Jeff Buchbaum was a selfless man who touched the lives of everyone around him. He was always the first to volunteer when someone needed help, and his dedication to his family, friends, and community was unwavering. Jeff worked tirelessly in special education, making a lasting impact on every student he met. His kindness and generosity were felt by all who knew him.

 Jeff was also deeply dedicated to religious studies and worked to build a strong community at Temple Sinai. His commitment to faith and community brought people together and strengthened bonds among those he served.

 Tragically, Jeff died in a car accident, leaving behind his wife and three children. The loss has been devastating for his family and everyone who cared about him. In response to this tragedy, this GoFundMe is being organized independently of the family by Craig Barishman and Ron Hoffman in honor of Jeff. Once the fundraiser reaches its goal, the organizers will contact Jeff's family to transfer the funds. The funds raised will go directly to his wife and children, who will decide how best to use them—whether for funeral expenses, hospital bills, or other needs that arise.

<div>With tremendous sadness, we share the news that Shlomi and Shahar (Deborah) Mathias were brutally murdered by Hamas terrorists in their home on Kibbutz Holit on October 7. They died protecting their 16-year-old son Rotem, who was seriously wounded during the attack. Rotem miraculously survived by hiding for more than 12 hours, through repeated attempts by the terrorists to ensure there were no survivors in the house. Rotem’s sisters, Shir and Shaked, witnessed their parents’ deaths in real time through texts from Rotem. They only learned he had survived when they were rescued 14 hours later from their own hiding places.

<div>Shlomi and Shahar were devoted parents, wonderful musicians, and passionate educators who believed in and advocated for coexistence between Israelis and Palestinians. They were founders of the Hagar school in Beer Sheva, a joint Jewish-Muslim school, and leaders of the pro-democracy protests.  We hope you will help us directly support Rotem, Shir, and Shaked as they move forward to live the lives their parents died to protect.

Help for the Troen - Mathias Children

<div>Jerry Kaplan is a high school junior who was recently diagnosed with leukemia.  
</div>
<div>As an eight year old, he battled leukemia and won, but it’s a long and difficult process. He needs our help as he fights this battle for a second time. Jerry is currently in the hospital receiving treatment, which puts an added stress on his family as they want to spend as much time with him as possible. His mother works full time to support Jerry and his siblings, but she will have to miss an extensive amount of time traveling back and forth to the hospital.  Jerry is the manager of the Baldwin High School soccer team, an honors student,

<div>and the type of person who makes everyone feel comfortable. He balances his school work, his job and his extra curriculars without ever complaining about how much he has on his plate. In sports, we always preach to the team about the importance of becoming a family. At this time, Jerry needs all of us to unite as his extended family: the Baldwin Soccer team, the Baldwin community, and everyone who understands the tremendous challenge he faces.

<p>During the pandemic, thousands of businesses have closed or struggled to stay in business. With the support of the community, some DC grants &amp; SBA loans, Blue 44 and some other neighborhood businesses have been able to survive up to this point. However, with the soaring cost of food, labor and rent the challenge to stay open remains a major concern for many of these businesses.<br /><br />After a recent conversation with owner/operator, Chris Nardelli, we learned the restaurant was banking on receiving a Restaurant Revitalization Fund grant from the SBA back in June of this year. The first thing Blue 44 had planned on doing with these funds was to build a covered patio structure to allow for a more comfortable dining experience for customers, especially during the pandemic. However, Chris, along with thousands of other small business owners received an email stating the grant funds had been exhausted. Blue 44 still has plans to move forward with the project, however, the cost now presents a much bigger hurdle than originally anticipated.<br /><br />As long-time supporters and parents of former Blue 44 employees, we thought what better way to show our appreciation for the Blue 44 family by setting up this GoFundMe to give our community a chance to help raise funds for this project. From speaking more with Chris, the estimated cost of the project is north of $24,000 (including material, labor, permits, drawings, etc). No donation is too small and all donations are greatly appreciated. Chris &amp; his partners have asked not to share this fundraiser on any social media platforms as they prefer any support to come directly from the community in which Blue 44 serves.
