<div>Hace más de 20 años,<strong> solo 8 Guacamayas Verdes (Ara militaris) vivían en libertad</strong> en Cabo Corrientes, Jalisco. Hoy, gracias a la dedicación de mi familia y al apoyo de diversas instituciones y personas a lo largo del proyecto,<strong> más de 110 guacamayas vuelan libres, muchas de ellas nacidas en nuestro Santuario de 70 hectáreas.</strong>

<div>Mi nombre es Francisco Espino. En 1999, con 19 años, fundé El Santuario de las Guacamayas, un refugio para reconstruir la población de guacamayas militares en la península silvestre de Cabo Corrientes. Desde entonces, he dedicado mi vida al voluntariado para proteger estas aves y ahora mis hijos también se han unido a esta labor familiar.

<div>Gracias a nuestro esfuerzo, en los últimos ocho años, 112 polluelos han sobrevivido hasta la edad adulta y regresan cada temporada al Santuario. Esta temporada alcanzamos una de nuestras mejores temporadas de reproducción: 26 polluelos en 18 nidos activos, casi el doble del año anterior.

<div><strong>CÓMO TRABAJAMOS Y CON QUIÉN COLABORAMOS</strong>

<div>Over 20 years ago, <strong>only 8 Military Macaws (Ara militaris) lived in the wild</strong> in Cabo Corrientes, Jalisco. Today, thanks to the dedication of my family and the support of various institutions and individuals throughout the project, <strong>more than 110 macaws fly free, many of them born in our 70-hectare Sanctuary.</strong>

In 1999, at 19 years old, I founded the Santuario de las Guacamayas, a refuge dedicated to rebuilding the population of military macaws in the wild peninsula of Cabo Corrientes. Since then, I have devoted my life as a volunteer to protecting these birds, and now my children have joined this family mission.

<div>Thanks to our efforts, over the last eight years, 112 chicks have survived to adulthood and return to the Sanctuary each season. This season, we achieved one of our best breeding seasons yet: 26 chicks in 18 active nests, almost double last year’s numbers.

<div>The Sanctuary is officially registered with Mexican environmental authorities as a Wildlife Conservation Management Unit (UMA) called “Santuario de las Guacamayas,” complying with all legal requirements for the protection and management of the species.

<div>I was shocked and incredibly saddened two months ago when one of my best friends, Ariane Cox, let me know she was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer. Because of her young age, her doctors thought her stomach issues were from an infection. After a colonoscopy, it was confirmed that it was not an infection, but colon cancer and after a PET scan, it was confirmed that it has spread to lymph nodes all over her body. Her and her husband had to quickly uproot their lives in Midland and move to Fort Worth to begin chemotherapy. Medical bills have been outrageous, as were moving costs. Because most of Ariane and her husband's time is spent going to doctor and chemotherapy visits, they can no longer work full time, which means half the income. I'd love to show them some love and support while easing the financial burden of a very awful illness!

Despite facing delays and barriers, we've finally arranged her chemo sessions starting on August 10th in Victoria, BC. While we remain hopeful for a brighter future together, we know the road ahead will be challenging.
