My name is Dave, and I’m reaching out for help for myself and my father. Ten years ago, my dad suffered a stroke that left him unable to care for himself, so I became his full-time caregiver. Last year, my world was shattered when my daughter was murdered by an ex-boyfriend. At the same time, I was diagnosed with cancer and had to undergo surgery. The grief and health challenges forced me to close my business, and since then, I’ve also become diabetic and suffered two slipped discs in my back. To make things even harder, my only car broke down, leaving us stranded and unable to get to the store or doctor’s appointments. My dad’s medication costs over $400 a month, and I haven’t been able to afford my own medicine. I’m struggling to keep up with bills, and I desperately want to talk to a professional about the loss of my daughter, but I can’t afford counseling. The most urgent needs right now are medication for my dad and myself, and a reliable car so I can take care of both of us. I’ve always been the one to help others, but now I find myself in a position where I need to ask for help. I know there are good people out there, and I’m hoping for just one break—just one chance to get back on my feet. If I can’t get this help, I honestly don’t know where we’ll end up.
