Help Shannon Keep Her Home After Caring for Mom

Hello, my name is Gerald Nicholson, Sr., and I truly appreciate you taking a moment to read my story. 
A little about me - I have an amazing wife, three wonderful kids and a beautiful granddaughter. I am an alumnus of Fort Valley State University, where I pledged Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternities, and was an exceptional musician and artist. I’ve played piano for over 35 years for many churches and organizations. My favorite pastimes include cooking and grilling, fishing, and Falcons Football on Sundays. In March of 2023, my family and I have been blindsided by a fatal neurological disease, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, generally known as ALS(Lou Gehrig’s Disease). It has aggressively attacked my body and is rapidly affecting and diminishing my ability to function independently. This has resulted in myself and my spouse losing our jobs. My wife is my primary caregiver and we are struggling to meet every need. At this juncture, we have lost insurance. Any funds donated will be used to aid in securing caregiving services, ongoing medical equipment needs, alleviation of medical bills, and other household expenses as needed. <div>Rodney Stroud suffered his first heart attack in his early 40s. This life threatening experience landed him in ICU fighting for his life at a local hospital in Athens, Ga. He had to end up getting a pace maker/defibrillater put in. From there he had to take numerous meds that would support his heart and his health for the rest of his life.

<div>Rodneys heart was very weak, but years later his heart began to strengthen again, and he was able to decrease some medications. The pacemaker/defibrillates had to remain.

<div>On April 5, 2019, Rodney was admitted to a local hospital after becoming ill at work. He ended up unconscious. His heart failed twice that day; early afternoon and later that night. His chances of surviving looked very grim as he was placed in the Intensive Care Unit.
</div>

<div>The next day he was air lifted to Emory Saint Joseph’s Hospital in Atlanta, Ga where he remained in the cardiology critical care unit. Later, he was removed from critical care. He was released from Emory Saint Joseph’s on his birthday, April 26, 2019. He had to remain on dialysis for a few months. He required Home Health Care.

<div>A few weeks passed by and Rodney became ill again. He was admitted and released from the hospital multiple times. As time went on his condition worsened. He was taken back to Emory Saint Joseph’s where he was had to undergo more tests. He was moved to Emory Saint Joseph’s Critical Care Unit. His heart was not strong enough.

<div>Rodney received news that he would need a Heart Transplant. He now required medicine administered directly to his heart via an IV pump. This could only be for a limited period of time.

<div>The next life saving step was to plan surgery for Rodney to have a Left Ventricle Assisted Device (LVAD) put in as a bridge to the next step of a Heart Transplant. This device assisted Rodney’s weak heart with pushing blood from his left ventricle to his right ventricle, thus supplying blood flow throughout his body.  Rodney received the LVAD surgery and remained in critical care for quite some time until released for home.

<div>After the LVAD there were good days and bad days along with hospitalizations, and numerous doctor appointments in Athens, Ga and in Atlanta, Ga.

<div>With patience and prayers, Rodney completed numerous preliminary requirements for a heart transplant. Rodney, family, friends &amp; loved ones prayed that he would be blessed with a heart donor, as he waited on the Heart Transplant List.

<div>Rodney was blessed with a successful Heart Transplant surgery on October 20, 2025. Our prayers were answered. Rodney is currently recovering at Emory Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia.

<div>We are so thankful and grateful to the donor who donated their heart to save the life of another human being.  We. pray for the donors family &amp; loved ones during their time of grief &amp; loss. May they find comfort in God’s embrace.

My name is Faith and I a single mom to a wonderful two-year old boy named Troy. We are both living with a heart condition known as <a href="http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/hypertrophic-cardiomyopathy/home/ovc-20122102" target="_blank">Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy</a> <br />, which simply means our hearts have a hard time pumping the blood through our bodies due to our heart muscles being abnormally thick. This a condition that runs in our family. My mother, Helen, also had this condition and passed away when I was very young. Troy was diagnosed with this condition when he was six-months old and has been my brave little soldier throughout all of his hospital stays, doctor's appointments, and medication changes. As of now he is doing okay and with continuous monitoring we will be able to stay ahead of any future problems in relation to his condition. I was diagnosed at the age of fifteen and had to be implanted with a pacemaker due to my abnormal heart rhythm. Through the years there have been some ups and downs due to my condition, but I was still able to live a normal fulfilling life as a teenage and young adult. Shortly after having my son in 2014 I began to notice a rapid decline in my energy levels and overall health. In July 2015 I was hospitalized and discovered I was in the early stages of heart failure. As a result, I was soon unable to do simple task such as walk up the stairs or through the parking lot without feeling as if I ran a marathon and was placed on the heart transplant list. Shortly after I had to stop working due to the sheer exhaustion I experienced doing simple day to day activities. Since that time, I have had my good days and more than my share of bad ones but my son has and will continue to be the motivating force that gets me through every single day. In August 2016 my health continued to deteriorate despite all efforts that were being made in way of medication as I wait for my new heart, it was decided by my medical team that I have a <a href="http://www.mayoclinic.org/tests-procedures/ventricular-assist-device/home/ovc-20167061" target="_blank">Ventricular Assistive Device</a> (VAD) implanted, so that my health would not continue to get worse which could keep me from getting my new heart. On 09/09/2016 I "I Got the CALL" I had to take a few blood tests to make sure the donor was a match. So on 09/10/2016 at 12am I was out on the surgery table to get my NEW HEART!! But first they had to double check to make sure everything was good before they opened me yup! I didn't get my hopes up until I woke up and sure enough I woke up with a NEW. HEART!!! <br />Through all of these obstacles I have continued to care for my son and try to keep things as normal as possible for him. Im in transition to moving to be closer to Mayo Clinic where my doctor’s appointments and future transplant will take place. I have started this page to help me raise money in order to obtain reliable transportation for my son and I and to help cover expenses we will incur during my heart transplant surgeries.
