need to stay at the hospital until their expected due date of June 15, 2020.  <br /><br />Once the babies were proving to be more than stable, Siobbhan was discharged and given the option to go home to rest and gather some belongings for herself and the boys. She and Tyler did so willingly and had planned to return on Saturday to prepare for the exciting event of finally being able to hold their babies on Sunday. However, life had other plans in store for them. Sadly, Siobbhan passed away late last evening after what is believed to be due to complications from childbirth.<br /><br />Tyler and his precious sons need all the love and help they can get right now. Travel to and from the hospital, accommodations, funeral costs are just a few of the unexpected expenses that Tyler will be facing during this heart wrenching time, in these already uncertain times.<br /><br />To show our support and in an effort to help Tyler and his twin babies in this trying time, IBEW Local 1620 has started this GoFundMe page and have donated $1,500.00 to kickstart our efforts to raise as much as possible. KCNB1 - related disorder. There are less than 100 cases worldwide and finding a Doctor who is familiar with this disorder is very difficult. I have more of an understanding of this disorder than her Doctors!

(she has yet to meet one!) Meet all these other families who GET IT!<br /><br />I always knew my daughter was a special grade, I just didn’t know how rare she was! <br /><br />I would greatly appreciate any help to make this happen for the both of us! To better understand the disorder and to better understand my daughter specifically! Many things about my daughter is still unanswered cause there aren’t many Doctors who understand it and so it gets coughed up to “It’s due to her disorder”.   I’m not ok with that response because it’s my job to get a better understanding of this while she’s young so I may be able to provide a brighter future for her!

KCNB1 WARRIOR

My name is Na’Shantéa Miller and I was once told that I wouldn’t get far with a name like “Na’Shantéa.” However, I would be lying if I told you that these types of comments are at the heart of my experiences.<br /><br /> Negatives comments, such as…<br /><br />·  “You’re stupid” – an undergraduate professor when I was getting help during office hours<br />·  “You don’t have what it takes to get into Harvard” – a co-worker <br /><br /> …were overshadowed by the words of advice and encouragement from teachers and mentors who pushed and reminded me to put everything into perspective: <br /><br />· “If you keep working as hard as you do, you’re going to go far.” – Mr. Pick (grade 5 teacher)<br />· “You need to calm down and relax. If you don’t learn to do that, you’re going to send yourself to an early grave” – Mrs. Brownlow (grade 8 teacher) <br />· “You’re going to be the President of North America/the world. We know that position doesn’t exist yet, but you will.” – Mr. Barrett and Ms. Gibbs (grade 11 and 12 basketball coaches)<br /><br />I applied to Harvard not because I expected to get in, but because I was living out one of my life mottos: “the only thing worse than rejection is not knowing.” I didn’t want to wonder “what if,” but instead apply, be rejected, and tell myself that at least I tried. I may sound a bit negative, but who applies to Harvard thinking they will get accepted? Definitely not me. <br /><br />But the opposite happened – I got accepted to pursue a Master in Public Policy with a concentration in Business and Government Policy in the Harvard Kennedy School! This graduate school focuses on service and doing good in the community, which aligns with my mission as a community-minded individual with a passion for creating positive change. With this degree, I want to draft public policies that incentivize more meaningful corporate citizenship initiatives as sustainable solutions to social problems because I believe in the positive power of business. Businesses have the financial power to make a massive difference in the world so I want to transform the common narrative of businesses causing social problems to proactively combating them. However, there is an obstacle in the way – the cost of attending Harvard. <br /><br />The total cost of Harvard tuition and housing expenses is $84,670 USD per year for two years, which is the equivalent of $113,106.42 CAD per year. I applied to financial aid at Harvard and was hoping that I would receive some help, but I didn’t because of limited funding. Most of the funding offered by Harvard Kennedy School isn't even based on financial need. The reality is that the sum of my personal and parental savings of $37,281.34 CAD is not nearly enough to cover these expenses. However, in order to secure my U.S. student visa to attend Harvard, I need to provide evidence of $75,824.66 CAD (first year tuition) by June 15, 2019. I was almost going to turn down my offer, but I was reminded that if I don’t put myself out there and ask for help, I won’t know what will happen. After all, the only thing worse than rejection is not knowing.<br /><br />As a product of mentorship, I have been committed to paying it forward. I am currently a mentor in a program called Leadership by Design, which aims to support Black high school students in the Greater Toronto Area in their leadership development.  Any support that I receive from this fundraising campaign will also be used to pay it forward by dedicating 5% to providing scholarships to other students and the another 5% will go to a rural community in Gulu, Uganda that Mama Latigo, my former high school guidance counsellor and mentor, has been supporting for the past 7 years. Through her efforts, the Olwiyo Faith School and Orphanage Centre now has latrines, a kitchen, a well, and seven classrooms. The Olwiyo community is now looking for funds to roof the classrooms.<br /><br />My story is just one example of the power of teachers and mentors. Their role in my life has been so significant that I’ve always said that there will be a table of teachers and mentors at my wedding. There are scholarships and grants, but they are difficult to come by as an international student. I have been scouring the internet for Canadian scholarships that do not hold the common requirement of attending a Canadian institution and for American scholarships that do not hold the typical condition of being a U.S. citizen. For example, I went through a scholarship database that listed more than 1,000 scholarships and was able to identify five that I can apply for. My goal is to apply for as many scholarships as possible for a combined value of $100,000 USD in the hopes of covering one year of tuition. If it means writing a short story from the perspective of a crane to earn $500 USD (this is actually a scholarship prompt), I’ll do it. Most of the ones that I have found so far are valued at $1000 so that means I’m going to have to apply for 100 scholarships. However, there is no guarantee that I will get these scholarships and I will definitely not be able to secure the funds before the deadline so I’m also trying to raise money to cover the first year of tuition. <br /><br /> 2.     Some people receive more than the amount listed. If this is the case, what do you plan on doing with the money? <br /><br />Receiving enough support to help cover one year of tuition would already be unbelievable. If you would like to further support me for the second year of tuition, I would be extremely grateful but that is more than I could ever ask for. 10% of anything raised will go back to the community (5% for scholarships and 5% to the rural community in Uganda). Funds covering more than the second year of tuition will be evenly split between the two causes.

Sam's Story<br /><br />This past Labor Day long weekend Sam suffered a horrendous accident. A typical jump into the lake off the dock went wrong and resulted in a broken neck and damage to his spinal cord.  He was airlifted to Sunnybrook Hospital and underwent emergency surgery. After a very lengthy surgery, his family was told that he will have no use of his legs and possibly his hands as well. <br /><br />Samuel is still a young man at 23 years old. He has faced many challenges, growing up in a home with a father who struggled with addictions that led to a family being torn apart and eventually the death of his father 3 years ago. After the death of his father, it seemed like Sam might follow in his father's footsteps, but with much support from his loving and faithful mother, Sam chose to turn from that life and walk a different path. He returned to high school to get his diploma following with a student loan to attend trade college in hopes of becoming an electrician. He graduated in the top of his class and had a very promising future as an electrician, now that is all gone.<br /><br />Sam’s mom has struggled financially since the death of her husband. With no life insurance and two young sons to care for life has not been easy. She works two jobs to make ends meet, put food on the table, a roof over their heads and provide basic needs for her family. She unfortunately has nothing extra for the additional expenses due to this tragedy . So, we are reaching out to the community to anyone that would be able to help out financially as we know that there will be extreme expenses to aid in Samuel's recovery and rehabilitation as a disabled person. Your help would make a world of difference in this young man's life, as he continues to pursue a life of positive choices and changes, overcoming the challenges of this tragedy.<br /><br />As this story is being written, Samuel is still in the ICU of Sunnybrook hospital and based on the doctors diagnosis, his future looks much different as a disabled person, and there are many emotional, physical<br />and financial challenges ahead.<br /><br />NO DONATION IS TOO SMALL!
