On Monday, April 7, her husband of eleven years, Michael, passed away from complete respiratory failure due to complications from cystic fibrosis, needing a second transplant, and COVID-19. His was a battle both long and courageous, fought with dignity and grace, much of it within the sterile walls of a hospital. In recent weeks, the illness demanded everything, and Chelsea gave it: her time, her care, her career, and ultimately, her partner.

He leaves behind his 33 week pregnant wife and unborn daughter. There are no words to describe the depth of loss and pain we all feel, but all our thoughts and focus are shifted to lindi and this beautiful baby at this time. On Wednesday, January 25th my husband was out walking our dog in the evening. They were walking through the crosswalk of a well lit intersection when a car turned the corner and hit them. My husband took the brunt of the hit and now has pretty bad whiplash, bruised ribs, and a sprained hand. Our dog was pulled under the tire of the car and her back feet were pinned under the tire until the driver moved. She is suffering from severe road rash and multiple cuts and gashes on both her hind legs and feet. One of the cuts is so bad that it went down to the bone and possibly cut the joint capsule of one of her toes. She had to receive emergency care where they gave her 26 stitches, splints on both legs, and she had to wear bandages that have required daily changes for the past week. She’s also been on a regimen of medications because she’s been in a lot of pain and we’ve been needing to keep her calm and sedated so she can heal. It’s been a lot.  Unfortunately, the accident was a hit and run. The driver pulled over and sat in his car for about a minute before driving off. He never got out to see if my husband and dog were ok. We filed a police report, filed a claim with our car insurance, and hired a personal injury lawyer. Our lawyer was able to get video footage of the accident, but we are unable to read the plate number. So, there’s nothing more we can do. We’re now stuck with nearly $4000 in vet bills and our dog still has care she will need in the coming weeks.  We are also in the midst of moving across the state and my husband is unable to lift heavy things with his injuries. So, we are also looking at an additional $3000 in moving costs because we now have to hire movers to help with our long distance move. We’re only asking for help with our vet bills at this time, but if this gets enough attention we’d greatly appreciate help with these additional expenses as well.  I thank you for considering our family during this time and we truly appreciate any help you can give.

 With the state of the world as it currently is, it feels weird to ask for help. There are first responders, healthcare workers, volunteers and small businesses that need our support and our donations now more than ever. We’re in the greatest economic and public health crisis in modern history. Our pets don’t know that, though - they can, and will, still get sick and require our help. For anyone who knows Bug, you know she is a sweet, affectionate mush angel. I call her my trash angel since she was rescued off a sidewalk in Flatbush (forever thanks to <a href="https://www.flatbushcats.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Flatbush Cats</a> for all the rescue, foster &amp; TNR work you do!) eating out of a garbage can with her mom. A girl after my own heart. As it turns out, her life as a young feral cat most likely played a role in the condition of her mouth. My vet said it is '<a href="https://www.manhattancats.com/blog/2019/october/severe-gingivitis-stomatitis/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Lymphacytic Stomatitis</a>' and I said “what the hell is that wait ok please slow down I need to write this down and spell it so I can google it  in two minutes." Some cats have a rare, debilitating and chronic autoimmune disease called stomatitis,  which essentially means it causes their body to “attack” <a href="https://www.vet.cornell.edu/departments-centers-and-institutes/cornell-feline-health-center/health-information/feline-health-topics/gingivostomatitis" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">its own teeth</a> . It hasn’t progressed too far yet, thankfully, since she is still young and her symptoms have been mostly inflamed/bloody gums and trashcan breath. It is <a href="https://www.veterinarypracticenews.com/why-teeth-removal-is-best-when-your-patient-has-feline-stomatitis/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">the opinion of many dentists</a>  that medical management of this condition is rarely effective and that full mouth extractions are the <a href="https://www.uniquelycats.com/cat-dental-cost/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">treatment of choice.</a> Failure to address head on could lead to inability to eat altogether and cause death in some cases. It will be expensive, but it’s not the end of the world, and her recovery will not be awful (hopefully!)  Almost all cats adjust well to having no teeth and in the long run this will give her the ability to live a long life without pain and be a happy, healthy, toothless princess.  I'll do anything for my Bug, I love her desperately and want to make her comfortable no matter what the cost. That being said…..I need a little help. Full mouth extractions are an extensive oral surgery that requires significant surgical skills and therefore should be expected to be costly, particularly in NYC.  If I could ask anyone who is able to assist me in reaching the estimated cost of the procedure, it would genuinely help SO much and go really far in helping me stay on my feet with my bills. Her surgery  is scheduled for May 22nd. Those of you who know me also know this month last year I was in an accident and needed a major surgery that I’m still paying off (May is really a great month for us, huh?) so anything helps. Help a little Bug with a big surgery

My name is Chelsea Fernandez, and I've started this page to supplement medical bills and treatments for my husband, Michael Fernandez who just received a bi-lateral (double) Lung Transplant and who will be undergoing bi-lateral Cochlear Implants. <img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/33879428_1540012199491623_r.jpeg" alt="33879428_1540012199491623_r.jpeg" width="100%" media_type="3" /> My husband (we just got married in February of this year!) Michael was born with Cystic Fibrosis. His outlook as a child was so severe that he was actually a MAKE-A-WISH kid.  He has a lifelong history of medical issues, complications, and exacerbation's all related to his CF and CF-related diabetes.   <img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/33879428_1540097172175773_r.jpeg" width="100%" media_type="3" alt="33879428_1540097172175773_r.jpeg" /> Most people don't realize that Cystic Fibrosis is a progressive disease, in that it gets worse with time.  A year ago, Michael's doctors and specialists recommended that he go through a lung transplant evaluation. He could no longer walk around the house without a nasal cannula for oxygen. He brought tanks to work.  His lung function was down to 24%.  A few weeks after transplant evaluation, he was officially listed by UNOS.  We had 4 "false" calls, and let me tell you: driving 5 hours from Miami to Tampa on little or no sleep (almost every time, as our coordinators would call us late) is no walk in the park. Some days we would make the two trips on the same day, as we had work the next day.  It was grueling and anxiety-ridden every single time. We would get there and have to wait, and then get the bad news: the lungs weren't viable.  Lungs are notoriously hard to keep in viable transplant condition. This happened four different times.  To anyone who has heard me talk about it, I usually describe it as an emotional roller coaster. But on August 25th, around 10:30 PM, his phone rang.  And it was a Tampa number.  This would turn out to be our fifth and final call.  We had to be at the hospital by 3 AM, and we both almost fell asleep driving...but we got there. That night neither of us got much sleep.  Around 2:15 PM, we received the news we had been waiting for: The lungs looked great. They were from a young donor. SURGERY WAS A GO! He was finally getting new lungs. <img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/33879428_1540008160755873_r.jpeg" alt="33879428_1540008160755873_r.jpeg" width="100%" media_type="3" />(The board at TGH in his room that we received the good news) <img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/33879428_1540010953815930_r.jpeg" alt="33879428_1540010953815930_r.jpeg" width="100%" media_type="3" /> (His surgeon introducing himself and explaining the procedure. A few minutes after this, he was whisked away to the OR.) Michael's surgery lasted 5 hours and 7 minutes.  Lung transplant #579 at TGH. That was a very hard night.  <img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/33879428_1540014859559007_r.jpeg" alt="33879428_1540014859559007_r.jpeg" width="100%" media_type="3" /> He was in ICU for a few (very hard) days...<img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/33879428_1540014903457608_r.jpeg" alt="33879428_1540014903457608_r.jpeg" width="100%" media_type="3" /> ... and was then transferred to the hospital floor. <img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/33879428_1540013107494594_r.jpeg" alt="33879428_1540013107494594_r.jpeg" width="100%" media_type="3" />(Many laps were done on 7F.) <img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/33879428_1540013165774816_r.jpeg" alt="33879428_1540013165774816_r.jpeg" width="100%" media_type="3" /> During this time, he began having some hearing issues, and was also found to have a paralyzed vocal cord from the extubation. Some bedside hearing tests were administered, and it was concluded that he had significant trouble. A few weeks later, this progressed into him having what the doctors considered "profound hearing loss." He tried incredibly painful, high-dose steroid injections directly into his ear drums for 4 consecutive days in a row.  <img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/33879428_1540011224706939_r.jpeg" alt="33879428_1540011224706939_r.jpeg" width="100%" media_type="3" /> Unfortunately, they did not work.  Michael is now completely deaf. He has no measurable hearing in his ears.  It's hard to even type that out, let alone speak it to someone out loud.  Our doctors and specialists are puzzled, and cannot give us a definitive answer as to why this happened, or how it happened. This was never in any pre-transplant literature, never given to us as a warning.  He is in an extremely rare minority that this has ever happened to.  Along with the total hearing loss, he also has almost constant tinnitus and has had severe balance issues. I have typed this out and deleted it a few dozen times, because neither of us are people to ask for help. These circumstances have humbled us however, and a lot of close friends and family have told us that we have their love and support.  So, we are starting this as a way to supplement all of the unseen medical costs and everyday hurdles. I have been working remotely for months (when I can), but his FMLA and disability have not kicked in yet. It's a struggle. We have a mortgage, I have a car payment, insurance, medications (our transplant clinic changes our medications and dosages weekly!) different therapies, infusions, specialists...etc. We don't know what the future holds, but we will be fighting together the entire way. He is my entire heart, and I know no one who deserves a new chance at life more than he does.  If you can give, please do. Even a small contribution makes a difference.
