<div>Mi nombre es Francisco Espino, fundador del proyecto de conservación conocido como <strong>el Santuario de Guacamayas</strong>, un lugar destinado voluntariamente a la conservación de la naturaleza especialmente al cuidado de la especie guacamaya verde militar (<em>Ara militaris</em>), aunque el objetivo es el cuidado de todas las especies tanto flora como Fauna. En el oeste de México se encuentra este bello lugar donde la guacamaya verde es residente todo el año, sin embargo esta especie se encuentra en peligro de extinción, por el alto índice de tráfico, principalmente la captura de polluelos en el bosque. He pasado mi vida trabajando como voluntario para proteger a las guacamayas en las tierras con bosque de mi familia al sur de Puerto Vallarta, en la península silvestre de Cabo Corrientes.

<div><strong>Me he enfocado en tiempo completo a la conservación, sin embargo, ahora me veo obligado a parar un momento por cuestiones de salud, </strong> necesito una cirugía para reconstruir mi pie de una antigua lesión y estoy solicitando apoyo financiero para mantener el Santuario en funcionamiento mientras me recupero. Cuando tenía 26 años me lastimé el pie y desde entonces no he podido caminar normalmente y a medida que envejezco el problema está empeorando mucho. Los cirujanos especialistas en Guadalajara van a realizar la cirugía correctiva totalmente gratis para mi, pero debo recuperarme de seis meses a un año para sanar mi pie y poder caminar normalmente de nuevo. Necesito fondos para pagar a las personas que harán el trabajo en el santuario mientras me recupero y para que nuestro trabajo siga avanzando.

<div><strong>La historia del Santuario inicia en 1999 </strong>cuando tenía 19 años, unas personas me invitaron a un lugar conocido como La Nancita que forma parte del ejido Las Juntas y Los Veranos. Me di cuenta de que se estaban talando indiscriminadamente todas las especies de árboles. Las personas que talaban el bosque eran personas ajenas a este ejido, así que no me gustaba lo que estaba pasando con el bosque, motivo por el cual decidí que dedicaría mi tierra familiar para salvar a las guacamayas. Inicie la búsqueda de tierras para expandir y complementar las tierras que ya pertenecían a mi abuelo, quien fue uno de los principales fundadores del ejido Las Juntas y Los Veranos, esto con el fin de enfocar mi vida a la conservación . Hoy en día, estas 70 hectáreas son el Santuario de Guacamayas.

<div><strong>Las guacamayas verdes militares siempre han vivido aquí en Cabo Corrientes </strong>en Jalisco México, aunque su número ha disminuido considerablemente en las últimas décadas; en otros lugares en el Santuario nos hemos dado a la tarea de qué esos números en lugar de bajar aumenten con los cuidados y la dedicación de la familia responsable del sitio, tanto las guacamayas como distintas especies tienen refugio en las 70 hectáreas, nuestro trabajo es vigilar qué la gente que se dedica a saqueo de distintas especies, tanto aves, guacamayas, loros, cómo caza de mamíferos: venado, tejón, pecari, no puedan hacerlo por la protección qué se le da al Santuario con recorridos de vigilancia y monitoreo en las zonas de anidación. Los cazadores furtivos son una de las principales causas de la disminución de las guacamayas. Nuestro objetivo en el Santuario de Guacamayas es proporcionar un bosque saludable para que las guacamayas aniden y críen a sus crías. Mi familia y yo hemos estado haciendo esto durante más de 20 años de manera voluntaria.

<div><strong>Actualmente hay más de 30 parejas de guacamayas anidando en estado salvaje</strong> que regresan cada año para anidar y criar a sus polluelos en el santuario. Nosotros proporcionamos los nidos artificiales, que son necesarios porque no hay suficientes árboles grandes para sus nidos. Trabajamos en estrecha colaboración con biólogos para identificar a las guacamayas y rastrear su actividad, limpiar a los polluelos de parásitos y proporcionar una presencia para evitar que los cazadores furtivos ingresen al Santuario.

<div>My name is Francisco Espino, founder of the conservation project known as the <strong>Macaw Sanctuary</strong>, a 70 hectare refuge dedicated to the conservation of nature, especially the care of the wild military green macaw species <em>(Ara militaris)</em>, and the objective is the care of both flora and fauna species. In western Mexico this is the beautiful place where the green macaw is a resident all year round, however this species is in danger of extinction due to the high rate of illegal pet trade, mainly the capture of macaw chicks in the forest. I have spent my life volunteering to protect macaws on my family's forested land south of Puerto Vallarta, on the wild Cabo Corrientes peninsula.

<div><strong>I have focused full time on conservation, however, I am now forced to stop for a moment due to health reasons.</strong> I need surgery to reconstruct my foot from an old injury and I am requesting financial support to keep the Sanctuary in operation while I I recover. When I was 26 I injured my foot and since then I haven't been able to walk normally and as I get older the problem is getting much worse. The specialist surgeons in Guadalajara will perform the corrective surgery completely free of charge for me, but I must recover from six months to a year to heal my foot and be able to walk normally again. I need funds to pay the people who will do the work at the sanctuary while I recover and to keep our work moving forward.

<div><strong>The history of the Sanctuary begins in 1999 when I was 19 years old, </strong>some people invited me to a place known as La Nancita, which is part of the Las Juntas and Los Veranos ejido community. I realized that all species of trees were being cut down indiscriminately. The people who were cutting down the forest were people outside of this ejido, so I didn't like what was happening to the forest, which is why I decided that I would dedicate my family land to save the macaws. I began the search for land to expand and complement the lands that already belonged to my grandfather, who was one of the main founders of the Las Juntas and Los Veranos ejido, in order to focus my life on conservation. Today, these 70 hectares are the Macaw Sanctuary.

<div><strong>Macaws have always lived here in the unspoiled Cabo Corrientes </strong>in Jalisco, Mexico, although their numbers have decreased significantly in recent decades. Poachers are one of the main causes of the decline of macaws. We are working in the Sanctuary to ensure these numbers, instead of decreasing, increase with my family’s care and dedication for the Sanctuary. Our job is to ensure that there is no more poaching of all species - both birds like macaws and parrots - and no hunting of mammals like deer, badgers, peccaries. With our surveillance and monitoring tours in the Sanctuary we are able to provide protection to the wildlife. Our goal at the Macaw Sanctuary is to provide a healthy forest for wild macaws to nest and raise their young. My family and I have been doing this for over 20 years on a voluntary basis.

<div><strong>There are currently more than 30 pairs of macaws nesting in the wild that return each year to nest and raise their chicks in the Sanctuary.</strong> We provide the artificial nests, which are necessary because there are not enough large trees for their nests. We work closely with biologists to identify macaws and track their activity, clean chicks of parasites, and provide a presence to prevent poachers from entering the Sanctuary.

<div><strong>This is my passion in life, to recover and conserve the forest ecosystem </strong>and provide a healthy and safe forest for the macaws, as well as for all the species present in this mountain range such as the Jaguar (Panthera onca), an endangered species or the Jalisco White Pine (Pinus jaliscana), an endemic and threatened species among many other native and endemic species. This area is considered a priority in terms of conservation due to its high biodiversity index (CONABIO). Ayuda a Francisco y Las Guacamayas - Help Francisco & Macaws

<div>I was shocked and incredibly saddened two months ago when one of my best friends, Ariane Cox, let me know she was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer. Because of her young age, her doctors thought her stomach issues were from an infection. After a colonoscopy, it was confirmed that it was not an infection, but colon cancer and after a PET scan, it was confirmed that it has spread to lymph nodes all over her body. Her and her husband had to quickly uproot their lives in Midland and move to Fort Worth to begin chemotherapy. Medical bills have been outrageous, as were moving costs. Because most of Ariane and her husband's time is spent going to doctor and chemotherapy visits, they can no longer work full time, which means half the income. I'd love to show them some love and support while easing the financial burden of a very awful illness!
