Three days after my birthday, on Saturday night, I was in a car accident that completely totaled the new car my dad had just gifted me. It was very scary and has been overwhelming to process. As many friends and family know, my previous car broke down at the beginning of April and had damage severe enough to be considered totaled, which already limited my ability to get to work. I’ve proudly worked at my Club Pilates studio since 2021, and now losing my car for the second time this month has made commuting the required distance even more difficult, putting me in a tough financial position. My dad and I had put everything we could into making sure I had reliable transportation to celebrate my birthday. I used my savings to register the car, and after the accident I had to pay the cost of towing it from the scene. Now I’m facing upcoming bills, including rent, while trying to get back on my feet. I’m hoping to raise funds to help cover immediate expenses and put towards another vehicle. Having reliable transportation is important for my daily life and work, and right now I’m just trying to figure out the best way forward. Any help—whether that’s a donation or sharing this—would mean a lot. Thank you for taking the time to read this and for any support you’re able to give.

Help After My Car Accident

As many other families today, we are devastated to have lost our home and business in the Palisades Fire on January 7th, 2025. We lived in Palisades Village for two and a half years, our daughter Hazel was born here in our home, and we are heartbroken over the loss of our community and village.

We are eternally grateful that we were able to evacuate our family on time and get out of the immediate evacuation area. We know lives matter more than belongings.

Kristina's studio (Aether) burned completely in the fire and with the current evacuation and displacement, she will not be able to continue working until a new home and work space has been found. Additionally, after losing his job in August 2024, Alex currently has no income.

We are grateful for your thoughts and prayers as we navigate this situation. And if you are able to support us financially, any amount helps to support us in getting us back on our feet.

Tomorrow will be 397 days since my big brother became paralyzed and has been in a hospital bed or nursing home. For those of you that don’t know, my older brother Danny was in a near fatal car accident in April 2020 when he swerved off the road to miss a herd of elk and suffered what was thought to be a complete injury to his spinal cord. He spent two months in the hospital and was then transferred to a nursing home.

June 2020 was the last time I publicly shared about his accident, when we assumed he would be discharged to figure out his next steps in life. Since then, he has had Covid, Pneumonia, MRSA, stage 4 bedsores, a bone infection, a major surgery plus a skingraft, and much more that is either too gruesome or too painful to share. Despite all that plagued him this past year, his hope, strength, and resilience remained consistent.

Last September, Danny found a spinal cord rehabilitation facility in Omaha, Nebraska called QLI and our sights have been set on it since. QLI is one of, if not the, best spinal cord rehabilitation facilities in the country, and going there was a long shot goal to say the least. However, with the help of a lot of incredibly wonderful people along the way, I couldn’t be happier to share that Danny has been accepted into QLI’s program and will spend the next 3 months there starting in a few days!

I just flew into Montana and I will check Danny out of his nursing home tomorrow (Monday, May 19th) to spend a couple of days getting him ready for his next adventure and to breathe a bit before the wonderful, but hard work ahead. Danny will need a lot of help and assistance along the way, especially after he gets out of QLI, and I will continue to support him in all the ways I know how.

If you feel called to donate to this journey, thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Danny's life has been far from easy and he has seen a lot of darkness in his time here on earth. At the same time, he has seen so much of the light and he is a fighter. I know with utmost certainty that he is ready to work hard at QLI to become the best version of himself for him and for his daughter, Aurora.

Covid times have been very hard on our small community. Thanks to your help, we managed to keep food on the tables for our staff and their families during the worst of it, but so many others are still in need.

We are also back to purchasing school uniforms for the 2022 season for children whose families cannot afford them. Often, because of pride, the families just won't send the kids to school. We outfit them with uniforms, shoes, socks, backpacks and school supplies.
It costs about $70 per child and we usually serve 15-20 children.

We would be grateful for ANY donation!
Our Foundation has NO overhead costs. Every penny goes to the people who need it.

Please donate what you can. If you would like to donate monthly to "adopt a family" please message us through this web page ( or write to us at [email redacted]) and tell us how much you would like to donate and for how many months. We will send you a reminder once per month and spread out the donations fairly to our staff families.

Much gratitude ... and please stay well and peaceful.
Bob and Jill Ruttenberg, owners of AmaTierra Retreat & Wellness Center, Turrubares, Costa Rica

Second to last update- December 13, 11:41am

Hi all,

Thank you so much for all you've done. This is now closed to donations. Agnes Luansing of the Wildfire Relief Fund has been added as a beneficiary. She will withdraw the funds directly into WRF's account. As soon as that happens, I will update here. Thank you!

EDITED 1:21pm, November 9th-

Nearly 100,000 acres of California have been devastated between the Camp Fire and Woolsey Fire in the Chico and Thousand Oaks areas, respectively. While rural northern CA is my home, I believe it's up to the entire state to come together and support one another in times of tragedy. With combined efforts we can raise more for each community than each community could raise on its own. To cast a wider net, this fund will support the Wildfire Relief Fund to help families who have lost family members, animals, homes, employment, or belongings.

If you're able to take displaced families or animals in (including farm animals and horses), provide supplies, or volunteer time, please reach out at [email redacted].

Thank you.

Original Post- 6:04pm, November 8th-

The Camp Fire began late last night and has already spread to approximately 20,000 acres with 0% containment. All fire fighting and emergency services are being dedicated to life preservation, with none available to put out the fires.

Paradise, Magalia, Concow are reportedly devastated and fully evacuated, with the fire heading down the Skyway to Chico.

More will be evacuated and more will need a helping hand. Likely more than anyone can predict right now.

Please donate. The funds will go toward providing resources to Cal Fire, and resources to those who have been misplaced or who's homes and livelihood have been completely destroyed via the Wildfire Relief Fund, and local organizations taking in refugees including The Jesus Center and others. In addition to donating, please contribute by sharing information on who is taking in the most refugees and needs resources most promptly.

EDITED (again) 2:21pm, November 9th (at bottom as this is least important)

Go Fund Me has requested I fill out the following before I can withdraw these funds and direct them where they're needed.

1. Who you are
2. Where you're from
3. Your relationship to the parties you're raising funds for
4. How the funds will be used (be specific as possible)
5. If you intend to withdraw the money, how you plan to send the funds to the parties you're raising money for or use the money on their behalf

In order-

1. My name is Cooper Teboe
2. Chico, CA. Hence my connection to the fires. The town above mine has been burned to the ground and my parents shortly to be evacced
3. No relation. Just a very concerned Californian who works in politics so I have connections to the donor base out here. They, Congressman Ro Khanna, and Jon Favreau have been huge in helping.
4. Funds will be given to the Wildfire Relief Fund to help displaced families who have lost everything
5. I'll deliver a check on film to ensure no funny business.

Camp Fire/ Woolsey Fire Relief

My name is Mary Bailey, and my daughter, (Miss) Melissa Bailey, was a 2nd grade teacher of the “Bailey Beehive” at Paradise Elementary School. On Thursday, November 8th, they were all evacuated from their school due to the Camp Fire burning in Paradise. This photo is of their once beloved, happy and cohesive school, which has now burned to the ground. Many teachers and families have lost not only their school but their own homes. I don’t know where they are going to put these children for schooling because the fire has burned through their town, but when they do find a place I would love for these teachers and children to have some money for supplies and books as they now have absolutely nothing. Please help if you can. These children are our future and these underpaid and overworked teachers can not make this happen on their own, especially with their own personal losses. I send my love and blessing to all staff, students, and families at Paradise Elementary School.

For over 5 years, Be the Change's donation-based yoga studio has served as a space for self-discovery, sanctuary, self-care, healing, health, creativity, connection, and community.

Our donation-based model has meant we never turn anyone away due to lack of funds. We want all people to have access to the transformative practice of yoga and our impact in the community reflects that intention. What we've given to our community has been based on a system of trust and mutuality, trusting that folks will give what they can. We are there for people in their greatest time of need to offer health & healing, and we hope our community can support us now that we ourselves are in a place where we need help.

We've been grateful for our space in the heart of downtown San Jose, however now are rent has doubled and we have been pushed to find a new location. Thankfully we've found a wonderful new space only 1.5 miles away from our current location, at 947 Park ave. We are raising funds to make this transition possible...so that we can continue to serve San Jose in a new home.

There is a lot of work to be done to make the new space fit to be a yoga studio:
- painting
- new ceiling
- electrical/light fixtures
- building a front desk
- building shelving for props and benches
- deep cleaning
- seating/landscaping of front patio
- new signage
- building deposit

We are asking our community to support us, so we can continue to be a place shining compassion, healing, wellness and sanctuary in San Jose.

All contributions from $10-$10,000 are valued. If BTC has meant something to you or served you in some way, we ask you contribute if you can, or spread the word if you are unable to donate! $10 is small in the grand scheme, but will go a long way with the power of the people, which is what we are built on!

We are deeply grateful for your support, and know that your contribution will continue to serve many others who will benefit from the power of yoga and healing in community!

CommUnity Happens Here <3 Checkout our pictures at the end of this story!

Over the last 5 years we've:
(this is in the studio itself, not including our community outreach programs)

- held weekly donation-based yoga classes (25+ per week), offering our community a diverse array of quality classes to practice consistently

- welcomed over 120 different yoga & wellness teachers through our doors to teach classes and workshops, supported a regular core of 20+ different yoga teachers who teach/taught with us 1-4+ years

- offered diverse classes such as Kundalini, Kundalini Yoga en Español, Body Positive Yoga, Prenatal yoga, Trauma Informed Yoga, Yoga for Trauma Release, Sound Healings, and more to make yoga not only accessible financially, but also inviting for a wide range of backgrounds

- hosted over 20 fundraiser classes for a variety of causes such as Standing Rock, SJ Flood Relief, Planned Parenthood, Hip Hop 4 Change, JW House, Africa Yoga Project, The Dancing Cat, Friends of Roots, Cancer Carepoint, Black Mama's Bail Out, and much more, in addition to joint donation-based classes with Veggielution, Our City Forest, and Local Color

- hosted teacher trainings, including an affordable/sliding scale teacher training, trauma-informed yoga trainings, Yoga for 12 Step Recovery, Yoga in Action, and trauma informed yoga for youth trainings

- served as space for community gathering from monthly women's circles, men's circles, healing space, reiki shares, changemaker nights, nonviolent communication, radical self-care, and many more community building workshops

- mentored 12 different interns offering stipended internships in marketing, community outreach, social media, facilitating, and story telling, including all-access to yoga classes and resources for 4 different youth interns from underrepresented backgrounds

- offered regular part-time work to 2 people experiencing homelessness for 1-2+ years ea, and hosted annual drives for clothing/supplies for people on the streets for the last 4 years

- offered free unlimited yoga memberships and wellness support to 6 different youth experiencing homelessness through partnership with Bill Wilson Center

-served as the hub and foundation of our community outreach programs: Conscious San Jose, Free Yoga in the Park, Woke Teens yoga and mindfulness camp for at-risk teens, Yoga on the Farm, and off-site yoga programs for at-risk youth

- engaged 7 different artist partnerships to showcase local art, 10+ different musician partnerships, and 15+ different local health/wellness business showcases

In the months since sharing Tarec's story, the response has been inspiring. Over a million people have read the story on Quora. Hundreds of thousands of people have liked, shared, and commented on Facebook, Instagram, and Reddit. I owe a special shout out to Grace Keh for sharing the story with Frank Summerville from KTVU Fox. Once Frank posted it on his Facebook, I saw firsthand what "going viral" looks like.

People from all over the world now know Tarec's story because of social media and the power of love. This story has found its way into the hearts of so many regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, religion, nationality, political views, or class. By caring about Tarec's story, YOU proved love transcends all.

Let that sink in for a minute.

The love and concern that strangers have shown a man they'll probably never meet is beyond words. I recently spent an evening with Tarec reading your comments to him. I wish you could've seen his face light up. To say your words mean the world to him would be a vast understatement. For a man that has practically nothing the sense of pride and importance that YOU have given him can't ever be taken away.

So now the tough part. How is Tarec doing?

Well.

He still lives in a tent next to highway 101 in Marin City. The rain has made life even tougher for Tarec. He still spends most of his days alone or hanging out at Starbucks. The employees and customers treat him well. It's hard not to. The warmth in this guy's heart is palpable.

As for the job. Safeway did indeed offer Tarec a job and we celebrated that news with ice cream. I thought we had a happy ending and a new beginning for Tarec. I was wrong. I failed and I truly apologize if anyone feels misled. With that said, TOGETHER we have an opportunity to write a happy ending and give Tarec a new shot at life.

In retrospect, I didn't fully understand the impossible nature of having and keeping a job with no place to call home. In an effort to find Tarec a home, I visited Homeward Bound and met with their executive director, Mary Kay Sweeney, a real life angel. She taught me "a healthy home is the foundation for a prosperous life".

We've come full circle.

Tarec is still homeless and jobless, but not hopeless. And because of YOU neither am I. I can't emphasize this enough. The thousands of comments and messages I have received over the past few months has inspired me to finish what I started. Change a man's life. Now with thousands of my closest friends, we can accomplish that together.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you for your kindness and support.

"Life is hard. Be nice to people." - Alex Rayburn
"Be the change you wish to see." - Mahatma Gandhi

Here is how the $25,000 will be used:
$10,000 - $12,000: 12 months of rent pre-paid
$1,000 - $2,000: turns a house/appt. into a home
$1,500 - $2,000: 12 months of utility bills
$1,000 - $1,500: groceries, clothes, and spending money

The additional $8,000+ will be placed into a checking/savings account under Tarec's name.

I'll be creating a facebook page for Tarec where we will provide bi-weekly updates. Everything will be documented and shared through facebook. Transparency and authenticity are two words that I live by.

If you are a Real Estate Broker or Agent in Marin County and would like to help Tarec find his new home, please email me at [email redacted] with the subject line Housing for Tarec.

If you would like to donate, clothes, kitchen or bath items, gift cards, etc. please email me at [email redacted] with the subject line Donations for Tarec.
